    Guys, keep in mind:
    1. You can get deactivated for having too high of a cancellation rate so I wouldn't do this more than 5-10% of the time. It's really only something you can do once in a while.
    2. Jay screens his passengers because he is in search of SHORT rides to hit his Uber quest bonus, ie get an extra $100 for doing 50 trips. So in this scenario, you can lose out on a bonus if you get a couple long rides and aren't able to get enough short ones in time.
    2. This strategy definitely isn't for everyone but as independent contractors, you should be entitled to this info ahead of time. Plumbers, electricians, etc all get to set their own prices but as a rideshare driver, you don't. This is a huge advantage to Uber/Lyft since they can effectively send you unprofitable jobs and force you to take them. A plumber would never drive an hour to someone's house, do a job for $25 and then drive an hour home.

      This is 100% on point. Thank you Jay for illuminating this for drivers. Truth is: 1) if you're driving full time, your volume is high, you're canceling very few rides, therefore acceptance rate is still very high. If you're part-time, make sure that you're acceptance rate is decent ( as Harry mentioned.) 2) There will be a driver right behind you in 30 seconds that will happily take the ride. 3) Pax in large market areas are beginning to understand this or aren't even conscious of it happening since cancellations on the app happen for a variety of reasons. 4) Many Pax are habitually late and will enter the ride apologizing if the ride has started and are HAPPY that you've "waited" for them. It's all about your rapport with Pax 5) This is an increasing phenomenon that is illuminating a larger and more primary issue: mutual respect for drivers who more often than not, bust their ass taking pax to destinations safely.       Sorry Harry, but I had to chime in on this. I think the advice this Jay is giving is absolutely BS, showing people how to cheat the system. Uber and Lyft should allow drivers to see the destination and allow them to make the decision, but you and I know that is not the case. If a person is having a stroke or heart attack and needs to urgently get to the ER or hospital or 24 hour help center and does not have anyone to drive them, they often use Uber. Now imagine someone is on the way there, two streets away (using Jay's method) opts out because the trip to the hospital was to short for them, or an inconvenience , or not lucrative. Then something happens, or a person misses a flight, or misses a business meeting. Seen it all. I think this video is sending the wrong messages and those drivers who are accepting the good and bad trips, are paying the price . They are dumped with the trips other drivers will not take. I also it opens up a huge opportunity for class action law firms. Uber having 5,9 million rider downloads, how many people are using Jay's strategy. Ultimately the market corrects itself again because drivers with high cancellation rates do get deactivated, but what it does do is disrupt supply and demand. You have such a good reputation to protect and I will never judge you on this one video, but I have lost all respect for drivers like Jay or "Rideshare Genius" who think this strategy is good and perfectly legal. On another note, I am putting together the first Rideshare Summit this summer with numerous sponsors and would like you to be a guest speaker.

      A driver who does not want to take an unprofitable ride is not to blame! Your concern is valid though: mobility is a serious issue for certain groups of people such as elderly, poor, people in need of urgent transport etc, but forcing a driver to take on the cost is not the right answer neither is it a viable solution. Hiding the destination address from drivers is simply causing more delays for both passengers and drivers. It would be much faster if a driver can decline a request right when s/he sees a ping so that it will be rerouted to another driver.
      Also, if a passenger is having a heart attack s/he should call 911 instead. Uber/Lyft drivers are not trained or fit to handle emergency situations.
      Rideshare Summit is a great idea. I hope we can access the agenda, and a video of the speakers.

    If Uber made it mandatory to tip your driver at least $5 on short trips, i guarantee the cancellation rate would drop 50% at least.

    I would definitely do the LYFT method since you wouldn’t have to start the trip to see the destination. Uber on the other hand, only once in a while would I do it since I would have to actually start the trip. UBer and LYFT should just show the destination. Especially with the over saturation of drivers, what one driver doesn’t want, the next will.

    I have read some of the comment here. This strategy is something I only use when I absolutely can not make a long ride, or I may lose out on a bonus. Uber and Lyft should give us the info ahead of time, but they don't so we can get creative for the profitability of our business. I have been doing it for 3 years and 23,000 rides so this is nothing new, or blatant, or controversial. My ratings is always above 4.95. As long as you keep your acceptance rate above 90 percent, you are all right. I can also tell you that when I pick someone up who has been cancelled on, that passenger tends to be very grateful to have a ride. I ask what happened, and then explain why the driver might have cancelled. It is a good conversation starter, which can lead to a tip.

