There's a new, savvy strategy out there where you can earn more than driving. While it's not banned by Uber, I'm not sure if I'd ever use this strategy. What do you think about it?
Btw, Rideshare Timer is a cool app that will allow you to track cancellation fees and make sure that you get paid. Just one cancellation fee and the app pays for itself! www.therideshareguy.com/ridesharetimer

Why do you need a timer isn't there already one in the app counting down for you? For Lyft you have to call passenger and if they don't answer after 5 minutes you can cancel and will get cancellation fee. Same with Lyft line but it's only the 1st passenger and they only have 1.5 minutes.

  • @JustinBaker2567
    @JustinBaker2567 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

This only works well if the ride request comes from close by. If you drive 10 minutes to meet someone, wait 5 minutes, 15 minutes of time for a $3.75 uber cancel fee or $5 for a lyft cancel fee is not a good return on your time. 1 minute of driving and 5 minutes of waiting for a cancel fee is not so bad.

    The passenger:
-Has your phone number, they can call you if they are trying to find you.
-Can text you to make contact.
-Should be waiting at the spot where they have said they are.
-Has an entire 5 minutes of time to try contacting you if there is any confusion.
If the driver has been sitting parked on the dot on the map for a full 5 minutes, and the passenger hasn't bothered to try to find you or come out or contact you via text or phone call, I see no reason why the onus should be on the driver to bend over backwards to find them.
I've taken up this method, and later when I go back and check, they were usually silly little minimum fare rides around the block. I think of it as a training exercise. The passenger needs to learn that if they have requested an Uber, when the uber driver arrives they should be there waiting for the car, not keeping their driver sitting around waiting on them for more than 5 minutes, it's just inconsiderate and rude.

I 100 percent use the cancellation method but not as a scam. The riders know your eta and they still aren't prepared when you arrive. If you not ready to go don't request me. Uber passengers more then Lyft passengers are infamous for this. Be ready and on time or Be left! Time is money, literally

  • @Gilbeezyskit
    @Gilbeezyskit 8 ปีที่แล้ว +29

There should be an automatic charge once the rider has been notified. Instead of me cancelling after 5 minutes, a $1 a minute charge or something of that sort. It would quickly stop people from ordering before they're actually ready, and it would compensate drivers for the wait. I've had riders text me and say it's ok to start the ride since they're going to be a couple minutes late and they don't want me to be unpaid for my time, but it's still only 16¢ a minute

    • @Gilbeezyskit
      @Gilbeezyskit 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

To clarify, I mean the charge should kick in 5 minutes after the notification, not right away.

I have a $10 cancellation fee in my area. I'll definitely be doing this. It's not my responsibility to ensure that people fulfill their end of the service agreement. Customers are not children. They know exactly when I'll be there. If they don't have the courtesy to show up for a ride they requested, they should pay the fee. My time is valuable, and I don't enjoy being jerked around. We don't get paid enough for that crap, especially considering that Uber provides no benefits and guarantees nothing to their "partners".

Oh oh oh but wait there's more... Children do sign up on both platforms and Uber and Lyft does nothing about ensuring adolescence aren't on the platform. So another strategy one can employee is turn on your Lyft or Uber app and go into heavily populated areas where schools are located and employ the underage passenger cancellation and collect your $5 on Lyft and $3.75 on Uber.

I arrived at a warehouse late one night to pick up a pax. He comes outside and asks if I can wait 5 - 10 min (why request the ride, am I right?). I say in a loud clear voice, "I can wait 5, but NOT 10!" You know I cancelled and left after 5 min.

Hey, I've been at this a few months now and I'm not sure if you address this on your channel in another video. 1) How do you handle waiting on a busy downtown street if there are no parallel parking spots available and waiting blocks traffic flow? 2) How about red curbs/fire hydrants if the spot is in a fire lane? 3) What if the passenger calls you and tells you "I'm not at that location, I'm at X location instead"?. On Lyft you have to call the person before you can cancel for no-show. If they do respond how far are you willing to go away from the spot you are waiting to pick them up? (in my town it's most likely one block, up to a mile or two). 4) [More off-topic but on my mind] On Uber can the passenger see their rating before they rate you as a driver? If I start rating people lower who are not ready or make me wait 5 minutes during peak bar-closing time will they rate me lower in retaliation? Same question for things that irritate me like getting in and moving the seats around, getting in just after smoking cigarettes, yelling, shaking the car, not putting their seatbelts on (seriously wtf people!), hitting the car/seats/windows, throwing up, touching me, or slamming the door. They shouldn't be on the same level as a calm, respectful folks who waited on the curb for me. 5) For driver cancelation, do we get the fee for other reasons such as underage, too many passengers, etc? Does that depend on waiting past the 2min countdown+3 minutes of wait time the same as a no-show?

i appreciate Uber's texting feature, which Lyft doesn't allow: Lyft's has a "written protocol" (maybe not a 'rule') that suggests when that 2-5min is up, that the driver make an attempt to phone the rider before cancelling.

