What I don't get is that up until about 2 weeks ago, there was basically no such thing as 4K 60p (let alone 120P) on a full frame mirrorless camera. All the Sonys overheated in 4k at only 30 fps (A7III would overheat after about 20 mins according to Daniel Schiffer), and even the cropped Xt4 would overheat after about 14 mins in 4K 60p. Your only real option was the 1D Mark II/III or cinema cameras. Also, up until a couple weeks ago, these same TH-camrs were saying that they didn't like shooting 4K because of large file sizes, slow editing and encoding. We also heard complaints about the fact that the EOS-R had a cropped 4K and people wanted full width 4K. So now, the R5 comes out with 45 of the sharpest MP around (beating the A7RIV in Tony Northrups tests), some of the best lowlight of any camera for photography (again Tony said it was the best, better than the previous champ A7RIV), the best full frame IBIS, the best eye-AF, pushing 12 FPS, AND you can shoot 4K FULL FRAME 24/30p with no heat problems at all no matter how long you shoot. It's been proven you can't see a difference between 720p - 4K (check Matti Happooja's video on this) let alone between the normal 4K and HQ 4K when viewed normally (not zoomed in 300%) even on a 5k monitor (I've tried). BUT, in addition to all this, you have the option of 4K 120 (never before found on a mirrorless camera), the sharpest 4K ever on a mirrorless (HQ mode, shown better than the R6 or A7SIII), or 8K Raw.... internal... something no camera outside of a super expensive cinema camera can offer. Yet, for some reason, people are now saying that the camera may not be good for video because of record limitations due to heat in these specialty modes that nobody had up until 2 weeks ago... and are comparing this camera to a crippled 12 MP, video-centric camera... that doesn't even shoot 8K or any internal raw at all. Weird.
@@mexicanjester Well, if you are searching for paid people, you may feel confortable going to Max Youriev that goes to other youtube channels on the comments section batling and saying that the overheat problems of some a7sIII it may be faulty samples, or you can go to Gerald Undone channel and listening that the a7r4 is a better camera than the R5. I believe that you will feel much better, listening those clowns.
Kian J Canon should of left the high bit rates out and released them as a firmware. Then there wouldn’t be any overheating issues and the camera would of been compared to the proper a7r4, z7, s1r and it would of blown those cameras away, but since canon decided to market as an 8k camera now its getting negative reviews even though it doesn’t over heat on the same bit rates as it’s competitors, people are stuck on the overheating high bit rates even though its’ the only camera that offer it. It’s like Canon offfers the best high end photography camera currently on the market but it’s getting bash for the video specs that it’s straight competitors don’t offer, Canon damn if you do, damn if you don’t

I used to hear people complain that Canon artificially limited it's camera video. They finally listen, and everyone complains they overheat. It's a camera with video capabilities that have some competition for the other cameras in it's league. It is not a RED video camera, it's a replacement for the 5D series DSLR camera. Everybody knew that heat was going to be an issue, we have been hearing that since the day the video capabilities were first discussed. I really was hoping for a video talking about how it worked as a camera, you normally talk about how the camera photo resolution is. And when I finally get your review it's "great", and everyone will be pleased, but it overheats! I need to know if it's going to be soft in details like other Canon mirrorless cameras!

Got my R5 today. I’m mostly a photographer who does documentary video work. I shot 4k24 HD and 4k24 and there really wasn’t enough of a difference to justify leaving it in HD mode. With that, there are no record limits. If I do slow mo, it’s mostly 30-60 second clips that will expand in the final video. I shot for four hours on a single battery (off/on photo and video) and never got an overheat warning and ended up with beautiful footage. The photos are out of this world. Low light is crazy good. It’ll be a few days before I can try some astrophotography shots, but I’m super excited about that, too. I’m very pleased with my purchase.
As a photographer who only rarely does video, this camera seems really harmed by being marketed primarily for that 8k feature. I mean it’s pretty much a compact 1dxiii with virtually all the speed and twice the resolution - (exciting that no reviewers are grumbling about its lowlight performance for all those pixels). And while it’s expensive for a 5D series it’s cheaper than a 1dxiii too.
Yep it’s a baby 1dxm3, without the data redundancy or reliability to use on professional sets. Hence why it’s cheaper. It’s a killer camera though and will be an amazing camera for the right people.
Not necessarily.... I think it's fantastic for people that primarily use a camera for taking photos, and on occasion wanna shoot some short vids. The fact that the video is outta this world seals the deal for me, I'm not shooting hour long interviews.
