Obama Staffers Explain The State Of The Union Address | Let's Break It Down

  • This week on Let’s Break It Down, Jon Favreau (former White House Director of Speechwriting for President Barack Obama) talks to Alyssa Mastromonaco about what it’s like to write the State of the Union address ahead of Joe Biden's first Joint Address to Congress. Then they reveal the decision-making processes behind other important details including who the Designated Survivor will be.
Pardon our goof at 20:54 when Alyssa accidentally refers to Harry Reid as Senate Minority Leader, when in fact he was Majority Leader at that time.

Crooked believes that we need a better conversation about politics, culture, and the world around us-one that doesn’t just focus on what’s broken, but what we can do to fix it. At a time when it’s increasingly easy to feel cynical or hopeless, former Obama staffers Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor have created a place where people can have sane conversations that inform, entertain, and inspire action. In 2017 they started Crooked with Pod Save America-a no-bullshit conversation about politics. Since then, we continue to add shows, voices, and opportunities for activism, because it’s up to all of us to do our part to build a better world. That’s it. End of mission.

Oh wow, I had no idea about "designated survivor"! When you first started talking about it, I assumed you meant like a part of the speech where the president references some citizen is named and highlighted for overcoming some great hardship in the previous year like bad corn crop season or something, and then talk about their survival and resolve to move forward with the president's agenda. Only later did I realize you were talking about someone absent from the SOTU in case the whole place goes down. Yikes, yeah, I wouldn't want that phone call either! This is a very interesting video, thanks for sharing this!

This is - again - such an inspiring, informative and entertaining look behind the work: Thank you very much from Europe!
Many people don't realize how important how many people actually are to make the running of an administration seem somewhat smoothly.
That's one of the many reasons we (Europe) were so extremely worried about the last government. Not only with them discarding bipartisan traditions left and right (couldn't resist) but with them discarding people in such a rapid fire way. It's a really efficient way to destroy the clockwork routines of any administration. Many people don't realize that in the end this means no clean running water and no garbage disposal in their street.
