  • The end of the pandemic may finally be in sight, the House passes historic voting rights legislation, and Joe Biden offers his support to unionizing workers at Amazon. Jon Favreau and Dan Pfeiffer discuss the continuing distribution of the covid-19 vaccine and the latest on the coronavirus relief bill. Then, they break down HR-1 and the Republican efforts to increase voter suppression on the state level. Finally, they discuss Biden's comments on unions and their history with the Democratic party.

    Crooked believes that we need a better conversation about politics, culture, and the world around us-one that doesn’t just focus on what’s broken, but what we can do to fix it. At a time when it’s increasingly easy to feel cynical or hopeless, former Obama staffers Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor have created a place where people can have sane conversations that inform, entertain, and inspire action. In 2017 they started Crooked with Pod Save America-a no-bullshit conversation about politics. Since then, we continue to add shows, voices, and opportunities for activism, because it’s up to all of us to do our part to build a better world. That’s it. End of mission.

    • @pakde8002
      @pakde8002 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not weird just an old "democracy" that owes more to the classical Greek understanding of democracy than what Americans have been told democracy means in the context of the republic. Just as in ancient Greece, the founders never intended that everyone should have the right to vote and until relatively recently that idea has been in force and still is stubbornly clung to by Republicans apparently.

    • @AllWIllFall2Me
      @AllWIllFall2Me 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      To broaden on Pak's point a little more, and to integrate into it some of Mash's point: the US's democracy has the flaw that the nation has been able to avoid some of the most destructive events of the last 100+ years, and therefore hasn't needed to radically alter its Constitution and governmental structure in that time...and therefore it still has the bias and flaws of that era held in it, and its attempts to purge those issues has long been stymied due to an inability to rebuild the foundations, as it were.
      It's weird because it's like a computer running an OS that should have been replaced decades ago: it's kitbashed a bunch of workarounds to stay functional, but we need to either make more sweeping alterations to get it truly functional.

    Give the checks to everyone as originally planned and deal with who gets to keep it in the traditional manner, by claiming it as income and taxing the full amount at 100% in some obscure section on your income tax form. Problem solved. The threshold discussion is avoided and forgotten.

    • @sasserine
      @sasserine 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would also bypass the idiocy, of means-testing access to the checks, based on 2019 income, when the person has lost their job, or seen a drop in income throughout 2020.
      This is how the UK resolved it.
      You don't need to piss about, quibbling if someone has other sources of income (shares, property letting, etc), because if they did, it would come out on their tax return, and they'd be earning over the personal threshold, and be giving some back.

    Doesn’t getting rid of the filibuster stand a strong chance of backfiring massively?? If the senate is already the chamber that favors the republicans the most, why would we want to make it easier for a theoretical future GOP senate to pass bad legislation?

    • @its_art
      @its_art 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is definitely a risk. But sometimes you have to take a risk in order to move forward.
      Killing the filibuster allows us to take our fate into our own hands. Yes, we will have to beat Republicans to prevent them from abusing the lack of the filibuster, but at least we're giving ourselves a fighting chance! And I am confident that if the Biden administration does good work, and we organize, campaign and vote, then we can beat Republicans under HR1.
      If we don't kill the filibuster, then HR1 cannot pass, and we will not receive a chance to fight. We will very likely get kicked out of the House by gerrymandering, and elections in general will become much harder to win because of voter suppression, which is going to jeopardize our control of the Senate and the presidency to boot. Moreover, the impact of voluntary work during elections will diminish, which (in my opinion) is a disservice to everyone who has fought hard to get us into the current position of legislative power and everyone who might do so in the future.
      So it's either: We kill the filibuster and give ourselves a fighting chance; or we don't kill the filibuster and resign ourselves to an opposition with slightly more power in the Senate.
      Closing Remark: Let's be real, the filibuster might prevent Republicans from passing the most egregious nonsense in the Senate, but it certainly doesn't prevent (and hasn't prevented) them from running the country into the ground through other means (e.g. budget reconciliation). This is especially true right now, when the worst thing we can do is *do nothing*. In the face of urgent crises, such as climate change, the filibuster disproportionately punishes the party that actually wants to pass urgent legislation. Republicans, who (for the most part) simply don't want to do anything about climate change, don't care nearly as much about getting blocked by the filibuster as Democrats do. Being able to filibuster pro-life bills won't do us much good once equatorial regions are literally on fire.

