Will This Strategy Work? - Norfolk Southern Railroad

  • We have herd about Norfolk Southerns new strategy. It seems like this new strategy is getting further away from the PSR (Precision scheduled railroading) mindset. Based on this video they seem to be focused on customer service but most importantly their culture. We all know the culture at these class 1 railroads are horrible. Will Norfolk Southern set the bar for other railroads to fix their culture? Let me know down below.

    Notice all the bright orange vests and hats with no dirt or grease? That's because they did this at the training center in Georgia. All of those guys are new trainees with little to no experience on the railroad. They have no context about how the railroad has operated up until this point. And Alan Shaw's up there lecturing them about how it's going to get so much better. A good chunk of those guys probably won't even make it out to the railroad.

    The business "idea" they are following is basically a railroad version of toyotas business plan. They have been sending out tons of surveys lately and to be honest, they have been responding. Not individually but as a whole. People answered and said people need more training, so they started sending CTs back to mcdonough and lengthening training if they needed it... sometimes lol but they have been responding to these surveys. They are only so good if people speak up on issues, and I understand if people don't.
    It's a toyota business model though. "Open to all ideas even from the ground floor" and it has worked well for toyota. Maybe it'll stick, who knows but Shaw is making NS be very different than the other railroads... we'll see what happens

    Back in the late 1980s my employer, the Chicago & North Western Railway, had a company improvement program they called TQIS (Total Quality Improvement System). Many employees called it, "Tortured Quietly into Submission."

    This video is really 35min long haha. We had this video for our work meeting and one thing that they said in our video that they don't show show on here is that they say they are going to keep their promise and not layoff and furlough any employees. I'm not sure I 100% believe that but only time will tell.

    We use to use the railroad for shipments at our factory we stopped because csx takes tracks out everywhere. Mainly the one in mt sterling ky. The railroad will destroy its self. trucking is more expensive but worth it. The railroad sucks. The don’t wanna ever railroad.

    PSR: productivity subverting responsibility. Nothing will change. 3 derailments in the last week and half on the yard. No department is proactive in finding and fixing an issue until cars on the ground. It’s probably ten times worse since you were there.

    As a long time employee of NS, believe me when I tell you, all they want to do from the day they hire you, is fire you. They want the trainmasters to be cops, not supervisors. The most important metric they have for promotion is how many people they have hearings on. I have been conductor, engineer, dispatcher and road foreman of engines. This is old culture that they will not shake off. How much money do they spend on training new employees instead of helping them improve. Example, to my best estimate NS has 325,000 dollars in all my training. Good employee clean record. I seen MANY people like me do something nominal and get a start serious. The agreement says if it is nominal then it is a talking to, not paper. Does the union get involved? Nope, as long as they are getting dues they could care less. They are useless. The culture needs to change to one of support, not ending a good employees career over stupid shit. It is so bad here that 20 year employees are quitting because they working conditions are bad enough but throw in head hunters and discipline for no little to no reason, people are over it. Hell, they have so many new hires make a trip, see the way things are and say no thanks and quit. Last I heard over 90% of new hires were quitting. Unheard of previously. Until NS figures out that they need to focus on helping employees improve and focusing on the ones that need to go, they will be under staffed and hated for the way they treat employees. They are not called Nazi Southern for no reason.

      @Railroad_Talk  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah that’s insane.. that’s a pretty clear sign you need more man power. The STB told them, FRA their employees.. he just opened the door he said “challenge me” and challenge the “leaders” out in the field.. those terminal superintendents better tighten that ass up and hire some people lol

I should probably keep up more with those type of videos from NS to understand that side of it better, and I hope they continue the progress and avoid as many mistakes as possible. Shaw also deserves a fair shot considering he hasn’t been the CEO too long yet, and I know he has the experience to lead the company. I have faith in the guy.

      @@workingcountry1776 Norfolk southern was the first company to have something bad happen. Unfortunately for them they had began the process of hiring back all the people squire (previous ceo) furloughed and that happened. That isn’t me saying they shouldn’t be held accountable because every member of that board knew this was happening and all of your terminal superintendents and train masters knew it was happening.
      It happens across every single major class 1 railroad and until they’re held accountable, more tragic accidents will continue to happen. The first line of defense is our carman and the last leg is the engineer and conductor and the class 1 railroads are already trying to fight back against the mandatory 2 man crews on trains. When it was actually the engineer and conductor and conductor trainee on that train in OH that saved hundreds and potentially thousands of lives with their quick actions.
