Once, at Philmont...
The supper crew didn't want to wash more than one pot so our scoutmaster said "just cook it in one pot". So they did... they dumped every serving in one pot and cooked it together. I still have no idea what all went into that but it was all we had to eat that night.
RC Gusto - I was in Cub Scouts(Pack 815) and Boy Scouts (Troop 750) and have been to Philmont, Chisolm Trail, and many many others. While I may have not enjoyed the entirety of my scouting experience when I was in it, when I look back I kick myself that I didn't give it my all to make Eagle (Only made it to 2nd Class). I have a huge respect for any and all Eagle Scouts and continue to donate to my former Pack and Troop. Thank you for doing this video, it really brought me back to my time at Philmont around a decade ago.
Bruce Lane I'm glad it brought back some good memories. We were hoping to reach a good number of the scouting community with this video. I was never in scouts as a kid--Evan (my friend in this video) was very involved and holds a tremendous amount of pride in his experience.
Thanks so much for the opportunity to be a part of this, Gusto. This was a blast to do.
Safety Optional absolutely! This was a great day. Great opportunity to collaborate!
Holy shit I went hiking/camping at Philmont when I was 15 years old
Portal2master my buddy Evan from safety optional did as well. I was never a Scout, unfortunately
Man, things have sure improved at Philmont since i made the trip in 1962. We had a big crate of K rations that was at every stop. We just got one each handed out by the guy in charge. Some of them were from 1942. About half were edible so we tried to get two in hopes of having one decent meal. The people in charge acted like we should be grateful we got anything and didn't have to eat tree bark.
I went there in 2001 what a great place I timed out at 18 and was a life scout still till this day get bummed I didn't make eagle but still the best memory's as a kid going to camp in the summer thanks for all the great videos
Just finished a training exercise there in September. Leading a crew of 8 in August 18. The place is utterly amazing!
No Coffee. I’m glad that we carried our own. Plus cigars for our advisor
You fellas are awesome. Enjoy watching you both work together
I appreciate how Philmont Scout Ranch has gone to using a variety of commercially available products to make their MRE's. This is something people can do on their own, with a little time spent looking for products on the grocery store shelves.
Kevin Baker absolutely right. The stroganoff is easily available at most sporting goods stores. Thanks!
Always can count on a solid review RC.
Outstanding....
richfrid thank you!
Dang, when we backpacked Philmont in the 1970-1980s, we freeze-dreid our own hamburger, and made due with Hamburger Helper brand meals, hard cheese, jerky, "gorp", Quaker Oast instant oat meal, and Sierra Cups (as we called them back then - stainless steal cups) mess kits...occasionally, we had Mountain House, but dang, they were spendy back then.
You actually brought the skull camping 😂
texasdee slinglead heck yeah, but I forgot the spoon
:)
Another great video. Never was at Philmont but did a lot of camping with the scouts at area Scout camps. Which we would have had these meals when we hiked all day. Way to go Gusto!
Great video! Brings back memories from my own Philmont experience in 2006
Brett Hudson I'm really glad we had the opportunity to review this. Thanks for watching
Heading to Philmont next year. Thanks for the review so we (my son and I) can see a little more for what to expect
I enjoyed the “on location” concept. Keep up the great videos! I think that cow in the background wanted to eat some of your oats during the breakfast portion 😂
johnny3514 I liked that part too! Thanks for watching
Definitely!
Me to however the fact two men walking around with a skull. Might have worried some people 😁.
John Leightell it was protectively packed in my camera bag. It was all on private land, so no biggie
Oh I know it was just funny 😁
I had no clue they existed! Thanks for the introduction.
Great to be outside for a change.
More please.
Admiral Preparedness will do. I loved this location
This was awesome, thanks for the review and I haven't seen anything like this before either.
Kahlest Enoch we were hoping to draw some interest from the scouting population
Great out door video. Awesome review as always. Makes me want to go rough it out in the woods for the weekend.
chad deans I love the outdoor setting
Great video. Brings back memories. At the end of a long day hiking, that Stroganoff used to taste fantastic.
Scott3k9b my favorite freeze dried meal
I haven't had it in a long time, but that was my favorite one back in the Scouts. I will have to try it and some other freeze dried meals on my next outing.
Looks like y'all had fun great look gusto thanks
Zachary Moore we had a great time. Thanks for watching!
I'm a eagle scout from 1988. Never heard of the place your talking about and they didn't have these when I was in the scouts. We had to go to the store for can and dry goods. Or we found something to eat out their. If they make these now a day's then the scouts would be easy.
