Surely you still need the engine running for aircon to turn the compressor? Here in Europe the manufacturers love these Start-Stop devices - I always disable it on my friend's Land Rover - we have an extra issue. We have a lot of turbo diesels and if you want a turbo to live a long time you should let it idle for 30 seconds at start-up and before shutting off the engine (called simmering) to ensure cooler oil reaches the turbo bearings. Stop-Starts don't always alklow this leading to premature turbo failure.
We call that coking the turbo here. The oil cokes up, or cooks, in the turbo from the heat. Same issue on the Eco-boost gas engines. The air conditioning does not have a compressor running, but while turned off it cuts the fan in half and still pushes cooler air. In the summer, it sucks.
I just unplug the black wire under the dash that plugs into white box. The one that controls my trailer lights. Whenever I hook up my trailer I plug it back in.
Thanks for the video!! START/STOP does NOT save gas (much)!! It takes MORE fuel to start a gasoline engine than to run it for a short while. I came across an option while perusing the 2022 order form and found an option to have the start/stop shut off at the factory. People looking to order a new vehicle from Ford might want to ask about it. It might be a fleet option, I couldn't tell from the form I saw.
I don't know about old RAV4s, but the newer ones would never turn off with something like the AC on. They look at 50 parameters before they turn off. So if outside temp is too cold, won't turn off either.
Well I must be weird because I have an F150 2015 Platinum that stickered over $50 ,000.and it has every conceivable option on it except start/stop.I go to Florida for the winter and some of their traffic lights are literally 5 minutes long.Thats a lot of wasted gas.My last F150 came with it and I got used to it for that reason..I would gladly trade for s/s and get rid of the lane change alert that grabs your steering wheel unless you stay perfectly between the hi way lines.Or the second option I detest is adaptive speed control [cruise].I just want to drive my truck the way I have been doing for yrs. and not how some engineer decided how you will pilot your vehicle .I dont understand why people are waiting for self driving cars.We wont be in control but just get in and sit and be driven as if we re on a streetcar...

Call me cheap but $100 is a bit expensive for this hardware. I went with the free option of unplugging the black connecter (bottom one of 3) on the box just under the steering wheel. The only downside of this is that it removes the power to the tow lights, but for a guy like me who might tow something once every 2 years, I can just plug it back in for the trip.
The one that you plug in behind the switch is just a latching toggle-switch type electronic gate that does the same thing as shorting the wires. If you’re comfortable with your abilities you can just put a toggle switch in its place. I’d probably put an appropriately sized fuse in line too just to be safe.
Nice! When I was car shopping I eliminated all with that annoying start/stop "feature". Now I have options. Anyone know why Chevy back-up lights (white) come one when parked /off ? I always think they are backing up in parking lots. Wtf?
That feature drives me crazy too. Always see those back up lights on, and think it’s someone backing up, but it’s just them getting out of the car or similar. It can cause an accident in a parking lot 🤦♂️
Brett Mullis 1 second ago I agree. Just remember to plug back before visiting the dealership. Also if towing a trailer or camper. If not the lights on the back will not work. I forgot one time ...
be aware it will affect other systems. My '17 F150 XLT 2.7 V6 ... loses the trailer brake lights. sigh. Higher end/features ... I know the tailgate release and a touch door handle on the Platinum ... those features are also lost. It seems like Ford designed this to be a real bugger to debug. pony-up $100 for the plug-in deal ... or get to re-wiring.
My Chrysler Pacifica Limited has a ton of different settings for everything from mirrors to lighting, and everything in between. It would have been nice to have a setting to turn off auto stop, but unfortunately you have to remember to turn off the switch every time you start it. I chose the auto stop eliminator. It took 15 minutes to install, and now I don't have to think about it.
I took me about three weeks to learn to do it as a conditioned reflex. And since my grandson is a superhero fan, he happily reminds me to push the "Avengers Button!"
undo single plug at battery negative that monitors battery voltage/condition for stop/start system...no reference voltage...no stop/start....turns on "stop/start deactivated" icon on dash.
On my 2018 F150 I just unplugged the wire to my negative battery post. Open the hood and find the battery. On the negative battery post are two tiny wires one red and one purple with a single plug that plugs into a sealed electrical component that is mounted on the wires attaching to the negative battery post. If it takes more than a minute from the time you pull the hood release, your doing something wrong.
I just installed an Auto Stop Eliminator on my 2020 F150. I was easy to fit in the dash. The same company also sells an OBD version but I figured I would never want to not have it on plus I use my OBD connector every once in a while for other stuff.
I have a way that costs ZERO money. Pop the hood and locate the negative battery terminal. Unplug the tiny wire harness plug. This is the battery state of charge sensor. That's it, you have now disabled start/stop. It will not throw an engine code or affect anything else. The bonus is that it disables Sync 3 anti playlist scrolling. Now my passenger can scroll music with out it locking.
You have done exactly what the FORScan module does to remove the Start Stop and that does effect your charging system. It does work, but long term there are some downsides.
@@jeffmayberry4064 That “charging sensor” acts like a trickle charger and sets parameters to when the battery gets charged by the alternator. Supposed to start charging when the battery level drops below xx and stops the charging when the battery level reaches yy. These were never in “older”vehicles as stated in this video. Older cars kept constantly charging the battery. This system is “supposed” to extend the battery life by not keeping the battery at constant charge of 100%. Instead it keeps it about 80% fully charged and may kick on when it drops below say 70%. I’ve heard this system has actually prevented batteries from functioning long term because they never get to be fully charged, like they used to in them older vehicles 🤔🤫?? That being said, I do believe it’s there to keep the power somewhat consistent so all those chips in your new vehicle don’t get any surges or drops to prevent hiccup in the software or hardware.. much like home computers usually are plugged into power surge protectors?? Just my two cents.
@@SA-hk8xj I've had mine unhooked for nearly a year now. Doesn't seem to affect anything. I'll report back if I see any ill effects. Pretty sure it just monitors the battery voltage, so the system knows when to restart the engine after extended periods of "auto stop".

