“Paying people to sit and do nothing”.
Ah yes, who else is gonna fill out the paperwork, keep it in order, make sure all the waybills are correct, watch the train by to ensure car placements and order are correct and match paperwork?
Who else is going to check tonnage vs engine groups, coordinate moves, spot customers, tie brakes, do stability tests, do brake tests, walk the train, and keep the hogger awake?
Engineer already has enough on their plate. Trust me.
On most of these bigger wide cab engines, you got 3 different screens to monitor (PTC and IFDs), have to monitor air, throttle modulation, and dynamic brakes where needed.
It could be argued that if you’re using Trip Optimizer or Energy Management that the train will “run itself”, but GETO and EM wont put air down. Hogger has to monitor the train even when not running manual.
If she starts to get too quick, ya gotta put air down. You only get a 3 mph buffer before you get enforced and it takes time for the air to set up.
On top of that, just like the conductor, engineers gotta know their turf and know it well, so situational awareness is key.
Knowing the speeds, grades, mileposts, and curves are important.
A lot of people just rely on PTC for their territory info. It can be a helpful tool, but you still need to have awareness and know your turf.
On my turf, we have a certain zone that has gotten dozens of people enforced because there are two speed reductions within a mile of each other coming Eastbound.
First one is a reduction to 50. Then right behind it is a reduction to 35 for a curve.
Guess what…. PTC only shows the next target speed. So it says that the next reduction is 50. However, right after you pass it, you see “Next Target: 35 in 0.2 mi”.
Mind you, this is on a downward grade.
So unless you’re Jesus or only have a hold of 10 empties, you ain’t losing 15 mph in a quarter mile on that grade.
    No way Jose.
You can definitely tell who has been out here and who hasn’t.
Those who have no idea are the first to open their mouths even though they wouldn’t know their toes from their fingers out here.
    This is a demanding industry.
Putting anymore load on the hoggers will lead to a sharp spike in incidents and injuries.
    I promise you.
Everybody thinks the hogger had the easiest job.
On a good day, he does, but there is A LOT of responsibility.
These people running their mouths can’t handle a $20,000 3,000 lb car, yet they want to talk about how someone handles a multi-million dollar 30,000,000 lb train.
    It’s both pathetic and comical.

One day UP 844 came to Houston. At the Amtrak Sta, UP brought up thier portable loco simulator truck. I got in the right seat. They port me on the Portland Sub in Oregon. One 10 car train with a SD70MAC for power. In Operation Lifesaver, they teach a train takes a mile to stop. Well, the sim taught me it takes a while for a train to speed up and stop. When they told me to stop train, I started to put the brakes on. Well I knda panicked. This puppy was not slowing down very fast.....
Got to respect the head end crew a lot better after that
And thinking of the simulation, one person crews make no sense. For complete situational awareness, you need two people.

Heck, I worked for the RR in the mid 90's and crew size was an issue then. I'm also a stockholder, albeit a small one, but to think one-man crews are smart is just plain STUPID. Wouldn't it be nice to take those people who think like that and make them work the board for about a week or two. I bet most of them wouldn't last three days. That kind of dumb talk just makes me irate; I applaud you for being able to keep so calm.

One man crew is just asking for it.I gonna be up front with you and every here.I am not a railroad worker.Although I wanted to be one.Until I started talking to the crews. In my neck of the woods it's CSX.Then is most of your knowledge rail workers are now retiring. And the fact the railroad has cut a lot of jobs.In fact to many jobs. They have shut down railyards cut back of their maintenance departments. And the rail yards shut down only to turn around and Opps.Maybe we should have left that opened.I am against 1man crew.Thats way to much to put on 1 man.Being that you now have trains over 2 miles long.No 2 or 3man crews are o.k.

I absolutely agree with 2 person crews! First off, an engineer should remain in his seat the WHOLE time to prevent some idiot from jumping in the engine and taking off with it. In addition, the conductor is responsible for (Taking to dispatch, calling signals, verifying defects on the DD, working industries on foot, counting cars back so the engineer doesn't crash into the industry, etc.)
This goes to show that we need 2 person crews, whoever commented on your video saying that the conductor does nothing, needs to fix themselves immediately and realize that the conductor is vital and they aren't always "High School Drop-out" I know a bunch of train crews who went on to get Associates, Bachelors, etc.

I haven’t started class for the railroad yet but I love this channel. People say oh this a dangerous job well I almost died twice at FCA due to negligence. Seen dangerous warehouse accidents like 30 foot racks falling in front of me and having to run. FCA had some of the most corrupt people I’ve seen to date. All the while putting money in their pockets and making the environment less safe when COVID hit. They had people doing two jobs because people with seniority were on leave for 6 months. These companies can be down right nuts not thinking about the safety of employees and others around.

