I can’t remember what year I went. It was an experience I am so glad I got to do. We were so lucky because there happened to be a huge meteor shower. I can’t put into words what that is like in the middle of the dessert in complete darkness, the closest city 20-30 miles away or more.
Went this year, 729-s-1 itinerary 33 120 miles all I can say is no matter how long a day feels there it is worth it, the first day I got back home I just sat there wanting to be back at philmont cherish every moment
I was at Philmont in the summer of 1983....an experience I will never forget.....hiked over 80 miles, my pack weighed 80 lbs. when we hit the trail, I still have hundreds of memories of my experience at Philmont.....I owe a lot to my scout leaders and the Boy Scouts....
Went in 2010 and 2013, some of the best memories. We took the train from Chicago then to southern Colorado and stayed the night at the Koshare Indian museum for both times. Next day we took a bus there that was several hours to get to. I would go back in a heartbeat, liked it so much and I recommend it to everyone.
I went summer 1997, don't remember which itinerary we did, but I remember hiking baldy and riding horses. I think we got two showers in two weeks at the "canteens" along the way and absolutely gorged ourselves on pizza when we got back to town. Remember everyone using the payphones in town to call home letting everyone know we were alright. Had a blast, have lots of pictures.
Everything they said in this video is so true based on my experience this summer! 719-Lima! Whiteman Vega was by far my favorite campsite plus the Valle Vidale was awesome. We also never had to do the cons. project because it poured rain right as we were about to leave, and we still got our patches! The staff at Baldy Town were awesome and made us dinner when we got into our campsite really late and plus we saw a mountain lion at Seally Canyon which is always an experience.
i remeber i was your age when i first went try asking more qustions about it. One more thing i sugest is trying to see what else you could do to get yourself to go there
The treks vary every year; the treks for this year will change twice before you will go there. To see the itineraries for this year, visit the scouting.org site. The itineraries for 2014 are released on March 15th, so expect a similar date for the 2015 itineraries to be released.
I was there in July 1969. They got us up way early to watch the moon landing on a grainy TV. I forgot to put the mac and cheese up in the tree while visiting an old mine. Didn't think it was that important, but the bear enjoyed the mac and cheese. Thought I would be the butt of criticism but everyone did get a bear picture which we thought we had missed.
I rode a bus from Tennessee to Philmont. Stayed on military bases along the way. McConnell AFB in Wichita and I can’t remember where else we stopped. It was a church I think. I remember the Leadership Corp doing initiations on young scouts. Fun times.
Does anybody know how much it would cost just me to go to Philmont? I am a 16 year old first class scout and no one in my troop wants to go except me and one leader who just turned 19. Is there any special training I should do or preparations?
I have a question. I am going to Philmont in 2015. I love survival and bushcraft. There is about 10 people going and i would like to know if there is a trek and why i should take it. I also want to hike.
I was at Philmont in 1966. The experience changed my life.
