      Same. If there's one thing I've learnt about Chris from his channel, other than that his wife loves him dearly (see the way she looks at him even with a camera in his hand) is that he's a stickler for thoroughness. He'd rather be last but with substance rather than first with nothing to say.

      same - and "photographers" that actually use and review the camera for Photography aka Stills Photography and not Videography or Filmmaking, if i want to get top brass in cinecams i'd buy a RED ... but i want a compact STILLS camera and reviews that not only show the addon feature of being able to record video - but use it for its primary function - taking stills.

    I've seen a lot reviews about this camera but this was one of the better ones. Your mastery of photography and tech details is so good that you don't have to try so hard like a lot of other reviewers. Instead, you just pointed out the key features and issues. Nice work! Can't wait to put this camera to the test. One question: do you notice any appreciable difference in the color of images straight out of this camera compared to the EOS R?

I don't think I've ever bought a lens that you haven't tested.

      @mikldude9376 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah , not bad for a now 5 plus year old camera , the thing that comes to mind looking at all these camera reviews to me is that , all cameras have their strong and weak points , while it is easy to get carried away with the latest and greatest wizz bang models(and the grass is always greener .... ) , , if you have an old model that is still competent and with a good lens , you can still get great images and media .
      I look at some of the good photo`s i have taken with my A73 , and i see no reason too spend 4 or 5 grand , or 6.5 grand in this case on another new camera body , and then a lens or two and in my region that in all honesty is only going to give very fractional improvement in image quality for the most part unless you are a pro or blowing up to poster size to sell or pixel peeping .

    R5 dynamic range is 1.3 Stops better than my Eos R,it is also 0.2 better than Z7 and A7r4,R5 is monster,it has very clean shadows...this is not Dynamic test range that you have done in your video ,you have only tested the highligts recovery,shadow recovery is another story with R5,and also R5 and R6 does not have the faulty sensor as R and 5d mark IV which produces pretty bad banding into the long exposure-exposed for the hightligts photos.

Best reviews on YT!!

  • @Axonteer
    @Axonteer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Hey Chris - your review is actually the first "full" review ive seen so far - the others i watch (Jared Polin and Tony Northrup) all only focussed on the video features so far and are holding back their full review - yet im only interested in the "stills" part of the camera - while owning my 6Dmkii now for 2.5 years i never took a single video with it :D ...
    The only downside i see with the r5 is that its so prohibitivly expensive, clocking in a 4580$ here in switzerland (thats with the mandatory EF adapter), technically i could afford it but it feels very "wasty" - yet the R6 with its 20mp feels somehow... held back by the 20mp for a landscape photographer like me. I crop often, as in always, at least 20% and thats just format change... I hope that they will lower the price in a year or so to something reasonable. that said, this comment comes from a hobbyist and not someone that earns money with his photography, so my way of rating things is very different and price has a value of its own.
    Still greate review as always!
    I just hope one day youll show us how you do your focus char test on those 600mm lenses, or is your garden just so long? :-D

I even heard several of these pundits say that it can do 3-10 minutes it will be a success, and then when cry because it isn't unlimited. What a bunch of whiny babies.

      @alexaudiovisuals 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The problem isnt, that it overheats, the problem is, that the overheating is fake. I will overheat even if completely cooled and even after shotting only fotos it wont allow you to film anymore but you can trick it by changing the date and removing the battery without turning it off and all timers will reset until it actually overheats, which will even have a new different overheating icon. This is just pure BS and people are rightfully upset.

      Agree, I don't think anyone would thank Canon if their R5 melted down because they were not cautious. I'm a Canon shooter for many a year but I agree they pushed the video specs too much and it just played into the 'Canon Cripple Hammer' theory Like Chris said it should have been marketed as a '5D Mk V' with a bump in video specs. For me it would be a great stills camera but I object to the $1=£1 then add another £300 for the R5. It can drop in price to a fair price over 2-3 years as far as I'm concerned. As I've never had IBIS and I'm a Landscales shooter the R is fine for me and allows me time tog et into the RF lenses.

      Bingo. Many were saying the 8K would be a 30 second burst, or 4k 120 would not have AF. Then they got much more than that and complained. Then these same complainers (like Camera Conspiracies) got the cameras and were unable to get them to overheat in their extensive use.

    Its the best camera I have ever used. If you shoot in ambient temps of 65 degrees F or less - you likely will never overheat the camera. Even in 8K. For long form recording I point a small and silent usb powered fan at the ports, and it will record in all modes forever that way. Even in ambient temps up to about 80 degrees F.

      Christopher Frost Photography Yes. I have personally tested it myself. Many others as well. Multiple posts with pictures of times on the Canon Rumors Discord. I have filled my 512GB Cf Express Card after shooting over one hour of 8k IPB Video in a 79 degree room, with a silent USB fan pointed at the ports. I have repeated this test many times. It also works with 4kHQ, and 4K 60. I shot 4 sequences of 4K 120 this way and stopped because who needs 30 total minutes or more of continuous 4K 120. Many others have not even needed the fan if they shoot in 70 degree F or cooler. See the Ordinary Filmmaker. This is all with firmware 1.1. Also the TH-cam channel No Life has posted his videos with a small fan essentially recording 8k forever.

    Did the Mechanical Shutter vertical blurring bug ever get addressed in subsequent firmware? If you shoot burst mode does it only affect the first exposure in the burst sequence or do all exposures in the burst suffer from vertical blur? Was it only with the 1/100th of a second shutter speed that you saw this bug?