@@MrClarkeGaber yes agree. I should say the camera isn't harmed at all - it's great. It's more that the marketing emphasis has caused unnecessary confusion when the actual product looks very compelling.
The Canon R5 Brilliant photo camera Limited high spec Video camera .......but a great heating device for campers ...heat the room and cooks some eggs 🍳 😅
Great refiew guys! Your experiences are 100% consistent with mine. Something you didn't mention is battery life - did y'all have any issues with it? I've run out of battery every single time I've taken it out for a day of shooting, but I can't easily quantify it. It's a pretty easy fix - carry extra batteries - but I've become accustomed to cameras (even mirrorless) just lasting all day. I'm guessing that sophisticated focusing system is using a bunch of power.
A friend was telling me he was hitting over 1000 shots with old LP-E6N batteries with his R5 yesterday. Even with me R, I've hit 2400 shots even though Canon says 350.
Hey T&C one of my FAVORITE channels!!! You guys have helped me so much over the years. Off topic, but could you please compare R6 and a7sIII noise performance and IQ throughout the range. Your last test makes me want to get the R6 over the a7sIII, but I'm not sure about that. Everyone is quoting you as saying the R6 is better than a7sIII in low light. Is that true?
@@darkerarts I think the CIPA rating may be measured using mechanical shutter. I got 600+ shots with my Z6 and battery shows 70% left. I was shooting with electronic shutter.
@@mlai2546 that is indeed how they test because it is the most consistent with previous SLRs. Using electronic 1st curtain or all electronic provides quite a lot if improvememt by not requiring the movement of the mechanical shutter
Excellent video. I got my R5 yesterday and I experienced similar results. Being mainly a photographer this camera is amazing. I hope that some firmware will solve overheating since the camera never feels hot when the warning appears. But maybe it will be a recall if the thermo-sensor is the culprit here
that's part of the problem. the camera seals the heat inside, hence why takes 2 hours to "cool down" back to get the same recording times as a fresh cold one. Sony uses the body/shell as a heatsink, so even on modes where it can potentially overheat (like on top of a black plastic trampoline at 30+C ), the camera was ready to film another 30min after 2-3 min cooling down by a fan.
@@johnsysays It has not for those video settings. Anything 4K 30 FPS or less does not overheat but anything above that does albeit a bit longer recording before it overheats. 1080P even at 120 FPS does not overheat. And the best finding of all is how to get rid of the false overheat when doing photography. For some reason, if you memorize an overheating mode on the video C3 setting, then you will get false warnings of overheating even if all you are doing is taking photos. That was the part that annoyed me the most as I am not much of a video person. I plan to use it this year in 4K 30 FPS and see how it goes. The other good new is that if you are more of a video than photo then the R5C is the camera for you as that one does not ever overheat and they kept the price extremely reasonable. Hope this helps answer your question
I am from India and when I switch on my air condition in my room I keep it at 27 degrees celcius and I have to take a thin blanket because it's cold for me.
My guess is that run times in the r5 don’t depend much on ambient temp, and it’s the sensor or processor that overheat internally, hence the super long cool down times.
@@kiwimike2330 Probably true up to a point mate , but being already at a warmish ambient temperature probably will not help its use case , no doubt this camera will be more suited to cooler regions or just a lighter load use case in warmer climates or following winter around .

@@therealjimmy5411 Peter is a Canon ambassador after all. And I do enjoy biased reviews from people whom I enjoy listening to, like Peter on Canon, and James Popsys on Panasonic Lumix.