I heard another way is I guess when you pull a trailer the auto shut off wont happen so to trick the system to think your towing a trailer is to get a trailer light tester ( like $4) and plug it in where you would plug in your trailer lights. Would like to know if this actually works
It will work, but it also disables other things. Even your backup camera won't work. Spend a few bucks and get the Eliminator. That way if you decide you want the start/stop to work, you just push the dash button to enable it. The device remembers whether you had the system on or off when you last shut the car down, and keeps that setting on the next startups until you change it with the switch. It doesn't affect any other systems, unlike all the so-called "free" solutions.
I have a 2019 f150 alt and I didnt have to buy anything to disable the auto start stop function. There is a wire you disconnect on the driver sie by the harness panel and you just pull that wire out and u dont have to worry about the start stop function. The guy that showed how to do this is on utube and his young son did it. The problem is that its been so long that I cant remember the link. You can search for the F150 Ford truck that explains how to do it. Its easy and simple and it doesnt interfere with anything nad I have been using it for a couple of years with no problems of any kind...look for it on utube its the father telling his boy to disconnect the wire. sorry i cant remember the link shoulldnt be too hard to find... and it doesnt cost anything..
I noticed the voltage on your truck was first at 12.5 then 14.5. Was the 12.5 when the truck not running and th e14.5 a running voltage? You should do a video about FORD's BMS Battery Monitor System. Generally a battery would be fully charged state at 12.6 volts... 2.1 volts per cell, but with Fords BMS it prohibits the battery from accepting a ''full charge''. It's a weird concept to wrap your head around.
the device at 5 20 that plugs in i dont see it at the link you provided? they only have the one where you have to take the cover off to get to it? where can i get the small box one that just plugs in to the computer. ty
On my silverado the plug on the battery has apparently shaken loose all by itself. No idea how that happened. Hope I remember to tell the dealer when next I need service. I'll just have to live without it for now, sigh.
Just disconnect the black plug on the trailer tow module down by the brake pedal and it deactivates the auto stop start just plug it back in when you decide to tow.
Also disables park assist (throws a slip differential error if you hit the button for park assist). That being said, who actually uses park assist?!?!?
Takes me longer to pick my nose than to press the little disable button and now I don't worry about forgetting to reconnect the frkn trailer lights and getting pulled over for no lights after having a couple of refreshments at the boat dock. I know people hate nannys but seriously, every hack I've researched for disabling this idiotic but simple-to-press-a-disable button system has drawbacks. No thanks. I'm just hoping in 10 years this dumb "fuel saving" measure is history anyway. Until then, pressing the button is as habitual for me as putting the vehicle in gear....
so your only objection to FORScan is that it changes the charging system? Do you know how? Will the alternator still produce at least 13.8 volts with rated amperage after a big draw (e.g. cold engine start)? That seems to be a minor change to dump the ASS mode which may result in coking a turbocharger bearing, which is much more significant. e.g ... hauling a load in the bed or even just spirited operation will raise the exhaust temperature to such that a sudden loss of oil pressure will result in the stagnant oil to "coke" (sp?) on the bearing ... reduced life ... replacing a turbocharger because of ASS Mode. I have a '17 F150 XLT 2.7 V6 ... TWO