FRA Supports 2 Man Crews?? Good News

  • The fight for 2 man crews has been going on well before I ever started as a freight conductor. With the huge derailment last year in Ohio we knew right then this showed the importance of having a conductor on the head end. The Engineer, Conductor and Conductor trainee saved lives that day thanks to their team work, Training, and preparedness.

Youre not wrong, ptc is buttcheeks and dont get me started on trip optimizer/ems. Sad part is railroads are always looking to cut cost instead of making everything better. Im still tryna figure out how back in the day railroads were able to still be profitable, pay employees great, keep employees employed, and maintain railroad equipment including locomotives, cars and track but nowadays they cant do none of that correctly. Shareholders are the worst thing to happen to railroads by far, they cut all these cost to maximize profits when its simple you invest a dollar to gain 10 but they rather save that penny and end up losing 10 dollars instead when all the non maintained equipment from saving that penny takes a shit and they dont have anybody to fix it because they done furloughed the people that fix it.

That's some damn real talk. Being publicly traded has made profits and money ALL that matters. Cut absolutely everything, risk equipment and lives if it saves money nothing else matters NOTHING. If the railroads could fire every employee and hire foreign contract workers at minimum wage with no benefits and pension they would have done it already. Especially when the sociopathic ceo hunter harrison made the rounds and gutted them to the bone marrow. They also are beyond ridiculous with the abortion that is PRS. They will take a spreadsheet of costs and look at one single column for the month and cut it beyond bare minimum while blowing out costs elsewhere vastly more than saved in the one column and switch and repeat. It's an absolute joke. They make money in spite of themselves. 2 man crews should be mandatory just for the safety factor of 2 people checking everything let alone how often its necessary for the conductor to be there. With all the managers they'd have to hire to drive around to assist conductorless trains, plus massive delays to trains associated with it I have no doubt it would end up more expensive than just keeping conductors to begin with.

    "Unmanned Trains".
Can AI operate hand throw switches, walk the train, identify hot axles, identify and release partially applied handbrakes, identify flat spots, replace leaking hose gaskets, flag crossings, tie and untie air hoses, tie hand brakes, hang a marker, turn in air, cut out cars, operate cut levers, equip a run-around hose, copy radio waybills, change a broken knuckle, do stability tests, identify and stop short of temporary conditional stop signs (Form Y), and identify and differentiate between wildlife collisions and trespasser or vehicle collisions?
If I were a RWIC on a Form Y or even an employee of a customer served by a local or road train, the absolute last thing I would want is a completely unmanned multi-million lb steel giant with enough power to effortlessly pull a solid concrete building off it's foundation working autonomously around me / within my limits.
Pardon my French, but fuck every single part of that.
Being on these things every day, you really do get an idea of just how much energy they have as well as how dangerous they can be.
We really need to shy away from this new trend of entrusting everything to AI technology.
    It will never end well.
Moral of the story is keep humans in the loop and at least 2 people in the cab, no matter what.

The FAA needs to see this. There’s been some talk in recent years about replacing the second pilot with more automation. While cool it raises a ton of safety concerns amongst pilots. Because there is two of us up there for a reason and that reason being, we have proved time and time again that one pilot isn’t enough. So why do you want a situation where if one pilot messes up it sends hundreds of passengers hurtling towards the ground. If a train can’t operate with optimal safety and efficiency with one person why should a plane.

BLET on the CPKC side is currently voting to see if we ratify a new contract that would make us go hourly, cut our work rules out, and take around $35,000 out of the pockets of the guys working the pool blocks. The Canadian side of CPKC is about to strike on the 22nd and we might actually follow suit if they keep up their bullshit on the US side. They furloughed dozens of guys the other day and production is slowing down while everybody is being overworked. I absolutely HATE working for CPKC. Ever since CP took over us at KCS, the 3 guys at the top of the company have shown that they don't actually give a shit about us. All they care about is the almighty dollar. They send the worst locomotives down here from Canada for us to use. There's no working air-conditioners in some of the road motors and in the south it routinely gets up to 100 degrees. They keep trying to push this stupid contract on us. They are forcing jobs to stop working at 8 hours so they don't get over time and making the jobs behind them finish that job plus do their work. They made it where you can only lay off sick 12 days a year or you'll go to investigation. They're also too stupid to realize that WE are the ones that turn the wheels which earns the profits. The guys on the Legacy KCS side are PISSED right now. CP is one of the worst companies on this planet and I wouldn't recommend anyone EVER work for them.

Two man crews help in alot of situations be it derailment, grade crossing incident, blown hose, dragging equipment etc etc. Like i can think of so so many situations ive been in where i think about how would my engineer handle this by himself? On the side of a literal mountain miles from the nearest road how exactly is he gonna fix this himself? He cant. Theres literally no reason why this should even be up for debate. Everyone on the ground sees it but most the people up high just see numbers

Problem with giving short lines an exception is most short lines are partially or wholly owned by a larger class one carrier. So the idea that they do not have the capital to afford two man crews is frankly bs. Giving them an exception will most likely result in many of the carriers leasing or selling their trackage rights to short lines that they already own. They do this already to avoid paying for track maintenance. Class three carriers can get up to 90% reimbursement from the federal government for track maintenance and upgrades.
End of the day this is all a game to the class I’s of finding the most exploitive loophole they can and taking full advantage of it.

I got a serious question, since I’m planning to go into CP. Should I try to take a railroad engineering college course? Because being from Wisconsin there’s a shit ton of technical colleges and opportunities, or should I just jump right into the job? I feel like if I take the course I’d have better luck going to a different company that may require it if I dislike CP. However I’ve talked to a lot of old heads and new guys and most of them don’t have many complaints about the job. If you get to this I appreciate it, and any feedback you have. Love the videos, and keep it up!

i’m a high school student that’s interested in becoming some kind of railroad worker. i have the option of going to trade school for diesel equipment technology, and i am wondering if that would be something that would help me get a job or if it doesn’t matter? i know its not needed but could it help? it would be 22 months and tuition would be completely covered by the state so theres really nothing bad about it but if it isn’t necessary is it worth it?

I will be leaving the company to move out of state and work for the union pacific in cheyenne wyoming. From what I heard I will be going from a big rail yard to a small one, should I be worried about being furloughed or not making as much money as I do now?? I'm moving due to family reasons
Also where can I read about union Pacific's union agreement and if they currently start their employees at 100 percent as far as pay.
