Very good information for people. We service a fleet of Transit T350. They all have the 3.5 turbo. Some are now nearing 300,000 miles. Ford oil filter and a good full synthetic oil, every 3,000 miles. All of fluids every 50,000. Other then spark plugs and coils. The engine have been bullet proof. We do see EVAP systems, purge valve issues along with rear brake slider sticking the calipers.
I agree 100%. I can't stand to hear background NOISE that some of these characters ADD to their vids. It is annoying at best. When I come across it , I give them a thumbs down in every case, and move on. This vid is great.

I am an old retired master mechanic that owns a 2014 F-150 with Eco Boost. I change oil and Wix filter every 5000 miles. When I bought the truck it came with "free (ha) service. every 10,000 miles, I told the dealer no thanks and do them myself. I put it up on my lift and check everything and so far no major problems. I have seen trucks that go 15,000 miles between oil changes and they are in for repairs a lot. Every oil service I clean the THREE intake sensors and I also drilled the intercooler. My routine maint. Great video, you know what you are talking about!
Calling it stretching is a misnomer and is the problem people have. The chain does not stretch in the slightest, the pins and bushings wear out causing elongation, nothing more.
Ok TH-cam, here's my message, I wanted to upvote, but three tries later, I got the comments entry instead of actually the up arrow. You suck, I'm going to watch videos now and not upvote. It's your fault TH-cam for being stupid.
Wow! Finally a mechanic that seems to have a terrific grasp on an engine, (and on pertinent issues to do with that engine.) Also, to have the parts laid out, and explain exactly what we are talking about... then he is able to explain this entire thing where a common man can understand is amazing nowadays! Very well done! And a new subscriber, I feel like you earned it brother!
@@robo5877 whatever... you have missed the point. These people got more respect back in my day when they were “ mechanics”-which is what my comment is about. This harkens back to the day when the person fixed your car. Not watched a TH-cam video and then worked on your vehicle.
@@robo5877 oh! Then I apologize! You are one of the fellows that I am hoping is assigned to my truck. No substitute for experience in my opinion. Thanks for your dedication.
I would listen to the advice this young mechanic provides over an over-educated mechanical engineer with no practical experience in the field. He should be the poster-child of the types of students that are benefiting from trade school education - a fine example. As said before he could be an inspiration to other young students deciding whether it is worth incurring over a hundred thousand dollar debt for a "college" experience. Bravo to you Dustin and great success.
@@petrosspetrosgali I was wondering that myself. I have a '19 HO 3.5 in my Raptor. I was wondering what changes since '17 and what differences or issues might be specific to the Raptor's High Output. Overall I thought he did an excellent job of breaking it down and I really appreciated the overview on the engine. I imagine the 5000km (3000 mile) oil change on regular oil recommendation is Ford's synthetic blend?
Late to the party but this is top notch content. The way you communicate and provide the workings of this engine is outstanding. You should be teaching your profession in an apprenticeship program.
Awesome explanations...I’ve been running the 3.5L Ecoboost since 2011. I have 240K on that one, still going strong. I loved it so much I bought a 2015 last year ( low miles). I change the oil every 3-4K, no exceptions. I’ve run the 5W-30 synthetic blend it called for since the beginning and I do the same for the 2015. I’m a firm believer in pm’s especially oil changes...probably the cheapest thing you can do for your motor. Ecoboost - lb for lb, best motor I’ve ever run. Towing / efficiency, can’t beat it
yeah when i put my 6,000 lb boat behind it i was shocked how easily it went up a 7200ft pass with no effort--i kept it at 50mph but it would have gone way past that
I have a 2014 Ford F-150 with 84k and the Timing Chain stretched 2 Links while driving it to Texas in March of 2024 and it stopped dead on IH-35 outside of Austin Texas! Truck towed to the nearest Ford Dealership and they pulled the engine apart and changed the Timing Chain and all the stuff in between, received the Truck 28 days later and it seems like a new truck? That was over a $10,000. Tune Up to get it done correctly! It feels like it has the power when needed to make a difference in acceleration!
I was prepared for a major Ford bashing. Thank you for an honest video. Preventive maintenance is the key to any mechanical device. Do what the book says, and all will be good. Also glad you hit on economy. People don't realize that for any amount of work, it takes a certain amount of power. Weather V-8 or turbo V-6. Power takes fuel. But most trucks drive around empty. That is where economy is maximized. My 2018 F-150 has gotten 27 MPG on the highway, granted by setting cruise control at the speed limit for the 70 miles . In the same situation, a 5.0 wouldn't get that good of mileage.
I bought my 2022 F150 XLT 3.5 4x4 just a month ago and I absolutely love it. Runs like bullet, really smother when it comes to driving quality, and MPG is decent ( I get around 19.5~20). I test drove Chevy, Toyota, and Ram, and I thought the F150 is the no.1 option in the list and this thought is never going to be changed I think. Overall, I’m extremely happy with my F150! Thanks for giving me a great information sir!