    Here's an analogy, say you are an independent contractor as a handyman.
    Don't you want to know what the job is and how much it pays before you take it?
    If it was Uber/Lyft you might accept a job, you show up, and you have to paint the person's house for $20.
    And then they come up with the excuse that if people knew the deal, no one would take it and you're leaving the person stranded?!?!?
    NO! You just adjust the price where it's worth it for someone to take the job!!!

      Good analogy, I worked a few real independent contractor jobs and driving for uber/lyft is not being a independent contractor. The only independence with uber/lyft is the flexibility and noting else...Ex uber/lyft driver here.

    When Uber ends their childish charade of hiding the destination, and
    treating independent contractors like employees, then drivers will not
    have to resort to using effective counter measures and methods to
    determine the destination!
    Drivers are independent contractors, (even though in name only, when convenient to Uber, so they don't have to pay benefits, or taxes), so drivers can not be forced to accept any
    rides!
    As an independent contractor, you should never be forced to drive anywhere!

My dad was a general contractor for years and he's never been forced to accept a job blindly not knowing anything about the details of what it's going to be. You're no longer independent if you're having someone else above you giving you instructions on what jobs to accept. Makes no sense

      So almost all short trips will become hard for passengers to get a ride? No. Passengers deserve to get the best service possible. We as drivers should help all passengers, both lucrative and not. (Except for star ratings, because that shows the quality rider)

    Maybe they should utilizing bidding like offers, display the trip infos to all drivers around the riders and the first driver who takes it gets the ride, if no drivers want it, increase the price until someone wants it, transparent and free market now this make rideshare drivers truly am independent contractor

      SteelCityDriver the algorithms favor the platforms for sure, but these are consumer focused companies and getting a car to someone in 5 minutes or less takes priority over passing a driver a shitride.

      If you get deactivated for canceling or refusing or not driving enough you can take them to small claims court 99% of time you will win judgement they will never mess with you again you get full judgement ammount

    This is literally the best way to cherry pick a ride especially when uber out here cutting our per mile rate pay, I honestly do not feel bad about doing so since Uber cannot even give us a fair pay.

    I always do that. Sometimes people are going to NYC and its really not worth it for me.

      @@mrcharles4636 if you cancel too many once you've arrived to location, then cancelled, yes you will be DEACTIVATED. They warn you, and if you keep it up, you'll be delivering food and not passengers

    I know a few people have tried this method and they got they app deactivated not a good idea, I think the best approach is once you get there before you start the trip ask the rider " what's your destination or where I'm taking you, or is your trip out of the city limits" and then you can safely cancel without being penalized, that would be the right approach..

    While I understand why you want to scream rides, I think this way of doing it is kind of shitty and here's why. The rider can see where you are on their app and they can see that you are heading their way so they think they are about to get picked up. Then when you get close suddenly they get notified that the ride was canceled. You have just completely wasted their time by driving almost to where they are and then canceling. If there was a way to screen rides without doing this that would be fine but doing this sucks.

      Short rides add up towards bonuses..... a quick hop does achieve that goal. Stop being lazy. At least your not sitting in dead stop traffic on the 405.

    Cool video Harry can we also use this feature at the airport like if we know based on what the app tells us like if there are not many other ubers/lyfts at the airport? I would say have both apps turned on and decide which ride is the better ride. If you get a lyft first and then an uber pops up right after because you forgot to shut uber off to just accept both of them to see which is better? Is it ok to cancel as long as you don't call the rider asking them where they are going. I think it's against the community guidelines to try to ask the rider to cancel.

    I have been so busy and preoccupied I didn't realize why my long rides had so much info added to them whereas before the long trip notification was vague. Thank you for this helpful reminder!!!!! I love long trips but earlier in the day if possible.
    My current weekly Quest is a bonus that pays the weekly payment towards my car and so far I've been getting them every week (probably with an exception for this week because I've been out sick) but your video answered several questions I just haven't investigated with either platforms.
    My ratings are 4.97-Uber & 4.99-Lyft with 100% acceptance rate on both. 😊

    Previously the "45+ mins (long trip)" notification was all the screening I did. When I got that notification I'd accept the ride and then call the passenger to see where they are going because I won't go to certain places. I also won't accept those long rides towards the end of my time driving for the night. However, Lyft removed the long ride notification and so now I'm going to start doing this with my Lyft rides. The downside is that I may have driven 10 minutes to pick them up and I get nothing for it which really sucks.