This is great stuff! Serious food for thought here. I'm an old, archaic guy (60), and I've been happily in the DLSR camp for years. I've still got my original 300D, which I've had for 20 years, and is too much of an old friend to get rid of. Over the years, I've added a 20D, a 7D Mk II, and finally a 1DX Mk III. I'd never really worried about moving to mirrorless, even if DSLRs are officially "obsolete" now. However, I find that I've been giving some thought to picking up an R5. With the exception of a soon-to-come Sigma 100-600C, and a Tokina 19-35 that I've had for years, all of my lenses are Canon EF or EF-S, so the ability to use an EF-RF adapter is a powerful incentive. I don't shoot video at all, only stills, so the overheating issues I've read about really wouldn't apply. I don't know, it's kind of a coin flip. I could add a used 5D Mk IV to my bag, but that would be redundant with the 1DX, even if the former has slightly higher resolution in terms of MPs. Christmas is coming…
I'm going to preface this by saying that I'm a multi-system shooter (Canon, Sony, m43). I received my R5 a couple days ago, and have an A7SIII preordered for use as a dedicated video body. I think that if your main use is video then the A7SIII is the best purely video-optimized tool out there, surpassing even the Panasonics in that respect. IMO 8K doesn't really add much value for most people shopping for hybrid bodies (real 8K workflows seem to involve Red Ranger 8KVVs and the like). With that said I love the total package of features in the R5, and believe that the video tools are enough for my uses, though I use a Ninja V most of the time anyway, which may skew my assessment of the 4KHQ mode a bit. Even when I record internally I use the Ninja as a monitor for focus/waveforms/etc. One thing that I don't think gets mentioned enough: The R5 also has 1.6x cropped 4K24/30/60 modes that are oversampled from 5.1K (basically the EOS R's crop, but with oversampling and 60 fps). The IQ is slightly worse than the 4KHQ mode but a lot better than the line-skipped ones. I expect that it's equivalent to the R6's 5.1K oversampled modes, modulo the crop of course. I took my R5 outside in bright sunlight in 38C weather the other day, attached my trusty Sigma 18-35/1.8, and shot cropped/oversampled 4K30 with internal recording for over an hour (stopping/restarting at 29:59, of course). No problem. Canon's specifications also say that that mode does not overheat. In that respect it's a lot like the A7R[234] - you can either have a limited 4K FF mode, or a really good oversampled crop mode.
If I was going to use this camera for video, just being an enthusiast. Id mostly use 4k24 or 1080. I'm primarily a stills shooter, all the photography tech in the R5 does it for me! Ill buy one in the future.
With the announcement Canon has also indicated the times from when and under which conditions overheating can occur. I think this is fair. There is no reason to be surprised that the camera switches off under certain conditions. I wish other camera manufacturers would publish similar official numbers too.
The normal 4k (non-overheating) quality is actually pretty great...miles ahead of any previous Canon DSLR/mirrorless footage. The chart example vs the "HQ" mode must've been at 200%? Very few could notice the difference without a zoomed in side by side. I'm also surprised there was no mention of the 5.1k oversampled 4k you get in crop mode (at 24p, again no overheating). You guys are pretty great most of the time, but this review seems guilty of the youtuber trend of "let's put this into the mode that overheats THEN say it can't be used for serious video work." It's nonsense. I'm glad Canon gave us these modes with limitation instead of not at all.
@@klackon1 Because if they hadn't everyone would have slated it for having "4 year old technology, come on Canon, catch up!!". They've tried to be innovative and included something new that no one else in this form factor offers but with limitations, and now they're being slated for that. It just seems that Canon are damned if they do, damned if they don't!
@@gamerjack5612 not sure if you're joking, but the R5/6 will be annoying as hell to use in actual high temperatures. Cool down times will be terrifying.
Yeah that color reproduction is the reason why I will always stick with canon, I had the a7 mark 1 for a while (dont get me wrong, nice and compact with good dynamic range), but the colors were just dull, cold and uninspiring. Oh and the screens on sonys are horrible
Chris, Jordan, an excellent review as always. I am not into video. I wish Canon makes an EOS R5 with no video, just for still photography. I don't want to pay nearly $4000 for 8K video that I will never use.
Then go and buy a cheaper camera. Would you say the same thing about the 5D II, 5D III, and 5D IV? This is effectively that. It is a photo camera with video functionality and the price is perfectly reasonable for what it is - the best DSLM on the market today.
I'm not a Cannon shooter myself but you gotta give it to them for pushing the boundaries. Cannon should've marketed this more for the photographers. Seems like they've really hit a home run on that front.

Wow! Really excited about the R5. It's still winter in OZ and my finger tips are cracking for shooting sunrise and riding my mountain bike to sunrise locations early morning. With r5, I could turn on the 8k video to help warm my hands in those cold winter mornings when the temp dropped to 2 C. :) My only complain is I would be paying that extra premium for the '8k-hand-warming-feature'. I could not care less about the video function of this camera.
Not fazed by the overheating. We shoot weddings and this will be perfect camera for our work with regards to low light shooting, ibis, dynamic range and finally all the new lovely RF glass
As a stills photographer, this video is very helpful. I would really LOVE to see a video where you compared the image quality, sharpness and Human/Animal Eye AF to the SONY A7R IV which seems to be the closest competitor from the photography perspective
Interestingly, DSI Pictures has some AMAZING video up on his channel taken in 8K (and 4K HQ). He shot all day long in 8K and didn't get any heat warnings... he lives in Australia.
I have to say the R6 video (most of the video we see in the review) looks outstanding. Probably the best color and some of the finest detail I've seen on a DPReview video review.