Wow! I was in the car business for a long time...never had the pleasure if meeting such a well spoken, informed tech....and I was at new car dealerships.
3.5 owner. 189000. Only problem leaking coolant from turbo. Have done everything you suggested. Very happy with it. Would buy another if I need to. This engine has been very strong. Very smooth.
Thank you sooo much for that information. The real problem I see is IF I have a problem and do not go to Ford to fix it, the secondary mechanics shops that work on these engines whom profess to be a custom or good shop DO NOT replace all the stuff needed when you have this problem, they go in and fix the problem itself and do not change the other components while there as preventative maintenance, then there are problems that occur from the other components and the engine has to be torn down again to replace one other component. Education and getting the right mechanic for these engines is very very important, thank you for your education for the public, this was a great video and very transparent as well..!!
Yeah it's a problem alright: no cylinder deactivation, no plastic oil/transmission pans like the 5.0, 22 mpg city, 29 mpg highway. I can't wait for gas to go to $5 a gallon again.
LOL no,. Look up more videos. That engine is a pile of shit. He didn't address the dozen other problems with this engine. This guy is blaming oil for all it's issues lol. What a load of bullshit.
Nice that someone else agrees about the use of Full Synthetic Oils. I try to to explain that to my customers all the time. Proper maintenance is key to the longevity of just about any modern engine but unfortunately people still don't do it. Nice Video! Very Good Explanation.
I was glad to hear Dustin say to open it up now and then; we do that without knowing it's a good thing. I would like to have a dashboard vacuum gauge to see when it's over 5 lbs. On the Mass Pike with our 2015 Expedition at the speed limit another car kept repeatedly inching up alongside then falling back, and I got tired of that, so I looked at my wife and said "if that black chevy pulls on me one more time he's going to find out what twin turbos are all about! My 3 daughters in the back seat yelled "Do it Dad!" Today all 3 are excellent drivers. [ I'll bet Dustin has all the ladies (& gay boys) coming in for service ] What a direct and well-spoken guy.
Great video. Very articulate mechanic who knows his stuff. Thanks for taking the time to explain how the timing chain system works in the 3.5 EB. Well done!
I just got a TT Stinger--was very worried about reliabilty but talked to a KIA tech like this guy.Maintain it at the dealer and get the oil change at 3k.KIA warrants theres for 10 years because they believe in it.Like someone said it is customers who skip maintenence.
Ive had mine for five years. No issues at all with the engine. Only fear I have is IF and its a big IF, that if there is a mechanical failure the cost of a new engine used and new is 6k to 10K respectively

Excellent video and insight into the 3.5 EcoBoost. We purchased a 2012 F-150 this spring. 109K and runs great. Would really love to see a simple boost gauge setup so I know how much we are working the turbos. Thanks again
I've been building engines just about since I could walk. Trust me, I'm older than dirt and I started with the mighty Ford flatheads and then everything from there on up......multiple carbs, hot cams, ported/aftermarket heads/headers/ you-name-it. I raced on the street, the strip, and roundy-round with Fords, Chevy's, Mopars and can curse fluently in all the "big 3" languages. I've sort of gotten left behind with the computers and, somewhat, the overhead cams. This upload is a masterpiece of good explanations and I subscribed at the halfway point. I have been wondering which of the rumors/info/etc I've heard on the Ford Ecoboost were valid and which were simply old wives tales. I am considering getting a Ford Ecoboost and this addressed a lot of my misgivings. I've always favored more cubes and power than I need.....in case I NEED IT! This youTube helped me evaluate my options. I especially liked your comment on synthetic oil. Thanks again and Keep the Faith. Tom

