    NB: I used the same RF 50mm f1.2 lens set to f8 for all four Canon bodies in the resolution and noise tests, and the Sony FE 24-70mm f2.8 G Master at 50mm f8 for the A7S III tests. Both are very sharp lenses, at optimal apertures and the crops are from near the middle where the lenses perform at their best.

      I appreciate you taking the time to have a stills shooter review, almost all the reviews are saying sure its great for photography but heres what video it has, in detail. Lol glad to get past that. But I would be extremely interested in the comparison to sonys a7r4, I feel like thats this cameras main competitor.

      I think that's part Canon's fault, they made this camera come with headline video features which unfortunately don't live up to the hype in the real world due to the overheating issues.
      That being said when shooting short clips and stills i'd dare say the R5 may very well be the best camera ever released. Certainly the biggest leap forward for Canon in both stills and videos ever.

    • @adamrickman2461

      Right!? The company I work for is using a single GH5 for both video and photos, but we are wanting to expand and get a dedicated cinema camera and photo camera. Anything that the R5 does for video is nice for a B-Cam, but I'm looking specifically for photography reviews and it is difficult to find. I really appreciate this review.

      I don't even think they know what 10bit 4.2.2 means(what is it?). newbies are watching too many TH-cam videos of people peddling videos when most just take pictures. I mean really a7s3 is awesome on low light, whoopdedoo but 12mp? They can sing its praises all day but not many are going to buy it.

    • @NeXMaX
      @NeXMaX 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@bert671 People who are actually buying either the R5 or the a7Siii would know their needs and decide which is more suited for their purposes.
      I really doubt serious buyers are buying the R5 as a video camera and the a7Siii as a stills camera because those aren't their intended purposes. Canon marketing might have trumpeted the R5's video specs a bit much pre-launch but it doesn't really change the reality that the R5 is really a stills camera first and foremost. Which makes it even more of a shame that its capabilities as a still camera has been left behind in all the video hype and subsequent controversy.
      With all that said, I completely understand why Canon marketed the video features. You can't really hype a camera in 2020 just on stills alone unless it's a highly specialized tool. Given that the R5 is Canon's flagship, it makes sense that they would also want to market the video aspects and bring attention to it. Besides, "12FPS at 45MP" doesn't sound nearly as exciting on marketing material as "8K video".

    • @1barnet1
      @1barnet1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@NeXMaX Honestly 45mp at 12 fps is a headline feature exceeding the legendary status of the D850 WITH THE GRIP and Boost mode on.
      That combined with the best dual pixel AF implementation yet and one of the best high ISO performance of any camera makes this a sports shooters dream.
      I think Canon focussed their marketing wrong given the limitations of their hardware.

    • @NeXMaX
      @NeXMaX 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@1barnet1 For us still shooters, that is most definitely a headline feature alongside the much improved DPAF system.
      Unfortunately, it doesn't have that same universal "cachet" as 8K video. Market a camera with a 12FPS burst at 45MP and you'll get some raised eyebrows, but market a camera with 8K and you'll get not just raised eyebrows but a lot of keen stares.
      So I understand why Canon chose to highlight 8K video recording as a main feature in the prelaunch but with information coming out lately even from Gordon, it seems like it's more of a novelty than something that will see regular use.

    Excellent work, Gordon. You are a reliable source of camera info, a true asset to the industry. I have been out with my r5 four times, and your review is a bit ahead of where I am at (I can't find many flying birds around here in SC right now), but in every other way, your review reflects my experience with the r5. I shot with the 1DX3 about 3 weeks ago and find the r5 to definitely be a better experience for my needs. I think Canon has done an outstanding job with the r5! I would not be more pleased. I do like splitting the photography and videography features into separate review because there is a lot to unpack in a camera like the r5. I do plan to do short-form video with mine once the heat goes away, so I am very interested in hearing your review of the video features. Also, I am wondering just how different the r5 will behave in summer (95deg F here) and in winter (28 deg F in Feb)...I expect a very different set of experiences there. Thank you!

Just really needful and useful information from the stills photography perspective (for which in the first turn this camera has been build actually) after searching long for a sound detailed review through countless overheated screams of inadequate vloggers thirsty only to shoot their beautiful talking heads for hours on and on in SQ 4K... THANK YOU GORDON! This is the review I've been waiting and hoping for since the announcement of the R5. I completely understand everyone's concern about the video aspects, but the R5 in my opinion is a stills camera with great video features. As a stills shooter, I feel the chat around video has completely ruined the rollout for the R5. I pre-ordered mine from BH on day one and STILL have not received my unit yet. Again, I understand the frustration but the release has turned into a PR nightmare for Canon and I believe it's pushed back the delivery of units. There have even been rumors that restocks might not happen until November which I hope are not true. I'm a full-time photographer that sold my gear to upgrade to this system and this delay has made me lose a bit of faith in Canon. BH customer service dodges any questions about delivery dates which has been even more upsetting ( This will be my last BH purchase for sure). Again, Gordan thank you for putting out real helpful information for us still photographers making very pricey decisions IN the middle of the pandemic who hope to still BE photographers on the other side of this. Cheers!

