perhaps continuous AF was on ? That was the 1st thing I turned off in my R6.. keeps the lenses moving in their focus motors and significantly causes battery drain.
Are you kidding I love the R5's design; big black piece of tech, no frills, just ergonomics and raw technology. It's just absolute power. You can feel yourself go super Saiyan the moment you pick one up..
I have no problem with my R5 boring black brick camera ... Looks like every other boring black camera - a plus once we can travel again and I am walking through some dodgy neighborhoods.
I agree - and who needs a fashion accessory that dates. If a manufacturer does go down that marketing track they might be tempted to offer limited edition 'collectibles'... lets not stumble into that rabbit hole.
The Nikon Z series are, imo, nicer looking cameras that still stay quite nondescript and functional. I feel like ANY camera in a dodgy neighbourhood is a problem, I'd shoot raw files on my phone in that case.
Chelsea, I was having the same problem with partially charged batteries dyeing quickly. I turned "ON" Airplane mode. That really helped me out on the battery all around. Thanks for the video.
I've had that problem with the SD Cards (Song Tough and Sandisk Extreme Pro Cards) on both the R5 and R6, doesn't happen all the time, but I agree, it fixes once I reformat the card. Some issue there. I also have a C70 Cinema camera that takes SD cards and when I stick it into that camera, I never get an issue with the same cards. So it's definitely a glitch on the R5/R6 software, not actual hardware.
R6. Identical problem! Using Lexar Professional 128GB V60 ii U3 1667x 250MB/s. I’ve formatted and re-formatted in-camera; makes no difference. Like to think Canon are going to provide a fix, very soon.
Been talking to Canon for a week and they insist they don’t know why freeze-ups occur. For what it's worth I use Sony Tough cards and have 2,000 actuations on my R5 in the last eight months.
In the old days black and silver camera bodies were common. All black bodies were the top of the line pro bodies. It was a status symbol. It was desirable. I think the manufactures are still of the same mindset.
It's not just manufacturers who think that way, sadly. I gave up using Fuji for pro work because I had a handful of (entirely separate) clients make comments to the effect of not trusting my work if I was using a camera that didn't look 'professional' i.e. a big all-black brick. In one case a client on location literally said "oh... is _that_ your camera? Really?" to my face when I pulled out a silver X-T3 and X100F, continued to sneer for the entire time, and then I later learnt they had hired another photographer (who happens to be my friend, which the client didn't know) to reshoot the same job _before they'd even seen my photos_ and apparently spent several minutes of the reshoot complaining about me and my 'hipster' 'amateur' gear. Yes, that particular client was an asshole and yes the others weren't much better, but still the end result was that the nice-looking, stylish, silver cameras cost me work. Never had that trouble when I shot with Canon or Sony before then. Didn't have that problem when I used the all-black chunky Fuji X-H1. Never had that problem since switching back to Canon.
Black & Silver //= Two Tone Olympus as Limited Editions More Rare Costing More Example the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II Advertised as Silver,, IS Actually the Silver & Black and Only 2000 Were Released Worldwide, & Best Looking Camera, Any Of Olympus Models of the So Call Silver always look the nicest Classy looking, :-)
HACK YOUR CAMERA FOR ALMOST UNLIMITED RUN TIME. If you get a battery charger with USB-C with PD (Power Direct) you can charge and run the camera off the battery brick. You still must have a canon battery in the camera. USB-C can support up to 100 Watts...but has to be set up for it. Look for USB-C with PD, it has additional circuitry that talks to the cameras power management system to see what it needs. You can shoot with it, the cameras power management board will see the incoming power and can do two things with it, but only one at a time. It can charge the internal battery or it can run the camera. If you turn the camera on with a PD power supply, it will run off the incoming USB-C. When the camera is off, it will charge the internal battery. It is not stated in the manual, you have to read the manual and then read all the USB-C/ Thunderbird tech stuff and figure it out. I use this for astro-photograph with the R5 and it works great. I use a phone battery power brick I got a Target for $60.00, less then a second battery cost. Your car USB is probably max 15 Watts so would only trickle charge the camera with the camera off.
I prefer all black camera bodies. I would not give a two-toned camera a second look. I know a lot of people like that vintage look that Leica, Fuji, etc have available (even the Canon M6 Mkii). I can’t stand it though.
