  • Republicans respond to vaccine funding and $1,400 check with Dr. Seuss and Mr. Potato Head, Donald Trump fights with the Republican Party over the use of his name, and Democrats worry about what their 2020 performance among some Black and Latino voters might mean for the 2022 midterms. Jon Favreau and Dan Pfeiffer discuss Joe Biden signing the American Rescue Plan and the GOP focus on the culture war. Then, they break down the internal Republican battle with the former president, and preview the 2022 midterm elections.

Crooked believes that we need a better conversation about politics, culture, and the world around us-one that doesn’t just focus on what’s broken, but what we can do to fix it. At a time when it’s increasingly easy to feel cynical or hopeless, former Obama staffers Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor have created a place where people can have sane conversations that inform, entertain, and inspire action. In 2017 they started Crooked with Pod Save America-a no-bullshit conversation about politics. Since then, we continue to add shows, voices, and opportunities for activism, because it’s up to all of us to do our part to build a better world. That’s it. End of mission.

I grew up with "If I Ran the Zoo," and I loved it. Then. I loved it then, when I was five or six, and the world was different. But I've changed and gotten wiser, and so has the world. It's important to do that. It's important for people my age - like Andrew Cuomo, a year younger than me - to think before they behave the way men unquestioningly did years ago. Yeah, you got away with it then, or your dad did, or your frat brother, but not now. That behavior was wrong, and maybe you didn't know then, but there's no excuse for not knowing now. White actors wore blackface in the movies, and that was wrong, and maybe they didn't know then, but they do now. No excuses. Things change. If you're lucky, you might not die before they do, so you have to adapt to the new. More importantly than just adapting, though, is *thinking* and *learning* why those old things are not okay any more. Instead of being nostalgic for them (MAGA mentality, literally) welcome the new culture. Welcome equality, and multiculturalism, and new ways of living and rejoicing and respecting one another. What good does clinging to racism and sexism do? Dump that and move on.

I just want to give my theory as a 2nd gen Asian immigrant. Living in Texas, you'll notice the majority of immigrants work for republicans and those white bosses will relay their political beliefs onto their workers. These large businesses owners are more likely to tell their workers, "if the GOP stays in power I'll have enough money to keep you guys employed." As an immigrant, even with citizenship; you'll always feel like a foreigner to the country and Republicans exploit those insecurities. We should find a way as democrats to find a good working environment for these immigrants (like unions) to find a way to win them back. I'm sure a lot of Republican Latinos truly believe that white collar silicon valley tech jobs aren't something they will ever have access to which causes disconnect and resentment.

It is. But its also very dangerous. Trump got a lot of support based on things, he had NOTHING to do with, from taking credit over 150 times for Obama's 2014 Veteran's Choice Act to taking credit for a good economy, that he inherited and then did everything, some1 wanting to destroy said economy would do, simply coz hes a fucking moron with ZERO sense of economy or listening to experts, the worst Ive ever seen in my 25 years as an accountant, and he was only saved from the inevitable destruction by completely overblown tax cut and stimulus, that u should never EVER do in good times, coz u will need those options in bad times, AND by the coronavirus hitting just as the underlying economic metrics were turning so bad, that it was a question of time, b4 the overall economic numbers would follow, and he could blame it all on coronavirus, when most of, what u Americans have gone through, are due to his and the GOP's horrendous economic policies for 4 years on top of decades of destruction of government and the economic system in general.
Point of that long text: Trump and the GOP took credit for a lot, and ppl believed them. It is imperative, that Biden and the Dems get proper pr to the ppl this time, so ppl know, who actually did these things, who actually helped them, instead of as usual GOP blaming Dems for all the bad things, the GOP caused, and taking credit for all the good things, the Dems did.
Its comical to watch them do it, coz we know better, but they do it, coz it works. Dems can NOT let them get away with it again, coz that will give power back to the GOP, and the next time they might be able to finish rigging the system enough, that ur last chance of getting out of their minority rule/tyranny is gone for good.