    • @rc391995

I had similar situations befall me before I retired from the RR I found myself being chased by an airborne coal hopper flopping end over end towards me . talk about running for ones life . I also witnessed during the same accident the rail arise up in the air like a giant king cobra snake and then strike at my feet . This was only parts of the things I observed during my very first tour of duty for the RR. This was the results of a 48 mph head on collision with the yard engine that night . I can go on and on with this about 38 years worth where I faced death . The best I can offer you if your not a track star and fast on your feet you best prepare to be. Running like a bat out of hell would serve you well if you are working the ground in train and engine service. The training they are giving all is inadequate especially for the engineers that have not a clue how to handle 2 mile of train and bring it back to a coupling over the worst of terrain . every time before you make a move you look the situation over you are faced with and you plan yourself two escape routes before you call your engineer back to a coupling because somewhere in you carrier your engineer is going to have you running for your life and sometimes the escape route gets very slim I doubt you've had 40 ton pieces of metal chasing you around much you'll see what real danger is if you have a long carrier with the RR you'll likely see people maimed for life or crushed to death with their training program as it is now. Personally I felt safer when the drunks ran the place as opposed to all the college kids they have running the place now.

We are still suffering the aftermath of PSR! During that S-t show they got rid of so many Carman they had a guy out doing air test in the departure yard who had only been in the rip track shop for 25years!! Very nice guy but…Coming into receiving yard there was always a guy changing brake shoes and the center of the receiving tracks showed that old brake shoes everywhere. When they we’re changing brake shoes inspecting draw bars they could get a much closer look at the car, but that was not fast enough or cost effective for greedy shareholders. So guess what everything goes to Sh-t and communities get destroyed!
The shareholders put the unsuspecting public at huge risk while we pass through there backyards…literally!

  • @25mfd
    @25mfd 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

crew size has been an issue since literally forever... there were always a lot of crewmembers on trains because of the lack of automation... before automation, humans had to physically apply brakes to stop the trains (Westinghouse automatic air brake replaced that particular brakeman duty)... they had to go flag under old RULE 99 (ABS signals replaced the head and rear end flagmen)... they needed the extra brakemen and the fireman to pass car count signals (the radio helped get rid of the extra brakemen and the last of the firemen)... the transition from steam to diesel was the *FIRST* nail in the firemans coffin... the rear brakeman lost his job to the automated F.R.E.D, (the caboose was also lost)... even today they have automatic uncouplers on engines that are used during pusher operations, a duty that *WAS* performed by the condr... so yea the RR have always been looking to cut workers any chance they can

instead of cutting crews railroads need to increase the number of trackside detectors
mandate every power unit have track inspection tech built into the unit (will prevent what happened in MT with amtrak)
and also increase the training on how to not mishandle these 2 mile long car strings
id say if they refuse to incorporate better change the FRA puts in take away the ability to haul any tank cars any center beams
and any train over 4500 feet
sadly this wont happen cause the people who run the FRA are invested into the railroads stock themselfs

Track authoritys, speed restrictions, industry work, wrapping handbrakes, mtr work which most engineers i work with just dont even bring in anymore not to mention emergency situations. We struck a tree a few weeks back on a downhill and it snagged under the engine. So instead of wiping out the detector a mile down the track we stopped, changed up the track authority and then got off the tree so we could remove it. Im glad they made a ruling because how is an engineer supposed to deal with something like that by himself?

Can someone please explain to me how a one man crew is supposed to work? Does the engineer have to play the role of both the conductor and the engineer, filling out papers while at the same time driving the train? And not to mention the possibility of falling asleep on board without someone else to keep him awake. Its funny, cuz who can argue with someone like you who actually worked on these trains? I've heard multiple railroad employees talk about this and they all hate it. Of course most of the higher ups probably spent their whole life in an office, not once did they actually have to sit in one of these trains for 12 hours, that's who's telling you that a 100 car 30,000 ton train should be operated by one person who plays the roles of the conductor, engineer, and brakeman all at the same time

I know that was a rhetorical question lol but we have herd the carrier argument and it’s not very good lol. The engineer would basically be there to override trip optimizer and PTC if something was to go wrong. Which I’ll be honest Trip optimizer isn’t optimized at all.. and ptc has some serious bugs still with communication. The engineers would basically sit at watch a screen for track authorities and accept them be there to tone up MOC if something with the engine went wrong.
The problem is with collisions, derailments, health emergencies, and having 2 people on the head end to help with inspections and watching for problems on the tracks like trees, broken rails, switches, crossings etc.
I’m sure you have thought about all of this. This is just a reply to anyone who reads your comment and is genuinely curious as to why a one man crew will not work.

Check out the UP reaction video I posted about the ground based conductor idea they have.. unfortunately it’s already being done by short line railroads.

200 degrees above local temp? 212 is boiling point of water,? That seems too high of a setting before the detector goes off.
And I think the train involved was too ANATHEMA long.

      @Railroad_Talk  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

These temps have been changed and the train was 120ish cars and 19,000ish tons.. if I remember correctly lol.