      I asked how it went, ofcourse you can see where the passenger is going if your actually taking them as well.
      But if you cancel the rides.... how did it go?
      My point is, you will be DEACTIVATED for excessive cancellations. Guaranteed!
      Yes, you can cancel a few, but you will be warned then DEACTIVATED if it continues.
      But if your starting the trip before the passenger gets in, then actually take the passenger, more power to you. No harm.

    Im thinking about applying this technique today..... Im wondering about starting the ridw early with Uber, in previous videos i believe some one recommended not starting the Uber ride early because the rider could give a low rating if you chose to accpet, doesn't that lead to bad ratings? As the rider feels perhaps they have been scammed because you started the ride early? Any feed back please? Any one?

    I mean acceptance rate is ok, but if you cancel some rides will this lead to deactivation?..me I used mystro to filter long ride, it will ignore or let you know this is a long ride and you have an option to accept it. So far this is the best setting option from mystro. Great vid by the way!

    Do you worry about your cancellation rate going over 4% and not being able to see the direction and approximate duration from screening? Do you have any tips/tricks to be able to screen and keep your numbers in check?

    Thank you Mr Ride share crusader for showing me “ Ride Screening”. Very clever. Today Uber gave me a job that goes into Congestion Charge zone 5:40 pm. I had to pay £11.40. The fare was £12.50. After 6 pm no charge. ( in London).

    Hi so I drive for Lyft. And lyft did the same exact thing to me and I lost $105 because of that bonus stuff and then giving me extra long rides to not meet the bonus. And so now I think about all the rides that I will get before I accept them as well.

    Safety becomes an issue for me when I have to spend that much time on the phone (while driving). Any tips/tricks to minimize this? Sometimes I think it is just better to pull over and then do what you mentioned in the app to cancel the ride.

      I just got buried with these tonight when we had really bad snow. UberX was quoting 30 minute wait times, so they would try Pool. At first I would try and pick the next pax up if they were along the route (which they are supposed to be), but after circling a parking lot, texting, and attempting to call (multiple times that went straight to v/m), I just gave up on it. Under normal driving conditions, I would make much more of an effort, but the constant stop and go from pool requests and being diverted off of major streets just added risk in getting in an accident or becoming a disabled vehicle myself.

      Yes but also from the drivers perspective if you just drove 7 minutes to get to them and they are only going 1 block over I don’t want to take them. It’s not worth $2.25 for a lot of these rides

      Generally, since Uber now charges up front, no. It makes no difference in what they are charged.

      So that’s a good point, and some may, but if you let them know with upfront pricing they will pay the same thing either way, then they probably won’t get mad and leave you a lower rating.

      I've started plenty of rides before the customer got in the car and they've never gotten upset. They never even bring it up especially late at night when they've had drinks in. Last time I did it to a customer it was a couple and the guy was just telling me he made out with the lady he was with and that he liked my car. Where I live any way, people just want to get in your car and don't give a shit once they get in your car.

    Your video explains to me why I a passenger rated five stars, got cancelled on 3 times then was charged for a cancellation while standing curbside. My 5 Stars came about because I'm polite and a good tipper. I'm rethinking the ride share.

    I have had consistent success sticking to a pre plan. I do both uber and lyft and start by programing to the airport then taking a trip out of the airport (long trip only) then work the area where I'm taken then at the end of the day I program for rides back home. I consistently make over 100 dollars each day double fr. sa. I do not accept a rider with a score below 4.8 and I never accept a ride 5 min away from me unless "long trip".

