Been visiting the website for decades, didn’t know papa Ken had a TH-cam channel. Wonderful review, refreshing that he starts with pictures and then focuses on stuff that actually matters - ergonomics and personal reflections on features when in-use. I have similar experiences with my R5, very happy with it!

I like and have followed Ken for years, but he must be getting paid for by Canon, as he is outright lying and completely distorting everything he can think of related to the R5, and literally making things up about the new SONY. I have a 5DSR, a 1DXII and two C300M2’s. However, probably because Canon started the mirrorless race 4 years later than SONY and is now very obviously afraid to have the R5 take market share away from their videography cameras, they have aborted several critical features and competely botched others. No secure redundant dual cards, even though it has two slots. That alone makes it too risky to use when there are plenty of better options that do provide that. Pretty much all pro options for the past several years. A hard stop 30 minute recording limit, with a 2-3 hour “recover time” during which it is a brick- I mean come on... 8K+ is mostly used for long form interview on journalism, but this camera will not give you much more than 10 minutes (if you are lucky) after setup. It’s stills are great, but again, no secure, redundant storage. For anyone who has ever lost a shot due to SD failure (over 50% of photogs, and 70% of working pro’s) that is just asking for failure.
Meanwhile he lied about everything he could think about related to the A7S3, which all over the Web by people who were loaned the camera, as well as people they then loaned it to, both SONY users and haters are calling it the best video camera ever produced- pretty much at any price.
Like I said, he must be getting paid or gear from Canon...

Sandra Muncelli Hi Sandra, nope; Canon doesn’t send me anything. I just love their stuff. Remember that I’m an artist making work to hang on gallery walls. I’ve never used anything Canon for video as you are. I spent ten years in Hollywood; if I’m shooting a motion picture, I’m renting Panavison or Arri. Thanks!

@@sandramuncelli7976 I'm not sure that your argument is made more persuasive by questioning the character and scruples of Mr. Rockwell. Nor does it convince me that you like him.
Certainly, if I want a commercial videographers take of the R5, I would have watched (and in fact have watched) someone other than Mr. Rockwell, who I primarily know as a knowledgable stills photographer from his extensive work done over the decades on his website. I am so glad to find you on TH-cam, Ken. I vividly remember how I was directed to your review website, by my mentors, when I started my photography journey a little over decade ago. Since then every gear purchase has had to mandatorily go through your views before I emptied my wallet. Incidentally, now when I am struggling to make the purchase decision on R5, I bumped into your channel here - pleasantly surprised 😊! Thank you for your excellent review, as always!!

I remember when your website was bright yellow back in 2000, I bought and SB28 (still have it) on your recommendation for my old N90s(which you did not like the camera that much but got it cheap, and still have it). In 2002 I bought a D100 (still have it) after I seen your review and got me started into digital photography.. What I always liked about you is your ability to handle nay-sayer and harsh critics with a positive friendly attitude and you still do it that today. Good job over the years. Your video was great on the R5. I put my order in for one. 20 years later I am still listening to the advise of Ken Rockwell.

Another lovely video by Ken Rockwell. Apart from looking at the fantastic images that cameras produce these days, I also love looking Ken’s many pictures of the state of California because I live in Yorkshire, an ancient historical and beautiful county in ancient England in Europe which is an often rather cold country. We have a maritime climate here although just recently it’s been extremely hot and for many months. However, the Californian climate would suit me perfectly. The Spanish styled architecture is truly stunning. I love those deep blue skies, the hills, the desert, the tall palm trees, first planted by Spanish Franciscan and Jesuit missionaries in 1769. Thank you, Ken for the review. Like I’ve said before I’m coming to California at some point! Maybe I should change my camera for my visit? I remember you saying that Fuji cameras seem to be stuck on permanent portrait mode, so I need something a little bit different. Before anyone jumps down my throat, I know this is a video about the Canon EOS R5 and not a Fuji camera. I was just having a ramble...

Thanks! I don’t know that anyone bashed me; I speak from genuine experience and talent (ahem) so casual shooters often have misconceptions and disagree with the way full time career pros shoot. remember DPR has never been written by shooters; their founder was a computer programmer who sold it to amazon years ago, and today at best its writers are young hobbyists - not experienced career artists or full time pros by any stretch of the imagination. They’re thorough, but lack the experience to know what’s really important and often follow the same misleading trends as other hobbyists. Thanks!!!

