At a time when it’s increasingly easy to feel cynical or hopeless, former Obama staffers Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor have created a place where people can have sane conversations that inform, entertain, and inspire action. In 2017 they started Crooked with Pod Save America-a no-bullshit conversation about politics. Since then, we continue to add shows, voices, and opportunities for activism, because it’s up to all of us to do our part to build a better world. That’s it. End of mission.

true. living in the UK even though Labour won, their vote share was down. the margins are low in the US and voters will just stay home and not vote for Biden. they will turn out for Trump. the damage is done. Biden thinks he can win but the longer this goes on voters will look at him and not think he is going to last 4 years. He should step down and let Harris run. she has a message and vision for the future and will get out the vote. she could do two terms.

Second mind is we absolutely need to get our shit together and get it together really fucking soon if we stand any chance of not having 4 years of chaos.

The chief concern I have right now is if Biden will be able to garner enough support to drive voter turnout against Trump. I totally agree with Jon's point that he just isnt able to make a strong case for himself anymore. His verbal misteps are far too noticeable and its not inspiring much confidence when you have an 81 year old man struggling to speak clearly and hes got another 4 years ahead of him. I personally dont care because I think Bidens a decent guy, hes done a lot for the country in his 4 years, and I trust he has a strong administration. I know that the other choice is far worse. But half the country doesn't pay as close attention to politics. I dont see the issue with Biden bowing out and him and the democratic party nominate another strong candidate to put all their support behind them. I think its important to show unity and have a clear message. For Gods sake we have so much ammunition against Trump but our weapons feel broken. Abortion rights, project 2025, future SCOTUS rulings and possible restructuring of the court overall. TRUMP IS A CONVICTED FELON! Also working towards strengthening the middle class and working towards affordable healthcare. Actual popular policy. Its just insane to me that we are so distracted by Biden's age right now that we cant make these super CLEAR arguments against a second Trump term. Its soul crushing.

Alabama modified theirs but Ohio has not so the delegates have to vote by August 7th. The convention is August 19th. Dementia Joe is going to keep pushing back and then on August 8th say, 'Well, too late to back out now, suckers.'

So I watched the rally he gave the next day and he seemed far better than debate night and I've been watching him since because if he says he is staying in then he is going to need some help to win. I watched the press conference last night from start to finish. I thought it didn't start well but once it got going I thought it was going well in the sense of, now I'm watching what a normal back and forth Q&A with the press looks like. It seemed like Biden clearly knew his stuff and is what I imagine he looks like in those meeting that the adminstration has talked about with him being focused and on top the issue at hand. I think he could talk about policy all day long. Personally I think if Biden stays in the race that he can win the election but its going to take everyone coming together to get it done. Since Biden is having some trouble communicating, let Kamala handle the press to get their message across and Biden can keep doing events and talking to voters. But president Biden will need to get the rest of the democrats on board and I think they will if he stays.

Addendum: I just watched Ron Klain on Morning Joe this morning. Ohhhhhh Myyyyyyy Godddddddddd.........
Ron looks terrible. Absolutely terrible. He just kept reciting campaign talking points like a robot. Voice sounds like anxiety levels are high. ..The general look on his face........ I am almost positive he knows Biden is going to lose.
I just saw Ron less than a year ago....and this is a BIG change.
Again, the vibe I got was......the writing likely on the wall. (me screams)
Another Addendum: The Biden campaign is in total denial. EVEN RACHEL MADDOW said, "Biden is loosing this race right now."
You say, "Looks like Biden is not doing well with Latinos." (All polls). They say, "No, we have a ton of support and you're an idiot and love Trump."
You say, "Looks like you are having problems with young voters compared to 2020." They say, "No, we've been all over the country and the excitement for Joe Biden is palpable among all the young people we see. You're an idiot and you want Trump to win for just asking that."
A TIED National Poll races is NOT Biden winning...........even a Biden +4 race does not mean he will win!!!!!
On Election Night, the Democrat needs to be 4% higher than the Republican in the national popular vote in order to be competitive for the electoral college. To determine if Biden is leading adequately in a national poll, add 4% to the Margin of Error and this how much Biden needs to be leading Trump by in said poll. (In 2020, Biden was always leading Trump nationally --outside the margin of error.)
So..........back to the National Popular Vote:
In 2000, 0.5% was NOT enough for Gore.
In 2016, 2% was NOT enough for Clinton.
In 2020, 4% was ALMOST NOT enough for Biden.
    Wake up, people.

