This was one of the best camera reviews I've ever seen on TH-cam in YEARS. We are CRAVING authenticity and just like your work, you've given us it. Thanks Forrest.
That is so incredibly kind - thank you so much for that and I'm glad to hear that just talking just like you would to a buddy can work on this platform. Thanks Matt.
I skipped on R5 for the new R6 based on file size and this video made me feel better about it. So far Ive had zero issues especially because 99% of my work is for social media marketing for non photographers who think everything is amazing.
I think the r6II is a sweet spot for sure, and the R5 files are definitely overkill, but hey you can't tell that to hardly anyone, haha. Even photographers will ask me if 1dx stuff was shot on gfx etc.
@@ForrestMankins Since i use craw (28mb iso 100) on my R5, i feel like i handle raw-files of my R6 (20.1mb iso 100)🙂. But with more resolution. R6MII has 24.1mb (iso 100). Not that much of a difference.
I'd like to recommend craw, cr3 files are great. Also, I love carrying my r5 everywhere. I know there are smaller cameras, I had the rp and sold it in the end, but to save 300 grams and a few mm here and there when I lug a 70-200 f/2.8 or 100-500 around, it doesn't matter too much. If I only shot on an rf 50 1.8, yeah, smaller body for sure. But once you go to larger lenses, the weight difference between the cameras is the least of my worries 🤣. Regardless, great review! I love my r5. Sadly though it doesn't feel as robust as my 80D did, for instance. The new mirrorless cameras feel much more fragile...
I recently upgraded from the R6 to the R5 and love it! Regarding the power button, you can set the camera to auto power off after 2 mins or longer if you like rather than using the power button as often.
Forrest, I found you on Twitter and just wanted to say I love your content. Your discussions on Canon cameras have been very helpful as I consider the options when upgrading from the Canon R!
thanks so much! really the only reason i upgraded from the R was to get the joystick. i think that the original R, r6, r6II, or r5 are all great, and all well beyond the threshold of pro quality, it's just more about what little things work for you.
I have shot and owned all the major brands I love the Canon system the best, not perfect but no system is perfect as you have pointed out in your video.
I picked one up before covering a race weekend and, I hate to use the term, but it really felt like a game changer. That autofocus had me shooting above my level. Insane camera.
I remember the first job I shot with it, and I was in disbelief. Even coming from the R and 1DXII. Such a good camera, and the more time I spend with it the more I like it. Awesome you got one!
I’m a long-time pro. I’ve had my R5 since it’s release. By far the best camera I’ve ever owned. So perfect for my work. I completely agree on about every point you made but cannot imagine a better camera for my work. But like you I would be very unlikely to carry it as a walking-around camera. It’s not a camera for a casual hobbyist. When I’m not working I carry a little Fuji. But the Canon fits my hand and my working methods and frankly the autofocus extended my career. And I loved the breaks for the dogs. Another thing we have in common. Good dogs!
@@ForrestMankins When it’s not work but I want ‘better’ than my iPhone I use a Fuji X100V. Bought it when it came out to replace a 100f I never quite fell for. But I love the v. Glad I got it before it became the ‘hot’ or ‘hipster’ camera. I’ve shot a ton with it. Call it my ‘dog walking camera’.
I bought my R5 and laptop MSI Raider and I love how they both have a USB-C port. A bonus is the cable will transfer data or recharge the camera battery.
Thank you for the update Forest! Loved hearing your thoughts on the R5. I use the 1DX III, and love it. I’m waiting to see what Canon launches in the near future 😊thanks again, Forest!
I never ever noticed this, and I shot hundreds of images for work with MS at 250 and below, very interesting to hear and if I still had the cam I would test it!
@@ForrestMankins There are tests published on DPreview although I find it hard to see it on the sample images there. I did test it myself with RF100-500, EF 85mm 1.4 and Tamron SP 35mm 1.4. Same results on all lenses, at 1/400 the difference is minor but still EFSC still a bit better than MS. I mean, don't we all spend $ for maximum quality and sharpness? Don't we prefer a $2,000 lens over a $1,000 if the quality is better and we can afford it? Then we must choose settings that give us the highest IQ. I wish Canon would allow us - like with the Fuji X-H1 that I also own - to set an automatic combination of shutter modes: EFCS until 1/2000, MS faster than 1/2000 up to 1/8000, and ES faster than 1/8000 (yes the Fuji can go to 1/32,000). Canon, do you read this?