I don’t think they’ve been duped at all; in fact, they’re the ones who duped Chamber of Commerce Republicans into believing that things like cutting taxes for the wealthy were actually popular with the base. It’s not as if they used to be totally fine with immigrants, people of color, etc., and then got fooled into turning against them.
I don’t buy the whole “people voting against their interests” thing. People don’t vote against their own interests; but they might vote against what other people _think_ their interests are, which is not the same thing. For the perpetual grievance crowd, what good is a policy that promises to put more money in your pocket or lower your healthcare costs or whatever, if it’s also going to do the same thing for those you need to believe are less American, less deserving, and/or generally inferior to you? It’s the old “at least I ain’t no [n-word]” thing that’s been around as long as the republic. Obviously that’s not true across the board, but it’s true for a lot more voters than people either realize or want to admit.

Venezuelan-American here (from NY). Sadly, the anti-Maduro message from Trump reached out hard in Florida, and the campaign that painted Biden as a socialist was effective. Even though Venezuelans are progressive in nature (strong Union sentiment, free College, etc.), the Chavismo and Madurismo made many Venezuelans shift hardly to the right

    • @dfuher968
      @dfuher968 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Speaking from Europe here - over here it seems extra sad, coz Biden is anything but a socialist, Hell, here in Denmark we are often painted as socialists, but we are not and never have been, in fact every1 from Forbes to the OECD rank us as more capitalist, more business friendly, greater economic freedom etc than the US. But its very dangerous with these kind of smear campaigns, that are actually outright lies. They are very pernicious and hard to counteract, and it is very important to go against them right here and right now and not wait for the next election, to get out in front of the lies.
Also, while we ofc do not have the same knowledge about Venezuela, that u do, we dont see Maduro or Chavez b4 him as socialists. They might call themselves socialists, but to us theyre fascist. Fascists can be both right and left, its simply a question of, which ideology they hide behind to get into power, where they then revert to their true colors. To us, Maduro is a fascist dictator, illegally in power after a coup with the aid of the military in contradiction of the Venezuelan Constitution. And comparing him and Biden is utter ridiculous, tho I do understand, that it is an easy way to frighten ppl, who suffered under these fascists.
The saddest part of all is, that its actually Trump, who is the fascist, if he had gotten another 4 years, even a bumbling, incompetent moron like him couldve finished off the American democracy and done his own Maduro, and a lot of ppl were lied to and scaremongered into voting for, what they wanted to avoid at any cost.

Stacey Abrams needs to publish a ten-point program called “How I Did It” a la ‘Young Frankenstein’ on how Dem activists can take back our states and combat Republican gerrymandering.

    • @Muzakman37
      @Muzakman37 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Abrams needs to run a whole well-funded operation to flip/sign-up potential voters all across the South, where the largest black populations are as a proportion of the whole state pop. N Carolina, for example, is tantalisingly close for Dems but still...just...not...quite...there, yet 22% of it's pop is black, that's a lot of voters (and a growing Latino pop too). Even Florida's black pop is 17%, Trump won it by less than 3.5%. Despite gerrymandering, that's still a win margin that can either be reduced or even wiped out with a targeted, long-term campaign such as Abrams has been running in GA.
I think Rustbelt states will get older & more white, like Ohio is doing, as they're not where the economy has been fizzing for the past 20+ years, and we've already been seeing another Black Migration but this time to the South, to economic growth hotspots like Charlotte, TX, Nashville, Atlanta. Places like Detroit, despite being hollowed-out and becoming a majority black city, has lost over 11% of it's entire black population in the past 10 years, and chances are they've been heading south, cos that's where it's at economically, that's where it's been growing most. This only makes big black populations in Southern states even bigger, therefore even more electorally significant. I'm certain GOP strategists understand this (I can see it and I'm not a GOP strategist) and I think this has also helped to inform this wave of even-more outrageous voter suppression legislation being rammed through in southern states in particular.
Abrams knows her turf extremely well, so perhaps she can hand-pick a team of people who each deeply understand their states in the south and use the knowledge & successful tactics she gained in GA to help them run similar operations in those different states, starting like yesterday. The GOP are wasting zero time trying to undo universal suffrage in the south (and elsewhere) so the Dems must not waste a minute in countering that, or the GOP will completely rig the game for a generation.
2016 & 2020 showed Rustbelt states like WI, MI & PA are achingly close these days, they literally decide Presidents. I have a feeling what we're seeing in OH is already starting to happen in those 3 too, plus upstate NY could well follow that pattern as well (economically left behind, population loss, crap winters) although obviously that's countered by NYC.
Clearly a state like Alabama, or Louisiana isn't gonna turn, the margins are way too big (plus they're not really where the economic growth hotspots are), but Tennessee? Texas? Florida? N Carolina? They're definitely in the game, big populations therefore plenty of electoral college votes too, and huge electoral prizes, as Georgia is.

