As a little kid, I watched Star Trek and believed that that’s what we would become. A crew made up of all different people who worked together to make things happen. We have astronauts we went to the moon. I thought we were heading in the right directions. Decades Pass and we elected a game show host as President. The more vile and crazy he gets still has people being his cult members. Maybe we really need to invest in our education system.. I’m hanging onto Hope that we figure out before we destroy ourselves.
The education system is so borked precisely to prevent a Star Trek future, to bring about our current situation. Because that system is designed by the people in power who are only there because we run on an Order of Things that is substantially worse than Star Trek. If the future occured, they would lose power, so they prevent it.

Heck, North Carolina is working on passing a law that gets rid of the exemption passed in 2020 that allowed wearing masks in public for health reasons.
I recently spent five years in Europe. Nearly everyone I met had lost a huge amount of respect for the United States because of Trump, and had a lot of fear about what might happen if he is elected again.
It was the opposite for me. The election of Trump proved me correct about the United States. As a matter of fact, there were a lot of head-hanging Black People that couldn't look me in my eye as I told them: "I told you so." Too many people invest more into their fantasy of the U.S. than they do reality of it. And that, to me, is a damn shame.
Unfortunately, that’s not true across the board, as is evidenced by the number of people who watch him just so they can sling stupid questions at him, in the hope of a “gotcha“!!!! (Of course it never works for them, but that doesn’t stop them from trying!!!) 🤣🤣🤣
Green flag - a dog that is calm and confident. Doesn't lunge aggressively, nor hide behind owner's leg, friendly, and tolerant with kids, doesn't bark or whine excessively. We judge people by the quality of their dog, and by how well our dogs take to them. Probably a good reason for this. They'll raise kids the same way they raise dogs.
I've always seen that since I was a child. Pets are a reflection of their humans. The only problem with that is we need to know the pets history, because the best people will rescue abused pets.
Remember to ask how they got the pet and how long they've had them. Because according to this I may be a horrible person. I exclusively have rescues and usually not the "looking for a nice one at the shelter" kind 🤷🏻♀️ I only ever met one of them before they moved in so it's hit or miss. While they often turn out great and always improve, they don't always get to a place where they can make a good impression.
One of the huge green flags of my now husband was that the very anxious and reactive (and sadly also quite bitey) doggo I had back then took to him like they'd known each other for years. I was SO anxious but turned out they immediately clicked.
Lol, big red flag for me, then. I've worked with one of my mother's dogs for 6 years and she's still anxious, reactive, and barkey. And she's not even a rescue/rehomee. The rehomed dog is a LOT more chill and laid-back.

Some wouldn’t believe about aliens, others would sell out the rest of us. 45 and Covid have me understanding human nature and history better than I want to.
For the lady looking for green flags, it’s an old one, but I still swear by it. Look at how people treat those perceived to be “lower status” than themselves. Wait staff etc. massive red flag if they treat them like s**t, but is a massive green flag if they show respect.
As someone born and living in Texas I support the Texas independence people wholeheartedly. They can exercise their desire for independence by leaving America and starting a new state/country somewhere else.
What are the things that scared me the most about covid was that it was basically the tutorial version of global challenge or catastrophe and we screwed it up real hard. We couldn't even manage to wear a mask and separate so aliens, climate change, anything more difficult to deal with not looking good
I definitely agree with you about the effect of COVID on my faith in humanity's ability to come together for a cause. It was the final nail in the coffin of my belief that we will handle climate change appropriately, for sure.

Lol on the salting food! That was a classic thing in day-long job interview situations. Your answer that you had eaten there often and knew the food makes a big difference, imho. Also useful example of there are exceptions to most “rules.”
Sir; absolutely put stock in her asking you WHY you salted your food before you tasted it and even more stock in her being confident enough to ask WHY and : your correct answer. Best love story i've heard in a long while.
My reaction was, well, anyone who cooks, especially professionally, has put a lot of time into making sure the flavors coaxed out are exactly as he or she wants someone to experience the dish. So seasoning their food before tasting it could be considered an insult to the chef.
The EX president is experiencing dementia, I worked with dementia patients for over 10 years. There’s no stopping it, and an intervention would be the kindest thing to happen here.
Pls don't push this narrative. It's reductive, insulting to dementia patients and more importantly unhelpful. Trump has been confidently spewing out wild, inaccurate claims fully divorced from reality since at least 1980. If dementia was a contributing factor then he'd be dead by now. Whether it's a contributing factor now is beyond our knowing. His doctors might know, WE DON'T. What we do know is that he was fully capable of and willing to make blatantly false, self-serving claims about himself and the world when he was in his mid-30's. Call it out for what it has always been: naked populism in the service of personal power. Bringing up dementia may effectively impugn his competence. It may even convince a tiny number of voters. But it does so based on nothing but conjecture with no factual support. And that opens the door to the same being done to everyone else: Biden, you, me, everyone. It isn't helpful. It makes the discourse worse, moving it even further away from dealing with truth. Please stop.