    With a good LP-E6N battery, you also can achieve the 12 fps! They may not last as long as an NH battery, but in a pinch, they are useful! I hope you find a way to retest those RF lenses you looked at on the R, as there are a few features that are missing in some of them. For example, on the r5, there is that icon for IS that is enhanced on the r5 due to IBIS (I think) and you get the "hand+" icon in the VF rather than just the "hand". I think, IIRC, that this (hand+) means the two are working together. I had assumed this were true for all RF lenses, but apparently not. That feature does not work with the RF 24-105 F/4L or the RF 70-200 F/2.8L but it does work with the new RF 100-500 F/4.5-7.1L lens. So, I guess the combined IS (hand+) only works with RF lenses released recently and after/with the R5/R6.

      @@kenjiyamamoto9499 You are right:
      Canon did some very smart moves defining the RF mount's specifications (as they did 30 years ago with the EF mount).
      And they are going "all in" using the opportunities of this mount, in part dismantling the competitors. Up to now the most exceptional example is the RF 70-200 2.8. This alone gives in most professionals' bag one pound less of weight and space for one extra lens compares to every other option on the market!
      Just: waiting does not help too much: The prices of RF glas are the very most stabile in the market.
      Yes, street prices for bodies are falling. But I experience now close to 2 years of great photography with the EOS R and a slowly growing set of RF glass, possibly the 2 best of my years in photography. I am ready to invest in the next generation as well to hold the R as 2nd body.
      BTW: Sony's mount is the worst FF mount in the market now. Just there is no smooth path to get rid of legacy as Canon had the chance with adapting EF to R bodies - EF lenses did never perform better than today adapted to R-bodies. Canon had solved a problem comparable to Sony's today 30 years ago ....
      Please do not misunderstood me: Sony did a lot of smart moves to change the business out of a basically desolate position, they have my full respect! But nobody can beat physics. And physics tells Sony's mount has optical (and other) limitations.

    Here's a thought about stabilization tests. Rather than just testing the maximum shutter speed of the camera, stabilized, and compare that to the reciprocal rule, also test the camera unstabilized. The reason for this is that you are assuming you will get a sharp image with the reciprocal rule shutter speed, which is often untrue on high megapixel cameras.
    For instance, say you are shooting on a 50mm lens. You find that, with stabilization, you get sharp images at around 1/25, so you conclude the camera has 1 stop of stabilization. However, if you were to test the camera unstabilized, you may find out that you only get sharp images at around 1/200, so you are actually getting 3 stops of stabilization, not just 1.
    The reciprocal rule is a thing from the film days, and although helpful on 24-megapixel cameras, they are a bit slow for higher megapixel cameras.
    Using this method also bypasses the idea of having stable hands or not, as your 'base metric' (unstabilized tests) is based on your own hands as well, not some rule.
    Edit: also, the way you said "Bokeh" at 14:06 is amazing :P

    16:20 Unless the Nikon Z50 and Canon M50 behave differently, it should be rather the opposite. Canon produces their most natural and best looking photos at the lowest contrast setting (because the default contrast setting is so bad, very unnatural), whereas low contrast settings don't always work well with the Nikon Z50 (it can look unnatural). The Z50 is able to make a slightly higher dynamic range visible than the M50, if the Z50 uses the strongest Active D Lighting setting. But the Z50 shows no preview of the Active D Lighting setting. If one doesn't use Active D Lighting due to this reason, then the Canon M50 + Highlight Tone Priority + lowest contrast setting + Fine Detail makes a higher dynamic range visible than the Nikon Z50.

After I ordered it I went into watching reviews on it and when I came across your channel I remembered I watched a lot of your videos back when I bought my first camera. Especially the weather sealing was one of my points I wasn‘t too sure about from reading it up on the internet. Thanks for talking about it too! So from all I heard in your video I‘m even more excited to get it into my hands and I‘m sure it will be a major upgrade over my 90D I‘ve used for a couple years now. Can‘t wait! Edit: I read the overheating issue in 8K video shooting has been adressed in firmware. Is it a different story now?

    I noticed on my R5 that stuck pixels (or are they hot pixels?) appear whenever the shutter speed is set to below 1/10 sec with a black image (lens cap on), and get more evident the slower the shutter speed - most noticeable at 30 sec shutter. Any shutter speed above 1/10 sec and faster, they completely disappear. This leads me to believe perhaps they're hot pixels, not stuck pixels? Interestingly, they appear on the EVF and LCD even before taking a picture. Does anyone have this as well?

    Honestly, that A7R2 footage looks the worst by far! There is an illusion of detail, but it's probably softer than the low quality 4K on the R5. But the A7R2 footage has so much ugly digital sharpening and low-bitrate artifacting, it's really quite ugly by comparison. The low quality 4K R5 footage with some sharpening looks almost as good as the HQ mode, and much more natural than the A7R2 footage (and again, no low bitrate artifacting like the Sonys)

    Thanks for waiting a month to gather your thoughts for your review. I prefer this over straight-out-of-the-box type reviews, where the reviewers always seem overly excited and sometimes insincere. I think I'll be trading in my EOS R and buying an R5 to replace it, I'm so glad they got rid of the stupid multifunction bar and replaced it with a joystick! That was easily my biggest annoyance with the EOS R (I had a 5D MK2 prior to it). I'm mostly a stills shooter so the R5's shortcomings in video mode don't really affect me.