turbochargers (I'm still not sure how that works, one will ALWAYS have higher pressure than the other, but whatever) ... they both are powered by exhaust gas, which gets pretty hot. Especially for a little V6 trying to move that 1000# payload.. If idle exhaust gas temperature isn't allowed to "cool" the turbine bearings ... coking. That happens pretty fast, too, depending upon the oil condition. I just downloaded the FORScan app to my laptop and ordered the ELM cable. Apparently the OBD cable I have for my VW Jetta TDI doesn't ... work. IDK what the difference would be ... but there's something different about the wiring in that cable. I intend to disable ASS mode with FORScan. If the electrical system doesn't properly recharge the battery, then I'll reset it and drop $100, I suppose, on the eliminator. I've been doing the unplug deal, but it disables the trailer lights. connecting an LED plug into the trailer lights ... disables the obstruction sensors and the back-up camera. Sigh. There's an option to partially disassemble the dash and run a jumper wire in the ASS mode switch itself. That's probably the best overall for disabling that ridiculous feature, but it also means likely dash rattles, because all the plastic never reassembles the second time as well as the first on the assembly line. It's almost as if Ford knew its customers would detest this thing. If they'd made this a stand-alone system, that plug on the module serving ONLY the switch on the dash, then they could have showed the government their jury-rigged mileage numbers with ASS mode ... and, though still increasing the purchase price of the vehicle, facilitated an owner-initiated reset to something NORMAL people would accept. thanks for your video on this.
A normal OBD II cable will not work. It needs to be able to switch between modes. Ford had a smart charge system that controls the charging of the battery. You can watch it work on your dash if you want when driving. When you disable that, it is also able to be seen. I like what ford does especially when towing. I would not disable it personally.
@@WorkshopAddict what do you mean you like what Ford does when towing? A Chevy car guy way back, I've become a fan of Ford Trucks the last 20 years ... they DO perform well. Currently have a 2011 6.7 PSD that tows 25K# of hay/equipment regularly. But I don't know how ASS mode is relevant to THAT. I'm curious about this "smart charging" system though. How is it better than a standard regulator "opening" the armature to produce more amps/volts on a battery/electrical demand? Does this mean it actually stops charging with a "good" battery and lower relative demand (heat/a-c off, headlights off)? Rabbit chase ... sorta ... but my Jetta actually has a clutch on the alternator for this varying load purpose. yes, it had to be changed. sigh. As has been stated, if the producers of these OBD plug-ins would charge $15-$20, it'd be a "no brainer" ... the cost of the ELM cable, but with FORScan, I'm supposed to be able to change many settings ... fog lights, door unlock, seat belt warning, to name a couple ... but $100 per feature, that's kinda steep. I'll report back. Thanks for your reply.
I just watched a video and guy just discnnected his trailer lights and signals plug, said it worked fine if hauling a trailer make sure you remember to plug back in???? ever heard of that sound too simple
if using the FORScan software to disable the autolock feature for the doors, does this also alter the battery management system? I have a 2020 f150 which doesn't have the AutoLock checkbox under the advanced settings menu. I know that with Forscan you can add the AutoLock checkbox to the menu display, and simply leave the box unchecked to prevent the doors from automatically locking while driving. I was wanting to resolve this issue with forscan, but i wanted to know if doing this will also change the battery management system.