  • @sandeesandwich2180

    There are other tweaks that could be done to the filibuster that might help a ton. And would have the advantage of Manchin being able to say he held strong on keeping the filibuster while some of the fangs being removed from it. One tweak is to put the onus on the minority to block a bill, instead of the way it is now where the minority just has to send an email saying "nah"., and it is on the majority to overcome the block. In other words, the minority has to back up their objections with real effort.
    The other thing that would help is if voters really understood what the current filibuster really is, since I think there probably are still a lot of people who think of "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" when the issue comes up. Quaint and romantic, but nothing at all like current reality.

    If you think about it. If the stimulus money idea is to get to the people who really need it then I tend to think the 75000 gang isn't hurting quite as much as the roof layer who makes 40,000. 75 is not much different than 80gran. Imho if stimulus money is not being spent and the thought is citizens are putting their stimulant money under their mattresses, it isn't the 25.000g people putting money under their mattresses. So changing from 75 to 80 is not solving any problem whatsoever. The cutoff for governmental purposes, for the feds to save a bit of money, realistically should have a cut off of who needs it should go to single people who make a max of about 55000. And couples $110,00

    I’m not a big Pod Save guy but this episode was pretty good. They’re on the right side of the issues. The only major criticism I have is that the hosts give Biden too much benefit of the doubt. Biden uses McConnell and Republicans as excuses for his inaction, just like he uses Sinema and Manchin as excuses, and they’re all fine with it. In case you haven’t noticed, Biden isn’t putting pressure on Republicans, he isn’t putting pressure on conservative Democrats… he’s doing nothing while placing blame on everyone else. I would give him credit if he were out there publicly calling out Manchin and Sinema and McConnell every day until they cave. But he’s not doing that. That’s the bare minimum, and he’s not even doing that.
    Also, I love the phrase “Joe Manchin cul de sac” and I will be stealing it. 🙂

      Public pressure on your own senators is best way to move things. Once you've called them yourself start convincing as many other people in Iowa to do the same. The next best thing is to get people in other states to call their respective senators. If you know anyone in West Virginia lean on them to lean on Manchin. You can certainly try contacting him yourself but they generally only care if its from their own constituents.

    • @Nihilist_Porcupine
      @Nihilist_Porcupine 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's less about financial assistance and more about stimulating the economy. People who might otherwise save out of fear of losing their jobs and having to dip into savings, would feel better about buying things and spending money... thus keeping businesses open. It does maybe make sense for there to be a cutoff, because for some people $1,400 doesn't matter at all, and would just get thrown in an investment portfolio or spent on Gucci or something. But 75k is not that income. 100k probably isn't that income, either. Unless you own your home outright and never dipped into your savings to pay a dental/medical bill or something.

    From what I understand the checks are $1,400 because more people are actually eligible (millions of poor adult dependents who were not eligible for the first and second rounds of stimulus will now be eligible). Not to mention, those who have child dependents are also going to receive more money that they rightfully need to support their children. This would cut child poverty in half and bring millions of families out of poverty. So yes, the cut-off is at $80,000/year for single filers but ngl if you make that much money (and prob work from home too) you really do not need the stimulus check... You are already doing your job in stimulating the economy, and definitely not living paycheck to paycheck. I am certainly more concerned about the child who doesn't know where their next meal is coming from, or where they're going to sleep that night... Or for a parent who is picking between feeding their children or paying their rent... Republicans wanted a $50,000/year cut... I agree the stimulus checks should be $2,000, but I am hopeful that they will come up with another relief package. I also agree a $15 minimum wage absolutely needs to be sorted out ASAP... Even the Republican Gov. of WV said that he would agree with it yet Manchin is still sitting on his ass.
