Brains used to be a fairly common food in the US. I collect old railroad dining car menus. Right from the beginning of the 20th century up though the early 50's, brains and scrambled eggs were on almost every breakfast menu. Calves brains were more common than pork, but pork brains were more popular in the South. Tongue and sweetbreads were also on every menu, with tongue being a typical sandwich meat and sauteed shortbreads being a dinner type item. I'm assuming that increasing prosperity turned us against organ meats and onto things like roast beef, chicken and turkey. It's hard to imagine any US food that would feature brains or tongue as a prominent ingredient in food today. And where's the Boss? I miss her reviews.
Sar Jim that's a good historical reference. You can still buy canned pork brains in milk. Old world food! Still not uncommon in some places. As for the boss, I've seen Kiwidude putting out more videos recently! Hopefully there will be a resurgence!

You must be talking about the Rose brand pork brains in milk gravy. It's right on the shelf next to the pickled pig's feet. There are times I feel more kinship with Russian food than American food. Even the instant soup looks tastier and more filling that what we usually get, especially the few soups that show up in an MRE.

And living in the Old South, chitterlings (chitlins) are still widely available. Still, I would give my left breast for a serving of chinchulines...cow's small intestine still stuffed with whatever grass it ate last, grilled over a wood fire. A quick dip in chimichurri, and it's heaven on a plate.
I've had chunchullo in Columbia. I think it's all in the same family, although the ones I had were well washed out. I don't know if the grass from bossie's gut would be too attractive, at least not for me. The ones I had were the same as most Colombian sausage but with the different casing. Chitterlings are still widely available here. I don't mind the final result, but you really have to cook them outside. The stench until they are thoroughly cooked is really nauseating and will linger for days in the kitchen.
In England and Ireland steak and kidney is common pie filling and gorgeous. Also liver is common and I love it, cooked properly its great. Brains is something I've only done as pate, some shit gave us jellied brains when I was a kid made me gag, tasted like pickled arse, pate or some unknown part of a paste is fine by me though. Amazing review!!! You do such a great job presenting and describing things. As well, you must be in the medical field. Your immediate mention of prions, specifically. Few people would know about that. I will also say that the Russian Military rations are by far the highest calorie and the highest quality of any ration I have seen. I think you would be hard pressed to find anyone that would turn their nose up at these meals if they were plated up and presented to them formally. Gulasz, pate, vegetable soup, etc. Sign me up!!! :-D