Chelsea with regards to the battery did you turn off the Bluetooth, gps and wifi ? I was experiencing poor battery life on my Z7 and turned off the wireless functions and it made a massive difference!!
I use SanDisk Extreme Pro 300mb/s 128gb SD cards. I always format not erase images after importing them to my PC. After 3000 shot not issues. Agree on using back buttons to toggle off eye af for wildlife that is in trees or difficult backgrounds. The Old Sigma 150-600 C does not focus well and after 800 shots with different settings on 23 were keepers. Love the focus and detail images from the rf 24-70 2.8.
Hi Chelsea, I have two main problems 1. weather sealing is not perfect around the viewfinder - I got foggy/humidity in my viewfinder after the light rain or rain with snow. People from Canon told me I'm not first with this problem - there should be the problem with the sealing around the eyecup 2. Eyecup is fixed - I can't use my old raincovers
To get over a sticky eye AF I find having the AF on button set to eye AF, the AE Lock button set as my normal focusing method (selected using the lens or lens adapter ring) and AF Point Selection button set as spot gives me great flexibility. If I find the eye AF sticking a quick jab on the spot AF (AF Point Selection) on the eye then resume eye AF. Works every time. The eye AF then locks the on to the subject. This set up allows me to shoot one handed as all the controls I need are buttons on the right grip top and right rear of the camera. After trying many differing configurations over the last 6 months it's the one I've settled on. Take 2 SD cards with you Chelsea. They're not expensive.
You surely wouldn't like the camera to have silver, grey or any light reflective color when shooting widlife. May look good but animals will notice and hide away🤔🐦🦉
Me again. Re: focus tracking. Go to AF menu 3 and select Case 2. Then, set the sliders on the bottom of that screen to Tracking sensitivity all the way left and Accel/decel all the way to the right. Also make sure you have selected Servo AF. I have tried many variants of this on my R7 and this one seems to be most sticky. I'm hoping these will work as well on my new R5.
yes I’ve only had my R5 for a couple of weeks, I prefer to use the VF rather than the LCD screen because of sun glare. So any problems have to be resolved by button pressing. For example the green square ends up in the corner, I press the focus mode button and then press the joystick to centre it. When the camera goes to sleep, I can’t see anything compared to the optical DSLR. (EOS 5D mk III). I’m considering the two button focussing method but need to learn more before changing the default settings.
Chelsea, I have the R6. Another work around for that sticky AF is that you can click the joystick in and it'll make it look at picking something closer to the centre frame. If you have an eye near the middle when you do this it's pretty good at resetting and locking onto what you want. I do also use your Centrepoint AF button trick which is helpful as well
I had the issue a few times with the R5 freezing on me when i used the SD card. In my case taking the battery out to restart the camera was sufficient without having to reformat. Another issue that i have found is the camera slowing down and not tracking AF as well if the battery are at less than 50% power going from around 12 frames per second to about 5 or 6 frames per second.
I have 2 R5C's (Basically the same circuitry as the R5) I have had a few freezing/locking up incidents. I use only Sandisk Extreme Pro cards. (I like Lexar but have had a couple of issues with them) I had my R5C with an EF 100-400 and EF to RF adaptor mounted and chalked it up to the extra contacts/circuitry of the adaptor. Then I had it happen again with a new RF 100-500. I did some research and decided to turn off the touch screen capability. As I read that it could compete with the auto focus if you accidentally touch the screen while using button auto focus.(This would most likely be with my nose!) I also have a suspicion that having a battery less than half full, or low light and or low ISO might be contributing factors. Thoughts?
I have been shooting with the R5 since November and haven't had hte freezing issue. I'm using prograde SD cards, so maybe im lucky or those ones dont cause the problem.
The camera I just sold, the Fujifilm X-T3 was absolutely beautiful to look at but horribly uncomfortable to use. The Smallrig L bracket with its wooden grip extension helped a lot but not enough. My new R6 might be boring to LOOK at but it sure FEELs good to use. There is a reason the camera is so rounded and that is comfort. The camera isn't the art, the photo is the art. I enjoyed this video and I thought you had great lighting.
Question so you just need to always have a spare card formatted so when it locks up your good and get smaller cards since you have to format them? Save some money on the bigger cards. I'm getting ready to upgrade and this made my jaw drop.
