      Same. If there's one thing I've learnt about Chris from his channel, other than that his wife loves him dearly (see the way she looks at him even with a camera in his hand) is that he's a stickler for thoroughness. He'd rather be last but with substance rather than first with nothing to say.

      same - and "photographers" that actually use and review the camera for Photography aka Stills Photography and not Videography or Filmmaking, if i want to get top brass in cinecams i'd buy a RED ... but i want a compact STILLS camera and reviews that not only show the addon feature of being able to record video - but use it for its primary function - taking stills.

      I love your standardised testing format, the calm tone and subtle humour, the classic smooth jazz, and the constantly concise, earnest and both technical and artistic advice you add to your work. and then you test them on APSC/full frame/vice versa too?? I don't think I've ever bought a lens that you haven't tested.

    Thanks for waiting a month to gather your thoughts for your review. I prefer this over straight-out-of-the-box type reviews, where the reviewers always seem overly excited and sometimes insincere. I think I'll be trading in my EOS R and buying an R5 to replace it, I'm so glad they got rid of the stupid multifunction bar and replaced it with a joystick! That was easily my biggest annoyance with the EOS R (I had a 5D MK2 prior to it). I'm mostly a stills shooter so the R5's shortcomings in video mode don't really affect me.

      Yeah , not bad for a now 5 plus year old camera , the thing that comes to mind looking at all these camera reviews to me is that , all cameras have their strong and weak points , while it is easy to get carried away with the latest and greatest wizz bang models(and the grass is always greener .... ) , , if you have an old model that is still competent and with a good lens , you can still get great images and media .
      I look at some of the good photo`s i have taken with my A73 , and i see no reason too spend 4 or 5 grand , or 6.5 grand in this case on another new camera body , and then a lens or two and in my region that in all honesty is only going to give very fractional improvement in image quality for the most part unless you are a pro or blowing up to poster size to sell or pixel peeping .

    Just a great review . THANK YOU Christopher. I was buying the NIKON Z 7 2, but a 6 week wait just didn't cut it for me. My Sony 7 R stopped working and needed a new camera. I went to Adorama and was ready to just buy the NIKON , and was browsing around the Canon counter. Picked up the camera just for fun, as the price tag was prohibitive, and fell for it because of the ergonomics. I was trading in a lot of my equipment so it ended up costing me $1400. I must say the pictures are amazing. NOTHING to correct boost or sharpen. WOW. There are a lot of buttons I need to learn and functions but a little patience anything can be done.

    Hey Chris - your review is actually the first "full" review ive seen so far - the others i watch (Jared Polin and Tony Northrup) all only focussed on the video features so far and are holding back their full review - yet im only interested in the "stills" part of the camera - while owning my 6Dmkii now for 2.5 years i never took a single video with it :D ...
    The only downside i see with the r5 is that its so prohibitivly expensive, clocking in a 4580$ here in switzerland (thats with the mandatory EF adapter), technically i could afford it but it feels very "wasty" - yet the R6 with its 20mp feels somehow... held back by the 20mp for a landscape photographer like me. I crop often, as in always, at least 20% and thats just format change... I hope that they will lower the price in a year or so to something reasonable. that said, this comment comes from a hobbyist and not someone that earns money with his photography, so my way of rating things is very different and price has a value of its own.
    Still greate review as always!
    I just hope one day youll show us how you do your focus char test on those 600mm lenses, or is your garden just so long? :-D

    Hello, Christopher. Delighted to have discovered your videos via this outstanding and intelligent review of the R5, which I'm hoping to make my next EOS purchase. So many nuggets you point out which have added more conviction to that purchase. Among them, so happy to learn that Canon has graciously acknowledged the fact that occasionally we EOS shooters have occasionally chosen to purchase aftermarket lenses such as Sigma ART, by including optimization for such lenses. Also delighted to see demonstrated just how effective the IBIS is on the R5. This is such a USEFUL review, I plan to watch it again (as my birthday - READ: Excuse to purchase sooner rather than later - approaches). It is so welcome to view camera reviews that are reasoned and devoid of noisy hype. Also, I appreciated your good taste in your music background. Needless to say, I have subscribed, and will look forward to viewing more of your work.

    Its the best camera I have ever used. If you shoot in ambient temps of 65 degrees F or less - you likely will never overheat the camera. Even in 8K. For long form recording I point a small and silent usb powered fan at the ports, and it will record in all modes forever that way. Even in ambient temps up to about 80 degrees F.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Christopher Frost Photography Yes. I have personally tested it myself. Many others as well. Multiple posts with pictures of times on the Canon Rumors Discord. I have filled my 512GB Cf Express Card after shooting over one hour of 8k IPB Video in a 79 degree room, with a silent USB fan pointed at the ports. I have repeated this test many times. It also works with 4kHQ, and 4K 60. I shot 4 sequences of 4K 120 this way and stopped because who needs 30 total minutes or more of continuous 4K 120. Many others have not even needed the fan if they shoot in 70 degree F or cooler. See the Ordinary Filmmaker. This is all with firmware 1.1. Also the TH-cam channel No Life has posted his videos with a small fan essentially recording 8k forever.