I'm up for a stills comparison between the R5 and A7R4. A7R4 with the 135mm F/1.8 and R5 with the RF 85mm F/1.2. Which can produce the most detailed attractive stills?
Great to know the photo department is outstanding. When I see those photos especially at ISO 6400, I am sold. I shoot bird/wildlife and seldom use ISO 6400 anyway. External video recording minimizing heat is also good to know. Thanks for the review.
That tune in the beginning... it's the same one where Jordan took a dip in the sea in the EM1III review. So that's DPReview's go-to tune when sexy things keep cool
Great video. Given the reservations you guys have about the video side of EOS R5, what would you say is single the most compelling reason to upgrade from EOS R to this camera, *if any*?
No dual-mic input... Ok, well, they have these brand-new just invented wireless mics that have two transmitters and a receiver that allows two mics to connect to a single mic input through the receiver... Boom - two people recorded on a single mic input. Jordan didn't mention that along with the standard 4k (non-oversampled) video you have available, to avoid overheating, the APS-C crop-mode and although you introduce a 1.6x crop (less than the EOS R) it does give you oversampled 4k from 5.1K video for more of that HQ look. Thanks for talking about rolling-shutter. Some other reviewers I think assumed the R5 would have it because other Canon sensors do and stated the R5 "has plenty of it!" Thanks for the video. Appreciate all the insights! I do hope Canon improves on the things through firmware like the Log formats, 29:59 limit, overheating controls (I think some of the issue is how conservative they are), heat management when externally recording, FHD 120p, and some lower bandwidth codecs if you want to balance recording space and quality a little more.
I completely agree. Why noone has tested the APS-C beyond me! They're acting like it's not there and that's a serious disservice the TH-cam community generally is offering here IMO. Heck, I'm sure Canon can even release a 5k Raw feature when in APS-C mode through firmware. That is what the sensor is reading out of course.
Great review, saw one pro photographer say that when overheating happened his camera was really still cool, so wondered if the warning is set very conservatively
me too, so I asked Gerald Undone about that and he said the camera does feel warm to the touch when overheat warning appears. Maybe some have colder hands than others? 🤔
I think what's happening is that the plastic case of the camera acts like a blanket, keeping all that 8K processing waste heat inside the camera, which is why the cooldown times are so long. In contrast, the Fuji X-T4 can overheat in its highest spec video modes-but it also cools right down again and is totally usable in 10 minutes, because it's got all those metal surfaces to sink the heat to the outside. I've never been able to get my X-H1 to overheat.
I have an R5 and if you record 8k or 4k hq non stop, the back will get a little warm, but not too much. Then that goes away quickly, but you get a overheat warning and the camera will be cold to the touch. Basically, in an hour window, you can record around 35min of video until it needs hours to fully reset.
aerob1033 Even with 2, you still have to wait for each to cool down. It’s a shame really because if the 4K video didn’t have overheating, it would be a workable camera.
speaking of stills this is a great camera, but it's packed maybe of video features which increase the price compared to a competition where the Z7, S1R and even A7 RIV cost 1000€ less (not considering A7 iii with similar resolution at 2000€ discount). That's the real problem. It was better to create a specific video camera for video like the A7Siii with a better body for heat dissipation and heavy video use, every brand do it now (like Panasonic with S1H for example) so you can have a great still camera balanced in price compared to the competition., for photographers only. R5 is a great still camera but way too expensive compared to direct competition (stills) and not so suitable for heavy video use compared to the competition (ok, it's 8K, but you have to look at operability and result, not just specs, where A7s III is the example).
@@nerdMike the problem is the vast majority of buyers (me included) don't want a pure photo camera. Video is becoming more and more integral to various photography workloads. Having some video capability these days is a must, and will only increase going forward. Camera companies spend millions on market research. They know exactly what will sell.
@@nerdMike Canon buyers like Apple buyers or Starbugs customers always tolerated the massive 'douche tax' with almost every camera body in the recent years. That makes them feel elite, I guess. I see a bigger problem in the limited and also way too expensive lenses. With Sony there are at least reasonable prized slow or third party lenses from Sigma and Tamron as well as from China. Most of the customers won't be professionals but enthusiasts, which are not in the most urgent need of a 2.8 Zoom or a 1.2 prime.