I installed the Start stop eliminator, in my 2022 f150 2 month after I bought it. 2yrs and still working.
Yes, weird.... Florida people usually hate the loss of AC when the truck turns off.

Simplest way is hold button in and jam a toothpick in the crack to hold button in. DONE
If someone would just manufacture an identical switch, but not make it a momentary switch, make it latching switch.
The one that you plug in behind the switch is just a latching toggle-switch type electronic gate that does the same thing as shorting the wires. If you’re comfortable with your abilities you can just put a toggle switch in its place. I’d probably put an appropriately sized fuse in line too just to be safe.
Great video that covered viable options. I ordered the harness from your link.
Nice! When I was car shopping I eliminated all with that annoying start/stop "feature". Now I have options. Anyone know why Chevy back-up lights (white) come one when parked /off ? I always think they are backing up in parking lots. Wtf?
Possibly to give the driver lighting to exit the car? Maybe the same reason they put lights on battery powered push mowers. :)
That feature drives me crazy too. Always see those back up lights on, and think it’s someone backing up, but it’s just them getting out of the car or similar. It can cause an accident in a parking lot 🤦♂️
Hi, does it work also for honda ridgeline 2020? If so, can you pls give me the link where can I purchase it. I'm from Ontario Canada Thanks

Just unplug it under the dash it's a small black wire and clip and when you step on the brake the Icon comes on but the engine doesn't shut off

I agree.
Does the auto stop cause the engine light? When it’s not working properly It turns off turns back on, and the wrench comes on. 6:18
Can you just disconnect the plug behind the brake to eliminate start/stop?
Not without a CEL

I have a 2019 F150 5.0. Once in a great while when you go to start makes a loud boom any ideas
Where do I find one of those bypasses for my 19 f150?
undo single plug at battery negative that monitors battery voltage/condition for stop/start system...no reference voltage...no stop/start....turns on "stop/start deactivated" icon on dash.
I like the plug in option and wondered if it was available for my 2019 GMC Sierra 1500?
I do not see a plug and play, but found this that most people use. www.autostopeliminator.com/store/c11/auto-stop-start-disable-gmc-sierra-2019.html
Does this method of disabling Auto start-stop do it, by disabling battery monitoring, as is the case with Forscan method?
No, the battery monitoring is still active.
i cannot find your recommended ODB2 for 2021 f150 xlt ? is it me or are they not avaiable for 2021 truck models?
Anyone try to plug in a trailer light tester into the rest Port, it is supposed to signal the truck has a trailer and disable the start/stop
It will disable the start stop but also disables other things like backup alarms and blis.
the link shows the wire in harness, where is the plug in under the dash?
Who manufactures the one that plugs into the obd port?
I have a way that costs ZERO money. Pop the hood and locate the negative battery terminal. Unplug the tiny wire harness plug. This is the battery state of charge sensor. That's it, you have now disabled start/stop. It will not throw an engine code or affect anything else. The bonus is that it disables Sync 3 anti playlist scrolling. Now my passenger can scroll music with out it locking.
You have done exactly what the FORScan module does to remove the Start Stop and that does effect your charging system. It does work, but long term there are some downsides.
Can someone explain what unplugging this wire actually does? I read about this and tried it on my truck, but I'm not sure what else it affects.
@@jeffmayberry4064 I've had mine unhooked for about two years. No effect other than eliminating the annoyance of start/stop. If my truck explodes one day or suddenly catches fire I'll let you know.
But so far it seems like the simplest solution to a maddening problem added by Ford to placate Big Nanny and bug its customers.
Hey does the auto start stop plug mess up the warranty??

Hello, will that start stop eliminator work on a 2022 Ford Transit 350HD Cargo Van with the 3.5 ECOBoost engine?
I bought a 2023 f150 and three things are driving me nuts.
1. This issue.
2. I wanted to remember that I had it in Eco because I just had to run to Aldi's... And I can change things if I need to haul something right?
3. I have everything Android paid for and when I hit the talk button I just want Android to hear me. I currently have to hit the mic button on screen of Android Auto. I had a much better experience in my 2016 Hyundai. Unreal.
I think a test drive these days should also include a test drive of the freaking utilities.
It sucks Everytime you get in the truck and have to remember to hit off I'm just going to have to get used to it because if you buy a device to eliminate auto start stop Incase of fire I'm sure Ford will find a way to say that you caused the issue so thanks but I just have to deal with it I just bought my 2020 f150 platinum
Can you tell me where to get this product at.
Unfortunately those two options are not available for Honda Ridgeline.
How do you know for sure that disabling it with foreskin also disables the smart charging system?

On my silverado the plug on the battery has apparently shaken loose all by itself. No idea how that happened. Hope I remember to tell the dealer when next I need service. I'll just have to live without it for now, sigh.
Just disconnect the black plug on the trailer tow module down by the brake pedal and it deactivates the auto stop start just plug it back in when you decide to tow.
WorkshopAddict Does this work? What are the side affects?
That is the perfect hack and it works like a charm

This feature is bad for the battery, bad for the starter and bad for the engine ($$$$). And it's utterly unnerving. I hate it. It's a battery eater and the proof of it is that start/stop is automatically put to off when outside temperature is 4 celsius or less.
Finally it does no good for environment as replacing these parts has its ecological print, far exceeding the negligible fuel economy. (Except for certain exceptionnal situations like a big trafic jam or waiting in line at the car wash.)
I think it will be withdrawn some day, or at least disabling it become permanent until you put it on again.