  • @jordanlin4437
    @jordanlin4437 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Here's a thought about stabilization tests. Rather than just testing the maximum shutter speed of the camera, stabilized, and compare that to the reciprocal rule, also test the camera unstabilized. The reason for this is that you are assuming you will get a sharp image with the reciprocal rule shutter speed, which is often untrue on high megapixel cameras.
    For instance, say you are shooting on a 50mm lens. You find that, with stabilization, you get sharp images at around 1/25, so you conclude the camera has 1 stop of stabilization. However, if you were to test the camera unstabilized, you may find out that you only get sharp images at around 1/200, so you are actually getting 3 stops of stabilization, not just 1.
    The reciprocal rule is a thing from the film days, and although helpful on 24-megapixel cameras, they are a bit slow for higher megapixel cameras.
    Using this method also bypasses the idea of having stable hands or not, as your 'base metric' (unstabilized tests) is based on your own hands as well, not some rule.
    Edit: also, the way you said "Bokeh" at 14:06 is amazing :P

    With a good LP-E6N battery, you also can achieve the 12 fps! They may not last as long as an NH battery, but in a pinch, they are useful! I hope you find a way to retest those RF lenses you looked at on the R, as there are a few features that are missing in some of them. For example, on the r5, there is that icon for IS that is enhanced on the r5 due to IBIS (I think) and you get the "hand+" icon in the VF rather than just the "hand". I think, IIRC, that this (hand+) means the two are working together. I had assumed this were true for all RF lenses, but apparently not. That feature does not work with the RF 24-105 F/4L or the RF 70-200 F/2.8L but it does work with the new RF 100-500 F/4.5-7.1L lens. So, I guess the combined IS (hand+) only works with RF lenses released recently and after/with the R5/R6.

    Well Christopher I must say, this is some fabulous review work. Really excelled yourself here. Made the R5 look like a better buy than most other big name TH-cam camera reviewers and correctly identified Canon mismarketed this as the 8K video beast when the real draw was actually the quite breathtaking stills performance. Really, you've pointed out some features like the partial F stopping that other reviewers just missed. Seems rather non-biased as well.
    Bravo. The only problem is I want one now, where I hadn't previously. 🤔🙄😂

    Hi Chris, a great review of the R5. I had Canon gear, 7D II, 5DIV, 500 f4 II etc and had no problem moving to Panasonic G9 some two years ago. However the G9 is not a good wildlife camera that's why I am looking at the R5. One problem you mentioned, image blackout and a knocking sound, well I had this with the G9. It was the sensor/ibis which on the G9 is a combined unit and it was replaced under warranty. Some of the other problems you incurred will hopefully be improved with updated firmware.

    Good camera in the winter months, keep your hands warm!! Canon did not market the R5 wrong they created a camera not fit for purpose. If a device has functionality it should work as described, if it doesn't work as described it clearly has design faults.

      That's my way of thinking in not upgrading to the a7R IV :-) I think the 40mp area is a great resolution to test lenses, you get to challenge their performance, but it's not too far away from 24mp for those who shoot on lower resolution cameras.

    Fantastic review like always. I love this camera and have had no issues with it but I am photographer and not a videographer. My only complaint is that the Exposure Simulation turns off when you have a flash or a flash trigger. You can hit two buttons to get it back or turn of the trigger but that is annoying. However, I am sure they could fix this easily with a firmware update

    Christopher, the R5 has the best dynamic range of any current full frame camera, besting the Nikons and Sonys, according to the biggest sensor testing site Photons To Photos. However, Canon sacrificed highlight range for shadow range, so the images work best when underexposed.

Do you lose something with the EF adapter, such as aperture, light...?

    Did the Mechanical Shutter vertical blurring bug ever get addressed in subsequent firmware? If you shoot burst mode does it only affect the first exposure in the burst sequence or do all exposures in the burst suffer from vertical blur? Was it only with the 1/100th of a second shutter speed that you saw this bug?

    I’m also seeing the blurring with mechanical shutter, mostly at 1/60, 1/100. Same for ECFS images beyond the first image in a burst series. I did some controlled tests and contacted Canon support about what I presume is shutter shock but didn’t get a satisfactory acknowledgment from them. You mention that they are planning to address this in a future firmware upgrade. Might this be coming in the next upgrade due in February 2021? I wouldn’t mind doing electronic shutter for many situations except that I am drowning in too many images captured due to inability to specify burst speed in electronic shutter. Thanks for your great content and presentation.

    Kudos for this very nice review, it went into some details that I found quite interesting. Such as the R5 suppporting corrections in the Sigma ART lens. This actually raised a question with me about what other third party lenses are supported, especially the Samyang 85mm f1.4 RF lens tested earlier on in this channel, which has caught my eye. I ordered an R6 and, assuming support for corrections is the same for both the R5 and R6, I wondered if it might be possible to test this, given that he Samyang RF lens is still around off-course. Thanks very much in any case.
