  • Senate Democrats pass Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, the fight for the $15 minimum wage continues, and Joe Manchin opens the door to reforming the filibuster. Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett and Tommy Vietor discuss the new covid relief bill, where the fight for the $15 minimum wage goes from here, and the possibility of eliminating the filibuster.

    Crooked believes that we need a better conversation about politics, culture, and the world around us-one that doesn’t just focus on what’s broken, but what we can do to fix it. At a time when it’s increasingly easy to feel cynical or hopeless, former Obama staffers Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor have created a place where people can have sane conversations that inform, entertain, and inspire action. In 2017 they started Crooked with Pod Save America-a no-bullshit conversation about politics. Since then, we continue to add shows, voices, and opportunities for activism, because it’s up to all of us to do our part to build a better world. That’s it. End of mission.

    I was in Sinema’s district when she was in the state legislature. I was in her district when she was in the House. Since being elected to Congress, she has sold out Arizonans and acts on the behalf of her donors. I don’t care about her fashion sense and I don’t care about using the thumbs down method of communicating her vote. However, after viewing her childish curtsy and hearing about her “let them eat cake” antics, I finally reached my limit with her. I communicated to her that her reversal of the political beliefs she held as a state legislator may be a signal that it’s time for Arizona to bring her home in 2024.

      I tend to feel those sorts of jokes from these sorts of people are... not a good idea. It's akin to the Satanic Temple claiming abortion as a religious rite to try to win cases in court. It's funny to us, because we know that it's absurd. But in a world where people actually believe the entire election was rigged by satan worshipping pedophiles and abortion is literally genocide, there's the potential for big, dangerous misunderstandings. And it's not like these are randos ranting on the side of the road; these are people who served in previous administrations; who may be seen as authority figures and "insiders". The wrong person might take that clip out of context, and then suddenly voila, you have #proof that everything was fraudulent because they hashtag-admitted-it. Which again, the rest of us know is idiotic because it was a joke, but if it gathered enough momentum online the context would get lost and left behind.

For the life of me I don't understand why the House bill didn't propose $600 a week to allow negotiation room. As someone who works in kitchens, there are a lot of people who can't make it on $15/hour and watch front of house employees take home hundreds in tips every night. We aren't sympathetic to them getting a lower base wage because they take home more every night than we do.
    I'm personally against tipping as a process -- I of course tip my servers, but the expectation has become ridiculous. 10% used to be standard, now it's close to 25%. You get asked to tip at fucking Wendy's now. We should take a look at Europe, where if you try to tip at a restaurant in Paris or Copenhagen or Munich, the server will consider it an insult because they get paid enough to feed their families. Everyone deserves a living wage, but my point is that there is resentment in the back of house at a restaurant when we get $50 in tips a week while front of house quadruples that in a night, and then they complain about having to give a portion of that to the back. Until that balance changes, I don't care about front of house workers being paid below minimum because they're still making more than me for the same amount of work, even though I have a set minimum.
    Also, the restaurant industry is completely fucked, at least in terms of bigger chains like, say, Chili's or Applebees -- abuse is rampant, people are denied overtime constantly, and owners take advantage of the fact that lower-paid employees can't possibly afford to fight for their rights. I'm going to stop myself from the late-night drunken ranting now, but I have plenty of inside information about this sector if anyone cares.

    The question is how in the world to pay for these bills and the increasing multi trillion dollar debt? Seems the simplest way would be stop the needless billions (or trillions) of excessive military spending, increase taxes for the very rich, and close tax loopholes for hugely profitable corporations that get to claim way less than their fair share earnings. But will politicians (on both sides) ever vote for these changes when those wealthy individuals and corporations are their biggest donors?

  • @cgwami
    @cgwami 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Probably a stupid question, but why not tie the corporate tax rate (still 21% in the US, right?) to the $15 minimum wage? So a corp could receive the 21% flat-rate, but only if they pay their staff at least the minimum $15/hr wage. Perhaps it could be a sliding scale depending on the hourly wage provided, but hopefully it would always incentivize corps to pay their staff at least the minimum wage. I’m likely not thinking this through completely.

      Of course there's a way. The minimum wage needs to be codified. Even Indonesia where I currently live has an annual minimum wage review based on economic realities in the various provinces and even according to economic areas inside each province. They also have direct elections for president. And police are not allowed to use deadly force except in extreme situations. They are legally required to aim for the lower leg if they have to use their guns, which is rare because nobody has a gun except for the police and military.

    Is the bill truly still at $1.9T? Some benefits were scaled back after making it through the Senate. I was confused why the number is staying consistent if benefits were scaled back.

    • @AllWIllFall2Me
      @AllWIllFall2Me 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Two big reasons:
      1. The Minimum wage loss isn't included in the value, since it's not technically a 'price' of the bill. That's partly why the parliamentarian argued it couldn't be included: yes, the assessment found it would increase the deficit by $54 billion, but the government wasn't paying that right now, as part of the bill: it was a result of the bill's effects on those losing work and needing Welfare. So the biggest 'loss' of the bill wasn't in the numbers.
      2. As long as the scaled down benefits were worth less than, with rounding, 70ish billion, they won't move the needle. If the bill was 1.94, and is now 1.86, those numbers would both still be rounded to 1.9. Like, that move to lower the payment threshold only saved 12 billion. The lowering of unemployment payments was countered with "but we're not taxing some of the benefits, and they'll last an extra month", so I think it ended up neutral, in that I can't find any notes on how much it affected the price tag.
      That's some people's frustration with the "moderate' stance being taken by Manchin: 12 billion out of 1.9 Trillion is 6/10s of one percent of the bill. He made sure several million people who DID get a bill under Trump now AREN'T, so he can brag about dropping the bill by less than 1 percent.
