    The Canon EOS R5 is really an amazing nifty little camera, considering the specs that it packs. But of course, we aren’t going to delve too much into video. Here, we take a look at it for it is. A mirrorless, full-frame DSLR type camera that’s supposedly meant to take great photos, and kind of be on par with the flagship which most people agree, hands down, is amazing, the 1DX Mark 3.
    Which by the way, yeah, we did give it a run quite a while back.
    So how does this stack up?
    Is the R5 going to be your next main camera?

    Thank you for this review. I have the R5 and I absolutely love it. You reminded me to to update the firmware for the lenses that I have.that is the one thing I did when I had the R and Tamron lenses. Now that I have RF lenses that work so well I hadn't thought to update them.

    Upgraded to my R5 from an aging 1D mkIV. I fully understand what you are talking about with the build! reminds me of my EOS 1200D i owned many years ago lol. it seriously feels kind of cheap and more like a cheap model than a high end flagship. I've even asked friends that aren't photographers which is the better camera..... I've only had the pleasure of using my new camera with an older EF 70-200 ii. the images even out out that lens blow my mind! can't wait for the RF 24-100 to eventually turn up! Thanks for the great review that puts the STILL side first!

    Wow! I don't know how I missed that you are right here in Singapore! Thanks for the "Photo-centric" review. Most others are 90% video which I could care less about. The R5 will probably be my next purchase as soon as Amazon has them back in stock. Also considered the R6 but I crop too much and too often for 20mp.

    Great video for those of us that bought the R5 for photography more over video. I bought mine back in January of this year. I did buy a 50mm f/1.2 lens and love it, especially in low light conditions. I'm considering the 70~200mm as a walk around lens. I went from an 80D to the R5. Had wanted a 5D Mk Iv for some time. Now I'm glad I waited. Thanks again for the video.

    Hey Bobby, Jose from Puerto Rico. Fantastic! You nailed it again man! You focused on stills and that's what I like. I dig your style of shooting: shutting off the camera and turn it back on when you see something you like; nice! It reminds me of the film days and you wanted to squeeze every bit of juice from those "pill" sized batteries. Having said that I don't think you'd have any issues with heating even if you didn't turn it off since you were shooting stills. I've seen other reviews focused on stills and never had any problems with heating. I also don't think it's gonna put a dent on the IDX mark III since that camera has a specialized type of photographer who relies on the ruggedness of a DSLR (that acts like a mirrorless). I can see these pros using the IDX Mark III for sheer speed and have an R5 as a back-up kit. What do you think?

    Again great video ... One of the best channels i came across.. Agreed, great camera.. Canon again at the top of their game.. great job on that one.. I think compared to the Sony a9II the R5 has a better Eye AF.. the tracking on the R5 is beyond amazing.. Don't get me wrong , i use the Sony a9II as well as i own it , and i think the Sony has an amazing Tacking but when I have tried the R5, i think canon perfected that side of the camera.. Both Cameras are comfortable ... they are sharp as hell when subject is moving .. but the resolution advantage is obvious on the canon vs Sony.. If i haven't been heavily invested in the Sony lenses at this point, i would definitely would love to own this camera for Wildlife Photography..

  • @jdpst20
    @jdpst20 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's interesting that you use the word refined. I for one was so obsessed with this for the longest time. My images and video had to be perfectly sharp zero noise and video needed to be perfectly smooth or else it was junk. I think it's all subjective to shooting style and archiving a certain look. Sure depending on the project/client different tools for different jobs, but since switching from the 1DXii to my Fuji system I've found that I don't always need that "perfect" shot to capture what I'm trying to show. It's for sure a balance but I guess what I'm trying to say is that what I've noticed from switching from Canon to Fuji is the Fuji looks a bit more organic or natural to me and when I took photos with the Canon it was more "digital" or electronic or binary if that is a word to describe it. Still would LOVE an R5 though haha if $$$ was not an option but I see what you mean is that you would need to tailor your shooting and editing style a touch more. Fuji for me, I shoot, send to my phone the JPEG and simple edit and boom I'm finished, that unless It's for a paying client and they need higher res images.