Hi all, u referred to big dynamic range, and Gerald Undone, in this video, interestingly he found in his DNrange studio test that it’s not that good compared to its competition. Would be interesting to se if ur test shows any different. If so....good and bad examples/versions of camera..I guess internet (as with old Sony cameras) will dig up good and bad
Few questions please: 1. Where can I find the video stills comparison as shown in this video? Are the video stills zoomed in at 100% or 200%? 2. Is the 4k24 SQ that bad? Tony Northrup said it was garbage and Jordan said it was bad. However Armando Ferreira seemed ok with it. Of course 4k24 SQ is worse than 4k24 HQ but how is it compared to other cameras’ 4k24 SQ (or non oversampled 4k)? 3. How’s the battery life?
With all that being said I think im happy with my Z7, I don't shoot video or sports so for a lot less money the files are probably pretty comparable if not a touch better on the Z7 but on the whole not noticeable. Wish Nikon would bring out some more lenses though that is starting to annoy me a touch.
For those who are not into video stuff, I think Nikon Z series are probably the best choice. Great ergonomics and build quality, great lenses, amazing files. I only wish the investment for switching from DSLR to ML wasn't so heavy. By now I stay with my D700/750 combo, they still give me beautiful images.
Coming from D850 & the Z7/Z6 myself.. the R5 blows the Z7 out of the water.. the AF is super fast and always accurate (unlike my Z7 shots 50% out if focus in any moving subject kinda shoot such as portraits etc..) the z7 has better dynamic range but that’s about it.. i was tired of waiting for exciting lenses or even a any pro lens longer than 85mm (specially 70-200). IBIS is much much better on R5 and just the handling/grip is much more comfy. Overall the R5 is a superior camera and worth every penny unlike the Z7 release price of $3400.. the Z7 is worth $2500 max. Still got great shots with Nikon and will always remember my D850 but it’s time to move on for better system
Moe Alyasini I shoot purely landscapes, I’ve played with the Canon raw files. They don’t blow me away. Similar to Nikon if anything a bit less dynamic range and sharpness when zoomed right in maybe the AA filter not sure. It’s fine for me I have it already it works. Don’t get stuck on the endless cycle of GAS all the other systems will catch up and exceed Canon then Canon will do the same again. Always has been always will be the case. Stay calm.
tallaganda83 a landscape photographer is the least interested in features such as Reliable Auto focus or IBIS! when 50% of your photos are out of focus what good is dynamic range?? Do I miss the dynamic range sometimes ? Sure but not with R5 cuz it’s got comparable dynamic range (tip: go watch the newest comparison Toni did with sony a7r4 etc.. you will see it’s actually on par. So that gap you are talking about is gone and i am not sure what raw files you tried !?) I was a Nikon shooter for many years.. dont you think i would have stayed with Nikon and kept 10s of thousands of dollars in gear and lenses ? I bought the Eos R For fun and realized that even that mediocre camera had better AF than Nikon’s “pro” z7 so I made the decision knowing that they’re going to come up with a pro body just like the R5 now. Let’s not be fan boys and give credit when it’s due man! I am a paid portrait and fashion photographer and I cant afford having issues with my Af or not have a pro glass collection “70-200 f2.8” etc.. Nikon is behind just like Sony felt behind when the R5 came out so they came out with a great “video only” camera and soon you will see the release of the a7 mark4 to keep people from moving to canon
Moe Alyasini Are you serious? The autofocus isn’t that bad holy crap😂 I focus stack in camera anyway so I’m definitely not missing focus. Half the time I just manual focus using peaking or focus assist anyway. The ibis is fine on the Z7 too. There is not a noticeable difference. Obviously you love your new toy but just go and shoot the bloody thing and get off TH-cam.
These days, summers in the Philippines goes up to 40 celsius. Normal temps in rainy season is around 27~28. Really consider the overheating issues if you're living in a tropical country.
Camera fails during torture test designed to make camera overheat, is not an overheating problem. When cameras overheat indoors in air conditioning during regular use, then that’s an overheating problem.
Last fall I sold my huge Nikon kit, D5 and 9 prime fast lenses and 3 speedlights and one zoom: 200-500, all of it, gone on eBay in a few weeks. I bought a Sony A7R4, 24 mm f/1.4 GM, 85 f/1.4 GM + 135 f/1.8 GM. Profoto A1X flash, love, RRS plate for camera, etc. etc. Now I can pretty much carry the whole kit and kaboodle, where with Nikon, much of the kit stayed at home. Now, I loved my D5. But when I bought that camera, I did have my finger in the wind, and I looked at Sony, not really knowing the acronyms on various bits of glass, and I don't think any GM lenses at that point, and not my go-to primes. So I bought the D5. (Prior cameras: D200, D700, Df) Last fall when the A7R4 was announced, I followed the industry, and decided I could not hold onto my Nikon gear much longer. Sony now had the glass I wanted. Canon, same deal. Canon, you don't have the glass. The only glass I see is that RF 85 f/1.2. Give me RF 24 f/1.2 Give me RF 135 f/1.2 and I will sell my teeth to move to Canon. I have zero interest in zoom lenses. I'm a prime shooter.