Looks like a common old fashioned iced tea spoon. I bought six of them at a thrift shop for 15 cents each. Great for mountain house pouches
Maaaan! When I went to Philmont in 1992 we got "Spreadables", which was some kind of canned meat salad, or tuna fish, which I HATE and some sort of hard bread, but not usually crackers. Lunches quickly became known by our patrol as "Dreadables" because we knew it was going to be the same crap! I remembered getting some MRE chocolate toffee bars, which were a welcome sight for me, having grown up on MREs. Mostly, meals at night were okay as best as I can remember.
hrdknox2000 Evan really wanted to get some spreadables, but was unable to find them.
I love Nature's Choice fig bars. You can get them at many grocery stores, and they're popping up in some convenience stores as well (where I live, both Wawa and Racetrac have them).
I'm an Eagle Scout also. I like your videos even more now
Trevor Lomprey I am not and Eagle Scout--my friend (collaborating on this video) is and Eagle Scout and scout master.
RC Gusto I thought YOU said your a cub scout leader and an Eagle Scout
Trevor Lomprey sorry--that was Evan. We were both speaking
Great review guys really enjoyed it. Got to go and check out safetys also:)
sharon maurer thank you!
I am also a eagle scout and im a order of arrow and i like your reviews.
Thank you great review
awesome location shot! those meals look great!
Animal-Free MRE thank you! Glad you enjoyed
Philmont is an amazing place. I went in 1991.
The meal system at philmont works very well. The meals are all very hardy and at the end of a long day of hiking (especially 12+ miles) the meals are phenomenal. I especially like how quick and easy the lunch and breakfast meals are since most mornings you need to get up early and pack up camp. And at lunch time you are eating on the trail. It is quick simple food you can snack on. God I miss it. They were right when they said people always want to go back to philmont
Gusto i really like this you should make more outdoor stuff damn this is relaxing to watch and that cow too
I go to philmont in a few months. Thanks for the review of the food
Matthew Petzoldt I liked it! Good trail food
Very different from 1970. Both were excellent.
neat find, looked very good
Kaylynn Strain it was really fun to review. The stroganoff was fantastic. Highly recommended
We ate off of Frisbee's at Philmont. Also, I remember fondly the trade boxes. Leave something you don't like and swap for something you do like.
STARSaIphaTeam Evan talked about the plastic bowls--I wish we had one for this review
Frisbees are perfect for backpacking. They are lightweight and they don't pass the heat onto your hand from hot food like metal plates do. I guess you could play with them too. lol
Adding grass makes MRE's edible.
We ate off a frisbe light weight and fun after a meal. We had a fruit bar in our packs that were awful and we sacrifice it at the closing campfire. 1986 and 1988
Love the long handles spoons. I have an el cheapo titanium one , and that thing is a life saver. Or rather it keeps me from going insane . 😄
texasdee slinglead I really like this spoon. Rigid and long reach.
This is great content RC 👍😄✌👍🔥
Boa Boy thank you!
RC Gusto 🔥😄🔥
Actually looked really good nice snacking meals to keep you going. Nothing to bulky or heavy to weigh you down.
John Leightell exactly. I forgot to mention the weight of these, but they were very light
Gerald R Ford was chief of the Eagle Scouts before becoming President, in person apparently a great guy and very down to earth. It's clever the design of these rations, tailored toward teenagers, no coffee for example but most things can be eaten RIGHT NOW.
Karl P very good rations for continued movement
I went to Philmont. Great in '98. 813J IWTGBTP!
Loved this! Did they get rid of the Libby's Spreadables for lunch? If so....thank God! That stuff was awful back in 1992!
“But this is a strawberry filling.”
“Don’t you mean…fig filling?”
“Strawberry flavored fig filling.”
My favorite exchange of the video.
This was helpful im going this summer with my troop i cant waut
Beef stroganoff was my fav meal at philmont besides jambalaya and biscuits in gravy
Yum!
stinger is an amazing product
mike bayley I’m a big fan
I must like kid food because all that stuff looked pretty good to me. Like stuff I'd pick to eat as snacks on a regular basis. Cool stuff man.
+RC Gusto Great to see you back in action. It was a different review but it was a nice one although i prefer mre reviews. Especially that vintage stuff.
golemcone oooh...then you'll love what I have coming up. I have a series of old Canadian rations dating back as far as WWII
RC Gusto wow, back to WW2, sounds awesome. I'm already excited for that.
golemcone if all goes right, it will be out tomorrow
Nice 👍🏻
Craig Cottingham thanks!