I have been using this strategy to good effect especially on pool and minimum fare trips. I don't call or text. I find it's a good way to teach the riders to actually be at the correct pick up location and not do they're makeup on my time.

How do you get the guaranteed pay? I'm online anywhere from 9-10 hours every day and mostly only get rides on Fridays and Saturdays. Today the only "ride" I've had was a guy who said he didn't request a ride after I got there and couldn't find him and had to call and text before finally getting a hold of him and then had to cancel the ride. I'm not making as much as I'd hoped.

I've been a Lyft/Uber driver for going on two years here in the Charleston, SC area and am at 3000 riders thus far. I have also spent my whole life in the service industry which adds up to 48 years. Grocery, 16 years, uniform sales 10 years, my own lawncare business 10 years, Bosch 5 years, military 6 years, police 1 year. The point is that this is a service industry. I focus on customer service, not them serving me. I will wait the appropriate time, making sure I communicate with the customer/rider about the limited time available to wait. I make many more tips and my payout is 99% of the time what I earned honestly. Even though we have options as drivers, it is in our best interest to be as honest as possible, Carma is not a good thing and it is created and put in the system to give to those who deserve it.

+Arturo Vargas With Lyft, you are required to call in order to get the cancelation fee but not with Uber. The only thing I see happening is this backfiring when u get the same passenger either that day or down the road. It may effect your rating if you cancel on enough people. I know it sucks waiting but there is a thing called Karma. So I would call before cancelling if they do not answer the phone then cancel. You can at least said you tried to communicate before cancellation.

Lyft app doesn't seem to have a text option :-( . only call. For Lyft you have to call 1st before hitting cancel. One time I was on the interstate goong one direction when I accepted a ride request. I realize they are in the oposite direction and I have no way of turning around until the next exit. I was wishing they would notice and just cancel on me. Fortunately they did and I was pleasantly surprised to see I still made $5. Off that. I had no idea they get charged a fee for cancelling. I looked into it and if I drive within the apps estimated time frame after a certain time goes by and they cancel after lets say 5minutes I get paid for it. If not they dont get charged the fee.

I could definitely see taking advantage of this situation. Its easy to defend yourself, especially if you're picking up people in big apartment complexes that you don't know. You're navigation could have taken you to the west end of the complex but the entrance is on the the north end. You didn't know that, you wait around, you're passenger didn't come outside anyway and bam if you're lyft its 5 bucks in your pocket..
I guess I'm gonna have to have a pad and pen handy with me to note cancellations cause its easy to get caught up in another fare and the frustrations of a cancellation, and making money when you should note that you're entitled to a cancellation fee and you have to note the times, the rider etc for your paperwork..
In terms of the customer experience I'm not gonna feel sorry for them if they feel slighted. These are also the same customers who are tracking you on the app and can cancel on you at anytime for any reason, they know where you are and if they can't get themselves of their group ready to get out. They can wait some more there are other drivers out there..Its funny how they will get their stuff together when you all of the sudden put your foot down. Also say with customers who are gonna hurl in your car, if you tell them, at least with Lyft, idk about Uber, about that $250 fee they'll have to pay if they do in your car they all of the sudden gain this amazing restraint to hold it in..

Questions: New driver and I just bought a 40K 2017 8-seat Traverse AWD in Aspen and all I get is UberX requests, even if there are more than 4 people or if they have skis which is why we have an UberSki option. I recently picked up a family of 5 adults and 3 kids and they requested an UberX. Should I have added additional passengers on the app or cancelled and asked that they request an UberXL? Also... if I decide to only accept XL, how long before Uber shuts me down for cancelled requests? And... I had a rider request a ride from the base of Aspen Mountain where hundreds of people were standing. I texted and phoned to find out where they were and no reply. I cancelled and requested again with the same results. They requested 3 times and I had no way to contact them even though we had a strong 4G signal. Uber shut me down for 2 minutes during high surge and I lost a ride. Anything I can do? You can answer in a future vid if easier. Thanks for all you do buddy!

