I agree but there's a reason for it and there's some issues that can happen if people start messing with stuff that it's not intended to be messed with but everybody's vehicle is obviously their own and they can do what they want I'm only here to advise instruct and educate and obviously you see in the comment sections here there's a lot of people with negative things to say but they're not a professional and they don't do this like I do everyday but I do agree it's a stupid idea it's pointless

This is very good information, thank you for the video. The auto start/stop is highly annoying, and unfortunately it is a gimmick to game the bs EPA ratings for lower mpg vehicles. Any increase in fuel economy in real world use is minimal to nonexistant, and this current design trend is a disservice to the actual fuel economy ratings of these vehicles. So who loses? We, the consumers, who are forced to endure the ideology of people who think they know better than us.

Now I have seen people find the one individual wire in that connector which you have to look up a wiring diagram to find that out and snip it and then plug it back in and they've been fine unplugging the whole connector not a good idea
I don't want to be at liberty for somebody doing that or else I would do a video on it but assembly leave that up to people themself

It's very ironic how life works sometimes. I watched this video two days ago. Yesterday one of my friends mentioned that he disabled his start-stop (ironically, a 2016 2wd, 2.7EB model) after ages of trying to figure out how. I asked him if he bought the 7-way tester and left it plugged in and he stated that that method did not work for him. He saw a video online about a tech unplugging a wire. I stopped him, found this video on my phone, and had him watch it. It's plugged in again and he'll not be unplugging it in the future. Thanks, Rich!

  • @hughwynn6193
    @hughwynn6193 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

I totally agreed with the maker of this video and he just got one more thumbs-up from me.
Ford SHOULD provides their customers an option to permanently disable this STUPID function which is automatically re-enabled by the computer on the next engine restart. I own a 2020 Ford Ranger. To permanently disable Auto Start Stop function, I plugged a tiny 0.5 watt LED night light into the 110-volt outlet on the rear of the center console. No more stops and restarts. Note that the Auto Start Stop function is not enabled IF an electrical accessory is turned on or plugged in. This is mentioned on page 145 in 2020 Ford Ranger Owner's Manual. This should work for other Ford SUV and pickup trucks as well.

I have 2018 F150 Lariat. I used FORSCAN to disable the Auto-Stop. I hated that feature. The sales guy forgot to tell me about it. When I left the dealership, it auto-stopped on me at the traffic light in front of the dealership. I thought the truck died, so I pushed the start button and got really confused. Anyways, somehow I figured out what was happening and went on my way. First thing I did, was to figure out how to disable that feature (other than to remember to pressing the button every time I start the truck). Anyways, I found FORSCAN and also enabled my mirrors to fold when I park and arm the truck, and did some customs to the navi screen. I tried to disable the passenger seat belt minder (because I place my EDC backpack in the passenger seat and it thinks there's a passenger there). I did the FORSCAN, but it would eventually start chiming again. I just finally kept that belt locked.

This is a nightmare on many brands. Never heard of this way, always heard of people using the button module that when powered up it would act to click the button to turn it off after so many seconds. They need to allow this to be disabled until turned back on in settings. It won't effect EPA numbers because they can disclaimer that it gets that while using the system and turning it off can change performance.

If car manufacturers don’t come up with these stupid functions to appease the EPA then customers don’t need to go crazy trying to disable auto start stop. I don’t think you understand how annoying it is to drive a car with the engine constantly cutting out. And the rough restarts that jolts the car. The delay on restarts. Shut off engine for less than a second at a stop sign. Me constantly thinking about if the engine is gonna shut off this time I come to a stop. It is very tiring to think about all that. You spend all this money to buy a car that you can’t enjoy because auto start stop keeps intruding on the driving experience. The only time it is acceptable for an engine to cut out is in a hybrid drivetrain. I always have power to instantly take off from a stop on a hybrid but not with auto start stop. Auto start stop is a transitional technology that was never designed with the customer in mind. I think car manufacturers are getting very arrogant with pushing stupid shit on people and assuming people won’t complain or retaliate. I know Toyota don’t do these auto start stop nonsense on their cars because they know it’s useless. And guess what the Camry still gets very good mpg without it.