You have a way w words. I used to watch quite a bit of cooking shows and the best ones used very descriptive words to get you to almost taste and feel what they are experiencing. Rocky Raab but it really seems that regular Russian IRPs using a boatload of sugar to ramp up the calories on the box. Kinda cheap and not too good. But then I kinda remember something about fast carbs from the sugar?
I am curious when you do a 24 hour ration pack like this.. I am sure that you eat it as intended... spaced out over the course of a day? Otherwise you'd be extremely full by the end of the taping of this video... The Buckwheat porridge has got my eye.. I have seen it reviewed in a number of Russian MRE or field rations... It looks very appetizing and is on my bucket list to try... if you ever have a left over packet or contain that you'd like to share.. I'd be grateful..
Soo Much food. Wowza. I am always impressed by russian/French and italian MRE's. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Watched one late last night, All I remember was it ha weird tasting tuna can, chicken and rice and beans. And the reviewer ended up putting the honey into the Chicken rice too. It also had One tea bag and sugar. and a Jam. Ate the Jam with the spoon, No biscuits, or anything. Was really only one meal but was supposed to be a 24 hr ration. ☠☠☠☠☠
ComeAtMeKitty I film throughout the day, eat as I film, tasting on camera, eat more off camera. I didn't eat the ground sausage...didn't really care for it. The kasha and soup were my lunch, goulash was my dinner that day. I try to not waste food. I usually don't care for it much...but my pets love it
Very good review ! I'm impressed with the excellent cut and compactness of the film. The ration looks good, however these instant kasha seems to be a bit worse (but much lighter) than the can version. There are a few snacks, but maybe you don't really need it that much?
Delicious yes, the instant kasha was just a sticky paste, and very bland. Not really appealing to me. Tons of energy in the mains alone, so not a lot of snacks
This is best menu, my favorite. Glad you like. Russian MRE have simple maybe component, but very good for high energy. Lot of food keeps morale up good. Sorry for poor English. Just comment on fat, fat is very essential food component in cold climate, need high fat.
Well I'm on first minute of this video... Both FROG rations are FSB there are no true or authentic FSB ration nowhere except for MREinfo, what seems to be only place making this difference, not all but from some members. Also FSB is not only Russian Agency that has Spetznaz units and they are mostly counter terrorist units, undercover operations, sabotage, hostage crisis etc not mountain warfare. Only in some ocasions mountain related operations of FSB where/is Chechenya. MVD has Spetznaz units and MVD have their own rations, EMERCOM even has special purpose unit and EMERCOM have different rations. Can you give me some sources for your informations about this? Because if you are right about this being onyl true/authentic FSB ration and FSB having Mountain ration for Spetznaz units that are mostly for urban warfare all my friends in Russia are liars, including guys in Moscow I went to school with. Sorry for poor English but I'm really looking forward to get some explanation about this new informations and explanations from you. Crombat Rations these have flooded the eBay market recently, with contents not matching the content sticker descriptions. They are being listed as "mountain rations" but upon opening, do not contain the higher calorie content and FRH specific to the mountain ration. They instead contain contents very similar to the standard IRP. They are being sold with misleading details. That was my point in the description.
If It's not problem if you have links in Russian telling what's inside montain rations please provide them. That NathanMRE guy did FSB ration review and his is called *ultra rare* mountain FSB, but no FHR also. You call this revieved one True FSB Ration, well I had FSB ration variant 3 with paper on top saying whats inside and how many calories, nothing misleading about it, but it seems you are saying I had prepackaged IRP. And what standard IRP did they prepackaged in your opinion? How do you know what's specific for Russian mountain ration? And source saying it's Spetznaz FSB mountain ration and that version of mine or Nathan's are prepackaged canned not FSB ration.
Crombat Rations what I'm saying is that several of us, myself included, have recently been burned with inaccurately listed items from eBay. The mountain FSB should be listed as Menu 1 or 2, have retort pouches instead of cans or foil pans, a FRH, 5 chocolate bars, dehydrated/freeze dried items, and over 5000kcal. The problem also is that the FSB that is not designated for mountain/arctic conditions is very often being labeled as a mountain ration on eBay and other ration sources. My point here is that purchasers need to be wary of the term "mountain ration". Just because it is in this style packaging doesn't necessarily mean that's what you are getting. My apologies for using the terms "FSB" and "mountain ration" interchangeably. This is a mistake and makes my statement misleading. Still, there are opportunist sellers with a very large presence on eBay right now and the listings are very commonly inaccurate. So that's one problem. The more glaring issue is this: Two weeks ago, I received what I thought was another one of these that turned out to be a dressed up (must likely) civilian ration stuffed into one of these containers. Contents did not match the label, and were commercially appearing items. That's the kind of stuff I'm talking about.
You can combine it with the matches and your standard issue spetsnaz ballistic knife to create an armour piercing incendiary anti-tank bullet. no joke.

Bobby Bobenation Ebay, i get mine from a seller named One1, they're legit military spec mre's for around $130 shipped, you get two cases (A & B menu) with 12 mre's in each case. Unless you're just wanting to buy a few, just be careful not to get the mre star as it's a civilian version & doesn't contain as many items as military spec. Oh and if you buy just one case go for the A menu it has the better meals, the B menu has a few vegetarian meals. lol
Bobby Bobenation if you want true military MREs, I agree with the comment above by Mitchell. If you are open to civilian MREs, XMRE uses military components in a civilian pack. Benefit to those is that they are the freshest components you can get. True military MREs are usually a couple years old when they become available to civilians.
That looked like a nice ration and didn't seem as greasy and fatty as the Emercom IRP I recently had. Would you say these entrees are more "normal" or are they still the same Russian style fat saturated entrees as in the soft cans?

Creamy, Silky... Depends on what Is Made of, if its liver it may have a stronger meaty flavour, if it is just meat then the flavour Is milder. You can spread it on bread, crackers, etc. It is kind of a SPAM but silkier ...