I have an R5 and R6, haven't had an sd failure. Just format cards before using them. And don't switch memory cards from body to body. If you do, format it :)
Great video Chelsa but you missed to mention 1 flaw of the R5... Test this one out: On electronic shutter... it only has 2 rates of fire... ONE SHOT... and 20 FPS Burst... nothing in between... the other burst speed options do nothing. Its super annoying when you are shooting on a Film Set, doing backstage and to keep it silent, select Electronic Shutter and the camera goes wild with the burst filling your memory card in a few minutes. Thats a flaw, we should be able to select 10fps or 5fps.. but it only goes 20fps no matter what.
That's hardly a flaw. That's a spec you don't like but not a flaw as the R5 performs to it's spec just like the video capability. The SD lock up sounds like a flaw although in 7 months I've only had one instance of this happening.
@Chelsea, I feel the battery life issues are from poor software/OS implementations. I’m coming from a 5dm4 and use super-tele primes for wildlife and BIF, so my observations are relative to my 5dm4. I’ve seen some of these mentioned on online forums, but not a whole lot. I feel the IS(and IBIS) software implementation is poor. The camera is continuously running both body and lens stabilization, when I’m not ready or waiting to take pictures...and even when I put the camera down. This is probably using up a lot of battery. They should have implemented something similar to DSLRs. On the 5dm4, IS only comes on when I’m metering, and IS stops a couple of seconds after metering stops. Also, when I’m walking around with the gear, most of the time, the power-saving timers don’t seem to work. Maybe the evf sensors is getting triggered....I haven’t been able to nail down the cause yet. Soooo......I’m walking around, for a couple of hours in woodlands looking for birds, with the screens and IS+IBIS running the whole time (plus the IS rattle....uggghh). It doesn’t make sense. I had to dedicate the light bulb button to “display off” to put the camera to sleep, and remember to press it when I’m done shooting. Also also, they should’ve implemented an option in “screen/viewfinder display” to mimic a DSLR. Meaning an option, “evf for shooting only and screen for image review only”. And if you turn off image review time, the screen would be always be off, until I press the playback button. This is how I have the 5dm4 setup, which saves a ton of battery because the back screen is off, almost all of the time (I don’t use Q menus). The software/OS/UI implementation is, in some cases, so different from my DSLR, which I’m guessing is geared towards “videographicists”. On memory cards, look into the boot/wake time variation from card to card. Some cards take longer to boot/wake. Since you are using both card slots, maybe disparities in the boot/wake times are causing the crashes. Maybe try a bunch of cards individually, write down the boot/wake times, then use the two cards with the largest time difference, and see if you can recreate the problems. I have a suspicion it has something to do with the times. Overall, the r5 is an epic camera, mostly due to the AF and 20fps. Would’ve needed a lot of luck on my 5dm4 to match shots from the r5. Having said that, I prefer my 5dm4 for the ergonomics, feel, OS, and general usability over the r5. 5dm4 body with an r5 sensor......one can only dream.
There is an option to write to both cards in video that no one on TH-cam seems to find. However, it is limited. It forces 8k RAW on the CFe slot and 4K 30 on the SD slot. But yes, it would be better if you were able to select more options.
Maybe add this to your flaw list! I bought the R5 yesterday. Got it set up and tried it out today on some sea gulls. Main issue is the start up lag time of the electronic viewfinder. What I mean is when you quickly raise the camera to shoot something, there is such a delay in the viewfinder coming to life that you miss the shot. So, let's say you're shooting sports and moving to another spot or just not much happening in front of you. Then you see something about to come into play. You quickly raise the camera to your eye and all you see is black for a split second until it lights up. But in that split second, you missed the shot. In shooting my 1DX or any DSLR, this is never a problem. Very frustrating. It doesn't look like you can keep the viewfinder on either. Not that I would want to because of battery drain. Now what? I also noticed the issue right away with the eye focus and set up two back buttons. Great video! Thank You! BTW, you are so adorable!
I have R5 and R6 since October 2020 and I slaughtered them to test them. Ceremonies, glamorous shots and sports. I must say that in terms of cards I have never had problems, both Cfexpress and SD with brands like Lexar and Manfrotto. Any canon in the last 20 years has never given me problems reading the cards and formatting them in the room, without going to remove and put back in another room. Do we know how to use the menus? AF is great and with the life of the new LP-E6NH battery I got up to 3450 shots per burst on two occasions. I believe your battery still needs to have full charge cycles to work well, otherwise you have to change it.
