Norfolk Southern Railroad NEW PSR? Will It Work?

- Alan Shaw the CEO of Norfolk southern railroad had some interesting things to say during their investor day last month. He mentioned fixing relationships with the employees of NS and that Operation ratio is not their primary focus.. He mentions customer relations and providing excellent service to NS customers which has not been done hardly at all after listening to the STB hearings in April of 2022. I want to hear your thoughts and your first impressions on this short section of this meeting.

PSR needs to go away. PSR is having a lot to do with these derailments on the main line lately. And yes we need to keep a two man crew, heck make it three men if necessary. Heck I had to walk a 3 mile long key train three nights ago. And there was no way a truck could have pulled up to help fix the problem. Shaw needs to come out and be with the real boots on the ground men and women and see what is actually happening and how things are operating. He needs to stop listening to train masters and terminal superintendents. He needs to come out to the mainline and yards and listen to the workers on the ground.
All it is ,is a garbage phrase for shareholders. Listen to this BS from the csx and its previous names. Cover name for bean counters collecting boneasses with ruined lives. " right way" was a cover slogan. Today you are captive shipper , screw you".
PSR Is hard on crews, it's a big turn off to people like me that want to spend more time with family and or have weekends off.
He's comes to the yards and talks the folks but the superintendent is always with him giving everyone the Stink eye atleast here
Trainmasters and supers are angling for bone asses they could care less for you or the customer. That is unless they are BIG customers, then they lie.

PSR - Poor Safety Regulations
Class 1s need an episode of Undercover Boss.
I have never worked for a RR, but I can tell that PSR is nothing more than lean manufacturing for the railroad. Anything that doesn’t “add value” is contracted out, such as switch work, fuel trucks, etc. Personally I think those things obviously add value. Lean manufacturing works well for the Japanese companies that invented it, but it isn’t working for the RRs…
After their recent activity in Ohio, I'd say it's not working...at all
A company with no customers is of no value to anybody!
$10bil in share holder returns. But they said in the PEB that if we got sick days or too much of a raise they would cut more employees. The railroad the last 3 yrs has been the most chaotic and unreliable job I've ever had. No idea what jobs they will cut or what we will be doing from month to month.
PSR has prevented me from wanting to even get a career into railroading.
I have my opinions of PSR but I will keep them to myself as I am retired mechanical. Almost ten years ago I was escorting a high value load that had started in New England to be delivered to Colorado. NS would take it to KC for interchange with BNSF. That's basically all I knew and would have to figure it out on the fly (like always). When we got to Conway the tower operator told me the load would be on a train to Elkhart. I know my maps and Elkhart in not on the way from Pittsburgh to KC and thinking out loud I queried "Why Elkhart?" "Well where would you send it?" Before I could say another word the tower super said "Elkhart is the mother yard. Everything goes to Elkhart." Ultimately my charge was placed on a train to Decatur.
This is just one point and one cannot trend one point. Still I have to wonder, how many loads went to the "mother yard" just to be back hauled to where they were going in the first place? I will not say PSR was the answer but something had to be done.
Good to hear that they’re gonna focus on poaching business from the trucking industry, especially medium-haul stuff. Sounds like they’re gonna need more boxcars.
I don't think rail can take any freight from trucks.
How about they start by doing a safe reliable job with the work they have?

@@csxns well the trucking industry took everything they’ve got from the railroads. Plus if they have to schedule the rest of their trains around tightly scheduled traffic they’re trying to take from trucking, that can help to discipline on time performance for the rest of the traffic. That is, if they’re serious about taking trucking traffic.
@@seankaiser2505companies hate doing business with the the railroad. They took tracks out how tf are you going to do that. Truck is way better i gross 140k. Fuck the railroad. You see what happened to Ohio. Railroad takes jobs and causes problems. Trucking don't go around stock holders.
Hopefully this is a step towards becoming more employee friendly.

I wonder how much of this flows down to the employee's? You know, the ones that actually do the movement of trains and freight? Just mindboggling that the Stockholders know whats going on and what the plan is but the Employee's never do and they wonder why the Union's never buy into what they want to do.