Agree with all points made here, and also previously published by Tony Northrup, Gerald Undone and Armando Ferreira and others. I can confirm the overheating with a production R5 in hand (arrived yesterday). In fact, shooting photos in, admittedly a hot environment (backyard and indoors, 36C), made the body warm to the touch. This is a pet peeve of mine, I have never had this happen to any Canon body I’ve ever owned. Video recording was cut back significantly, I did not bother to max it out because I wanted to use the camera and not lose it for 30 minutes. The photo capabilities however are amazing, an even greater improvement than expected from my EOS R. Lovely quiet mechanical and fast shutter, much improved AF (machine learning/AI is not just a marketing term), much improved dynamic range and great sharpness and Canon colors. I put my 28-70 F2 on this and I don’t need anything else. The IBIS unlocks that lens and my entire EF non-IS gear and enables many more use cases. TLDR? If you need video, do NOT get the R5 at this time. It is not useful in a production environment - Jordan’s comments and Armando Ferreira’s video demonstrate this very clearly. Wait until the purported adapter fix that will release later this year, or switch to Sony and enjoy the A7R4 for stills and the very focused and excellent A7S3 for video. The Panasonic SH1 is also great, but autofocus cripples that system.
They nail it at the end. For me, video is an occasional thing. However, being able to capture the occasional sunset, Ken Burns "National Parks" style has a lot of appeal. I just don't see myself ever shooting more than a few minutes at a time. Granted, I mostly shoot with a Sigma DP2M, so I'm used to working around my tools.
reem 94 that’s because he was using the h264 codec all the other reviewers haven’t had problems with it over heating and the cool down rate for you to shoot again is super short compared to canon but yeah the other codecs people weren’t having over heating problems what so ever.
Canon has put out a wonderful high-resolution small camera with excellent weather sealing and no internal fan. Obviously, they had the needs and preferences of the professional still photographer foremost in mind, at the expense of the professional videographer. With this trade-off in mind, it appears they've released a state-of-the-art still camera with a nod the videographic community. Why professional videographer's are so irritated with RF5/RF6 release, mystifies me. The R5/R6 isn't the camera for them. I can live with that.
Guys, Obviously no one heard the sarcasm in his voice about the 27° comment o.o he even followed up with saying "what is that, like 200 something degrees Fahrenheit?".
Having over an hour of time with an atamos definitely makes the camera useful to pro film making. The rig won’t be as ultimately small as some might want, but it will still be smaller and cheaper than a c500 cinema camera. You can never have everything you want. The R5 has high mp for limited internal 8k, high frame rate 4K, and phenomenal photos, and the a7siii has phenomenal 4K capabilities, but exceedingly limited photography purposes. You have to take the good with the bad. Nothing is yet perfect.
I agree (on theory for me now) with your verdict that r5 is basically a very good photography camera. But this brings me this question then: Since there are lots of good photography cameras available and most probably many who bother to watch this video has some in their possession already, is it that good in photography which makes it worth to RE-invest (again...)??? My humble impression (as a 7r3 owner with lots of Canon lens) it is NOT... Thanks again for another decent review.🖖
IBIS, compatibility with your current Canon lens, ergonomics, touch screen menus that are easy to navigate, incredible autofocusing. etc. If your already got the glass then it's definitely should be a consideration.
David Ramos At least on my behalf; It is an incremental increase in performance which is definitely not worth for me to spend approximately 2500 $ again! I’m tired of spending way too much for these “performance increases”. Since I’m not trying to catch the eye ball of a tiger in India, I’m cool with 7r3 as now. But a 7r5 with a fully articulated screen, 4k 60 p, more codec choices, (10 bit, 4-2-2) and updated menus may tempt me in the future🙈🖖
Fuat DOMANIC I rented the A7r4 and did not like to navigate the menus system because it took too much time. It does not have a touch screen. That’s a real advantage of the Canon.
8K in R5 is a step forward for mirrorless hybrid. You can get it and work around its limitations to produce a great image. Or you can get a7s3 which still won't have 8K and not nearly as good a photo camera as r5. If you need FF 8K internal RAW and can't invest in a RED or bigger cameras, R5 is a killer deal honestly. Just learn to work around its limitations and stop cribbing. You are not going to record interviews and review vlogs on 8K.