      @@TECH360TV I think I remember that you don't currently own a digital camera (neither do I, I just sold my A7III last year to commit to film). Which camera system are you leaning towards if you had to choose? I know you're a big fan of the SL2, does the canon sway you?

    • @TECH360TV
      @TECH360TV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you are right. I own a leica MP film camera.
      That’s a very tough choice right now. In terms of performance photography wise I’m impressed with Canon quite a bit. The camera just works and if you are using this for assignments you won’t miss a shot.
      The SL2 is a beautiful camera to use but I’m waiting for the AF to be improved.
      I also like the S1R quite a bit as well. I think in the L mount it’s the high megapixel camera that is the more logical choice. Faster card slots, consistent updates etc.
      For video I’m in love with the A7SIII. It’s a fantastic camera.
      I’m also waiting to see what Nikon reveals this week. Love the system and I think the quality of files are really good.

    I’m at a bit of a cross roads with my current gear at the moment and looking to upgrade. Presently I have a Canon EOS 1DS3 and a 1D3 and I was looking at the 1DX3, I have dipped my toe in the Canon mirror less System by having the R and I’m very surprised with it having seen all the negative reviews and produces really nice images with my current lens lineup from the brilliant EF 11 - 24 F4L , 24 - 105 F4 L 70 - 200 F2.8 IS v2 L Sigma 105 F1.4 Art and the 400 F4 DO. The low light performance of my 1 series are now showing their age as anything above ISO 3200 is very noisy and with a lot of colour banding with the 1DS3, do I get the R5 and R6 combo or the 1DX3 as I mainly shoot portraits and weddings with some outdoor and landscape. Low noise in low light and accurate AF are a must especially in the UK as our weather being changeable .

    • @TECH360TV
      @TECH360TV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Both the R5 and R6 will be better for you than the 1DX3 in my opinion. Better AF, fast, and the R6 has great Low light performance. If you need the higher resolution sensor then R5

    In my opinion it wasnt Canon that positioned this camera "video first". It was youtubers and tech media in general that put most of the emphasis on its video specs. They all got a bit over exited when they read "8k". People have a tendancy to want more than they can have and those who dont want to pay for a video camera just got themselves a bit over exited as a result of this. I have no interest in video, and as such my judgement wasnt tainted by this over expectation. As a result, it was always fairly clear in my mind what the video limitations of this camera were likely to be. Canon use the term "cinema" camera as a way of differentiating its hybrid cameras but everyone worked themselves into a lather , naively expecting cinema camera performance which was never going to happen in a unit without a fan. So anyway Canon have now improved things through firmware and hopefully all this nonsensical whinging about the secondary functions of a hybrid camera will die down. The R5 is an awsome stills camera first and foremost.

    • @TECH360TV
      @TECH360TV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Valid points but Canons marketing material was all about 8k in the beginning. Also what they announced on the camera first was the video features before the megapixels etc.
      Both are to blame for this, but at the end of the day It is Canon’s camera. They have the final say and that was primarily video.

    • @TECH360TV
      @TECH360TV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Noise is dependent on ISO. I feel the R5 does a good job with noise control. Yes this sensor can compete with the A7RIV in terms of sharpness mainly due to the lenses. The RF lenses are really high performing lenses. Sony has some great lenses but some are needed a refreshing if possible

    Excellent review. Thank you. I conclude that the R5 is fabulous but too expensive. You've mentioned the high price while most reviewers focus on the technical aspects and ignore the crucial cost/value for money aspects. So, thank you. This camera is £4,200 in the UK. The resolution of the R6 does not provide a reasonable alternative so I will probably stick with Sony and wait for the R5 price to reduce.

      When I heard about the R5 in May, I sold my A7RIV on the spot and preordered the R5. I got the camera in the first days of August and shot a Weeding one day later. I am very impressed of the IQ and the Dynamic Range of the pictures. I would never go back. Also, the colors straight out of camera are more to my taste. I almost never could benefit from the Sony 60Mpix resolution, only if conditions allowed for ISO 100 or less. In my opinion, the signal to noise ratio is much better on the R5.
      I shot sony for several years. Still use my A9 with the 200-600mm and the GM 70-200mm, both very good lenses. However, I just love the R-lenses (having a 85mm F1.2 , a 28-70mm F2, a 24-105mm F4 and the 35mm F1.8). These lenses alone are worth a consideration of the R-System.