D2ezbmu not really, unless I don't like it. These 24hr meals usually end up being my food for the day. For instance, the rice porridge and fruit bar were my breakfast for the day, some of the kasha for lunch with about half of the soup. That stuff was filling. Ate about half of the goulash. Kept the rest of the chocolate. Devoured that apple spread. I try not to waste food. Sometimes, there are things I just don't like. Pate, for instance...I just can't eat a lot of it. I'm ok with a taste. Usually end up feeding it to my dog or cat. They love that stuff.
Godviper White yeah it is. Especially with this being a mountain ration it has to have more calories and fat to keep you alive and kicking in an environment even more generally inhospitable than the rest of Russia
Five of those chocolate bars though... I wonder if they just managed to cram an extra 1000kcal in there by throwing in a bunch of those and the chocolate paste thing.
I’d mix both the pate together put the cheese on the crackers, then the mixed pate and top with apple butter, make the flavour and food energy go the farthest make it seem like you had 1 extra meal instead of over eating twice
the FSB if i remember is predominantly for special forces aka spetznaz. Therefore i think the green thing you use to open packages is for stabbing the enemy in the jugular, not a tearing aid :p
Honestly I would ask Steve - he seems like he has a perfect setup. I also noticed some scan lines interpolating on your video. Only reason I mention it is, stupid shit like this can actually limit your channel growth, 99% of people will immediately stop viewing if they see anything distracting. Just my 2 cents.
Karen Ketchum some of it...I kept all the chocolate, ate some of the kasha (that stuff is filling!), about half of the goulash. Ate all of the apple jelly. I'm not a huge fan of the sausage stuff...it's just a really strong salty flavor. That rice porridge was my breakfast that day. I try not to waste much...these 24 hr rations end up being all of my meals for the day
Russian soldiers do not eat these rations often, even when deployed abroad like in Syria. They mostly eat from field kitchens and mobile bakeries, so they are fed fresh pea soup, bread, potatoes, porridge, stews and so on. Plus, the rations are not supposed to be eaten for more than 3 days straight, even though it is definitely quite nutritious and it comes with a multi-vitamin supplement.
deep fried brain sandwiches are a delicacy of Southern Indiana it was originally cow brain but then the whole mad cow thing happened so not it's pig brains

Karl P this was a big ration, for sure. Almost as calorie dense as the Dutch arctic. Just a little over 5100Cal, which is about double what the average male needs on an everyday basis. Certainly energy requirements are higher in combat situations. 3 MREs are about 3500 Cal. Cold weather requires a lot more just to maintain body temperature.
Clinton Biggs luckily true fakes aren't that common. I got burned with a fake, but watch out for rations listed as mountain rations, but are not. True mountain rations will have about 5000kcal, be Menu 1 or 2, be composed of retort pouches rather than cans, have a flameless ration heater.
The "regular" FSB is 3,500 calories and has 1,2,3 menu. the "real mountain ration" FSB has 5,000+ calories and menu 1 and 2. That's how you can tell the difference. mattbluesmantastic your risk is exceedingly low. There have only been 150 cases of CJD worldwide attributed to brains in the food supply. That's outside of the cases attributed to tribal cannibalism. Stricter food regulations have essentially shut it down

the green tool can be used to open the stuff and if needed to hunt or defense be made into a spear.
All that seems a tad redundant for a soldier who unquestionably also has a combat knife.

ComeAtMeKitty I film throughout the day, eat as I film, tasting on camera, eat more off camera. I didn't eat the ground sausage...didn't really care for it. The kasha and soup were my lunch, goulash was my dinner that day. I try to not waste food. I usually don't care for it much...but my pets love it
just a tip with powdered drink mixes, use room temperature to slightly warm water with them, it will dissolve better

Very good review ! I'm impressed with the excellent cut and compactness of the film. The ration looks good, however these instant kasha seems to be a bit worse (but much lighter) than the can version. There are a few snacks, but maybe you don't really need it that much?
Delicious yes, the instant kasha was just a sticky paste, and very bland. Not really appealing to me. Tons of energy in the mains alone, so not a lot of snacks

Well I'm on first minute of this video... Both FROG rations are FSB there are no true or authentic FSB ration nowhere except for MREinfo, what seems to be only place making this difference, not all but from some members. Also FSB is not only Russian Agency that has Spetznaz units and they are mostly counter terrorist units, undercover operations, sabotage, hostage crisis etc not mountain warfare. Only in some ocasions mountain related operations of FSB where/is Chechenya. MVD has Spetznaz units and MVD have their own rations, EMERCOM even has special purpose unit and EMERCOM have different rations.
Can you give me some sources for your informations about this? Because if you are right about this being onyl true/authentic FSB ration and FSB having Mountain ration for Spetznaz units that are mostly for urban warfare all my friends in Russia are liars, including guys in Moscow I went to school with. Sorry for poor English but I'm really looking forward to get some explanation about this new informations and explanations from you. Crombat Rations these have flooded the eBay market recently, with contents not matching the content sticker descriptions. They are being listed as "mountain rations" but upon opening, do not contain the higher calorie content and FRH specific to the mountain ration. They instead contain contents very similar to the standard IRP. They are being sold with misleading details. That was my point in the description.
If It's not problem if you have links in Russian telling what's inside montain rations please provide them.
That NathanMRE guy did FSB ration review and his is called *ultra rare* mountain FSB, but no FHR also. You call this revieved one True FSB Ration, well I had FSB ration variant 3 with paper on top saying whats inside and how many calories, nothing misleading about it, but it seems you are saying I had prepackaged IRP. And what standard IRP did they prepackaged in your opinion? How do you know what's specific for Russian mountain ration? And source saying it's Spetznaz FSB mountain ration and that version of mine or Nathan's are prepackaged canned not FSB ration.
Crombat Rations what I'm saying is that several of us, myself included, have recently been burned with inaccurately listed items from eBay. The mountain FSB should be listed as Menu 1 or 2, have retort pouches instead of cans or foil pans, a FRH, 5 chocolate bars, dehydrated/freeze dried items, and over 5000kcal. The problem also is that the FSB that is not designated for mountain/arctic conditions is very often being labeled as a mountain ration on eBay and other ration sources. My point here is that purchasers need to be wary of the term "mountain ration". Just because it is in this style packaging doesn't necessarily mean that's what you are getting. My apologies for using the terms "FSB" and "mountain ration" interchangeably. This is a mistake and makes my statement misleading. Still, there are opportunist sellers with a very large presence on eBay right now and the listings are very commonly inaccurate. So that's one problem. The more glaring issue is this: Two weeks ago, I received what I thought was another one of these that turned out to be a dressed up (must likely) civilian ration stuffed into one of these containers. Contents did not match the label, and were commercially appearing items. That's the kind of stuff I'm talking about.