@@andrescarrasco1248 have you used the camera? Or you are just taking someone's words? You want to shoot 8K seamlessly for hours, buy a Red Helium. 8-10 minutes of 8K FF internal RAW is good enough to shoot a take, And move on to next.
@@bosstowndynamics5488 R5 is an extremely positive step in FF hybrid segment and it will find its users. At this time, budget filmmakers have moved on to Blackmagic or Canon c300s or sony f7 etc. This is the first camera that can give them a serious competition and not just a B Cam. Even if its recording 10 minutes of 8K in a go.
@@DavCro exactly my point is. If you are shooting more than few minutes of 8K RAW internally, you are doing something wrong. This is a niche feature mostly for cinema purposes. And if the 8K quality on R5 is good enough, this is going to be a killer.
@@bosstowndynamics5488 big productions don't shoot on R5 and A7 and S1... Thry have cinema cameras. Most Small productions now rent 2nd tier cinema cameras such as c300 or F7 or Red. This camera does not overheats in normal 4K unless you are shooting 120 fps or hq. At that rate any small camera will overheat including the a7s3 which is reportedly getting overheated faster than R5! We have a7s2 at our facility and it overheats outdoors as well and limited color depth on files. We work around it. The problem with R5 is that it offers so much right now that its user base isn't defined. Who this camera is for? I guess with time it will find its base and work seamlessly. But at this price point, in a small hybrid body, any camera will overheat at certain bit rate. Its not so much an issue as it is the nature of the small hybrid mirrorless body.
Very helpful review. As a stills camera for wedding/event photographers, the R5 will really shine. As a primary video camera with overheating issues and a 30-minute record limit, the R5 presents a real challenge for shooting a wedding ceremony or reception or any other longer event, especially outside. If Canon had marketed it as a stills camera instead of the ultimate 8K video camera, I don't think they would have had much backlash. The old rule, under promise and overdeliver, applies here.
Hey Chris I hope you see this message, what would be the first lens you would get for the R5? Im only interested in the holy trinity, though maybe the 50 as well, but budget will allow one lens for now. So 17-35, 28-70, 70-200 which would be your first RF pick ? All other viewed I welcome your opinion. I want to specialize in outdoor portraits.
Judging by the demand for this camera the overheating issue doesn’t appear to have put too many people off from buying it. I wish it had, my pre order remains in a long queue, with talk of no more deliveries until November. Let’s hope that’s not true. I’m very excited to get my hands on it and use the RF glass along with a 45mp sensor. I’m a bit old fashioned mind, I take photos and haven’t even ordered a CF express card as yet, so won’t be worrying about any overheating.
Felt like a lot of cheap shots about overheating. Also, I don't recall Canon hyping this as "The Ultimate 8K Production Tool." They hyped it as a great professional camera, and oh by the way, it's got 8K in it also. If you're doing extensive 8K/4K120 work, you're going to get a proper cine camera, and maybe use this as a B cam. You act so disappointed in it, but you're also judging it as a cine cam when it's probably more accurate to judge it as a stills / basic video camera that also tacked on a few advanced video features just for fun.
Literally their second press release! www.canon-europe.com/press-centre/press-releases/2020/04/canon-eos-r5-specs-revealed/ They’ve been heavily leading with the 8k as their headline feature, right up until their “heat limited” announcement after launch.
Photography for business , so the r5 seems great. But travelling I do want to make personal videos and I can't yet tell whether the fact I'd be planning to switch from photos to video would make this camera inappropriate for me. The idea of shooting photos for an hour and intermittently switching to video would show me a record limit time seems a little crazy...

As as Pom I don't expect any overheating 🤣
Weird.
How much did Canon pay you to write this? Are they hiring other shills right now? I could really use the cash.
@SwitchRich damn it, so easy to forget the southerners.
@SwitchRich Yeh its Winter in Australia it was a chilly 19C in Sydney today. So cold :|

@@cbflazaro Yawn!
Hahah true brother, often people in my house complain when the AC is at 22°C that it's too cold. 35°C is an average here.
My guess is that run times in the r5 don’t depend much on ambient temp, and it’s the sensor or processor that overheat internally, hence the super long cool down times.

Guys, Peter McCanon is VERY unbiased! I mean Mckinnon.
Totally agree.

What! With all those wind turbines you Germans put up in pristine Norwegian nature, I thought they were blowing enough cold air down to you: christinafjeldavlino.home.blog/2020/07/19/gegenwind-norwegen/
It's effectively a 5D, what makes you think they would price it any lower? It's perfectly affordable for everyone who needs it.