I’ve heard the story about salting your food in reference to a job interview. It implied as Beau said, making decisions without the needed information.

For dealing with heat without electricity: I live in a part of Europe that regularly gets heatwaves and I don't have AC, nor does anyone else that I know. Best method by far: use a long thick cotton cloth (like the ones used for drying dishes, or longer). Soak in cold water, wring out, and drape over you shoulders and the back of your neck. You can drape it over your head if you need to be in the sun, but avoid if possible. It's incredibly effective. And it lets you continue your daily life, albeit slowed down. Obviously drink more water than usual.
@@vforwombat9915 I meant best method for immediate use with no cost or needing to own or have access to a particular type of house or property. Of course the greater your means, the better the solutions you can put in place. Cellars are great in a heatwave. If you have access to one. I don't know if "Canadian wells" are called that in English? Lay a ventilation shaft into the ground through your garden horizontally about 1,50 metres deep (depends on depth of frost in your region). The air that comes into the house will have the temperature of the earth. Which should be about 15°C, year round. It is useful in both winter and summer. But it needs a certain length, and it depends on you having the land and the means to dig a trench, lay a pipe and install a ventilation system, or better still, make it so that it functions by convection. Not everyone has that. But if you live in a 5th floor apartment, or have to work away from home, the towel is still a really good and versatile option, that requires no funds, no complicated installation, and can be implemented with no help and no prior planning.
Another use of water/cloth - grandmother used to tack wet cloth (loose woven) to full open windows to catch the breeze - sort of evaporative cooling. Doesn't work so well in high humidity areas, but does help in dryer climates.

12:30 to the person who just got a raise and wants a lawnmower: I was also raised in a low income environment. It's easy for me to fall into the "buy the most low cost option" camp. For bigger purchases that should last for a while, I've found better cost effectiveness with a "buy once" philosophy. Spending a little more upfront can save you money on future replacements. If you want to get the best option long term, find a local guy who does small engine repair and ask him what lawnmower he would get. Prioritizing repairability will also save you money in the long run (and keep trash out of the environment.) Depending on your aptitudes and time availability, a small engine repair community class at your local community college could also save you money in the long run. Good luck and congrats on your raise
There's also a ton of video's on You Tube demonstrating how to repair/maintain things. Also grow things. Most vegetables can be cleaned/blanched/frozen in freezer bags. For the cost of a few packs of seeds. Any appliance that has a heating element needs to go in the trash. I found my MrCoffee was costing me $10/month. lol And the month ahead thing works all by itself. Add up ALL your bills for the last year including licenses, registrations, Everything. Divide the total by 52. This amount goes in the bank EVERY week. At the end of the year you should have 1 full months amount of money not earmarked, free. A month is deemed as 4 weeks, or 12 payment periods. But a year actual equals 13 months, 52 divided 4. This takes some will power, tenacity. But it works. @guavaberries is right. I've been there too, lived in a tent for about 3 months at one point. Sucked, but I had to suck it up to get back on my feet. Happens.

Regarding your comment about COVID and faith in humanity in the context of alien arrival: I share that opinion. There’s an old video game called “Plague, Inc” where you play the role of a pandemic trying to kill off all of humanity. It’s tragic that a game with so bleak of a premise is more optimistic about the reaction of mankind than what actually happened when SARS COV-2 reared its spike proteins.
To the person asking about the additional income: 1st, DO buy the lawnmower because getting something like that is going to both be a useful tool and scratch any itch to spend more. 2nd, gradually invest in things that will help you save more, earn more, or protect you better. For example, paying down a mortgage/ car loan (less spent overall towards interest), home improvements like increased insulation/ more efficient and/ or stronger windows & doors, more energy/water efficient appliances (reducing utility bills long term), improvements that will harden your home against weather extremes (check for any that will lead to discounts on insurance). 3rd, learn about sinking funds/ savings buckets and fill them. 4th, invest in the future such as your retirement, future education for family members, your health, etc. 5th, use at least a small portion to help/ bless/ improve the lives of others, especially since you know what life is like on a tight budget.