If he keeps going to his record, he makes it too much about himself, when American voters have a pattern of ending up being reasonably clear headed about an incumbent's record (see the Allan Lichtman model if you doubt me), and what he really should be doing is making it a referendum on the extreme plans for the country that Trump and Trump allies have and Trump's insanity as a person.

I had so much admiration for the former Obama aides for so long. But that's gone now since the debate and their wrong reaction. All they, some Dem politicians, the donor class, and the corporate media - seem to want to do is to continue the discussion as if there were something to discuss. The truth is that the vast majority of people who want to keep "discussing" this are white men. Some are uncomfortable for the first time in their lives, and/or perhaps some are longing to regain the relevance of their glory days. So they want to cut and run or talk, talk, talk, talk, talk about it. Most of the rest of us - black, brown, and women of all stripes - want to move forward with the candidate we voted for in the primaries. And we think all the discussing actually hurts us not them; because they will experience the better outcomes like they always do. So as one of the latter group who fights everyday to defeat the fascists, I say let's circle the wagons and support the man we voted for - Joe Biden. I say this as a black woman knowing full well that these white males probably won't listen; because they falsely believe they have agency over us and know better than we do. But they do not. They won't listen to the Congressional Black Caucus. They won't listen to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. And they certainly won't listen to the millions of us - 14M to be exact - who voted in the primaries. So, I decided to ignore these guys and focus my ire on Project 2025. OMG! His record is what matters. It is historic. I'm beginning to despair of a lot of people today. They clearly have no clue whatsoever what Biden is doing.
Can you even list his many accomplishments? If he didn't have any, you'd be harping on that! But he has historic accomplishments, and you act like it's tepid and you're put out that he mentions it.
I'm going to give you some history that Biden has lived, and that I have, too. The New Deal under FDR was the most egalitarian era in US history. Prior to FDR, who brilliantly brought the US out of the great depression and through the second world war, there was the great depression. It was a terrible, terrible time. People sold their children because they couldn't feed them. People starved. People lived in makeshift "shantytowns" in muddy lots.
Before the depression was a labor uprising that was a war between rich industrialists and workers. It happened because the wealthy worked ordinary people to death, killed them with appalling working conditions, even children, for miserly pennies, while paying as little as possible, even forcing them to give up all their earnings at the company store. That stemmed from what was called the gilded age. Poverty was rampant. Half of all American children lived in poverty in 1900. Before that we had slavery, and we had been slaughtering Native Americans nonstop since Jamestown. There was also ample indentured servitude. Okay? America is not what people have told you all your life. It has been a country of the utmost cognitive dissonance. And the best it ever was economically for the 90% of Americans in it that were white was the New Deal era that lasted from 1935 to about 1970. Not even two generations. From Reagan on it is has been a backsliding into the worst of allowing the rich to run amuck, and it's at a critical juncture where it cannot continue.
Joe Biden remembers the benefits of the New Deal because he was a child and young adult at that time. I remember it, too. We had nothing like the wealth disparity we have now. In 1945 people who made more than $1 million were taxed at 94%. In 1960 the wealthiest people were still taxed at 91%. Biden is desperately trying to implement the principles and standards that provided the most benefit for the most Americans in all US history, including the colonial era. There is no new way to do it.
But you are bored with and dismissive of his accomplishments. Biden said something in Detroit today. Politics is not entertainment or reality tv. Right now it's the difference between a depraved Trump and loss of democracy, and decency and wisdom and the rule of law. Rick Wilson gets it thoroughly. You should listen to his most recent Lincoln Project Elephant In The Room podcast on Joe Biden's NATO summit performance. His message is for you and people like you.