robert mullen nah, I believe he’s just tired of fixing these trucks and telling people what to do to make them last. Stay on the gas huh, then what’s stretching the timing chains? You drive it easy and you risk turbo problems?
@@365handle they aren't related. The chain failure is due to lack of maintenance. He said he recommends sooner oil changes than the 15k 3-5k is better and use premium oil and filters. The turbo problem is due to people not letting it open on the regular.

DUDE! One of the best videos on ANY topic I have ever seen! OUTSTANDING explanation of complex mechanical systems - complex at least to a layman like me. As I consider a truck purchase for the mountains THANK YOU for taking time to produce this useful video!
I've stayed with my 02 5.4 F150 for 14 years. 615k miles later it was time to replace the old truck, I was skeptical of the eco boost (2 turbo issues) but the tow rating beats the 5.0 trucks... I did my homework, talked to several eco boost owners and a few 5.0 owners and nobody had any thing but good to say about the eco boost trucks. So I bought a 2020 Eco boost f150 and I love the hell out of that thing.
Awesome video. I'm a first time at your channel and now a subscriber. I have a 2018 2.7L EcoBoost and absolutely love it. But of course those turbos are always in the back of my mind. So love the video when talking about how to care for and also how and when to maintenance the vehicle. I'll keep my oil changes at 5 to 6 thousand miles and be sure give my waste gates the exercise they need. Lol. Please do a 2nd gen 2.7L EcoBoost review or a comparison of the 1st and 2nd gen 2.7L EcoBoost and your thoughts on the GDI block and dual port and direct injection system. Keep up the good work!!
Been driving a 3.5 since 2014. 135,000 miles on it. Only problem I’ve had with the engine has been O2 sensors. Semi synthetic oil every 5k. Great engine so far.
Glad to see a video not bashing the 3.5l's. I have a 19 Expedition and I love it. The ecoboost sold me on the truck. I drove 6.2 Denalis and there was no comparison when it came to low end torque these big vehicles need to get going.
Love the EcoBoost tech an performance! Owned both gen1 & gen2 EcoBoost in various Fords. Never had any issues nor have friends/family. Key is exactly as said.. an easy.. full synthetic oil ONLY w/motorcraft filters or better @5k mi interval max.
I bought a 2020 Ford Ecoboost this year and I've only used the Boost feature less than 10 times but after seeing this video it seems it's a good idea to drive it on boost more often to open those gates he was talking about.

I bought a 2012 Lincoln MKT With the 3.5 ecoboost, and 105K and the timing chain error code on. The dealer had the timing chains, sensors, etc, replaced. I now have 112k and it runs really well. I did change over to Mobil 1 synthetic oil as soon as I got it home. Impressive power.
Great informational video- correct it is imperative to change the oil and filter every 5-6K with only full synthetic. My 2012 F-150 ECO now has 253K and aside from a current MAF issue (needs to be properly spray cleaned) the truck runs great. Another tip my mechanic advised especially on the older 1st generation ECOs is when operating for extended trips is to allow the engine to idle 2-3 minutes allowing the fluids to circulate through the turbos before turning off. Anything to extend the life of the ECO is important. Don't forget the transmission flush which along with the radiator which I do at the dealer at least every 40K after I hit 100K. Small price of preventive maintenance to possibly avoiding large repair bills if you plan to drive over well over 100K.
Having had diesels in the past, if driving on the highway, especially towing hills, I'd let the truck run until exhaust temps lowered to 300 degrees, so says the pyrometer. Of course their is no pyrometer on these F150's (of which mine is a 3.5 as well, and running fine at 130k+ miles) and although I don't tow, if I've run it a little harder than normal, I'll wait 30 seconds before shutting down. I am one of the one's that drives for fuel mileage, so every now and again, have to remember to allow the turbo's to incorporate some power...but I don't often, as I want to remain above 18 mpg around town if at all possible, which it can do if I drive it sensibly. I just bought a case of Motorcraft semi-synthetic (as per the manual states for oil changes) but I do change right at 5,000 miles or prior to. I'll switch over to Penzoil Platinum full synthetic once my Motorcraft is gone.
Excellent video. If you ever get tired of working the tools you should get into the teaching/instruction field. You have a natural ability to communicate in a way that everyone can get the message.