How does one actually get an R5? I'm still waiting on my multiple orders from the beginning of august.
Simple. Cancel your orders. Go to the bank, take out a $50,000 loan and head down to your local Audi dealer.
I'm so glad i watched this, I was going to buy it for the video aspect but not now. Thank you for being honest.
in a few month, you can use R5 as long as you want.
Ya... as a paperweight
Nope, the insides are insulated ... so the heat will stay inside. :D

As a stills photographer, this video is very helpful. I would really LOVE to see a video where you compared the image quality, sharpness and Human/Animal Eye AF to the SONY A7R IV which seems to be the closest competitor from the photography perspective
I’m also waiting for the same to make a decision b/w these two. Don’t care about video
Jared Polin already has a couple of test showing how fast in can track an Human/Animal. He is stating that is even faster than the A9.

Jordan - it was totally worth it, at least from a viewer’s perspective.
Great to know the photo department is outstanding. When I see those photos especially at ISO 6400, I am sold. I shoot bird/wildlife and seldom use ISO 6400 anyway. External video recording minimizing heat is also good to know. Thanks for the review.
Yay on the focus transition speed can be adjusted. The Canon EOS R couldn’t right?
That tune in the beginning... it's the same one where Jordan took a dip in the sea in the EM1III review.
So that's DPReview's go-to tune when sexy things keep cool
Great video guys... love the unbiased reviews.
Great video. Given the reservations you guys have about the video side of EOS R5, what would you say is single the most compelling reason to upgrade from EOS R to this camera, *if any*?
That at least it's competitive with the rest of the industry on the specs sheet. The EOS R isn't even anywhere nearby.
the photos, autofocus, ibis
This camera is a massive upgrade over the R in every single way.
Single reason to Upgrade? Easy. It has a joystick. To be honest you Can get this from other Systems for a lot less money.
In terms of video, you can consider the R5 a non-cropped 4K EOS R.
Some other reviewers I think assumed the R5 would have it because other Canon sensors do and stated the R5 "has plenty of it!"
Thanks for the video.
@DPReview I'm concerned with evf blackout and lag while tracking a bird in flight. Did you test this and if so what did you find?
There is no evf lag in electronic shutter at 20 frames. I got my R5 a day early and I posted video to Facebook showing how fast the shutter is.
@@pianofinger Through the viewfinder at 12fps is what I'm talking about :)
Tim C I just tested it for you. No blackout at all
@@pianofinger Awesome and thank you!
I found a solution to DOUBLING your run time on an R5!
...buy 2
You joke, but buying two of these would still be a great price compared to buying a single 8k RAW camera from a competing (video-centric) brand.
Just get ice and wrap around the camera. Or carry a fridge with you.
give me some dollars to get them !!!
aerob1033 Even with 2, you still have to wait for each to cool down. It’s a shame really because if the 4K video didn’t have overheating, it would be a workable camera.
Fantastic. Thanks fellas. Been waiting for someone to comment on the EF IS + IBIS combination.
Looks like Canon finally made the stills-only camera that people were begging for.
speaking of stills this is a great camera, but it's packed maybe of video features which increase the price compared to a competition where the Z7, S1R and even A7 RIV cost 1000€ less (not considering A7 iii with similar resolution at 2000€ discount).

Few questions please:
Tony did NOT say it was garbage. He just indicated it was not as sharp zoomed in. Big difference.

@@kiwimike2330 it is. Check other channels, A7S3 will overheat as well
@@kiwimike2330 He's right about the Sony overheating. At least one of my Panasonic G series can overheat too, I think 4K50/60 does it.
Camera fails during torture test designed to make camera overheat, is not an overheating problem. When cameras overheat indoors in air conditioning during regular use, then that’s an overheating problem.
@@kiwimike2330 Sony claim A7S3 never overheats. And now it has proven wrong. Canon is at least be honest about it.
27 is the winter temperature in Dubai 😆
My thermostat is set at 28C....

Canon has put out a wonderful high-resolution small camera with excellent weather sealing and no internal fan. With this trade-off in mind, it appears they've released a state-of-the-art still camera with a nod the videographic community.
@5:00 is a masterpiece
I agree (on theory for me now) with your verdict that r5 is basically a very good photography camera.
But this brings me this question then:
Since there are lots of good photography cameras available and most probably many who bother to watch this video has some in their possession already,
is it that good in photography which makes it worth to RE-invest (again...)???
It's not the tool, it's the professional, but at the same time if you are a professional you can't have a tool that limits you that bad
For me a hybrid shooter the Canon EOS R5 is still worth purchasing.
