I work in the airlines but if that didn’t work out this would be my second career choice. Great career and hats off to all the conductors and engineers out there who do a heck of a lot more than we realize to help keep us safe.

I used to work for Metro-North Commuter Railroad as a Delay-Clerk in the Dispatchers office and then moved to Tower A in GCT as a Lever-man. Great company to work for and I'd like to go back either Dispatcher Trainee or Conductor. My co-worker still work there. Great people to work with. 🤓

@@opti2263 So you have to qualify on the territory. they test you where all the switches, interlockings and signals are. They usually break it up into sections. I believe you get two tries at it. If you don't pass the test the terminate you and there is nothing anyone can do because the goal of an AC is to become a conductor not stay an AC forever. Sometimes a train crew will have two certified conductor but the AC is the one that has the least amount of time certified in that territory of the least sonority. This happens a lot too, sometime a certified conductor is someone's AC on one train and they are the Conductor on the next train.

Have to disagree with the narrator's comment that to be a conductor you don't need to have any specific skill ( 3:35). You need to be able to, at least, read and comprehend what you are reading, speak clearly, be able to perform basic math computations, and write on a high school level. For freight service, IIRC, you should have enough physical strength to lift a coupler knuckle.

Compared to today not much. They no longer make the announcements when going to stop it's automated I simply ask somebody politely if I should be asleep cuz he wake me up I didn't want to miss my stop apparently that was too much for him. Good thing I woke up and he didn't have to do something that I wasn't making out to be submissive it was just asking for a kind gesture. I remember people commuting from Rye to Grand Central Terminal with wake me up at rye as a pin on their lapel and the conductor did just that. I remember conductor that used to do the weather every morning they no longer do that. Trust me while I appreciate it I'm giving them my money they should be thanking me not the other way around.

I’m very close to starting with Metro North as a coach cleaner. I applied for the job in May 2022. I wasn’t called to take a test until August, I took the test and passed it. I didn’t get an interview until January 2023, accepted the conditional offer, I had to notarize my signature. I took the drug test and physical ability test in February 2023. My training is expected to start in June 2023. I can’t wait to get started!!
