  • From our past videos it is apparent we love our GMC trucks but there are a few things we find annoying. The Engine Stop-Start (ESS) is by far one of the most annoying things I have found on the 2021 GMC Denali and the "AutoStop Eliminator" has change my driving experience.

    From the AutoStop Eliminator website:
Disable The Auto Stop On Your Vehicle
What is Auto Stop-Start? The Auto Stop-Start or Engine Stop-Start (ESS) vehicle feature is designed by auto manufacturers as an attempt to improve fuel economy while a vehicle is at rest. How this feature works is by when the brake is applied and the vehicle is stopped, the engine temporarily turns off and automatically restarts as the brake is released. Unfortunately, real-world fuel savings are minimal and this functionality is forced upon consumers without an option to permanently disable auto start-stop.
The AutoStop Eliminator is an intelligent device that plugs into the back of your GMC Sierra 1500 auto stop-start switch assembly. It restores your preference for auto start-stop automatically which eliminates the need to press the button after each ignition cycle.
Unlike diagnostic port solutions for GM vehicles, our device will not:
Disable the malfunction indicator light (check-engine light)
    Drain the battery
    Disable Active Fuel Management (AFM)
    Interfere with airbag functionality
Keep the vehicle in diagnostic mode

An easier and less expensive solution is to buy a trailer "flat 4" tester (4 leds)less, plug it into your trailer light connector, wrap a piece of tape around it, and you are done. The vehicle's engine control module sees the tester as a trailer connected and no longer shuts the engine off " for safety". $2/2-minute fix! I travel a lot on business trips. That means I rent a lot of cars. The Auto-Off is a total nuisance. Some cars make the button to disable Auto Off hard to find. I found a short term solution to the engine stopping. Just wiggle the steering wheel slightly and the engine will restart immediately. I would rather not buy a vehicle that requires ripping my dash apart just to disable the Auto Off. The owner should be allowed to set a default in the car's system. My Vette lets me set many preferences that remain set all the time.

I recently stumbled onto a video that studied the auto start stop function by way of engine oil analysis. The conclusion was that less wear particles were generated with auto start stop functional. With the function disabled the engine had higher idle time which means higher fuel dilution levels which is the main contributor to lower viscosity and higher wear levels. Interesting case study.

Thank you for going to all the trouble to post this very helpful video. I was still leery of this involved installation process, but being reasonably mechanically inclined (and some would give me more credit than this) I decided to go for it...even at 76 years of age. The Autostop Eliminator website has links to its own installation video, but I found your step-by-step video to be far superior. I would hit pause after each key point and head out into the garage to get past that same point, then return to your video and head to the next step. Granted, these instructions are specific to nearly identical vehicles, but having a 2022 Silverado this video met my needs perfectly.
I would greatly encourage anyone considering purchasing and installing the Autostop Eliminator to watch this full video first. This would help you decide if this is a project that you want to tackle yourself. (Installation will likely take considerably longer than you might think.) There are plenty of opportunities to make mistakes--especially with damaging trim--but if you are detail-oriented and careful this is definitely doable. I am EXTREMELY pleased to have this modification. Some of us simply don't like to have this level of government mandated irritation forced upon us. Not everyone's driving situations are identical, and we should be entitled to have some personal control over what we purchase.

Thanks for the video, it is great. This is how they should be from the factory. I listened to a car in front of me at a four way stop. It had to start stop at least 8 times as we worked our way up to the stop sign. So let alone the wear and tear that causes, now the alternator is causing more engine load while it tries to charge the battery back up. I'm willing to bet that caused more fuel usage then it could have possibly saved in the 5 seconds the engine was off between stops. If ESS works for you then cool. Where I live it is a problem and I'm 99% sure when you factor in everything it is causing more pollution. One size will never fit all so give us the option.