    Forget about using UberPro as an effective means to screen trips. Initially the feature that showed the duration of the trip and the direction of the trip was a reward for being an UberPro diamond. To be eligible you had to maintain an acceptance rate of 85% based on the three previous months of activity. That made it a very effective tool for working only with rides that you wanted.
    Now Uber has expanded the feature to all levels of UberPro. They also made one critical change. Instead of keeping eligibility for the feature based on the three previous months acceptance rate, eligibility is now based on the prior 7 days. They did this *without announcement.* They didn't even initially tell their support staff who thought it was a software glitch causing drivers with normally high acceptance ratings to suddenly plummet.
    What that means is you can only ignore/decline 1 in 10 trips before the feature is immediately disabled. And because its a rolling 7 day period you can't try to balance one day versus another. The feature will be disabled until the day affecting your acceptance rate drops off.
    Also cancellation rates must stay at 4% or lower. But since (at the moment) they are still based on the 3 previous months, you have more flexibility in retaining the right percentage.
    Bottom line, the additional trip info is of very limited value *if* you want to maintain the feature in UberPro.
    So you have to make a choice. Accept nearly every ride just to see the trip info in order to occasionally use it for your benefit. Or just say to hell with the feature and closely monitor your cancellation rate to maintain all the other benefits of UberPro.
    The big print giveth and the fine print taketh away. Or to put it another way, different day, same old Uber.

      ll jjww the per minute fee is what .10-.15 cents a minute they’ll be fine unless you do it miles from the pickup 1000 ft and a minute or two won’t be noticed or cause for concern your total “free money “ would be in the range of .50 cents as long as you don’t get some asshole that takes 10 minutes to come to the car imo you should cancel on them anyway for not being considerate of your time

    Ok so I drive. I accept the ride then cancel because it’s a short no money ride shouldn’t your next step be to exit the app so that same rider doesn’t get you again by default?
    Also, what’s to stop the riders from putting in long long rides (looks $$$so we accept it) only to have the rider change the end destination the minute they get in the car (to their true short destination)?

    Also with Uber Pro-Diamond level you can see how long the ride is before you accept it. Also don't reject pool rides as they are a great way to get to your bonus.

    Bruh, cancellations will get you deactivated quickly. I cancelled 2 rides on New Year’s Eve and got a warning ⚠️ for it telling me I faced the posible temporary or permanent deactivation for this actions. You can decline requests but not accept and then cancel rides.

    It’s interesting to get a driver’s perspective. It’s frustrating when a driver apparently cancels and Uber or Lyft assigns another driver, which sometimes delays pickup. Since I constantly take screenshots, I reach out to the ride share company and get uncoupled from the driver.
    I have wondered why drivers start a trip before they arrive. It hasn’t happened a lot recently. If a driver does it, I tend to give them 1 star and no tip.

    You could also just plug the pick up address in right away and hit arrive early when accepting the trip to see so you don’t waste your time driving to that destination, then just message the passenger with your actual ETA as it doesn’t make sense to drive 5-10 miles if your only going to be driving someone 1-5 miles.

    Lyft will trick you. I've had passengers listed at 15-20 min away and I accept, then the pickup location changes and obviously the route does too. The 15 min pickup time changes as well always to somewhere 5 minutes or less. After I noticed this more than once I started asking the passengers if they entered the location incorrectly and if they changed the pickup location, they each said no and they are not sure why it did this because they enter their address correctly.

    Sorry for the lengthy reply and question.
    Hey Jay.I drive mainly for Uber in my market and I'm part of the Uber Pro Beta in DC. I really like Uber's feature that tells you how long the ride is. Now it doesn't show you the direction of the ride, but it will give you the travel time. My concern is that if I start the ride and cancel it, it counts on a 3 month average that has to fall I believe under 10% to stay in the Uber Pro Program. If nothing else, that feature alone is worth keeping the Pro status. If you hit the decline, then that cancellation percentage is not affected. There are other uncontrolled reasons for drivers to cancel, but if you use your method on a regular basis, I think you run the risk of losing your pro status as the 3 months are coming to an end..
    Also another question is that if you use the "other" category as a reason. Won't Uber charge the rider if its taken you more than the allotted time to get there? I typically use the "Don't Charge the Rider" option since it was my decision to cancel the ride for my personal reasons. You should get your friend to test out that theory to see if the rider is charged, which could then generate a complaint from the rider. I would think it might trigger an investigation from Uber to see why you may have multiple refund request which could then shine light of you starting a trip before you get the rider. Don't know if that would sit well with Uber.
    Please don't get me wrong, I'm not an Uber proponent. I just think your Uber method could cause problems...Yours or anyone's thoughts??