Great video explaining the fact that these engines need to have regularly scheduled oil changes. Just like the Triton 5.4l change the oil ever 3000 to 3500 miles with synthetic oil and the engines are dependable. Another great point is the fuel economy. Bottom line if you need a vehicle like a full size pickup you really can't expect to get the same mileage as per say a Toyota corolla. It's common sense.
It really doesn't matter that much in terms of synthetic v conventional. Synthetic just has different flow characteristics. Oil never stops being oil. You don't change oil, You are draining unburned gasoline. The sooner the better. Either oil gets just as contaminated that's the bad part. With synthetic you have some overall better long term wear.
Thanks, I have a 2015 f150 Ecoboost and I love it .it has 92,000 on it now and still running strong. Would like to put one in my 1949 F1. I always change the oil and filter every 7,500. Only thing I don't like is all the covers I have to take off to change it, but I deal with it.
First, thanks for the video. I was a mechanic for over 30 years. I was brought up working on automotive electrical systems, may father owned an automotive electrical shop. I opened an automotive A/C and radiator shop and operated it from 1973 to 2003. You seem very knowledgeable on the 3.5L EcoBoost V6. What happens when the water pump starts to leak?
The trouble is in our job , customers have not been brought up with modern technology, they don't understand that you will wreck your engine if you don't service it , they always want to skimp on repairs , would rather have their hair done or new nails , then cry when it's gonna cost a packet to fix , we as motor vehicle repairers , have not yet joined the magic circle so have no magic wand to fix it , great video , fully agree , same shit over here in the UK , in Jaguar engines
It doesn’t help that the manufacturers have stretched the recommended maintenance intervals in the name of selling “lower cost of maintenance” to the buyer. Case in point...Nearly every automaker that uses the ZF 8HP transmission says it’s “fill for life” while ZF explicitly recommends changing the fluid at 8yr/100000km.
In the last 100 years or so, what car/engine hasn't begun to fail without proper maintenance? Sloppy maintenance (especially of the engine) is like giving bad luck a disproportionate chance to wreck things while giving the owner absolutely nothing to gain from not servicing the vehicle properly. Some engine type with certain usage patterns might last for some time despite lax maintenance but I don't even see the point of comparing the durability of different engines without the assumption that all engines are first and foremost properly maintained.
Got the 2.0 EcoBoost in my car and I love it, three years going strong. These engines are meant to be driven and used, as long as you take care of them just like anything else.
I just bought a 2016 2.0 ecoboost with 60k km (35k miles) on the clock. Is there anything apart from regular oil changes I should be doing to keep it reliable? thanks.
@@nzmarco trans fluid, the 6F35 likes clean transmission oil. Should be done at 50k (km). Injector/carbon flush at 50k as well, if you have AWD get both diffs done too. Check online for service intervals, that may give a better idea. Direct injection has its own caveats, so the more you understand how DI works the easier it'll be to determine what type of service you need. I use strictly 91 octane, but 87 is fine as well. Enjoy the FuSE, its a great car!
what's in a name thanks for your response. I have been using a higher octane (95). Will do some research around scheduled servicing and check out the service records I have. How’s your average fuel consumption? I’m at 10.5/100 (metric sorry) while urban driving. Haven’t been on the open road yet. Cheers.
@@nzmarco on the highway 7.6L/100km, in the city about the same as you, 10.5L/100km. Winnipeg has a shitty layout so I end up idling more than driving, haha. I've gone from MB to BC and back twice in the last month and the car hasn't complained a bit, and I'm already at 100k kms. Built Ford Tough like they say.
what's in a name I hope so. There’s lots of info on gdi I wish I had of read before buying the car, which incidentally is called a Mondeo in New Zealand. I saw a CRC product on YT that apparently breaks down carbon on valves and the turbo. Might see if I can find it here.
Very well spoken and easy to listen to. Everything you say makes sense. I particularly agree with the synthetic oil especially in a highly strung engine. Nothing wrong with changing it before the recommended intervals either. I personally would not have one as they are a lot of tech for a relatively minor gain. The big old low stressed engines will tolerate lax oil changes and non optimals more than one of these and a lot cheaper to fix IMHO. Also less prone to throwing a fault code because a spark plug is not within spec. Having said that, I run a CRDI turbo diesel engine in our Sportage. 115k and no problems yet. Always get it serviced on time or a bit before.
Great video! I have an F150 3.5 EB built Jan. 21, 2011. 154,000 miles. I replaced my timing chain at 121,000 miles, and added a pneumatic pre-oiler with 1.5QT extra capacity. No pistons or other moving parts beyond an electric check valve to scrap metal shavings into my oil galley.. anyway also always synthetic oil and WIX or NAPA GOLD filters with good check valves. Now when I start up after sitting or cold, I KNOW I have full oil pressure with phasers at full PSI. Same setup that Jay Leno uses. My Ford dealership reviewed the entire install and said they would like to see me at 300,000 miles to see how I did. I do get into the turbos hard on occasion and have zero issues.
2014 f150 3.5 with 131000 miles No issues yet. What did it cost you for your timing chain replacement? Was wondering how pro active I should be. Was also wondering about having the valves walnut blasted. Cant find anyone that does that yet.
Fantastic video, great education - thank you. I run full-synthetic in my engine and swap oil/filter every 6,000 miles, I am currently at just a little over 90,000 miles and everything seems to be running good.