A "green flag" that my wife once said took me out of the "date once category" was that when we met I didn't drive a Corvette or seem to be going through a mid-life crisis.
Red/Green flags are definitely largely person-to-person. Heck, a woman who doesn't own at *least* one gaming platform (Xbox, PlayStation, PC, Nintendo) is a 🚩 red flag 🚩 to me. One of the biggest green flags I came across with my then-woman now-wife is the fact that she is also a Gamer herself. 😁 Aside form the obvious stuff, relationship parameters really *is* individualistic to the person.
I’m with you Beau - the level of distrust, and polarity during and after Covid was not on my bingo list. Budget guy: read Your Money or Your Life. I’ve used a system for decades. Paid off the house five years ago and paid cash for the last car. You’ve got a good head on your shoulders, I know you’ll do great!
Paying off your house is considered by financial advisors to me a poor investment. If you put that money (assuming you are paying a reasonable interest) into growth stocks or growth mutual funds you will have more money in the long term. Paying cash for everything else is always the best way to go.
I paid it off 9 years early. I’m now saving $2000/month. And I don’t have any concerns about rent increases. Paid less than the price of rent for a VERY long time. Not sure who these financial advisers are, but you can keep them. I pay cash for just about everything now. Have a nice day.
Time to reset the bar Beau. Mines at my ankle and I am happier for it. When things go right it's a pleasant surprise. When things go wrong, well that's just normal, so no big deal.
Getting too hot? Take a cold shower and stay in there until your skin is starting to do the goosebumps thing and you are beginning to feel seriously chilled. Do not dry yourself off, let the water evaporate off of you taking more heat away. For fifteen minutes or so the world will feel wonderfully warm. For as much as an hour later you'll feel 'comfortable enough'. After another hour or three, repeat. (Make sure the drain is closed while you are showering, having your feet in 'not as cold as it was' water will still be losing heat.
I really like the "one raise behind" adjustment for lifestyle tip. The rule of thumb I've used is to increase my retirement savings by a portion of the percentage of the raise; if it's a 5% raise, I might increase my retirement savings through my employer by 2% and it's both going into a fund that will help me later, and I won't "miss it." As a recovering poor kid, that change is nebulous; I don't know what it looks like day to day to live with a 5% raise, so it's like "free money" for that extra amount going into savings.

Hmm. This makes me somewhat nervous since Im not much of a pet person overall. If someone didn't have an interest in keeping pets is that a red or yellow flag?

The election of Trump shattered my perception of our country. That reality crushed the esteem I had for the citizenry of the USA.
I felt that way about Obama. I knew the USA would decline (and it has).

I recently spent five years in Europe. Nearly everyone I met had lost a huge amount of respect for the United States because of Trump, and had a lot of fear about what might happen if he is elected again.
That first happened to me with Bush Jr, so by the time the _Orange One_ rolled around I wasn't surprised.
It was the opposite for me.
The election of Trump proved me correct about the United States. As a matter of fact, there were a lot of head-hanging Black People that couldn't look me in my eye as I told them: "I told you so."
Too many people invest more into their fantasy of the U.S. than they do reality of it. And that, to me, is a damn shame.

I prefer cats.

Both sides really. And who is responsible? Both parties. Pox on them all.

We are sorta blue here
I just figured he doesn’t know the difference between Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, and Montana.
Survived many hot, humid summers without AC, with quick, cool showers.
Unfortunately, we WILL see a wet bulb crisis this century in a major population center.
If the humidity is too high, water cannot cool you down.
Also, if your water requires electricity to pump, you're sol.
"Best method by far:"
drive north to the arctic circle.

oh, your towel thing might be useful too.
also, cellars.
ground is a great insulator.
They have hiking cooling cloths specifically for this purpose, but I expect the cotton stays wet longer.
I'm in America, lol just poor , that's my method, that and blacking out windows.

I like that idea of living your life one pay-raise behind. Saving is always smart.
12:30 to the person who just got a raise and wants a lawnmower:
I was also raised in a low income environment.
There's also a ton of video's on You Tube demonstrating how to repair/maintain
things. Also grow things. Most vegetables can be cleaned/blanched/frozen
in freezer bags. For the cost of a few packs of seeds. Any appliance that has
a heating element needs to go in the trash. I found my MrCoffee was costing
me $10/month. lol And the month ahead thing works all by itself. Add up ALL
your bills for the last year including licenses, registrations, Everything.
Divide the total by 52. This amount goes in the bank EVERY week. At the end of the year you should have 1 full months amount of money not earmarked, free.
A month is deemed as 4 weeks, or 12 payment periods. But a year actual equals
13 months, 52 divided 4. This takes some will power, tenacity. But it works.

17:19 "Don't Look Up" nailed this basic idea.
The rule of thumb I've used is to increase my retirement savings by a portion of the percentage of the raise; if it's a 5% raise, I might increase my retirement savings through my employer by 2% and it's both going into a fund that will help me later, and I won't "miss it."
As a recovering poor kid, that change is nebulous; I don't know what it looks like day to day to live with a 5% raise, so it's like "free money" for that extra amount going into savings.
Thanks for taking us along this road.