Amazing with all of the bean counters that they have employed no one has realize that the implementation of PSR has also meant a sharp rise in the amount of derailments and service interruptions. It seems like that would be the bottom line because if your service that you provide is not safe as it was they are not going to use it
Well this is pretty blood curdling considering what happened in East Palestine
I wish you could interview some of those customers who are on NS lines. UP has a lot of very dissatisfied customers from what I hear. He really likes to brag on his service. He should remember the old saying "Let others praise you". Could you find one NS customer that would be willing to go on your show and say the service is good?
I’m sure i could if I had a way to reach out to them but Id be willing to bet in their contract there is a non disparagement agreement somewhere.. there has to be or all of their customers would be screaming right now.
I hate the railroad I'm glad they took the track out in my town. No derailments no loud ass train. Fucking two mile trains. Cuts jobs all the time. I'm 1000 % for trucking. Coals been dead and my old job said it was like pulling teeth to get a hold of someone. I really see why they went to trucks
No more PSR. There has been derailments and retirements of good locomotives.

the key to the entire video is at the 4:36 mark... look at the 2021 operating ratio... 60.1%... that's HUGE... most railroads considered 80% operating ratio as normal... but SIXTY??!?!??... that's pretty damn good... and they did that by cutting/furloughing employees, closing yards, consolidating work etc... and if they want to continue to have such a low operating ratio, they will have to continue on the path of furloughs, yard closings, consolidating work etc... so i would NOT expect anything to change for the better... because if things did change for the better for the workers then that would mean a HIGHER operating ratio number... well shaw just bragged that the operating ratio went down 530 points which translated to a 110% return for the investors (or $10 BILLION bucks in the investors pockets)... shaw ain't letting the operating ratio number go UP if he can help it... he'll continue to drive it LOWER AND LOWER which spells continued bad news for the workers

that's why we love it when engines break down or a detector causes a train to stop. Love delays makes you feel good your making everyone in a Corporate Office squirm about having to pay a relief crew!

@@samuelsmith2317 yea i know exactly what you mean... our trainmaster where i worked, he was ALWAYS worried about the budget and the overtime hits to the budget... i remember getting 15 min of overtime on our north end day flat switcher (that job NEVER gets overtime)... wow we got the 3rd degree about our "switching efficiency", "what took so long"... blah blah blah... i was thinking to myself WTF it's 15 stinkin' minutes... but it was worth it to see that dude sweatin' over his fricking budget🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Taking into account the derailment in Ohio, this presentation by the CEO is proof that NS has no intention of making any changes or accepting blame. They are greedy and this guy leads the charge. They made their choice of profits over safety and well-being of the country.
at CN they just brought 60mph for track speed and are focusing on velocity. now sending trains out on time and crews are actually making it. im kinda liking this so far

@@michaelthomas5367 overall its not bad. im n ot a fan of somethings the company does but its comfortable. i work a wayfreight and take weekends off. in terms of time off its probably the best class one..

One Word Mr. Shaw need to end PSR that'll I got the say too many derailment every week or so, But I will wait and see what happen this new plan of work.

Yeah well basic leadership principles can’t be ignored. If you ignore your employees welfares and concerns and now because of that you have no employees to move the freight, because you driven them away with lack of ethical leadership….Then you fuck over your investors anyway….because now they’re making no money because nothing is moving. I’m not in the RR industry but I’m a first line supervisor. My mentality is if I take care of my people, they will take care of me when I need it. Olive branch approach. This is a symbiotic relationship. Yes, sometimes you have to put the foot down for unacceptable behavior but for the most part, if you invest in your people, and they know you’re investing and caring for them, they will invest in you too. It’s a team effort and as the supervisor you help guide it, but you need your people to believe in it as well. Best way to do that is to take care of them. If your employees are happy, they will take care of the customers, if the customers are happy, they will take care of the company, which in turn will help the investors. You can’t just focus on the investors. That’s a poor business model. There’s a difference between leadership and leadershit.

PSR sucks. NS customer service sucks. “Favorable resolution “ in the contract agreement! 😂 = Unions voted down the contract but we donated enough money to the criminals in the federal government so the government forced the union employees to accept the crappy deal or be fired.
Norfolk Southern still doesn’t have enough employees to do the day to day work correctly to meet FRA regulations. The company doesn’t care.
You can watch this guy spew this stuff but it is just fodder.
I'm not buying his pitch one bit and neither should the share holders

Oberman called them out on it back in April when he was talking about the massive furloughs in 2019-2020. I going watch the PSR guy that Alan was referring to tonight and have it posted tomorrow, I’m curious to what he/she has to say to wallstreet Vs what really happens in the next 6-12 months lol

I don't see any of the railroads Laying new tracks down to go get new business .All i see is track being removed Or lines being abandoned

Honest opinion he is a fool. Norfolk southern needs to return to the basics and understand the real reason why they are even a company and why they ask have jobs. It is because of the men and women who have sacrificed their time to transport the goods. That includes you bro. Simply put ns needs to go back to the days of wick Mooreman a real man of railroading. Way to judge a book by the cover. Many rail buffs have made competent railroaders and enjoyed long Careers. It's not my capability I question, only if the railroad is gonna need me after too much longer.

Lots of good people furloughed or quit and now they cannot retain any new people once they experience the work conditions (being gone, one call, working in elements). Reap what you sow.