      But doesn't Uber Pro enable the driver with better upfront information that wouldn't require them to cancel in the first place? Thus it eliminates (outside of extenuating circumstances) the scenario that this original post is trying to address? Maybe Uber is starting to listen to drivers, and reacting to the incredible turn-over rate for them? (That last sentence might be wishful thinking...) :)

    I remember last year when they told us the destination ahead of time in certain markets they tested this out. I accepted nearly 100% of the rides anyway.. not sure why they stopped it

    For the CTB or number of ride bonuses, Uber/Lyft should have a way for long drives to count as multiple trips. For instance, a ride over 20 minutes could count as 2 trips and a ride over 45 minutes could count as 3 (or 30 minutes/60 minutes, etc.). It is frustrating to get long rides all day long and make no real progress towards the bonuses. It can suck with the CTB as well since one long ride could mean you don't get an opportunity for another CTB, or it takes you out to a place that doesn't have a CTB even though you are still in the time window for the bonuses. You can complete a CTB outside of the original area, but they should allow you to start a new one as long as you've continued to stay online, even if the area doesn't have a CTB.

    I was just like you; I've gave rides to everybody - I don't discriminate... But after a while, I have had really bad quality passengers... Some of them are rude, some of them disrespect you, some of them try to punk you, some of them throw up half a quart of food mixed with liquid with the smell of alcohol onto your seats and floors...shieeet man, it's MY car, I can choose to give rides whomever I want. I usually follow these rules but these are my rules...
    1. I don't turn on my app in the hood/ghetto/projects at night time. (Economically challenged neighborhoods)
    2. When I arrive at the pickup location and if I see a group of people holding up a person that is passing in and out of consciousness I know that person is drunk and the chances of that person throwing up in my car is very very high. And I usually just drive off.
    3. When I arrive at the pickup location and if I see a bunch of loud belligerence obnoxious (usually drunks) people I just drive off and cancel the ride, or I just drive off and have them cancel.

      If u do it keep your cancellations under 10% with uber and under 5% with lyft

    Seems to me that this would only be beneficial if the vast majority of your trips are very close to your current location. For example you only drive two or three minutes to each pick up before finding out where they're going by doing this procedure. It certainly would not work in many other cities where your average time to pick up is 8 to 10 minutes. at that point you've deadheaded that eight or 10 minutes to then cancel on the person which doesn't make any sense at all.
    the only advantage I can see is if it was truly going in a direction that you really didn't want to go. The market that I work in that's never really an issue at all because I can get all the way across the city in 15 minutes.
    I also wonder about how this affects tips for the next driver and takes you a ride that you canceled. The passenger is certainly aware of when you cancel on them and they are assigned a new driver. At least if they're paying attention at all because the name and make and model of the vehicle changes.

    I’ve been doing Lyft for a few days so far and learned a few things
    1) Drivers in not great areas hardly if ever tip
    2) The customers that want you to stop somewhere and “they’ll be right back” 10 mins later l leave (was being way too nice) and I get a call “where did you go”? Costing me money
    3) Turn off your app before you finish your last ride because another will pop up sometimes the second you drop off the current rider
    4) People who want to smoke in my car. No you can’t burn a hole in my leather seats or make my car stink for the next customer.
    I’m not sure if I’ll continue, not only is it wear and tear on your car on the outside (tires, breaks etc) it’s wear and tear on the inside (people on your seats, car doors constantly opening and closing etc).

    I wish there was a way to see ride length at the start when you have to drive 15+ miles to do a rinky-dink 2 mile ride (doesn't even cover the cost of gas).. At least Uber pays for over 10 minutes/miles of travel to passenger. Lyft does not. You can only see the info if your acceptance rate is 90% or above.

    I hate the acceptance rating falls, even though you have the option. I dont take requests in bad areas of chicago its not worth my safety for $3 so i decline it then lyft lowers my acceptance rating after 58% i dont get any rides rest of week its shity

    I guess I am of a different mindset here, I think not knowing the destination until I pick up passengers is part of the fun! Only rides I never accept are pools. I am not a bus driver!