I am somewhat reticent about him finishing another term or convincing enough Americans to support the Biden / Harris ticket for it to matter. The executive is not just one great man managing everything but a team working together in a collaborative / collective fashion. A candidate switch will drag down the rest of the ticket
      let's put it this way
I am voting for Biden. FOR Biden. Let's assume that both parties switch to saner candidates
If it were Biden v Romney...I would vote for Biden
If it were Harris v Romney...I would vote for Romney...
If it were Harris V Trump ...I would hold my nose and vote against Trump
A lot of people are not votng for Biden, they are voting against Trump. If you signal a lack of confidence at the top of the ticket (or lack of confidence and swap in a lesser candidate -which Harris is-because most people don't pay attention) you could potentially push people to throw up their hands and not vote against Trump-just not vote.
If you make the change you risk the Presidency, House and Senate go Republican simply because you have an enthussiastic Trump base that will vote and the change to Harris will deincentivize people the on the fence Independents and Republicans-
The argument people are making is that Harris will energize the Democratic base. Nope. That kind of switch might be an oomph for the all in but I talk to people that say if they switch to Harris, they are considering NOT voting.
Let's also not forget the fact that a switch can be portrayed as the old timey party bosses picking the candidate-something that is likely to turn off some Democratic voters.
Also, it likely would result in a contested convention-which might allay the portrayal of the party bosses controlling the process. and it would still be-bad optics BUT the real problem is that Ohio with its 17 Electoral College votes and strong union sentiments is in play but the deadline for getting on the Ohio ballot is before the Convention. DNC rules allow for the primary winner to be made the nominee through a virtual process but it would be hard to reschedule and run a contested convention before the deadline-Ohio votes to Trump without a fight
My personal opinion-which is not as rare as some people think-
I can handle Harris as the "heartbeat away from the Presidency with an octogenarian at the top but I wouldn't vote for her for President (except in this case, I am motivated enought to go out and vote against Trump) I think Harris as the Presidential candidate is an awful idea. (Love Newsome and Whitmer however.)

I'm an average voter, and you guys were starting to convince me that maybe he should step aside. But I actually thought he did great, and he cemented my support.
He spent half an hour answering questions about mostly his mental status, when the thing itself was about NATO. And he didn't side-step any of that. He answered the questions regardless.
I think he seemed more human, and more of a leader, than the debate. The debate he looked frail, and finding out he had a cold it made sense, but he also talked slow and the shots of him looking so old and blank.
I follow politics, but I'm no pundit or commentator or insider. I have a bachelor's in political science that I've done nothing with since I got it 14 years ago.
I'm very happy with how he did last night. He looked strong. He flubbed, I said oops, and he didn't make a mistake again. He looked like he wanted to elaborate points but knew he didn't have the time (thus the half finished thoughts and stuff).
I'm an average person. I also don't side with a political party. Idgaf what famous people or other politicians say. I care about what I see from the president himself. The debate worried me. I didn't watch the GS interview. I caught Morning Joe. I'm no longer worried.
I did wish he spoke more about Project 2025, especially because it does call out stuff about foreign policy (like leaving NATO). And he finally did at the end.
I liked him showing defensiveness too, because it meant he still cared. He cares about how he's perceived, and he wants to fix that.
His last smirk comment, he should've said "listen to his flubs" instead of "listen to him". But beyond that and the beginning flub, I'm happy with my support.
That said, I'd proudly vote for VP Harris. She's a bomb lady and speaker. And she would absolutely kick ass too.

There is an obvious way to deal with this, a wise statesman, a successful President, does what he promised and guides in a new generation. Where only the best of Biden would matter in his endorsements and campaigning, and the worst of Biden would no longer have any teeth, as he won't be there as President. It would be the most graceful of exits, the wisest. And despite that, possibly one of the least ego driven candidates fails this simple test.