one of the annoyances with the r5 (besides the inflated price and overheating) is that it needs to be customized much more heavily than a dslr to be enjoyable to use.
If the body was alittle bigger it would allow an improved button layout. im still puzzled by the lack of a mechanical mode dial, no other camera company has removed it on their high end cameras. the electronic mode dial is a PITA to press - its just as bad as the touchbar imo.
also BBAF feels a bit awkward due to the recessed feel of the AF on button, the info, Q and zoom buttons are a bit small and cramped (make sure you trim your fingernails before shooting). There are too many buttons on the right side of the camera, it just doesn't "feel" right to me. The camera will definitely produce great results but I can't help but feel the usability has been compromised. It feels more like an expensive consumer level camera than a professional tool like the 5d4.
Canon seems to be prioritizing aesthetics and compactness over function and usability, and somebody there is making really bad design decisions. Its seems like the team that designed the pro DSLR bodies (5d4, 1dx3) had zero input for the RF bodies. The extending zoom mechanism of the rf 70-200 2.8 is too cumbersome for shooting sports.
I'm curious to see the body design of the R1, the rumoured professional level body. if they get that right it would give me hope that things could change in the future bodies.

Canon EOS R5. Much better as I see it. Better handling, better images (better color). If you want to make money at this when you say ‘pro,’ then spend as little as you can on gear until you actually start making money. Personally I’d stick with my favorite 5DS/R which is on dale on close out for $1,499 USD at www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1119027-REG/canon_0582c002_eos_5ds_r_dslr.html?BI=287&KBID=1037

this is truly the pinnacle of all camera's out there, sense the Nikon D850. this camera rules both in Still Photography and Video, you can actually get video clips in 8K crazy, and at 4k you can record in high frame rates, this camera is the BEST Camera so far out there today i agree, yes it's $5,000.00 but well worth the extra money.

Now, you're full of praises of an MILC Canon EOS R5 which is justified. Thank you in advance.

Hi Ken, enjoyed the review!! If money is not an issue would you recommend R5 or Canon 1DX Mk3 for an amateur sports photographer? (Main reason for consideration : cannot capture indoor basketball events with Nikon D750 or Canon 6D Mk2.. always too blurry or too grainy)

    • @KenRockwellTV
      @KenRockwellTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว

That’s a tough one. The 1DX III, as an SLR, makes a load of noise and the finder gets all wishy washy since the mirror is spending as much time moving as actually showing you the finder imahe. I’d try the R5 or R6 first; they do it much more elegantly. Thanks!

Ken, does the R5's EVF update more quickly than the EOS R's? The latter displays the last recorded image long enough to be problematic when shooting sequences of a moving subject. Last October I was taking trackside sequences of the approaching Big Boy 4014 and this EVF discontinuity made precise framing while zooming a real challenge. In that regard the EVF was inferior to a DSLR's continuous real time display. If the R5 is a solid step forward in EVF performance I will upgrade!

@@KenRockwellTV - No question. Just thanking you for putting me in the direction of the R5. I don't watch and trust a lot of YT's as you said, many with conflicts of interest. Found an R5 in stock after 20 minutes of deep searching and it will be here on Friday! Looking way forward to it! Had no idea that Sony was old news and old tech as you said. Thanks for setting me straight on that. I had thought about that new low light Sony because I do a lot of video each week. But I never liked those other deep menus and 8K will be great so I don't have to setup multiple interview cams! I had budgeted quite a bit more $$$, but I already have Canon glass, so the R5 is perfect based on everything you explained and its specifications. Hi Ken, does the R5 produce more noise with post shadow recovery than the A7riv? Pretty much everything about the R5 seems superior, but I'm not familiar with canon sensors. I do plan on doing large print and am wondering how much resolution I would lose and if there is noticeably more recovery noise with the R5. thx.
That battery life is disappointing. Reality is most people chimp their images rather frequently on a digital camera. 2-300 images is a little over an hour of shooting before you have to swap batteries, and more batteries translates to more weight in the backpack.

As always, the definitive answers lie in my written review and sample files and never at TH-cam. See the samples from both cameras at www.kenrockwell.com/sony/a7r-iv.htm#perf and www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/r5.htm#highisos and you can see for yourself. I worry less about shadow details than the colors in the important parts, and for that, Canon looks way better - but we all have our preferences. For the most glowing shadows, use iso 50 on either of these. Thanks!

When I shoot in mechanical shutter mode, 1)does the sensor using same AF area like in mirrorless mode? 2) Is the performance of AF in mechanical mode is same or different than in mirrorless mode?
From what I know, the AF areas( in these two modes) and alogorithms of AF should be different.
And does the R6 AF performace and and IQ at highers ISO's , is same or better than 1Dx ii?( for shooting sports). Deciding between R6 and 1Dx ii for sports.