Miss ya
Reddeng 25 oh, I'm still here. I am shooting a bunch of vids this week. I had a bunch of computer issues that prevented editing for the past couple weeks. All up and running again
Eagle scouts are becoming quite a rarity now adays. I just got my eagle in may. One thing ive been regretting is turning down philmont. Thankfully i got to visit the summit but thats the only high adventure base i was able to go to
When he dumped the Gatorade in the nalgene I was like noooooooo
Lol I hate putting my bottles in bear bags
@@samwilliams874 ya i just never used the drink mixes until the last day of my trek lol
And it's 2 thumbs up from me ,,,,! !,,,, Lin-Lee ♡♡ you're channel x
Lin- Lee thanks!
I am an Eagle Scout also in 96
chris negus my buddy Evan was able to get this from Philmont--used the scout leader connection
Philmont is THE SHIT.
Do a cajun navy mre
Great review except where's the link to drew78 for the mega reach spoon ?
Wayne D rations and more link in description
RC Gusto I didn't find it there in descriptions & links that why i ask
Wayne D stores.ebay.com/rationsandmore
RC Gusto thanks ..he doesnt have them listed
Moooooooo!
Axel Mutis the cows were loud that morning. I loved it
Does anybody know where people who aren't involved with scouts can buy these? Looks like a solid "grey man" option.
John S I'll stick a link in the doobly-doo
Thanks. You're awesome, man. Keep doing what you do.
That mooing cow is cracking me up!
yum except the sausages.
I was a scout for 4 years. Many memories and lots of fun. Too bad that the team slowly turned to shit due to chiefs constantly changing , not many kids turning up for the activities and some douchebags having the upper hand within the team.
So basically with the exception of the Mountain House stuff it was all gas station food. Wow.
Mike Moore essentially yes. Lightweight snacks all day followed by a heavy dinner.
Mike Moore some of the stuff in it is too expensive individually to be found in a gas station.
77% organic on the Stinker Bars? It's either organic or it isn't...
That acli-mate was the grossest drink I have ever had. Tasted like cherry medicine
After eating beef jerky and granola protein bars for a couple days would definently want some not dehydrated / freeze dried food. Bet its heck on your guts!
Can you post a link to buy them
chris negus I'll get you a link
chris negus www.philmontscoutranch.org/~/link.aspx?_id=D5BEC69924704397B0C27E881D87CB69&_z=z
RC Gusto thank you
chris negus no problem
.
OMG...that's sooo much food...(and I know it's for two people), guess the second person is going to eat more w me as their partner...lol
Heard a cow mooing in the background 🐮🐄
ladybassplayer23 I left the cow sounds on purpose. I liked that part
It's sad that's it's no longer boy scouts 😔
Mel Negri no kidding. I’m not a fan of that decision
Let me guess none of you picked up your brass after firing your weapons...
Unfitproduct Airborne you’d be incorrect. We always pick up brass
I bet Philmont is wishing they had the massive flood that happened a couple years ago
I was there when the flood happened
No squeeze cheese?
Jalepino was my fave
I see your friend came along but where's his spoon? Poor guy can't eat without his spoon. Hehehe...
A far cry from spreadables and Pemican bars on the lunch menu from back in the day
That kinda snack and very salty food may not be so agreeable after a few days
Were you the little chubby lad in the picture?
エステティック Funk I was not an Eagle Scout. My friend Safety Optional is the guy with red hair who gets centered as the photo zooms
RC Gusto Ahh, my mistake. I took the zoom in a little to far to the left. I love the on location video this time around. I can only imagine you carrying both the skull and tray in your hiking pack.
So much for traveling light.
A former Eagle Scout claiming to have no way to heat something while outdoors???? ;-)
roguesquatcher I'm not an Eagle Scout...Evan is. But I knew that comment would happen. I should clarify that we had no convenient means of heating it. Building an open fire at that location would have been frowned upon. Could we do it? Absolutely.
roguesquatcher roasted
So, who else is eating lunch right now?
Christopher Maillet every time I click to reply, it opens to the stroganoff--that stuff was awesome...making me hungry too
Using Edge Browser?
Christopher Maillet I'm currently on mobile, so I have to open the YT app to reply.
Oh, yeah, the YT app is garbage.
At 12:16 NEVER EVER do that at Philmont like seriously bears will eat your Nalgene and if you have a Silo good luck putting that in your bear canister
SGT Joker ???
Dang that drink was nasty
As a germophobe i cringed as you handeled each others food with bare hands
klown mittenz we’ve been through a lot together over the years.
Lol. I went through a lot with my old spotter. Still wouldn't let him touch my food.
Really some sucky combinations.. Rather have a Polish MRE. A twenty two minute commercial.