I've had the Auto Stop Start Eliminator installed in my 22' Maverick since new and now have 18,000+ miles with no problems. Since my Maverick has a button on the center console, I can easily still use the Auto Stop Start function if I see I'm going to be stopped in a drive thru or stopped in traffic for awhile. So I recommend the Eliminator for any vehicle with a Auto Stop Start button.
Lastly, my Maverick has an auxiliary engine coolant pump that operates when the engine is in the "Auto Stop" mode ... basically I recommend to use the Auto Stop Start function every once in awhile to circulate the engine coolant in the hoses leading to and from a pump like that.
Edit: Wow, that was a lot of trim disassembly just to do a simple plug and play. My experience was much easier. Get on the driver-side floor and look up in the dash. Unplug the OBD 2 wiring harness, plug in the Eliminator between the harness and the OBD 2 backside and secure the dongle thing. Done

I saw a police video where a couple approached a scene of a fleeing criminal with a firearm. In the confusion, the car shut off leaving the couple vulnerable. The criminal did shoot; he didn't get into the car, the passenger got shot in the leg, the car started moments later, and they then drove away. Had the car not shut off, they could have sped away sooner as they realized what was happening. What made it worse was the criminal was abandoning a stolen police car that he crashed, so it was even more confusing; the firearm was a rifle. A very low probability, but a warning of when auto-shutoff can really be a problem.
I am also wary of auto-braking - all a carjacker needs to do is get in front of a car and simply stop.

Now my engine runs continually till I turn off the key. I love 1980's technology, and back, and back, and back when things were so much simpler, and for the better. Just get a Pulsar LT. Plugs into the harness under the hood in less than 5 minutes. Gives you start stop disable, throttle response selections, top end limit can be changed, recalibration to tire size, and a few more features. No taking the dash apart. May want to give it a try especially if you plan on changing your tire size or if you want much better throttle response that you can change on the fly. It’s really great.

Great product but the Pulsar LT cost $500 and it’s not available for a 23 model Yukon XL. The other factor is if your going for any service, especially warranty service you really have to remove the Pulsar LT and spend 30 minutes driving so the computer will be normal for diag by the dealer. Depending on the dealer they could fight on warranty work due to the pulsar plugged in. This product at least gives back your right to NOT have Auto Stop Start without any detection. If your going to have service set it to be on prior to dropping it off. It’s not likely they will find it and won’t be by seeing a black box attached with Velcro on your truck plugged into the factory computer harness. I’m more or less sold on this and besides in a Yukon XL it’s way easier to install !!!

By law, a factory or dealer CANNOT deny a warranty claim due to the presence of aftermarket equipment UNLESS they can prove IN WRITING that the aftermarket part caused the failure that triggered the warranty claim. Look it up. This is federal law. The dealership and or the factory can be sued for denying warranty claims in violation of the law.

I just did what Full Octane Garage did step by step until finished. So much easier to simply following along. Hats off to your expertise. The wiring kit was an easy $90 well spent as it is a brand new truck and now no more of that start-stop baloney. New subscriber for sure. I believe there is a second battery under the driver seat which is used to keep services running when the engine stops and saves you from hammering the main battery. I have a 2019 Silverado and even with this feature still on, that battery is just about dead and my engine hasn’t stopped within the last year and a half. I think the car is programmed not to stop if the battery cant handle things. I think its also responsible for starting the car when its in Auto start too and you need a good strong battery to do all that. So thats probably the easier way. If you notice, at a stop with auto stop engaged your vehicle will stay off for longer if you aren’t using AC. With AC on, my truck always started back up on its own after about 60 to 120 seconds and got shorter over time as that battery aged till the last year+ where i started to notice it not stopping anymore.

The easiest fix for cars/trucks with that feature, but do have an "L" setting with the + and - buttons, is don't put your transmission to "D" - put it to "L" then use the + button on the shifter to the highest gears available, eg, 9 if it's a 9 gear drive. The car will then drive and shift up and down it's full gear range perfectly normally, but it bypasses the auto stop.

@@moonbounce You sound fully confident, so it well may be that I am the one who is mistaken. This nevertheless puzzles me since the Autostop Eliminator that I installed is within inches of the original dash button and is wired in series with the adjacent connectors.
Now here's my edit: I did discover a TH-cam video by 4D Tech entitled "Jeep Grand Cherokee DISABLE Auto Start/Stop Feature - Turn ON and OFF permanently! [2018-2021]" I don't know if this is the same Autostop product or not, but in this case the (much simpler) installation required the removal of only one flimsy panel under the dash in front of the passenger seat.