    So, before the mirrorless cameras and the lenses, the Canon lenses just sucked? How did they ever get all those great Sports Illustrated photos to look so good and all the wedding photos and everything? I think this is all "Hype" for the new cameras. Every 4 years a new one becomes the latest and greatest. There is NOTHING WRONG with the EF lenses, especially the L II Series. I have used the R6 and the R5. I would take the 5D Mark IV or 1DX Mark III any day. Solid feel. Great lens. Great focus. Great photos. Love the shutter sound. I think many will regret jumping on the bandwagon for these new mirrorless ones.

  • @MichaelMa
    @MichaelMa 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    35 1.4 II looks cinematic because it's not sharp as an RF lens? That is Canon's sharpest EF lens to date. And I think it took a little bit of the organic feel from the original 35mm 1.4 L. I think I'll stick with my EF lenses. Also, Canon colors look muted on the EOS R/5D4 compared to the 5D III/II/Classic. So if the R5 raw is more muted tha than the EOS R, that's not a good sign. I would assume less micro contrast due to internal noise reduction but maybe it's just trying to fit more dynamic range on an 8 bit monitor when the file is first opened.

    • @TECH360TV
      @TECH360TV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      35 1.4 II is not Canons sharpest lens anymore. The RF lenses are considerably sharper. So compared to the RF variants it has a bit more of that organic feel to me. None the less it’s a beautiful lens
      As for the raw files they are different. Some prefer it, some prefer the traditional look of Canon Raw files. It took me a while to adjust to it and now I’m okay with the output

    If you think about it Canon and Nikon are supposed to be better than Sony because they are primarily a Camera company, while Sony is a general tech company. The fact that both Canon ( until now) and Nikon have trailed Sony is very telling. Since Canon and Adobe stopped being friends (the last Canon camera that Lightroom provided matching camera profiles was Eos R, after that EOS RP, EOS 90D, M6II, R5 and R6, Adobe stopped giving us camera matching profiles, even though they give it us on 99% of all our released cameras from other manufacturers (even newly released ones). Something happened between Adobe and Canon couple years ago and now that's the result. You get Adobe profiles which are horrible. Lack of matching profiles may explain when you put R5 (or RP, or 90D) files in Lightroom and they look like shit.

    I would like to ask an opinion if I may. Love the reviews... been looking at the R5 and R6. I only shoot photos and do ZERO video. I don't do any people or animal photography. 95% of what I shoot is on an Airfield (Airshows primarily, sometimes commercial or civil aviation). I know I am in a "narrow lane". I shoot a 5DMk4 and the 90D both with the EF100-400L II IS USM. The 5DMk4 is a great body but its 7FPS is at the margin of what I need. The 90D does 10 FPS and is great too but I do want a faster FPS full frame. Then there's the 1DMkIII which I think you've reviewed so I need to go find that one. Shooting jets is a bit more forgiving w/ an EVF, however propeller-driven stunt planes and warbirds (WWII), that clock 350 mph w/ a prop spinning at 2000 RPM seem to really make an EVF cumbersome. I hear you can adjust the EVF refresh to get "close" to the more preferred OVF (for this type of shooting) but have not tried it. I have hit jets clocking Mach .98 w/ my 5Dmk4 at 7FPS but the hit rate, needless to say, is not great. The R5 w/ its higher resolution would be preferable but in cloudy sky conditions, the higher resolution could result in more noise. The 1DXmkIII is obviously the flagship (and still has the OVF - I guess this is why many sports folks haven't jumped on the mirrorless train as fast). However, it's a serious investment which I'm not sure I can justify. I have had some work published in mags here and there but don't make a living at this. Opinions welcome... thanks.

      Hi Mark. Thanks for watching and the question I guess it depends on do you print your work for galleries or to sell. If so how large?
      The R5 and R6 performance is about the same. The big differences of course are the resolution, better EVF on the R5 and CF Express card on the R5 vs R6. There are minor differences outside of that but these are the main ones.
      As good as the R6 is, if I’m about resolution and need to crop I would opt for the R5.