Thank you so much! I personally would want an APS-C sensor camera for bird photography and honestly have heard some great things about the Fuji xh2s from Dan Milner on one of his latest videos. I’d say anything apsc is probably gonna be good, if you want to email me I can give better advice. Forrest@forrestmankins.com
Very detailed and down to earth video. Great to hear your perspective. Tbh for the R6 (smaller file sizes, mode dial and slightly better iso performance) might have been the better choice. I just upgraded from the R6 to the R5 and since I do a lot of wildlife, I can now finally crop the way I wanted :)
I have thought about that before - I could make either work but it was just about the trade offs on both sides. Thank you for watching and taking the time to write!
Would love to see you editing handling the R5 files. In the beginning I really struggled with the files and colors but it got so much better. I feel also the camera profiles in Lightroom got so much better over time!?
So you don't choose it when you're just going out shooting or on vacation or something. Why not? Who would want a camera that you wouldn't want to choose when you're ready to go take pictures
Damn i have been follwoing your IG since idk, 2016? and i dont even know that you have a TH-cam channel man. Love your work man and good insightful review on R5 🙌🏻
Coming from Nikon, having the power switch by the shutter button was awesome. After switching to Canon, I have the M-fn button on both of my R3s set to switch the camera into sleep mode. The cameras do not wake up via the proximity sensor. THANK GOD!!! ...But the R6 does... and it's soooo frustrating! I'm sad to hear the R5 does the same thing as the R6. I wish Canon would have a setting that you could choose whether or not to have the proximity sensor wake the camera up.
Hey, thanks for a great review. Im very much in the market for a work horse camera and have been thinking about the R5. Recently there have been a lot of rumours about the R5m2 coming out soon and I'm just thinking if I should lay off buying or go for it. Having had the R5 for 2 years would you upgrade to the mark 2? I know thats difficult because we are working with hypotheticals here but the rumour of it having a back illuminated sensor is particularly interesting to me, as I shoot lot at night but the potential resolution bump is perhaps a bit of a turn off for reasons that you have mentioned about having too much resolution/file size. Or would you say the current R5 will continue to be your camera not matter the upgrade? Im basically investing in a camera for the next 5 years and mirrorless technology progresses so fast that strangely a camera thats two years old almost appears to be outdated - maybe thats just the marketing ploy thats working on me to much. Anyway, any thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Hey! I would say if you have stuff you need to shoot now, then don’t wait on a camera that doesn’t yet exist. The r5 will continue to be a stellar camera on the front edge of IQ and performance for as long as you want to use it. I would buy an R5, and actually if you decide you want to buy an R5 my good buddy who I can personally vouch for is about to sell a several month old setup that has hardly been used at all.
Great review and loving your work! I've been using a 5D4 for years and was becoming a little uninspired by it (not the quality of the images) so I bought a GFX50r to tinker with. I'm thinking of getting an R5 as my workhorse or maybe even looking at the Leica SL2/S and wondered if you had tested them?
Hey! I haven't tested the Leicas - if you're going for a workhorse I would definitely recommend you rent them both to be sure that the Leicas can keep up with the R5. I know I wouldn't want to spend more to feel behind on AF system, but I get the allure of the Leica for sure. I do hope to test one some day. Thanks for the kind words and sorry I can't be of more help!
I have a 5dmarkiii and 60d I will be shifting to R5 but regarding on off button even on my older camera it is on the left but near to the screen not infront left

Still think it has the best af eye for wildlife even better than the A1, for people Sony might have a slight edge, but I don't shoot people much.
Thanks for the video, great to hear a working photographers experience! I have the R5 for a while, I like using it both for personal and work. You ment C- raw, right? It's working very well, it's really hard to tell if there is a difference it's that good. I have noticed a weird thing about the touch AF tracking for people (RF 24-105 f4 and RF 70-200 f2.8) that it at times tends to focus on objects closer than the person. Also when using touch focus to track a person once the camera decided for someone else than I wanted to focus on, it jumps back to the cameras first choice, like sticky on the wrong person. Anyone experienced this?
Nice review bro, i do have questions about the r5 tho , Have you or anyone tried comparing r5 jpegs vs 5d mark 4 , i find the mark 4 has slight better details ( using the same L lens ) cuz i do jpegs outside work , but it has slight better ones in RAW but higher noise at 800ish iso , the other question is what does the focal lenght option do under IS menu ….. thanks

Why don’t you use auto power off mode set to 15 seconds. I never turn the camera off myself. Between shots or moving to new spots, the camera will turn itself off. Tap the shutter button and it will wake up again. No need to get bummed about the power on/off 🍻
