  • The fallout continues from last week’s Trump-inspired attack on the U.S. Capitol, as the House prepares to impeach Donald Trump for the second time, and the President’s personal Twitter account is banned forever. Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett and Tommy Vietor discuss the failures of the Capitol Police and potential consequences for the president, Josh Hawley, Ted Cruz, and House Republicans for voting against Joe Biden's election certification. Then, they discuss Trump's ban from Twitter, Facebook and ...Pinterest, as well as Parler being taken off of Amazon Web Services.

    Crooked believes that we need a better conversation about politics, culture, and the world around us-one that doesn’t just focus on what’s broken, but what we can do to fix it. At a time when it’s increasingly easy to feel cynical or hopeless, former Obama staffers Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor have created a place where people can have sane conversations that inform, entertain, and inspire action. In 2017 they started Crooked with Pod Save America-a no-bullshit conversation about politics. Since then, we continue to add shows, voices, and opportunities for activism, because it’s up to all of us to do our part to build a better world. That’s it. End of mission.

    Food for thought: Jurors' decisions are anonymous, in part for the safety of the jurors. Should impeachment votes also become anonymous? You can convincingly argue that senate members are putting themselves in danger by voting for impeachment. And this will give republican senators the cover they need to do the right thing.

If this was coupled with a foreign attack, which is not unrealistic, the military would have had a hard time dealing with the lose of the majority of elected officials. Fomenting insurrection and discontent is not a first amendment issue. Once you’ve done it once you can do it again in the space of a few moments, so short of curating Trumps Twitter feed a ban was absolutely necessary.

    • @Thaisithais
      @Thaisithais 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would it be fair to say, though, that other groups have fomented discontent and even threatened “revolution” and not only did they do it with the blessing of the left and the media, but never had their feeds banned? Just trying to remain fair and objective here.

    • @Ohhelmno
      @Ohhelmno 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Thaisithais I think it would be fair to say some defended and justified some of the BLM protest looting and whatnot, which was bad, in mine and most rational Americans minds... and absolutely shouldn’t have been condoned. And if it was or continued threats were being made, they should’ve also been banned or removed. However, when the people who hold the levers of power are the ones doing it, I think that takes on a different meaning. Especially when the people who are being excited into action are being lied to and told something happened for which there is no rational evidence. I’m not going to pretend to equivalate looting a Target to storming the capitol and attempting to capture and execute lawmakers, though. These are two different things completely. Is it fair to say anyone who calls for violence or looting should be removed from public discourse? I would say yes. Are these events on two completely different levels? Yes. So, while I think anyone calling for violence or violent revolution should be banned from Twitter, Facebook, etc... there’s just not really a comparison between the riots/protests in June andJuly and storming the Capitol a few days ago.

    • @Thaisithais
      @Thaisithais 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Ohhelmno I agree with you that these events are on different levels. But when it comes to the premise of violence itself, there seem to be wildly different standards applied to the left than the right. What I hear conservative friends complain about the most is precisely the hypocrisy with which events are portrayed. This pisses a lot of people off and to be honest I have noticed it myself on more than one occasion.
      I couldn’t agree more with you when you say it’s important to note when the people who hold the levers of power are the ones doing it. But then again, I think it’s also fair to point out that both parties have power. I would dare say in a way the Democrats have more, even if the Republicans held the presidency. The left largely controls the majority of MSM, higher education institutions and the culture in this country at this time. This gives me the impression sometimes that they do the things they themselves condemn without worrying that they will be portrayed as the wrong side, ever. So, I promise I’m trying to remain as neutral as possible, but who should we fear most, the party that is calling for equal treatment and being bludgeoned from every single angle, or the party that can do no wrong? I don’t like Trump...but sometimes I felt that the other side of the balance was pretty frightening as well.

    • @Ohhelmno
      @Ohhelmno 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Thaisithais yeah, I mean I agree that the rules should be applied equally. I don’t have much control over that, personally, but I can see where some of the anger comes from. I just wish we could all debate from a shared set of facts, as opposed to how things are now where the two sides see completely different worlds and hear completely different things. Again, I think most Americans would agree that the rules should be applied evenly, but all I can do is point out where I see it. Nobody should be allowed to be violent or burn or loot or steal no matter what side they belong to, but as we’ve both said, we also can’t pretend when people play whataboutism that every situation is equivalent, and just because one thing was overlooked doesn’t mean the other should be.

    The lack of a briefing from any government agency about these events is disconcerting. I can think of only two possible explanations - neither or which are good. (1) They are knee-deep in investigation, arrests and counter-terrorism investigations while anticipating another round of violent insurrection within the next week. and/or (2) Trump loyalists in the upper ranks of those agencies are failing to do their job either by neglect or out of deliberate conspiratorial intent.