Love the advice on the turbo. Now I MUST run it hard to help my turbos stay in good mechanical condition! Which means my beer runs will be even quicker... Thanks for your tips. I run Amsoil and I've been changing it at 10K miles. I'll drop that down to 8K. My 2011 F-150 has 130K miles, runs good and has been reliable. I do keep up with maintenance and fluid changes. BTW, hate that camera and how it keeps trying to focus. It needs an oil change.

5.0L peak piston speed is 82.5mph, faster than a formula engine @17,000rpm formula engine use long rods, 5.0L uses short rods which pushes the cylinder against the sleeve at a high angle, causing it to accelerate the piston to faster than the crankshaft is moving. 5.0Lengine made by ford have sintered rods, too heavy for the bore spacing, 5.0L is the only muscle car balanced externally like muscle cars from the 80's. 5.0Lbuilt from catalog parts(BOSS engines) have drop forged and ball peen forged rods like stock V6 and V8 camaros so can rev higher a V8 camaro can add 100hp with just a camshaft made by chevy, 5.0L being so close to max volumetric efficiency, it is very hard to add HP without more RPM, or displacement per minute 5.0L is 20% smaller but only gets 3% better fuel economy driving slow, but uses a lot more fuel with a heavy foot, that's cause all of the power adders are adding wear, not just robbing fuel economy so 5.0L can displace more per minute at high RPM ford was forced to build 5.0L cause they were fine with 4.6L 300HP in 2009 but V6 camaro made 315hp in 2010.....300HP IN A MUSCLE CAR 12 years after Z28 Camaro made 345hp in 1998
@@231mac conrod means nothing, it's the stroke to rod ratio the lower the ratio, the steeper trajectory the steeper angle on the cylinder wall means it's being forced against the wall and that speeds up the piston a very long rod would still have that problem if the stroke is also long, you can't go lower than a 1.5 ratio because the rod would be too short for the crankshaft to turn google rod ratio to piston speed
I have a 2013 lariat ecoboost with almost 400'000 km and it still runs like a monster. Use proper oil (amsoil) and filter (oem ford oil filter) like he said, change oil at 5000km and youll be solid. If you wanna go a step further get an rx catch can. These engines last for those that take good care of em.
@Michael A-1 I have a 2013 Explorer Sport with the 3.5 ecoboost. Last Fall we started having issues with what Ford though was the cam phaser. I looked it up and found the timing chain stretch issue. Ford had the vehicle in 3 different times before they replaced the chain. 6 months later, the water pump went out and we caught it in time, but they repaired that also. We've had the electrical power steering go out in the cold as well, but that's just a random thing. Overall, like the engine, but transverse mounted in the explorer makes the chain/water pump more difficult to change out.
youre wasting money with scamsoil, or any synthetic, at that OCI. you might as well be using motorcraft oil and saving $10 a quart per change. unless you you change you oil at 10,000 mile intervals youre not even breaking even on cost, at 5000km a conventional oil oil would serve you just as good as a synthetic.
I have had 6 Gen 3.5 Ecoboost engines, NONE had any issues at all, Great little powerhouses. I am not on my 7th Ecoboost, the Gen 2 3.5 and it is hands down so much better than the Gen 1. Best engines in any pickup on the road in the half ton market.
@@waltbullet1287 So does the fuel system in the Diesels. Any little bit of water can cost $10k. Everything costs a bundle to repair these days, so take good care of them and that risk goes way down.