In muy use i found that the camera and lens stabilizer engage every time you press a button, ANY BUTTON, not only the shutter or focus buttons (that’s when it should engage, only). Also the lack of wb, iso, metering mode/white balance buttons, the lack of gps, etc are things I missed a lot. After using the R5 I decided to buy a 5d iv. I miss the higher resolution but for the rest I’m quite happy with it.
I'm retiring soon and I'd love to upgrade from a Canon 80D. I am just a hobbyist and shoot mostly birds and nature. I often have to crop my pictures because I don't get very close. My question is do I go for the canon r5 for the megapixels? I never shoot video so would a r6 be more practical? I want this to be my nice investment so I can enjoy my retirement. Photography is a sort of therapy for me and I love getting out into nature to appreciate the beauty of it. What would you choose if you were in my position?
The 50mm 1.2 is huge compared to the 1.4! We have had the R5 for a few weeks now and I love it! We just got the adapter ordered so we can use the 50mm I'm hoping the image quality is still good!
Some of those problems are what I would call deal breakers . They need to fix them ASAP. Those are some major problems you mentioned. I’m glad you talked about them. Wow!!!😳
For a c.$3,500 camera these 'lock up' issues are beyond "deal breakers". I'm about to shell out over 10k on new gear, the R5 was in my sights, but why have a camera that *may* lock-up in (straightforward) use???
Your 5th issue can be solved by purchasing some skins for the Canon R5 or most new mirrorless bodies (and some DSLR). There are a few companies out there that sell them. I'd seen a few advertisements on Instagram.
I have prograde for both SD and CFExpress type b and not once have I experienced the lockups. But I have experience the autofocus locking on something I don’t want so it is frustrating I hope a firmware fixes. I’m not doing a feature length film so the 30min doesn’t bother me per se but can you elaborate what you meant Chelsea? About the 30 min being a law??? As for aesthetics sure what Leica does is cool but I think the look of the R5 is great. But more than that I like the look of the L lenses. I love love LOVE ❤️ the red band on the L series. I really don’t get why Nikkor dropped the gold band on the Z mounts. And it might be petty but it was a consideration going to Canon. So I’m very very happy with my R5 purchase. But had I waited since I wasn’t in immediate need I might have bought the R5c edition. If only for the ability in shooting longer without heat being an issue especially it being summer soon don’t want those hot 30° plus days affecting it too. And I can’t say I’ve even shot once yet but I like the option there and it being larger the idea using CPS or something to mod it is close to nil. Oh well. It’s still a nearly perfect camera and I just wish it came with GPS like the DSLR older sibling has. There is no reason and I’d rather not use my mobile I forget do use nor take up hot shoe with an accessory.
I get the pretty complaint, but do you think that Canon cameras function well ergonomically? I find them to be more comfortable in hand than other brands I've used.
I have had no problem with my SD cards. Artie Morris at Birds As Art has a good document about the Canon R5 Auto Focus system and has a process for eliminating BBF, but also a one button option for switching to various auto focus types.that could easily solve your concern.
That SD card issue should be a reason this camera is replaced with an A1. Wth kind of camera has issues with it’s sd card slot. That’s like the main function.
R5 is one of the best looking mirrorless cameras imo and RF 24-70/2.8 is a total beauty. If you want a rangefinder, go and buy one. I do like M6 II silver too, but those are different cameras for different purposes imo, especially when you need them to combine with certain lenses. 750 shots on a half charged battery is imo quite decent for what the R5 is. As for the AF, we use similar setup - we have initial point for AF set to the middle option, definitely not the Auto, or you have no chance influence, what the camera focuses to. I call it - focus & recompose reborn. Also - we've got AF-ON button set to Eye AF, which works as a backup even in a Single focus AF, * set to Servo on/off and Focus selection set to instant switch between the modes - we use just two - Eye / face tracking and Single point. Works quite well for us.