Also some of the Labour candidates who took a hit didn't make a lot of sense based on only Gaza. Like Jess Phillips publically resigned her Shadow cabinet post in order to vote for an immediate ceasefire motion and she had her majority slashed to a fraction of what it was before (but still won)

We have one candidate that has spent the majority of his term sweeping up the damage from the previous candidate and is the most progressive president in our lifetimes. Yes he is old, yes he is showing signs of aging. It does not take away or make him less of a choice compared to the Republican Party leader.
The other candidate has been hiding from media due to the fact he raped a 13 year old, appeared multiple times on Epsteins flight manifests and was twice impeached for failure of duty.
Yet folks with a vast audience of people who seek guidance and political mental-refuge like, feel the need to stoke these opinions on Biden rather than focus on Project 2025 or the twice impeached rapist.
Why can’t anyone seem to zoom out enough to look at the big picture? It’s a choice between democracy and fascism. That should be where the buck stops. Anything else is stoking the rights confidence in taking this country over

The young vote has never seen Biden's full tenure as a political figure and won't have that perspective, all they see is an old man in cognitive decline and we need to talk about it. 4 months is a long time. If France can pull it out of their ass and win back with so little time, why can't the U.S? It's an insult to the people who have fears over this to just shrug and be complacent. "Don't compare me to the almighty' has become 'It is what it is, shut up and fall in line.' And that point is faltering with each day Biden regresses.

I still think most democratic primary voters would have chosen someone else if we knew what we know now. Voters would not have any problem with moving on if he was in a coma or died of natural causes. We are smart enough to understand that humans can become incapacitated at any age. That is what vice presidents are for. The fact that his condition is so borderline makes this so damn hard. If he was ranting like a total madman like trump, but still did not want to give-up, there would be less angst about it. However, I still think he would be a real hero if he took one for team like Al Frankin did.

All I can think of, is that perhaps he could let Harris be president, and he could stay on as a top advisor. He claimed that he had an agenda to complete, but he won't accomplish anything if Benedict Donald wins the Electoral College. Harris could pledge to complete the agenda to satisfy that desire with a greater chance of it actually happening. You can't tell me he is the only one who can carry out a policy agenda.

My concern is that there's no one offering names of who could beat Trump. It has to be someone moderate and that people trust for independents and moderate Republicans to vote blue. The biggest mistake of 2016 was having Hillary Clinton be the nominee. Democrats didn't understand how much she was hated. I really believe had it been Bernie Sanders, Trump never would've won. I actually think Bernie would have a good chance against Trump despite being progressive because he is honest and fights for the little guy, but he's also old. Someone like Gavin Newsom would probably lose because Trump will spew lies about his record in CA, and even many Democrats feel like the homeless problem, crime, and home prices are out of hand. I really like Pete Buttigieg, but are Americans ready for a gay president? Someone like Gretchen Whitmer is pretty unknown. Can she build the trust and confidence on a national scale in such a short time? What would it say about Harris if someone other than her, the VP, becomes the nominee? As for Harris, I don't know if the undecided voters we need will be willing to vote for a Black woman when a white woman lost to Trump.
That's the problem I see. Are there any alternatives who have a better chance of beating Trump (most polls are showing no), and will the likely chaotic process of choosing that nominee cause more harm than staying with the status quo? I think Biden will be most likely be the nominee. Democrats are tearing down their candidate, and this chaos is not only hurting his campaign, it makes the whole party look incompetent. How do they expect to convince undecided voters after saying he's mentally unfit? If Biden isn't a strong communicator (which never was his strength), we need more people representing him doing interviews to say everything that he's not saying, the way Kelly Anne Conway and numerous awfully annoying people did for Trump.
IMO, everyone needs to calm down and stop trashing Biden publicly. If there's a way to convince him behind the scenes, you can do that all day long, or find a more constructive way to say you'd prefer a different candidate. But this negative hysteria is not helpful if we want to beat Trump.