It kind of blows my mind that white-produced media has to remind itself, again, again, and again that Latinos are diverse. How many other people who speak a common language have the same beliefs and interests? Why is it so difficult to see diversity in groups that are not one's own? Could someone put together a research paper on how Spanish-speaking peoples are diverse so that the media can get up to speed on this?

There were a number of Latino organizers who warned Democrats about the lack of messaging to Latinos. For example, in FL Democrats were successful in blocking ads in English, but ignored Spanish ads saying Democrats were Socialists and that they'd make the country like Venezuela. There needs to be more continuing outreach to all Latino voters focusing on the things that matter to the individual communities.

_And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street_ was Seuss's first book and it's not among his lesser-known books, although the drawing in question has been criticized for decades now. The version of the book that I had as a child called this character a "Chinaman," which was later changed to "Chinese man." Republican nostalgia for 1930s racial stereotypes seems regressive even for them.

Immigration is only important to a pocket and not the whole jeans of the Latino community. I’ve lived in New York Miami San Antonio and currently LA and the economy seems to be the top issue. Only a few put immigration above that and they have a bias that is a bit blinding to what these communities need, loans for small businesses, easy access to the growing Marijuana market, and other financial benefit programs. Once that is established immigration tends to become more important because most Latino communities still remember our immigrant and colonial roots.

I lived in Mission :Texas during 7th and 8th grade My opinion about the Latino vote ; stems from my experience within the Latino community during my brief stay in Texas. First; there is a huge difference between the Latinos with means verses the Latinos without economic security. The Latinos generally 2nd or 3rd generation citizens tend to be better educated and more conservative than Latinos who are first generation citizens and very often have a language barrier and very likely work in the service industry. There are many bias even among upper class Mexican or Latino citizens. First generation Texas Latinos like California Latinos try to assimilate to the US society by speaking only English and requiring their children to concentrate on reading and writing English well however have the huge disadvantage of not being able to help their children in their educational pursuits. Within the more educated Latino communities there is a huge necessity to try to keep up with the Jones’s on a much smaller scale, for example throwing a ( fifteen year old party for a daughter is very important ). I say this because I saw how the students treated each other. I remember the terrible bullying towards the less affluent Latinos and how they were marginalized by other Latinos. I was concerned cool because I came from Washington. I still communicate with childhood friends from Texas who are stanch Republicans. So depending on what generation and economic status a latino or Mexican family is , determines how conservative that household is. Another important factor is that many Latino citizens in Texas don’t want to be associated or compared with the undocumented Latino crossing the US border. Many also feel more Mexicans crossing the border may cause a shortage of jobs.

I think it is important for Republicans to go all out on the Dr Seuss controversy. Let's have senators and representatives narrating the discontinued books as viusals of each page are projected on a huge screen in each of their respective chambers. Then they can read Little Black Sambo for an encore.
However, as a member of the Devil's Advocates Association, the conservatives do have a point as many books are being altered by their publishers because they contain imagery of colonialism or racial stereotypes that were part of the era when they were written. I believe these books should not be "sanitized" but new editions can be anotated for modern young readers just as could be for statues of former slave owners can have plaques noting why they are famous and mentioning that they also owned slaves. We need to own the past not hide it in the attic. That doesn't mean we celebrate the aspects we find undesirable in our current context, which is essentially what Republicans are doing and they need to be called out on it.