Probably the best information I've found on these engines. Well done! I've been torn between the 5.0 and an ecoboost. I feel more comfortable choosing a 3.5 now as long as I run a catch-can and change oil every 3,000 miles.
Just a heads up, Ford is working on another TSB for worn timing chain components (as of 12/20/2019) Should be released first quarter 2020. I am a 35 year Ford technician. Well done video with clear explanation for the general public.
If your not using the ford oil your doing it wrong.. there is a guy on amazon who paid for oil lab tests and showed that the motorcraft oil gave the best results for ford engines.. who would of thought ford oil would be more effective on ford engines than a universal off brand... ( This oil gave me the BEST Blackstone Lab reports on my Ford engine. Lowest parts per million on iron, aluminum & other important metals. I wish I had used this oil from the date I purchased the car. )
@R Mack You must have a low iq that wasnt the point at all... the point was about how their oil is best suited for ford engines and how a lot of people go off and use off brand shit that isnt as effective at protecting FORD specific parts
@R Mack Paid oil lab analysis are extremely accurate that is like saying a blood test to show certain level of vitamins are not accurate.. the lab tests shows various metals in the oil analysis trust me i used to pay for the off brand full synthetics ill never use anything but motorcraft from now on in my ford engines this is strictly for for engines im saying i believe ford uses special additives that are SPECIFICALLY formulated for better wear results than other universal oils and it makes perfect sense they know there engine best and what its made of specifically just like the cooling system... and why they stress to use motorcraft coolant it protects the cooling system the best from after market brands

Great video, you know what you are talking about!
first person i have seen accurately describe what causes chain stretch. impressive!
Uh, it’s just chain stretch.
Cars have had that problem for almost a hundred years.
Calling it stretching is a misnomer and is the problem people have. The chain does not stretch in the slightest, the pins and bushings wear out causing elongation, nothing more.
Moral of the story: If you’re buying an EcoBoost your not buying it for the Eco, your buying it for the Boost.
Understand ing is magnificent
I bought it for both. I have tons of torque for towing/hauling, and get 24-25mpg Highway on cruise control in a SuperCrew truck.

@RJ Least of These Farm Wow... my 07 supercrew 4x4 would get 18 on the highway....
I bought my 2022 F150 XLT 3.5 4x4 just a month ago and I absolutely love it. Runs like bullet, really smother when it comes to driving quality, and MPG is decent ( I get around 19.5~20). Probably Toyota fanboys.
Excellent Teaching ! You know your stuff and convey information without technical jargon. You will go far !
So basically change the oil more often and give it the Italian tune up once in awhile.
When I give my Mustang V-6 the good ole Italian tune-up, I smell napalm burning.
Yeah it's a problem alright: no cylinder deactivation, no plastic oil/transmission pans like the 5.0, 22 mpg city, 29 mpg highway. I can't wait for gas to go to $5 a gallon again.
Just what I was going to say.
Or just get a Toyota, change oil per owners manual and enjoy 400,000+ miles .
I normally have strong objections to cloning but you might be an exception. We need someone like you in every shop.
So to sum up: good oil and filter, change it often and do lots of Italian tune ups.
It's amazing how much an Italian tune-up will help many vehicles 😅