I got sick of the ford dealer telling me there was nothing wrong with my truck because the engine would die every time i stopped the truck. It spent it's first three weeks at the dealership because the engine kept shutting down. Sad when you spend all of that money for a truck and have to spend another 100 bucks to fix it. The only thing this plug under the dash does is power the annoying stop start and the trailer lights that's it, if you're not towing a trailer you can leave it out, plug it back in if you're going to tow something, it works, I've never had an issue......secondly, I don't believe for a moment that this has anything to do with the "Environment", this constant stopping and starting your engine can NOT possibly be a good thing for your car, otherwise we would have been doing it with our keys for decades, it's been a known fact that you cause the most wear and tear on your car every time you start it, that's when it has the least amount of lubricant on its internal parts. Also, isn't it funny how you're seeing more cars just stopped at lights that won't start?. This is a useless feature just like the "Tire Pressure Sensor", it's a money grab, I've had five cars and trucks and not once did I have the TPS changed (not at just over $100.00 per tire) , it's all bullshit.

Bro, people are going to do whatever they want to their vehicle. Just because YOU "don't think it's a good idea" isn't enough justification for anyone to heed your advice. If a vehicle owner disables a module that costs you valuable diag. time, then charge the customer for it. If they disable their auto-start-stop by using an OBD-II tool or something that doesn't affect any other module, then good for them, at least they are smarter than the other guy. It all comes down to personal preference and choice.

  • @netcip

Ford BMS is awfull. Not even that is not charging the battery, and it always interrupts the battery from charging, it is doing other shit things. For example, if you have an electric tailgate, this will trow a code into computer that says "short circuit open" why? because the battery is not charged when you get home and stop the car and the voltage drops.
Not only the start stop is damaging the gearbox, giving it shocks every few meters in the city, but it also damages the piston rings, because is starting and stopping the engine constantly and you will get oil burns, turbo failure and DPF failure on a diesel car. BMS and start stop are link together to F**k your car up.

Vehicle buyers are fed up with manufactures features that we have no use for. It's getting to the point that Ford is producing a Computer that has 4 wheels, and that the products are designed as a throw-a-way device. The day will soon come when Ford decides to stop support for the software that runs the vehicle, and at that point the value of the vehicle is now $0. You may not be able to drive the vehicle you paid for, yet Ford decides how long they will allow you to drive it. It will be a society that you will never own anything, and like it. You may be stuck with a vehicle you still making payments on yet the vehicle is no longer operates. Ford decided you are no longer allowed to drive the vehicle you own.
I recall the airbag problem with my Ford Mustang 2008. A recall that occurred 3 times for airbag replacement. There were no replacements, yet the owner was give the only options to park the car, or take you chance that in an accident the airbag deployment might kill you from the metal fragments. Never was an option to turn off the airbag while waiting for a replacement airbag. Buying a new Ford is becoming more difficult. You either submit to total control by Ford and its ownership, or you keep your old model and hope their will be parts to keep it running. I expect to see customers to choose not to buy new, resulting in more like you would see in Cuba of automotive junk on wheels.
Ford no longer is building Ford Tough, or Job One. Nothing like forced obsoletion while driving up the cost of owning and driving. I won't be a customer much longer, and it wont be in an electric vehicle.

I appreciate the info but you sound more sympathetic to Ford than to customers. It sounds pretty unanimous that owners of vehicles do not want start stop activated by default upon start up. That's Ford's issue--not ours and you should be an advocate for consumers instead of taking into a more corporate shill mentality... And I mean that with as little offense as possible. This is a problem of Ford's creation. I don't see you commenting on the effects of start stop on starters, battery, engine, etc long term which will really suck once owners' warranties expire. The real advice should be, plug that sucker back in before you take it in for service. Or better yet, you personally should use this experience as a learning example and integrate it into your diagnostic process that way you won't have to waste time and threaten people with charging them for time. By the way I'm a body tech and I respect you guys but I think you need to rethink your role a bit unless you enjoy manufacturers telling you how to enjoy products you buy with your hard earned money.

Thanks for the info but in all honesty Fortune stop doing shit like this. All this is is just bowing down to the tree-huggers that think this is going to save the planet when the plane is not in jeopardy. The only thing I hate about it is trying to turn left or right when you're stopped in the engine is cut off. Yes the engine picks back up pretty quick but if you're already on a hill or something like that and trying to turn into a road you have no power steering. I have not and probably will not disable it but it sucks.