      Personally, I wouldn't really pre-order stuff until they are really ready in stock. Mostly because it means there will be some members of the general public who will use the production units and could give feedback on early use and even potential issues to make a note of that may not be apparent in reviews.
      And yeah, wouldn't advise selling your gear before the new stuff arrives, especially for a hyped new product that arrives in the midst of a pandemic, which wrecks havoc on supply chains, which is probably what is causing the delay.

      @@NeXMaX yeah, I learned my lesson years ago when I ordered two Nikon D800 cameras that had horrendous focusing issues. I could not exchange them because it was months back-ordered. I decided to keep them and have Nikon fix the issue. Worst experience ever and was the reason I left Nikon.
      So for vital work-related stuff like cameras, I will never pre-order.

    23:38 I couldn’t agree more. Great review as always, Gordon, awesome that you focused on stills in this part of the review. I was happy with my EOS R but this R5 is a massive upgrade over that body. I’ve paired it with my 28-70 F2 and the difference is jaw dropping. Autofocus, IBIS, drive speed, usability with the return of the rear wheel and joystick...I’m getting nearly 100% hit rate in events, family gatherings and portraits, even in low light. What strikes me most is how faces and the near eye are caught very reliably, even when turned away or in profile. This is something that never happened on my EOS R (even after the firmware updates). Another thing I tried: shooting the full moon from my hip with my EF 70-300L at 1/125: first shot perfect, no tripod required. I’m very very happy, well worth the (steep) investment. The video, despite all its limitations, is a great bonus. But in terms of stills photography, I think the R5 is the benchmark in the entire Canon EOS system - dslr or mirrorless.

      To be fair, if the camera wasn’t hyped up as some sort of ultimate hybrid camera that’s also ideal for a professional filmmaking setup and it being compared to the 5D2 (which itself was a legend in how much it changed filmmaking on DSLRs), it probably wouldn’t have gotten quite the strong response that it did

    • @lexinad
      @lexinad 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NeXMaX Anyone complaining they can't shoot more than 15/20 minutes of 8K needs to calm down though. And if that is a problem for anyone, then they maybe shouldn't be buying a hybrid stills camera over a specialised video camera.

    • @NeXMaX
      @NeXMaX 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lexinad It's not just 8K but oversampled 4K as well. The time it can record for is also drastically affected if the camera is used at all without recording and it does take a very long time to cool before you get back all your record times. 15-20 minutes on 8K is really the best you can do, with real world results being quite a bit lower.
      With all that said, the non-oversampled 4K, which has no major usability caveat, is about on the level of the EOS R but without an additional crop, that is to say it is absolutely usable for clips or as a supplement if one were to use the same camera for some video shots during something like a wedding and doesn't need absolutely crisp video.
      It really shouldn't have been hyped as an "ultimate filmmaking tool" or the like because with such limitations in place, it's really unsuitable for serious video production and honestly, I'm okay with that given that it is at heart a high resolution stills camera that can do decent quality video on the side, and is what I think the prelaunch should've focused on (with 8K treated as a bonus) rather than going all-ham on 8K when it's pretty clear now that the hardware isn't there yet on cameras that don't focus a heap on video. However, I also fully understand why they chose to market it this way.
      For us who primarily shoot stills, there's seriously a lot to like here and Canon has really addressed a lot of the key criticisms on both the 5D4 and the EOS R such as dynamic range and IBIS whilst really going ham on Dual Pixel. An R5 Mark II would probably do a lot to make the video side better and addressing most of the current flaws, one can hope and is almost certain.