With the utmost respect These are the most ridiculous negatives I have ever heard about R5 It was quite clear You tried very hard to increase the number of negative points to 5 I also use R5 More than 7 months I do not want to say that this camera is without problems, but Battery life is better than average I never had a problem with the memory card Autofocus is the best I've ever experienced About the colorful design of the camera I better not talk
"These are the most ridiculous negatives I have ever heard about R5" Well, then that's a good thing, not a bad thing. "You tried very hard to increase the number of negative points to 5" Yes, she said so herself. "Battery life is better than average" Not actually a refutation of what she said. "I never had a problem with the memory card" And I've never been in a car crash. Yet, I accept that they happen regardless. "Autofocus is the best I've ever experienced" Not actually a refutation of what she said. "About the colorful design of the camera I better not talk" She said aesthetics is a thing people value. One of the flaws she *was* right about, but in the future will be wrong about, is the 30min video limit. That will go away on the next firmware update :D
About design: Hasselblad too, no matter how much one hates Hasselblad. (I don't) design is quite something. The X1D, the V, the H6D the H4D limited edition.
So happy I found my sweet spot with a cheap last gen Fuji that beautifully renders skin tones and is a great shooting experience.. Super new, expensive, high res beasts fortunately don't tempt.
Wow I haven't watched this channel is ages! Several years. I feel so out of touch with photography!! She still looks amazing though, and I still get the calming vibe. Haha. I used to be able to put earphones in and fall asleep to these videos.
In regard to the 'boring black' color, I think a gun-metal grey or dual-tone grey & black would be a nice alternative that preserves the pro look while allowing a bit of individuality
Battery issues? Well 750 images on a 1/2 battery... is about the same as my 5Dsr. I also use the battery grip... I'm a big male and it just feels better with the grip AND you get twice as many photos. I guess if you shot a lot at 20 fps you'll get to 700 in just a couple of minutes of actual shooting but not an issue for me. My one gripe is that some features are disabled (e.g., 20 fps and usb charging) when using an older E6 battery (not an E6n or E6nh). Like the 30 minute video limit, it's just an arbitrary restriction.
There are lots of ways to save battery life without loosing performance. Setting up the LCD so that most of the time you keep it closed with the screen protected means it’s off and doesn’t drain the battery. Having the EVF set to turn off after 30s and turn on when you bring your eye to it means even more saving. Utilising the ability to have different screen modes that you can change with the info button helps. You can set the LCD so that when it is flipped out the EVF is turned off. That means that you are only using one screen at any time again saving battery. If you then turn the screen around and have it facing outwards but flush with the body both the LCD & the EVF work. This works well.
IT could be her camera, I have not read anything about that, but I can't believe Chelsea will mention it without researching and learning that it's something that is "real"
This used to happen commonly on point 'n' shoot cameras. If you took a card out of one camera and put it in another, without formatting first. I think the issue then was something to do with how different cameras indexed their images. The second camera knew there were files (images) on the card, but didn't know how to address/access them. I had a camera whose handbook actually said SD cards must be formatted if containing images from a different camera.
@@jaimeduncan6167 LOL .. Our most favorite Valued Chelsea is beginning to get a little THICK.. :( We Fans Need to hook her Up with with Marie Osmond's Nutrisystem :-) xoxoxo
I don't understand the card problem, I have never formatted a card. One thing I do appreciate, when I started I was using digital, 1998, I was using a 256Mb PCMCIA card, something like 4"x2", I am glad they increased capacity.
I came to the R5 from the Sony a7RIV. I have seen the SD card freeze, glad to know what's causing it. The battery life is frustrating as well. My fave (and one of the biggest reasons I moved): it just 'feels' better. The shutter sound, the way the shutter button feels, the texture they used in the grip, etc. It's not the only reason I moved over, but it's definitely a part of the equation.
I wonder if the SD card issue has to do with them being initially formatted for another brand camera? I’ve been using my older SD cards that I used on older Canon cameras- careful to format within the R5 before use - with no issues so far.
Hey, thanks for the info on the memory cards. That was a bit of a shocker. I normally (but probably not always) format my cards when I put them in the camera, and so I have not had that problem, but thanks for the tip.
I had a similar issue on first firmware with my CFExpress card - haven’t had it since updated from 1.0 - I have my SET button custom to pull focus to the centre of the frame - my usual fix if the AF sticks to something I don’t want in focus (don’t need to change focus mode) ... the 30 min limit annoys me in theory, but realistically I will never hit that 30 min limit ... one thing that doesn’t annoy me is if you fill up your SD card the camera blocks you from switching the card you are seeing.., so you have to take out the non-full card... and then you will see the card that is full.. and then you can delete, and the. Put back in the other card
I had the same SD card problem on my 6D. That was with a Lexmark SD card, so I stopped using it. It would freeze my camera / error out and then I would have to remove battery and card. As a habit now, I tend to format my cards in camera now right before I start shooting. San Disk's SD cards seem to work well fo rme though. Knock on wood.