This ain't about the tree-huggers this is about people getting f***** over by the dealership because they're doing stuff that they're not supposed to be doing to their vehicles and then causing frustration with diagnosing things and then they get mad when we tell them three hours is getting charged to them because of the modifications they did to their vehicle under warranty
It's pretty simple if you have an issue with your vehicle in the way of reforms grab a computer by forscan program the s*** out of it or complain to the manufacturer that's it don't make my job harder because of what you don't like because if you think you have that mindset and you have the right to do that then I'm going to charge you a bunch of money and when you don't pay you lose your vehicle and a mechanic's lien gets put on the vehicle

Now more problems have reared their ugly head. Interior lights only work occasionally, reverse sensor has changed notification tone, exterior perimeter lighting works occasionally. Dealer wants 3-5 days for analysis of the problems. I was told not to worry about it, it is a convenience option! I hope you’re trying to be sarcastic for job protection purposes. This is an excellent way to disable the stop/stop !! I realize as a ford mechanic they do not pay very well on repair costs but customer related this is a great way to quit the start stop if applying a trailer adapter is not favorable. It’s simple, unplug it everything works except the trailer brakes and auto start/ stop . If you need the trailer lights then plug back in. Maybe, possibly some models have other features involved but I have a 2018 f-150 XLT (big screen , heated seats, locking tailgate , door lock controls ect) unplugging that particular plug ONLY effects the auto start / stop and trailer brakes. I do not haul a trailer so therefore this was the best option for me. If in doubt, refer to your electronic schematics and find out for yourself. Sorry you had to waste time on diagnosis if you didn’t already realize this was an easy fix…

Well, yes the Auto Start/Stop is a PITA especially if you have mostly short distance and city driving with lots of stops and red lights. The engine is not even getting warm and all these cold starts cannot be good for the engine and nature as well. Too bad it is required by the law so that the manufacturer can get the required ratings to advertise with. Also customer is paying less taxes here since it is partially emission based.
I just use the "Auto Start/Stop Disable button" each time I start my vehicle. Nothing easier than that.
That way the engine gets a chance to get warm and the related parts get a better life expectancy.
Ford introduced the Start/Stop feature but it seems they failed to also put in stronger/more reliable starters for higher wear. I have read of a good amount failing rather early.
Do you see any of that in NA models?
Disabling this feature makes me think of people doing everything to disable the seatbelt reminder chime because they don't like to wear a seat belt. Although later one is more like applying for the Darwin Award.

Auto Boss ... thanks for abstaining on sending us the bill for your time on this video.
If this is as prevalent as you're reporting ... folks disabling ASS mode ... someone needs to wake-up and understand this system is UNDESIRED. ASS mode is for the manufacture not the person who OWNS the vehicle. The system, as you've noted with your billable time in labor troubleshooting, isn't free. It costs money and that's to the OWNER, not the tech, not the manufacturer.
    It's a system which can/will fail.
I discovered this on a 2017 I bought. Wasn't informed about this system. Was unaware of it. Shutdown happened almost immediately. TH-cam to the rescue. As you state, correctly, unplugging the connector did have other effects ... no trailer lights on my XLT. SMH!!!!
You seem to be a great tech and I appreciate those. Withhold the sermon about warranty. I never want a warranty. I want my product to perform as advertised ... which should include a significant change to the operation of the vehicle like THIS one.
I operate with the connector unplugged. Works great lasts a long time. The 2 times a year my 1/2 ton pulls a little trailer, I reconnect it. Trailer towing is for one ton diesels (of which I have also).
Have a great one out there.

@@FordBossMe OK dude. I was sincere. perhaps snarky about the bill ... but you sought it with the repetitive references to a service charge for troubleshooting a malfunction that was as simple as a connection disabled. I mean ... the reader you connected to download the codes ... right next to the unplugged connector. So ...
Consider addressing the reason for the auto start stop. It's not for the customer. It's not even for real world emissions control. It's a perception that the company is complying with an arbitrary mileage requirement. When your best seller is a truck ... your overall fleet mileage rating is gonna need some help ...
this is akin to the VWgate (and I loved that btw), but before I get accused of another excrement comment ...
Why comment? To give a greater understanding. I was curious as to the "why" in your video title. nothing more than features disabled. No way it harms the vehicle/systems in any way, so the presumption of violating a warranty is ridiculous. Which is probably why a typical dealership would seek to so cite for refusing a warranty repair.
      you have a nice day.