There’s guys in there that did a wedding in Texas and shot 8k. He said when the camera overheated he just switch to 4k30fps and moved on, camera never skip a beat. So those are the experience I’m basing my opinion. Gerold Undone never spoke to any of the strengths of the R5, the r5 has a super35 4k downsampled from 5.1k and has no heat limit and should produce better image quality than a 1 to 1 pixel readout, but never heard about it, never saw a comparison, he only pointed to the strengths of the A7Siii, he never mention that the r5 has better rolling shutter either, why is that? Seems bias right, because if the r5 had worst rolling shutter he would of definitely told everyone on TH-cam, so how can you trust someone bias

The R5 is even greatly better. Also agree about the video. Too many camera reviewers are caught up on the video capability. Considering I ( and I suspect a lot of other photographers) mainly shoot stills with occasional video ( HD is fine , 4 K an added bonus - not sure I’ll ever use 8K) there seems to be little reference to the stills quality. I rarely shoot video and, given my long history (30+ years) with Canon, the stats and specs of the R5 had me straining at the leash to drop my pre-order within a few seconds of the option being made available on B&H. My camera arrived on Friday afternoon and I am very pleased with my decision. I can't wait to get out and really put its through its paces. Thanks for the great overview . . . well done as always!

    Great review on the Stills department. I am also interested in the video side. I am into wildlife/bird photography. This is a "must' upgrade for all Canon users. Clean ISO up to 6400 (in my opinion), outstanding AF, super IBIS that can lift my EF lens to a higher level, 12/20 fps at 45 mp, etc. I am blown away.

    FINALLY! A review that's focused on the stuff I'm most interested in. I'm surprised not so much on the R5's high performance, but the R6 is almost in good in almost every way. The R6’s low light and high ISO capability beat the current R/RP (and by extension my 5D Mark IV) and kick the A7SIII up and down the street. I'm really anxious to get my preordered R6 in my hands now! The R5? Maybe next year, budget permitting. Video? Bonus!!

Having previously watched "high profile" reviewers trying to make the R5 fail by using a 15 year old 500mm f4 + 2X TC +Adapter and shooting video in scorching heat, this is a welcome review. I told the R5 reviewers who focused on video to get a £50,000 cine camera if they want to shoot 30 mins of 8K video ! Great video, keep them coming 👍

      You’re welcome, I have the R5 and I’m curious about Canon’s overheating profiles on the video. We are in the interactive content tools, services and VFX business from hardware software and services side so we have some capability to try to understand the heat profiles. I’m enjoying the camera personally. I also have the Sony A7s3 ordered. Mostly we work regularly with cinema equipment. Again, great job. I’m hoping Canon can address the heat issue. Moving from the Leica SL2 to the R and now the R5 I’m absolutely thrilled I didn’t cancel my pre-order over the neurosis of the overheating ‘concerns’. The IQ, speed and efficiency of handling and user friendliness met and exceeded my expectations. The animal AF was put to good use with all the wildlife we came in contact with over the weekend - stunning speed and beautiful results. I’m going to be using my R5 for professional photographic use and couldn’t be happier.

In some of my upcoming trips temperature may fluctuate between 5-15 degree. In India, some places are very hot likely 40-45 degree census(Especially for big cat photography). Also to note, in video mode it overheats only in few modes (8k,4k24/30HQ, 4k120,and 4k60) but for normal 4k24 (which it's quality is almost identical to other 10bit 4:2:2 cameras and surpasses all 8bit or 10bit 4:2:0 cameras) it doesn't overheat.

    Hi, thank you for analyzing still photography. still photography must be separated from action photography(video) thoroughly. These are two different phenomena. Video is just pop culture, you can not create art with video but only with photography particularly black and white photography. As far as I know, Leica is the only company that has that true perception. nothing will change that true perception no matter how technology is advanced. canon is the company that has photography tradition. • @NeXMaX
    @NeXMaX 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just expanding on my previous comment, this video has really reinforced my opinion that the R5 is really much more of a stills-camera at heart and philosophy, with video being more of a comparatively minor side-job. Disappointing for those who were hyped for all the video features at the pre-launch but this is why you distance yourself from the hype train and set yourself realistic expectations.
    Really, the best way for me to describe the R5 would be a very capable stills camera that's also capable of serviceable/solid 4K video without much usability caveats or superb-quality 4K/native 8K video with usability caveats. For someone like me, who uses his camera 95% of the time for stills, with video sometimes used albeit not as a critical point, the video compromises, whilst disappointing, aren't that big of a factor to my usecase and the stills performance would be more critical in that regard.
    If anything, the entire launch is a good example of knowing when to temper expectations. I've been looking at the pre-launch reaction and I feel that a lot of people were getting a bit too hyped when the video specs were reviewed on a drip-by-drip basis. With all that said, I have been impressed at Canon's improvements to both dynamic range and high ISO, now being pretty much on par with the best of its closest rivals, all whilst having further improved autofocus that brings it up to the likes of Sony (sometimes surpassing them) alongside other improvements like a capable IBIS system. It's really a bit of a shame that a lot of the good stuff got lost in all the hype for 8K video and the subsequent controversy that ensued. If you mostly shoot stills and don't really care much about having top-notch video performance or features, it's easily recommendable.