I've managed 1,800 shots on 75% battery on my R5, I think that's pretty decent personally, that was over 5 hours of shooting. That is utilising the slower refresh rate viewfinder as well as the power saving options.
I just purchased an R5. Re: SD card problems. I was able to format from within the R5, and I did a low level format. I noticed somewhere in the cajillions of instructions that you should only format from within the camera, nowhere else. Maybe this helps, Chelsea.
Chelsea - I've had SD issues with my Z7 and D850 as well. The 300+ mbps SD cards seem to tank and error for me with fair frequency, but all I have to do is pop it out and back in and it works again. As for camera appearance, I couldn't agree more. Alphagvrd skins are a good fix, look pretty damn cool, and even protect the camera a bit.
One of the reasons I bought a low end Olympus OM-D EM-10 Mark IIIs (S for Silver) is the beauty of the thing. I agree, I like to hold a camera that I like to look at.
I had to smile about your 2nd quirk: the Autofocus. I was shooting gannets and the camera animal eye autofocus decided to lock onto the anal regions of a bird. I kept resetting the focus point, but like a moth to the flame, it went back to the back. I had to speak to the camera severely! It adds a whole new meaning to the concept of shooting the moon... Quirk #3: I use a battery grip and I prefer that for the ergonomics as well as the battery life. Doing some fine tuning of the display settings makes a bit of a difference. Quirk #5: I am happy with black, it makes the camera to look the same as any other camera - ok for some, not so much for others. As I shoot across a bunch of subjects, I have configurations assigned to C1-3 on the dial. C1 is for animals, C2 is people, C3 is landscape.
As recommended by the manufacturers, I format my memory cards every single time I put them into a camera-Canons, Nikons, Panasonics, Sonys. I've never had a camera seize up at all in more than 25 years shooting, whether from lens issues or memory card issues. Maybe you should plan to format your cards with each insertion as well? Battery life? R5+2 batteries in the vertical grip, 50-54 degrees Fahrenheit ambient temperature, Servo AF for every shot, I took 996 photos over the course of 5.5 hours (switching the camera off between uses) with 62% charge remaining on battery 1 (the new battery) and 58% on battery 2 (the battery that came with the EOS R). Virtually no chimping.
I had a similar problem with an 128GB Lexar UHS II card on Canon 80D, 90D & 5D Mark IV. I used JPEGMini Pro to compress my JPEGs and save space on my computer. Sometimes I’d do that directly on the SD card instead of the computer. I never had a problem doing that on a Sandisk Extreme Pro (32GB, 64GB &128GB) except with this Lexar. It would take about 30 minutes to empty the buffer! Depending on how many photos I had compressed, it would take more shots stored at that ridiculously slow speed before starting to write fast again. As if the camera was performing defragmentation on the card and moving files around on this specific card would take forever. The red “writing to card” LED would be on the whole time and after a couple of minutes when one photo would be written I could take another one. Formatting the card after letting the camera to finish writing would make it work normally again. I simply don’t touch the files on that SD card anymore.
Thank you Chelsea! You confirm what I had experienced with R5. Some issues with focus, like on a flower yesterday. We doesn’t always agree, me and R5. Didn’t yet have had the other problems. And you are so right about no 5. Moore bling, bling. 😁💥👑🎨💎
I agree whole heartedly about not being able to record video to both cards at once. I can understand why it may not be possible for 8k or HQ 4k video, but they should at least make it possible for straight 4k or even 1080.
i never take my sd card out of my camera, i just wifi the images then delete and carry on, never formatted a card either, never had a single problem with sandisk great video Chelsea
Memory card issue seemed familiar, similar things happened to me on 1DX ii , just wasn’t often. R5 gets real clunky when the battery is below 20%, slow down big time, so this is the first time bought the grip
When I was deciding which system I wanted to upgrade into (from some 15-year-old gear), I described Canon's design language as "terminally boring" to a friend. Fuji has gorgeous retro styling, and Sony even has a very crisp modern take. I still went with Canon, and at least the bodies are the most comfortable to hold!
The r5 and r6 both have back focus button in a bad place. Right where your thumb rests. Pressing it by accident will kill your auto focus. Took me months to figure this problem out!!!!