I'd love to see Canon drop another body with a pixel count of 26 or 30mp exclusively focussing on photocentric features. R5 has everything, but 8k is kinda overkill and many photographers don' need that. (IMO) R6 is an awesome option, but for those who need that additional/extra pixel, a body with 30mp, top LCD (Culling the top LCD in R6 is a crime :( -- Personally I would feel handicapped), illuminated buttons, better weather sealing, etc., will be something awesome. With that, photographers will have an option to choose between R5 and R6 and priced accordingly to be the "best universal camera" (As Ken mentioned in his 5DMk4 review). I believe Ken's feedback will be given priority by Canon :)

Hey Ken, lots of respect for your knowledge of systems old and new. Two years ago I moved from Canon to Sony and as much as I love seeing what Canon is doing that little detail of dynamic range is a huge reason I'm happier with how sony works. Not to get into a contest but I'm genuinely curious how the Canon sensors work versus Sony's design. With my A7R3 I can set my camera to ISO 640 and just raise my exposure in post. When I was using canon I found myself constantly taking multiple exposures then combining them later in lightroom for an HDR but of course for moving subjects or even wind that practice is less than ideal. Another thing, I lived within 10 miles of a Canon service center (Jamesburg NJ)... even with that I wasn't thrilled with the service, I had some very expensive lens repairs that could have been something minor but there was no looking at the lens, it was all new motors, etc without any recourse, I once spent more to fix a used lens that I later sold it for only months later. I actually had better service with Sony recently in regards to in warranty repairs. Still an interesting camera, I do hope Canon at some point increase dynamic range to be on par with others.

    • @robwasnj
      @robwasnj 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@KenRockwellTV I'd never say I had a "problem" with any system, I've been doing photography since the days I had a darkroom, i also read the basic photo 5 by Ansel Adams (before they condensed it into 3 books). I"ve pushed and pulled film, shot Kodachrome 25, 64 and other slide films with very narrow dynamic range. Indeed, knowing your medium is key and of course you can be creative and get fantastic photos with all sorts of gear, some scenes surely do not require more dynamic range. WIth all this said I never see a camera having more DR to be an issue, later in post I can crush the shadows or clip the highlights with a simple slider and add all that i want back. There's a lot of situations where I have to take the light I'm given and I do not have the opportunity to change or add light to improve it and in those scenarios the A7R3 has been a fantastic camera. Much of what I enjoy shooting are live performances that have often very high contrast stage lighting, oftentimes some of the performers are not lit favorably. Coming from using Canon cameras it was one thing I REALLY noticed was much better (for me). Other things about the Sony I didn't care for, god awful LCD screen, terrible feel in the hand without adding a grip, disappointing AF especially in video. The menus which everyone seems to hate have never been an issue. I'd love to shoot an R5 or have another photographer with one present at the same event with the same conditions and compare the output side by side. I also realize this review is for photography not videography but it's a nice bonus being able to shoot literally 2 hours of continuous 4K video without issues short of restating it every 30 minutes. Again, I'm pretty confident in my skills as a photographer, I even do sunny 16 calcs in my head to this day having shot so many cameras with broken light meters it's 2nd nature. I'll have to look at more comparisons but from everything I've experienced and seen in the past DR is one thing the Canon has been behind on compared to other brands and for some of us that's a very big deal.

The only caveat I found was the slow aperture at the long end, but its still better than the RF 24-105/4-7.1!
And am really happy you love this superzoom as much as I do. Of course, the RP isn't as good as the R5, but as amateur I can't afford this beast.
Thanks for your great work (not just this video)

Ken Rockwell thanks for you comment. Just saw how good the autofocus works on the R5 and the tracking! There must be some reasons why it’s 2.000 USD more expensive.
But I just upgraded from my Nikon D90, after I tried taking sunsets and saw that 95% of the shots were out of focus as camera searched between close flower, bushes, far away trees and sun at virtually infinity. So understood it‘s a 14 year old technology against a 1 year old technology.

Thousands for sports shots. Expect 320 if you stop and fiddle and play back each one and change settings, or thousands if you just shoot and don’t look back and futz. . Yes, but not much. Canon 5DS/R has a tiny bit more resolution. 1DX III is tougher than any of the other cameras and runs faster with flash 14 vs 12 FPS.

I am an amateur photographer and I wish to switch to Canon Mirroless, although I am a Nikon DX user, but Nikon closed its own technical assistance here a few years ago.
If customer service in the US is poor, imagine it here. I have a Nikon D7000 with a sticky grip after 7 years of use and I was suggested to send the camera to New York, USA.
Will Mr. Rockwell review a new EOS-M camera or just when Canon launches an EOS-M with equivalent performance to Canon 7D Mark II?

Great alternative review, or is that...real world. Disappointed with the loss of detail in the shadows at higher ISO, this appears to be incremental rather than ground breaking in terms of R&D. I've been saying it for a long time now, but phone tech. is driven by shear numbers sold, so development and software rules the waves. Some stunning pictures though, and all the features point to a stills camera, first and foremost, but it's the videographers that seem to be snapping them up. Love your reviews Ken.

Can’t quite work out why but your audio drifts around over the stereo field. There is either some kind of fault or maybe you are using a stereo mic that is close to you and you are turning your head whilst talking. It’s a little disconcerting.