So if you ever get more than 4 on an UberX request you can let them know you can't do the ride (I would blame insurance or something like that as opposed to just saying NO) or you can also do the ride and then contact uber via the driver app and let them know it should have been an XL ride.
You can just ignore all X requests and there's no penalty: therideshareguy.com/how-to-take-advantage-of-ubers-new-acceptance-rate-policy/
So you couldn't call/text your pax? Usually I try to text if too many people and cell service sucks. maximumridesharingprofits.com/how-to-text-your-uber-or-lyft-passenger/

Once you have been doing this a while you find what sits best with you. I use the Rideshare timer & set it for 6 minutes. I also send a text on arrival on most occasions. If it's been a bad night with some idiots then I might not send a text. You do have to give them the benefit of doubt sometimes & just wait the 5 minutes. It seems the safer option as too many drivers cancelling as no shows might eventually force Uber to stop paying the cancellation fee. You need to look at the big picture not just your little corner of it.

I'm a brand new driver and learning on-the-fly ... what do you mean by "minimum hourly rates" and "time guarantees" ??? ... is that why I have gotten pop-up notices from uber about having driven e.g. 2 hours and 45 minutes then trying to go offline and getting a prompt saying "...are you sure you want to go offline you'll hit 3 hours in 15 minutes..." ... are they paying me some incredibly low hourly rate even when I don't have any rides ???

In some cities, they offer earnings boosts or hourly guarantees but the notices you are describing are just mind games Uber likes to play with its drivers :)

This is something that I would employ in certain situations, Rideshare Guy. I have gotten to a "spot" and at the very last minute, the rider cancels without even a call or text... or I get there, I speak with them either on phone or text and the next thing I know they are cancelling when I am already there or damn close by. So, YES, I would use this strategy unless, I was not absolutely sure of the pick-up location. Some of these "riders" tend to be very inconsiderate of the "driver's" time, so "training", YEAH, that is an accurate term for some of them.

I am a relatively new Uber driver. I'm like you, I typically implement the call/text the passenger strategy to get them out the door. It's very frustrating, but I felt like this was my only option. I appreciate you talking about this strategy. One thing I would be concerned about, that you may or may not have answered already, is when is the passenger able to rate you? Only at the end of the ride, when you accepted the ride? Because if you're canceling on them, wouldn't they be inclined to give you a 1-star rating? If they can't rate you, then I think I'll be implementing this strategy often. Thank you for your time.

I treat passengers the way I would want to be treated. When I arrive, they are sent a text message by the app telling them that I have arrived. After two and a half minutes (half the required waiting time) I send them a text myself telling them that I am outside waiting. When five minutes have passed and their butt is not in the seat, I cancel.
If I cancel because of a no show, I will always take the app offline for a few minutes. They don't get a second chance with me. And, I'm not going to give them an opportunity to give me a low rating because I canceled on them the first time.
If they have the nerve to be behind a security gate and they have not contacted me with information on how to get through the gate, I wait the five minutes and cancel - no text, no phone call, nothing. They should know better than to request a ride from behind a security gate and not give the driver the code or instructions. After that happens to them a few times, they will learn.

Do you mean you cancel without even going to the pick-up location? If so, that is not OK. A passenger who correctly gives you the proper location and is waiting for you to arrive is then charged if you unfairly cancel for no reason. I would definitely fight this with UBER if this happened to me and I'm sure it wouldn't look good on the driver. If you mean you cancel after waiting the obligatory 5 minutes at the pickup location - then OK; I understand.. but I've read complaints from quite a few passengers about fraudulent cancellations by UBER drivers who never showed up - and then the passengers got charged!

This is not a strategy. After 5 minutes I will call or text, if it goes to voicemail(it always does, cause only self centred people make you wait), I drop the ride, turn off that platform to ensure the same passenger doesn't ping me again get a ride and leave bad feedback, turn on the other platform, drive around the block and park. Sometimes I will just turn on the other platform after 5 minutes and if I get a ping from them, I will then cancel the original ping, take the $4 and then go strait to the next stop.....you gotta hustle to make money at rideshare, no deadhead, no downtime, no games with flaky passengers

I used this method quit often when I was catering to the college crowd. You would make more doing this than driving them to the local bars. Without dealing with obnoxious behavior bad ratings and getting your doors slammed like a 57 Buick. I no longer cater to that crowd though and my ratings went from 4.74 to 4.92. I figured this out when they all left for xmas break. And I did feel like I was doing the next uber driver a favor. I got a call to a bar early morning one time from a guy. I pulled up out front looking around I see a guy siting on the curb holding a phone and puking his brains out. It was him for sure. Waited 5 mins cancelled and moved on, no thanks hommie