1) I had an issue of the lockout/freeze but never had to reformat. On and off usually works for me. 2) AF, i use spot focus (not the eye) etc for my default focus and set back button to use that. Then, the other custom button to activate eye focus. Thus, inside the settings where it has where eye focus to be prioritize, I set it to where I have my spot focus. So, work best for me since I can easily choose if I want to do eye focus or normal without even changing in the menu. 3) Style wise, haha I do agree but then, Canon camera ergonomic wise is superb.. just the style :P. 4) Versatility.. yup.. give a lot of points even with the video. 5) Lense.. unfortunately, I can't afford them :( Waiting on Sigma Art version, then I can smile crazily.
With regard to pretty it up: They definitely can. My SLR1 Canon is white and looks quite nice with my Light Grey Canon L series 100-400mm (Mark II) I’ve gotten complements on it. Wondering out loud: Can one be considered serious with a pretty camera or just a well off ingenue?
With the exception of the remote port on the front of the camera, I find the design of the R5 quite appealing. I like the Fujis too but I wouldn’t want that design language applied to the R5.
The look of the camera? I use my camera and don't look at it. Battery life quirk is a bit stretch. Even though your battery can last long, the best practice is to carry extras. Find me a serious photographer who only carries one battery. Nice video though.
I remember having that freezing issue with certain SD cards in my Panasonic G9 years ago, it was super frustrating, but I finally found cards it liked.
If you can't quite afford, I can recommend the Canon 6D, and highly recommend the Canon 5D4. Full frame high ISO capability is a beautiful thing! I like the 80D also--my main cam for almost 2 years, and lots of good shots from it. The 5D4 is a beautiful camera to work with. I also aspire to an R5, but my priority is better lenses, as I'm quite satisfied with the image quality and functionality of the 5D4. I got mine used for $2200 Canadian.
My R5 froze up two nights ago during a live performance shoot. About 6 times I had to pull the battery to reset it. Found out that the firmware was not up to date. Hope that was the issue.
@@arhodes All set. No more issues with it freezing up. Love this camera! Not sad anymore that my 1DX failed and replaced it with the R5. This camera is amazing!
Did you miss the hello kitty wrap on the R5/R6?I’ve had mine about 5 1/2 months and I have also had that auto focus problem that I hope they fix. I thought it was just me. I have not experienced a card formatting issue whatsoever however. Other than that focus and finding the eye, particularly on animals, it’s been a fantastic camera!
Chelsey, I like your solo videos where you're not having to riff off Tony. You have a nice, easygoing vibe.
750 shots off half a battery ain't too bad for a mirrorless!
I totally agree but... at 20 frames per second, that could be little more than half a minute shooting time!
@@WIDGI lol tru
I got 780 shots and still had ~70% battery left on my R5. But that was starting from a full battery.
Not bad for canon ML =D
perhaps continuous AF was on ? That was the 1st thing I turned off in my R6.. keeps the lenses moving in their focus motors and significantly causes battery drain.
Are you kidding I love the R5's design; big black piece of tech, no frills, just ergonomics and raw technology. It's just absolute power. You can feel yourself go super Saiyan the moment you pick one up..
I always appreciate your honesty. I like hearing complaints and positives from someone who like (loves) their camera. No camera is perfect.
I shoot wildlife with supertele primes and people ask me why I’m using a rebel with a 600 prime :)
Wow. The R5 has an Airplane Mode? Good to know… This comment needs a LOT of attention.
@@longliveclassicmusic is that a feature? Pretty sure even in sony apsc it came as a default option in the menu...
Apparently without "Airplane" mode turned on the R5 will keep using WiFi even when turned off!!
Same. And I’m using Sony tough cards as well.
Weird. By the time I can afford an R5, maybe the issue will have been fixed XD
R6. Identical problem! Using Lexar Professional 128GB V60 ii U3 1667x 250MB/s. I’ve formatted and re-formatted in-camera; makes no difference. Like to think Canon are going to provide a fix, very soon.
Same problem. I am using Lexar Pro 128gb 300MB/s V90 II 2000x that have never been used in any other camera but the R5.
Been talking to Canon for a week and they insist they don’t know why freeze-ups occur. For what it's worth I use Sony Tough cards and have 2,000 actuations on my R5 in the last eight months.
Don't you dare turn my black box into a fashion accessory!
No it needs to change. Come on look at Apple.