    • @FordBossMe
      @FordBossMe  4 ปีที่แล้ว

First of all you said at the end as to " why "
      and this video explains why
so by you re questioning why after I've already said why that just makes me think that this is all a shitshow to begin with
You obviously didn't watch the whole video or maybe you didn't obtain the information because you already had some kind of other agenda on your mind and you didn't clearly hear what I talked about in this video
which I clearly broke it down on why I could have charged back for my time because of customer modification
Now just because that connector is sitting right next to the The old port doesn't mean it's that easy to get these systems to cooperate sometimes
Sometimes it takes multiple times of going back into the computer and clearing codes out because they just won't clear out right away so there has to be more to this that you understand rather than just passing Judgment at surface-level if you don't do what I do
Plus you're not automatically going to think the reason for all the problems is because the the customer on plugged trailer lights to the ABS module to disable the auto start-stop so if you're having other issues you're going to be looking at other things first which takes time
Now when these vehicles come in I automatically look there but also I need to be compensated for my time
if I plug something back in and have to hook up a computer to clear the codes that's not a freebie there ain't nothing in life is free it's still charged so where you get this whole mindset that things are supposed to be given away because it's under warranty boggles my mind

    • @shaark92
      @shaark92 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@FordBossMe if unplugging the connection is happening so often you deemed it beneficial to make a video about it, why not start there with troubleshooting? No, you replaced a component first. I can do that and I'm just a ne'er do well.
Who's assuming what of another now? RE warranty freebie.
So again, if this is happening so often, perhaps the next production year, manufacturer would have woken-up ... but that presumes in this example, it's about the best product for the customer when it's really about "dithering" a data point to comply with an arbitrary requirement from government.
Oh ... my VW comment ... I dropped the ball on that one. It could be taken that I loved the almost 20 billion judgement. Insane! ... I loved VW's answer. It's our bought-paid-for government's emission limitation which was foul, just as this arbitrary requirement for an overall mileage average. Someone doesn't want motor vehicle diesels in less than a 3/4 Ton truck chassis. Look it up on the EPA's website on NOX allowances. The chart screams that truth. Proportional reduction with GVR ... until less than 7K lbs. Then the max drops like a lead balloon. Hmm???
The NOX limit and the "fleet mileage" requirement ... neither relevant to to suck/squeeze/bang/blow design improvement.
so your video would have been better with about 6 minutes less time and simply state: "when you pull this plug to disable auto start stop, there's a cascade of effects ... you can thank your government for ASS mode. Have a good day"
done. But we got a sermon on time spent troubleshooting and warranty work. I expect this will be rejected as well ... because I started this entire thing with a snark to rebut the main point you had ... now you're miffed.

@@shaark92 first of all when you hook up that OBD Port you've been in and out of these vehicles so much you don't get down and look up underneath the dash to see if something's unplugged your whole thinking process on that Port being so close you should see the connector being unplugged is so flawed it's unreal and a lot of us we have this muscle memory on where the connector is now we don't get down and look underneath the dash we just reach down and plug it in cuz we already know where it's at
Second of all I did specify in my return comment to you that this is a normal thing now I checked that because of how often it is so I'm not sure where half of your comment comes from because I've already specified why
I made a video in response to comments like yours to explain what I go through on a daily basis and people like you coming to this channel to leave comments you need to wake up and realize a little bit more of what we go through

Good video. I'll be checking your other out. Thanks for making this.
I have a 2015 F150 with a 5.0 V8. I love this truck. Only 75K on her and only had to do oil changes, brake pads and front vacuum hub actuators. I absolutely hate start stop along with cylinder deactivation. I get 17-18 mpg in my F150 and I am happy with this.
I have three Fords, but I'll lean to another vehicle or company that does not force this on me.

Totally agree with you! Tried this on my xlt, everything is fine, no auto stop start, no cel, but after I scanned for codes, several showed up including steering module etc etc. Plugged back in and will use the deactivate button for now.

Thank you for that and I appreciate your honesty. A lot of people like to come on here and argue with me because they don't like Ford's design but they don't like when I tell them the truth about what's going on
I'm just here trying to help people navigate this thing we call life and save them some money in the process

I had a Mazda CX-3 and wedged a piece of card between it and another switch - worked a treat - will try it on my Puma - the problem with some of these so called cures they require you to do various button pushed that are more than the one to deactivate it using the supplied off button - there are some much more annoying things going on in the car than this.. I have chimes that I cannot adjust the volume, there is a gui for the seat belts that appears at startup whether the belts are on or off and you have to press OK on the steering for it to go away..

I’ve an 18 xl model, I just turned off the auto star/stop through the settings on the dash with the steering wheel buttons and now I don’t have to push the button every time. Pretty simple. I hate assuming, but is this NOT an option on all pickups?

On the new Ranger the start stop feature is disabled by plugging in a $2 night light into the AC plug that is between the front seats in the back.

The T harness will remember to shut it off for you, its like having the truck press the button for you
    No alterations made, works great