Ive had mine for five years. No issues at all with the engine. Only fear I have is IF and its a big IF, that if there is a mechanical failure the cost of a new engine used and new is 6k to 10K respectively

Wow, this guy is really good at explaining and speaking clearly!
Outstanding teaching by DG. Truly impressed by his knowledge, intelligence and articulation.
I bought me EcoBoost for the boost , 2.7 in a ford edge sport , I will just keep it serviced and keep the boost level up . Thanks for the info .

When you made the dog noise, my dog heard it and started woofing ;)

I love this guy.his explanation and delivery is one of the best on the web✊🏾
Case in point...Nearly every automaker that uses the ZF 8HP transmission says it’s “fill for life” while ZF explicitly recommends changing the fluid at 8yr/100000km.
simple solution = TOYOTA/LEXUS best qualty cars and engines ever made
In the last 100 years or so, what car/engine hasn't begun to fail without proper maintenance? Sloppy maintenance (especially of the engine) is like giving bad luck a disproportionate chance to wreck things while giving the owner absolutely nothing to gain from not servicing the vehicle properly. Some engine type with certain usage patterns might last for some time despite lax maintenance but I don't even see the point of comparing the durability of different engines without the assumption that all engines are first and foremost properly maintained.
KIRK S eh, not really. I mean, yeah they’re good, but they’re all good these days.
It's a good thing people don't do the recommended maintenance, I mean how much business would be lost if everyone maintained their vehicle to spec.
We need more tech like this. I would never have a problem paying someone like that to work on my truck .
You sir are very impressive. Thank You!!
Holy moly your the mechanic jedi! Your super knowledgeable on this stuff. Thank you. I'm so impressed!👏

Will do some research around scheduled servicing and check out the service records I have. what's in a name I hope so. There’s lots of info on gdi I wish I had of read before buying the car, which incidentally is called a Mondeo in New Zealand. I saw a CRC product on YT that apparently breaks down carbon on valves and the turbo. Might see if I can find it here.
Great video for people wanting to know more about the ins and outs of the ecoboost motor.
Very well spoken. I watch a a lot of video's and maybe 5% are done as well as this guy
I run full-synthetic in my engine and swap oil/filter every 6,000 miles, I am currently at just a little over 90,000 miles and everything seems to be running good.
what brand do you consider good quality full syn oil & filter
@@Tom-ic7hw.. Pennzoil ultra platinum and fram ultra synthetic
Holy hell this was so helpful. Somebody please give my man a raise.
Great video, well said, no aggravating music, and no BS. Thanks for sharing