I am normally against banning books because they contain problematic content. I think the better way would be to add a forward explaining the historical context and why it is now problematic. However, when we are talking about children books for preteens, I don't think it is that easy as children might not be able to understand why the content is problematic and exposing children to such things from a young age normalizes it.

As a Nicaraguan-American I believe that a big reason why so many Latinos switched or voted Republican was for one simple reason. The Republicans led those Latinos to believe that they care about the community at large. Democrats have taken the Latin American vote for granted for way too long. I was able to convince a couple of friends of mine who were registered Republicans in Miami to vote for President Biden. They changed party affiliation after January 6th. Another reason is because we believe we are being used and lied to when Democrats finally choose to pay attention to us. Now, one important factor comes down to Spanish. The Democrats had countless grammatical errors on posters, their website, tweets, emails, text messages...etc. The way I see it is that if you’re not willing to print or put out a message in English with grammatical errors then why would you do it in Spanish. I personally find it disrespectful. The Republicans on the other hand had maybe a couple if that. The Republicans are willing to spend the money in targeting a group or issue whereas Democrats are not. That was obvious when the Democratic primaries started; it seemed to me and some friends that we were an afterthought to most of the candidates and to the DNC as a whole.
Side note: the only two campaigns who did a great job targeting Hispanics were Bernie Sanders and Pete Buttigieg. I’m no Bernie fan but I respect the man and damn it, his team did a great job. Possibly the best job ever. Just my two cents worth

I was born in 1968. My mother. Along with Arabian Nights, The Jungle Book, Dr. Seuss of course, & The Little Match Girl, ( which I never knew the actual ending of ) Till I was old enough to read it for myself. Also read me The Tales of Uncle Remus. An incredibly problematic book. In the continually changing lens of time, perspective, & awareness. Context matters. in 73, 74, & 75, When she was reading these stories. We were also discussing them in the context of the reality / belief systems, at the time of their creation. As well as what we have learned / know. To be right, true & just. Since then. The concept. Our understanding is ever changing. As are we. That is completely missing today Yes. Racists just want to be able to say racist things. On the other hand. Gotcha wokeness. Shuts down discussion & critical thought. Which then can lead. To understanding. I know it was the family that elected not to print more copies of these stories. That is not my point. The quality of our thoughts, & ideas. Can only be as good. As the quality of our language. George Carlen. We no longer have the vocabulary. The attention span, or the time. To even process. Let alone think critically about the information / disinformation coming at us 24 / 7. I am a disabled women / wheelchair user from birth. For me. Disability is a defining characteristic. Much like my brown hair, & blue eyes. Along with a sarcastic wit, & innate talent / ability to sing. Neither positive, or negative. It simply is. A point of oppression certainly, but also a bedrock of identity. I would never seek to change. It shapes my worldview. I love my life. All of these factors make me who I am. I like who that is. I am not broken / in need of cure. Suffering, trapped, sad, or waiting to walk. As the fear driven bias of the unknown. Expressed in our language. Suggests. ( suffers from, wheelchair bound ) The experience of disability. Is as varied. As people. Themselves are. That said. People are so worried about what they shouldn't say / how they shouldn't say / ask it. They say, ask, learn, & are curious about. Nothing. For fear of being judged / burned. Meanwhile. The unemployment rate for PWDs is still 70%. The ADA is gutted, & my rights / access are, is, still viewed. As a magnanimous gesture. A favor. For which. I should be grateful. Instead of a law to be followed. This is happening on a societal scale. Intent / context matters. I don't care what words are used. If the intent is genuine. I fear we have lost the tools necessary. To tackle, & solve the issues facing us. If we cannot discuss them bluntly. Understanding the difference between gratuity in service of manipulation, & necessity. Finally. As well intentioned as it may be. I personally would not. Presume to speak to, or for. Let alone judge. Any experience. Other than my own. An agreement in concept / theory. Misses the truth of lived, or shared. Experience. Authentic voices / representation. Cultural Identity, & actual missing, underrepresented, or differing perspectives, within. No group is a monolith. You cannot legislate attitudes. They are a long haul proposition. One that cannot be changed. Without examination & discussion. Discussions upon which. Our ( disabled people specifically ) & all progress generally. Depends.