@@Whiskey185 In the 80s Canon asked Colani to redesign the camera. Well, he did. But it never got hold. (google for: Canon Colani)
yeah, it's not a handbag.

Hi Chelsea,
I have two main problems
1. weather sealing is not perfect around the viewfinder - I got foggy/humidity in my viewfinder after the light rain or rain with snow. People from Canon told me I'm not first with this problem - there should be the problem with the sealing around the eyecup
Whenever Chelsea does a video I feel like she's about to break up with me even though we aren't married, dating or have ever met. LOL 😂

Hello I am being to buy the R5 within ext days, are you happy?
Good luck. You will love the R5.
yes I’ve only had my R5 for a couple of weeks, I prefer to use the VF rather than the LCD screen because of sun glare.
I do also use your Centrepoint AF button trick which is helpful as well
Agree. The center point trick with a second back button focus button she showed a few weeks ago is money!
This should be pinned . Thank you for pointing it out.
Test this one out:
On electronic shutter... it only has 2 rates of fire... ONE SHOT... and 20 FPS Burst... nothing in between... the other burst speed options do nothing.
When the autofocus gets sticky I like that I can keep my eye on the EVF and then use my thumb to fine-tune the focus spot

I have had no problem with my SD cards. Artie Morris at Birds As Art has a good document about the Canon R5 Auto Focus system and has a process for eliminating BBF, but also a one button option for switching to various auto focus types.that could easily solve your concern.

500$ sell our R5 camera

Battery duration: turn off continuous autofocus tracking when you don't need it
In regard to the 'boring black' color, I think a gun-metal grey or dual-tone grey & black would be a nice alternative that preserves the pro look while allowing a bit of individuality
This is interesting cause I’ve never had that issue with the memory cards. It might be because you swap the card between different camera brand bodies
IT could be her camera, I have not read anything about that, but I can't believe Chelsea will mention it without researching and learning that it's something that is "real"
Even if that is true it shouldn't happen. They are switching cameras between different camera brand bodies all the time for years now.
Correct. I believe it was SanDisk on A TWiP episode that discussed this and said swapping memory cards without formatting is not advised

I’m in a similar dilemma of choosing between the two. What other issues did you have with the Sony
Thank you!
With did you change as the a7RIV scores much better in stills and video is still strong on the R4? Single card videorecording is a dealbreaker for me.
The sony systems have DMF to override the AF and it works brilliantly
Chelsea, you are amazing to listen to. Very detailed but easy to follow - Thank you!
Great video Chelsea. Fun to watch as well as informative.
We've had several firmware updates since you recorded this video. Still having the problem with the SD card freezing up the camera?
So if I get an R5 always format before I use it again like I already do 😉
Thank you Chelsea! You confirm what I had experienced with R5. Some issues with focus, like on a flower yesterday. We doesn’t always agree, me and R5. Didn’t yet have had the other problems. And you are so right about no 5. Moore bling, bling. 😁💥👑🎨💎
Great video Chelsea! You also look outstanding
I agree whole heartedly about not being able to record video to both cards at once. I can understand why it may not be possible for 8k or HQ 4k video, but they should at least make it possible for straight 4k or even 1080.
Agree with your design point - Canon can revamp the design from a boring black to use some aesthetically inspiring dual tone colour combinations
If you want your cameras in multiple colors, Pentax has you covered 💀
i never take my sd card out of my camera, i just wifi the images then delete and carry on, never formatted a card either, never had a single problem with sandisk
great video Chelsea
Thanks for the video, always nice to hear your perspective. I also made the change from Sony to Canon
Has anyone noticed a burning smell when you use the older batteries (ie LP-E6)? This has occurred with my EOS R6...
I would love to progress to the Canon R5 from my 80D.
Are you still having this issue after firmware update?
@@arhodes All set. No more issues with it freezing up. Love this camera! Not sad anymore that my 1DX failed and replaced it with the R5. This camera is amazing!
Did you miss the hello kitty wrap on the R5/R6?I’ve had mine about 5 1/2 months and I have also had that auto focus problem that I hope they fix. I thought it was just me. I have not experienced a card formatting issue whatsoever however. Other than that focus and finding the eye, particularly on animals, it’s been a fantastic camera!
@3:44 I often feel watched walking through the bush, so I think the trees do have eyes
I can listen to Chelsea all day.