A recent spin on this is when the Uber driver supposedly arrives for pick-up and then hides in a nearby parking lot. He sits there and does not contact customer. Customer assumes he's taking too long and cancels or the driver cancels. Pissed off customer calls for another Uber and lo and behold, the (same!) driver shows up out of nowhere, picks up irrate customer and charges him Surge pricing. Horrible!

you have no obligation to contact the passenger if Uber has notified you that the passenger has been notified. So, canceling after the five minutes for a no show is perfectly legit. That being said, the passengers are usually waiting for me and if they notify me they are running late, I'll wait for them to come out. I'm NOT waiting for sloppy drunks who aren't paying attention to their UBER app or need to be poured off their barstool.

I think it's fair. However apartment addresses almost never work out on GPS and that's not very fair to riders. Also I've had passengers show me their phone explaining that the app didn't tell them we arrived. And it truly didn't. So I'll text them, say I'm there if there's no sign of them. If they don't respond and the 5 minute mark comes up I'll cancel. If it's a shady pickup point, it's not fair to just be like "well this is where uber told me to be." If I know I'm in front of the right house and there's no sign of them I'll cancel figuring they requested the wrong address. Now if they call you when you arrive and explain they put in the wrong address, do not cancel until the 5 minutes passes. Or wait for them to cancel. It's not fair that I drove 10 minutes to a pickup and you just now noticed you have the wrong pickup address. I had one passenger wait until I cancelled but I never did. I waited it out to the 5 minutes. If they call right away before you start moving explaining the correct pickup, that's good practice, they're on top of things and I'll go there as long as it's not way out of the way. They can see me coming, I wish a lot of people would be standing outside ready to go. But 90% of the time that's not the case.

What I dont like is they take so long to get in the car and get situated that its pst the 5minute mark and the app automatically starts calling them from my phone for me !! Thats be ause I dont hit the pick up button until they are all ready to go and buckled in because youtbe videos I watched people said passangers can get mad i you do that before its time to start driving to the destination. I think we should still hit the pixk up button so they know we are serious about them not taking their sweet time. Like thi one lady who had unruly kids jimping all around in the car acting crazy I was about to speak up and say something to her kid when they finally listened and buckled up and sat still so I could start driving.

its a good move for uberpool. 2 min wait time and most these people jump in my car for $2 anyway ($1.50 after ubers 25%). cancel and get the $5 - $3.75 after fee without having to take them

To put it simply, like attracts like. If you're conscientious of doing a good job and having a good time doing it, the experience of your rider is going to be reciprocated, 9 times out of 10, if not more!!!!

I had a rider who was standing in on the sidewalk in front of where I pulled up. He was talking to his buddy. Glanced at me but never acknowledged that he was my rider. I waited over 5 minutes while he's still talking away. I cancelled and drove away and within 2 minutes he pinged me to come back. He got in the back seat and kinda gave me the cold shoulder but never said a word about the cancellation. If he had done so in a hostile way I would have ended the trip right at that moment. As it was he was going to the airport so I made $16 plus the $4 cancellation fee. Plus I got a little smug satisfaction LOL

I usually call and will try and connect with the rider. If they don't answer, I'll wait the five minutes and cancel.

what? you have a problem with working 8 hours doing pickups and waiting but only getting paid for 3 hours?

I start the clock when I arrive. If 5 minutes go by I am gone. The passenger can not rate you on a cancel. A lot of times they will move their pin and send you to the wrong location. If this is the case, I will find out how far they are going. A short distance..automatic cancel. A long distance..I will consider taking the ride if they are not too far away. Uber is very fair about the cancel if you are waiting 5 minutes. Uber is happy because they make a dollar and the customer is going to request another Uber.
Now during high surge/bar pickups, I contact the customer and tell them I am on the way and confirm where the pickup point is at. Making a quick pickup during high surge will enhance your income. Often I can catch 2 or 3 rides during a surge as long as I am not waiting for passengers.

Or uber's shitty software gives bad geolocation for the passenger and driver.
This customer and Uber hostile attitude...along with Uber's general crap..is why customers have left in droves over the last year.
The app and drivers are how consumers "see" Uber.
      Good job :)

Joseph Messineo one time this guy did put in the wrong address but he was drunk and I beleivef him that it was an honest mistake. He was from out of town and the fact the pin was at the hotel he stayed at mae sense. He was only right across the street at the gas station. He was so nice I wasnt even annoyed like I usually would have been. I ended up having a great conversation and got a cash tip from him in the end of the ride.