American people deserve an urgent, robust, and professional response to the growing public health and economic crisis caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. That is what we got from the ARP. In addition, President Biden took swift action to tackle the climate emergency. Science now matter , and so does empowering American workers and businesses to lead a clean energy revolution. Also, think about the diversity in leadership now. This is scary for powerful white men. I get around a little bit online. Different media environments. Ive carried my I love Sam I Am banner all over the place but its not a huge topic in the chat rooms. When it has come up I tell the truth. The Suess people made the decision and obviously has historical meaning to them and i respect that. My personal experience is that my 1st grade teacher, who doubled as town librarian couldnt pry Dr. Suess out of my hands. She did and I moved on publicly but I became a closet Sue's reader ;) To this day, I myself dont see any racial disparity. I see colorful, mischievous interestingly shaped little characters who talk in rhymes and I love them! I've had and gave away so many copies. I'm on a waiting list at Amazon for the 4 or 5 classics. Im sad about "To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street" Always one of my faves.
The main theme for trumpets who, btw are definitely not conservative and not any recognizable Republican I've ever known is hard to categorize - in my circles they are trying to come up with reasons to diss the Covid bill, Biden and Democrats at large. They dont have the strength, the energy or the language to put up much of an argument about anything. They've lost a lot of steam.

I think that the switch of the Latino vote is also generational. Elders tend to be conservative esp those that are still super Catholic. For example, one of my aunts who is as liberal as they come (or so I thought) was over the moon when ACB was confirmed to scotus (they need to save the babies 🙄). That's literally all she saw and changed her mind about the cheeto admin.
Also, idk why ppl think the border wall will keep ppl out? Born and raised in the El Paso/Cd Juárez region and the only way to tackle issues there is more technology at points of entry 💁🏻‍♀️

"Politics has become for [Republicans] pure identity". I completely agree with this statement. The only issue I have is it is too narrow in scope.
At risk of sounding like a "both sides" type here, we should not ignore that the same is true of Democrats as well. I won't pretend like the effects this has on each party and it's voters are the same, but it is basically indisputable that nearly everyone in America today is motivated almost entirely by identity.
Understanding this is so incredibly important for understanding American politics today and I think it is harmful to suggest that it is a purely or primary Republican issue.
Again, I am not going to make false comparisons between the two parties when one of them is blatantly undemocratic and the other is not, but we shouldn't pretend that we are not influenced by the same forces Republicans are.
There's a lot of social science research to back this up by the way and you should read something like Why We're Polarized if you're interested in learning more.

To Jon's question at 16:54 "appeal beyond the(ir) base?": Yes. Check this new thing about 'super straights' (eugh!) It has appeal so long as they can get someone to feel/think that persons in power/authority are taking something away from them or giving them a label/moniker with negative attributes, they have not yet self-identified with.
I'm concerned that what's happening now in the US may have ramifications in Europe and the rest of the world. Historically, American culture tends to make it's course this way over time, presently more rapidly because of fast-tech connections & the way algorithms work.
Perhaps some EU policies may help shape progressive culture here to be more inclusive, but it also may not be enough. Where I live we still have partisan/tribal, and cultural/traditional divisions which impede some progressive societal inclusion.
What's happening now in the US, might not affect us, but I'm keeping my eyes and ears wide open.

And even if you get a job you use plenty of that money you make to pay back for your education . Is this just a way for someone to make money for lending out the money ?