Amazing video! This is my first time here - this guy needs his own channel!
Drop that down to 3k-5k
Hello. 2 March 2022. I have owned 2 F150 crew cab 4x4 with the EcoBoost engines. The first was the 2.7 then the 3.5. Absolutely amazing. We follow the recommended maintenance schedule and they have been faultless and unbelievable on gas.
Thanks for the feedback! 👍👌
What about the 1.0L w turbo 3 cylinder w the manual transmission? Love this car, just wish we could get a 2 door here in America. Don't need 4 doors I need extra leg room
@grumpy old fart I've thought about it but I'm not Shaq tall. I'm tall but not that tall. Besides that unless you sit behind the passenger seat. No way you're sitting behind me. I've got the seat back as far she'll go. Need about 2 more inches. Smh story of my life, and what my ex said ;-)
I wish you lived in my neighborhood. How about doing a video on the pros and cons of the 5.0 V8 in the Ford 150.
That be nice...
5.0L peak piston speed is 82.5mph, faster than a formula engine @17,000rpm
formula engine use long rods, 5.0L uses short rods which pushes the cylinder against the sleeve at a high angle, causing it to accelerate the piston to faster than the crankshaft is moving.
5.0Lengine made by ford have sintered rods, too heavy for the bore spacing, 5.0L is the only muscle car balanced externally like muscle cars from the 80's.
5.0Lbuilt from catalog parts(BOSS engines) have drop forged and ball peen forged rods like stock V6 and V8 camaros so can rev higher
a V8 camaro can add 100hp with just a camshaft made by chevy, 5.0L being so close to max volumetric efficiency, it is very hard to add HP without more RPM, or displacement per minute
5.0L is 20% smaller but only gets 3% better fuel economy driving slow, but uses a lot more fuel with a heavy foot, that's cause all of the power adders are adding wear, not just robbing fuel economy so 5.0L can displace more per minute at high RPM
ford was forced to build 5.0L cause they were fine with 4.6L 300HP in 2009 but V6 camaro made 315hp in 2010.....300HP IN A MUSCLE CAR 12 years after Z28 Camaro made 345hp in 1998
@@ihatecrackhead What?? The Coyote 5.0 uses a 5.933 con rod. That's _not_ 'short', lol. And please provide the link to this piston speed info.
@@231mac
conrod means nothing, it's the stroke to rod ratio
the lower the ratio, the steeper trajectory
the steeper angle on the cylinder wall means it's being forced against the wall and that speeds up the piston
a very long rod would still have that problem if the stroke is also long, you can't go lower than a 1.5 ratio because the rod would be too short for the crankshaft to turn
google rod ratio to piston speed
I could listen to him all day. Very informative.
marry him already
I have a 2013 lariat ecoboost with almost 400'000 km and it still runs like a monster. Use proper oil (amsoil) and filter (oem ford oil filter) like he said, change oil at 5000km and youll be solid. If you wanna go a step further get an rx catch can. These engines last for those that take good care of em.
jumpship88 when one ecoboost can reach a 500,000 trouble free miles without serious costs, then I’ll check the difference in gas savings vs repairs.
I know of 2 people with failed cam shafts. Another issue...cam phasers
youre wasting money with scamsoil, or any synthetic, at that OCI. you might as well be using motorcraft oil and saving $10 a quart per change. unless you you change you oil at 10,000 mile intervals youre not even breaking even on cost, at 5000km a conventional oil oil would serve you just as good as a synthetic.
Michael A-1
Why keep trading them in if no problems? Burning money with the depreciation...
All I know is when it fails it will cost a bundle to fix!!
@@waltbullet1287 So does the fuel system in the Diesels. Any little bit of water can cost $10k. Everything costs a bundle to repair these days, so take good care of them and that risk goes way down.
Excellent job on this video. Very visual and informative. I have a '15 3.5 EB. I'm at 81k miles now and I change my oil every 5k miles and have since day one. I hope to have this truck for a long time.

Probably the best information I've found on these engines. Well done! I've been torn between the 5.0 and an ecoboost. I feel more comfortable choosing a 3.5 now as long as I run a catch-can and change oil every 3,000 miles.
A 3000 and 5000 mile cycle is a great way to keep oil fresh.
No need for a catch can since the new eb has direct and Port injection.
2017+ you don’t need catch can.
Dustin Golley, you did a great job explaining this. I enjoyed it and learned quite a few new things for my new truck. Thanks for the help!
Arguably the best video I have ever seen on a mechanical topic. I wish his shop was near me.
Just a heads up, Ford is working on another TSB for worn timing chain components (as of 12/20/2019) Should be released first quarter 2020. I am a 35 year Ford technician. Well done video with clear explanation for the general public.
Can you add the second tensioner to the pre 2018 EcoBoost motors?
@@StormxRaiden There is nothing available that I am aware of.
@D man Technical Service Bulletin
😏😏 that's my face when I hear I have to boost it every once in a while 😃 lol! 2.7 2018 stx here. 13k miles and love the boost. 👍
Imagine if you had the 3.5
@Jess W From what, exactly??
great point on the turbo charger no being used enough! If I use the truck just for daily use and never tow, maybe it's not for me.
This helps me. I always have used Mobil 1, Motorcraft oil filters, change oil, filter every 5 k miles. Just need to open her up a bit more...
@R Mack Haha
This was super helpful. I have been concerned about these engines as I have been truck shopping. Thank you!
