I actually had a very considerate rider who texted me that she is "going to the airport, is that okay?" (airport is 23 miles from the resort town I drive in.) Very nice of her to ask. First class.

One of my favorite ways to get a passenger to cancel a ride I have accidentally accepted or that is farther a pickup than to drop off is to start driving then park the vehicle for a couple moment's and text the rider and notify him that the car has just caught a flat. When making a turn I hit a curb. Very few will ask questions and cancel the ride immidately. Don't charge the rider, and it doesn't count against you either which is the main objective. Today I just canceled a ride where I drove 16mins to location of pickup, the rider stopped texting, I went as far as calling and he didn't answer. I messaged him to reply or answer call if not I would cancel and charge. I waited 10 minutes. I canceled, charged him and went on about my night. I know there are 2 options you can select to cancel that won't count against your acceptance rate but I forgot which two.

Uber and Lyft should email riders about when to call for a ride, I should NOT be waiting more than 2 minutes for a rider. Specially in airports, why would you order a car when you did not even pick up your luggage. I waste a lot of time waiting for people and fighting with traffic guards about waiting around

LOL yeah right! I drive a cab as well as Lyft/Uber and I was dispatched a run about three minutes away. When I arrived the guy said, “You took too long so I ordered Uber”....so then he decided to wait on an Uber.... growing up it was a standard 1/2 hour wait for a cab... this under five minutes, Oh! Under three minutes is ridiculous!

Oftentimes well really all the time Uber tries to trick its drivers. They rotate the map around to what you think is South is actually either east west or north. You're getting requests they're not transparent by not showing you the address they show a direction and they spin the map around and so you accept it thinking it's going in the direction you are willing to go only to find out that it is not forcing you to cancel. And then Lyft you're doing something else with your phone just as a request comes in and they accept the trip for you when you don't mean to. I may be showing my age when I say this but it's like that Connect Four commercial when the boy says pretty sneaky sis LOL

On newer Lyft App, I don't see an option to send a text to the customer... just a call... When pax sends me a text, it shows up in small print, at the top of the screen, for just a moment. Hafta go to messaging to see what it said... not good when driving.

In the Oklahoma City market, with the Lyft, you must call the passenger before you can get the cancellation fee. Just sending a text message does not result in cancellation fee.

When a pax is heading to work, Waiting until you arrive at the pickup location to cancel is horrible and terrible business practice.. Especially when it's a scheduled ride through Lyft. I hate to cancel but I did cancel one on Saturday at an apartment complex. I was outside for more than 5 minutes. Even tried getting out and checking the inside courtyard of the apartment but could not see the rider anywhere. Shame as it was a long pick up.
I think they should show us the route before you accept. I know why they don't want to do that but I had a customer Saturday who was way out of town and he told me that two other drivers had accepted but then cancelled. This is a bad customer experience.

Hi, I'm a brand new driver. This past weekend I showed up at the requested location and the passenger never arrived. After waiting the required time and notifying the passenger, the Uber app allowed me to cancel the ride and I coded it as "rider no show". This happened on two occasions Saturday night. However, I did not receive the cancellation fee, it just says $0 in the earnings history. Should I notify Uber or am I missing something? Thanks

    • @Therideshareguy

If you wait till you arrive at a pick up location and then cancel it is absolutely horrible business practice and a terrible inconvenience for the customer. If you accept the trip take the trip ... no excuses. Personally I accept all trips in my small market as cherry picking rides isn’t very helpful here. tho I hear of drivers doing it all the time. I’d be willing to bet that two drivers in the same market one cherry picking and canceling trips and one who accepts all trips the one who accepts all will do better 90% of the time.

I do a similar tactic that Jay uses on Lyft. If I arrive to the rider's pick up location & see that their drop off is too far for me to go then I'll cancel. The problem with that is that Lyft catches on to it eventually & you will be threatened with deactivation.
I'm a full time driver & consistently (seldom do I miss it) hit the Power Driver Bonus (%90 Acceptance Rate). I've been put in timeout twice now. Lyft hates this shit but I do it during peak hours & to keep my ride count average high (between 2.5-3 per hour is the goal).

Lyft will usually give a warning if it is a ride over 30min or 45min when the ride is offered. However, it seems Uber gives no such warning as I picked up a ride the other day that I did not know until I slid them in the vehicle that it was an 80 mile ride. I was not happy about it as I had to drive the entire 80 miles back to my home market zone burning my gas and time thereby negatiing much of the profit that I made on the ride.