Bobby Bobenation Ebay, i get mine from a seller named One1, they're legit military spec mre's for around $130 shipped, you get two cases (A & B menu) with 12 mre's in each case.
Unless you're just wanting to buy a few, just be careful not to get the mre star as it's a civilian version & doesn't contain as many items as military spec.
Oh and if you buy just one case go for the A menu it has the better meals, the B menu has a few vegetarian meals. lol
Bobby Bobenation if you want true military MREs, I agree with the comment above by Mitchell. If you are open to civilian MREs, XMRE uses military components in a civilian pack. Benefit to those is that they are the freshest components you can get. True military MREs are usually a couple years old when they become available to civilians.
That looked like a nice ration and didn't seem as greasy and fatty as the Emercom IRP I recently had. Would you say these entrees are more "normal" or are they still the same Russian style fat saturated entrees as in the soft cans?

Creamy, Silky... Depends on what Is Made of, if its liver it may have a stronger meaty flavour, if it is just meat then the flavour Is milder. You can spread it on bread, crackers, etc. It is kind of a SPAM but silkier ...

D2ezbmu not really, unless I don't like it. These 24hr meals usually end up being my food for the day. For instance, the rice porridge and fruit bar were my breakfast for the day, some of the kasha for lunch with about half of the soup. That stuff was filling. Ate about half of the goulash. Kept the rest of the chocolate. Devoured that apple spread. I try not to waste food. Sometimes, there are things I just don't like. Pate, for instance...I just can't eat a lot of it. I'm ok with a taste. Usually end up feeding it to my dog or cat. They love that stuff.
Would love to try one of these rations but unlike other rations, they are a bit out of the budget

I’d mix both the pate together put the cheese on the crackers, then the mixed pate and top with apple butter, make the flavour and food energy go the farthest make it seem like you had 1 extra meal instead of over eating twice

This isn't suprising that russian rations are classy. Tried them myself. I guess Putin wants soldiers happy and well-fed.
Russian soldiers do not eat these rations often, even when deployed abroad like in Syria. They mostly eat from field kitchens and mobile bakeries, so they are fed fresh pea soup, bread, potatoes, porridge, stews and so on. Plus, the rations are not supposed to be eaten for more than 3 days straight, even though it is definitely quite nutritious and it comes with a multi-vitamin supplement.
I prefer cans to retort pouches. Tougher and last longer. But also prefer freeze dried too wet, again, lasts longer, also lighter

More like a 36 hr ration if Lol, must be at least 4200 cl. I think the sausage would have been a candidate for heating up, looked at bit gnarly cold.
Karl P this was a big ration, for sure. Almost as calorie dense as the Dutch arctic. Just a little over 5100Cal, which is about double what the average male needs on an everyday basis. Certainly energy requirements are higher in combat situations. 3 MREs are about 3500 Cal. Cold weather requires a lot more just to maintain body temperature.

Clinton Biggs luckily true fakes aren't that common. I got burned with a fake, but watch out for rations listed as mountain rations, but are not. True mountain rations will have about 5000kcal, be Menu 1 or 2, be composed of retort pouches rather than cans, have a flameless ration heater.

The "regular" FSB is 3,500 calories and has 1,2,3 menu. the "real mountain ration" FSB has 5,000+ calories and menu 1 and 2. That's how you can tell the difference.