UberEats delivering McDonald's sucks for divers during late night hours. I've lost precious surge time and earnings because of McDonald's. It takes me 5- 10 minutes to get there. Then waiting in line for another 5-15 minutes to get to the drive in speaker to tell them I'm there for UberEats. Then another 5-10 minutes to get to the second window, where they finally tell me "The order isn't ready" "What do you mean it's not ready?" I'm like WTF? That's at least 15 minutes wasted earning 0-4 dollars at peak UberX earning time. This has happened to me more than a couple times. McDonald's should be banned from UberEats during peak UberX driving times.

I have had riders that I waited little longer for actually tell me they saw on the app that there was still two minutes left before the driver arrived to which I am SMFH thinking that two minutes means as a rider you should be out on the sidewalk looking for the driver......LOL

Five and drive. I use to arrive at the PU location for the pax and text them via the RideAustin or Fasten app (previously UBER when I worked Fort Hood). I had a pre-programmed five minute timer. Upon arrival, I would text. I would then wait 2.5 minutes and text again. Lastly, at 30 seconds, I would call the pax and inform them that I am here. This gave them ample time to tell me they were coming. Most of the time I'm forgiving if the pax at least replies. But at five minutes, if you don't answer my call, I cancel and drive off. Every ride I'm given means I'm the closest driver. So I accept all rides. If they can't wait for my arrival, then that's on the pax.

What happens if a driver cancels when the driver arrives at a destination accepts the ride and then cancels because the destination is too far or has too much traffic? Would your old price be locked in that you were quoted? If tis a prescheduled ride can you keep the quoted rate? If there is no driver in the area I Think the rider should be able to hold Uber/Lyft responsible if you scheduled a ride or requested a ride and there is no way for the rider to get to their destination.
I think the wait time should be more if you have a disability and need time to get the rest of your luggage out. I think the ADA will require Lyft/Uber to give more time.
My Mother had a driver who loaded up her luggage in her car(Lyft) she knew where she was going and that there was traffic. She then cancels the ride unloads the luggage and my Mom had to wait for a new driver luckily nearby but if it was not the case she could have run into more traffic. We scheduled the ride in advance. The poor excuse of the driver is that she needed to pikcup her Daughter. Well then why did you load the luggage in the car. When I told the driver to take her she got hostile with me and threatened to call the piolice when I was trying to stop her f rom unloading my Mother's bag as she accepted the ride and found out it was a long ride. I reported it to Lyft. I think this driver should be banned from the paltform.

same in NYC, why should uber get any cut on cancellations when they still make money on the next driver making the ride

Depends on when you signed up.

So Jay was cancelling on passengers-- starting trips, completing them without having given a ride. I'm sorry, but this is bullshit. Now we know why he was deactivated from Uber.

That's not what happened. Jay would start a ride with Lyft, arrive, realize the pax was going too far, and would cancel without charging the pax at all.

The Rideshare Guy well that's bogus. This is why he is deactivated. You can't pull that shit. If someone did tyhat to me I'm getting them deactivated

Why not call at the 2 minute mark? Why not wait? Unless you have a cue it's the driver's loss

Uber doesn't want you to have high cancellation but do they really think going 8 to 10 miles away to pick someone up who's only going 3 to 4 miles is profitable and .80 cent doesn't compensate for no pick up fee driving that far and then it's not like you can sit there after you drop them off and get a near by fare no is you life in smaller markets you have to drive 8 to 10 miles is not longer back to where the traffic is to continue getting fares they try to come at you with shady practices like a rider felt uncomfortable with your driving never ever saying what trip or anything so you can review what you did wrong on that trip to fix it just these anonymous claims and I only here these things when riders are complaining about fares being high so they try to call Uber to get a free ride using you as a scape goat and then kids are using the app alot in my city to go school saying they're 18 when most are not so I pull up and you got a book bag on yeah I cancel on you I'm not your parent plus the minimals needs to go up too many 2.25 cent rides that's so pathetic really Uber I think you guys will take anything you just getting paid no sweat of your back.. They say we are contractors but these guidelines are more like regulations of a job and riders need to be I.D. and the hygeine in my city is putrid so many blk folks smell like sewage some whites as well but more people of color I never thought I would say this.. When I first started driving the clientele seemed more high end now I feel like I'm getting the bottom of the barrel on a regular basis.
