Revisiting the updated ATR 72 600 with a quick flight in Microsoft Flight Simulator

  • A fun flight from Helena to Big Creek in the ATR 72 600 following it's update - primarily to see any direct impact from the changes. The first take-away? It's turning into a wonderful aircraft. Obviously I hardly scratch the surface in this video - but you'll start to get some idea of the level of modelling and fidelity present.
    I'm still learning the ATR - and still a little "at sea" with it's operation. I have a lot to learn around managing the engines properly, for example. Also - there was some strangeness around missing airfields in the MCDU - I need to look into that.

    I flew on one of these in real life yesterday (from Naxos to Athens) absolutely loved it! Got home from holiday today and immediately downloaded it. The deceleration is realistic. I was thrown forward in my seat when we landed at LGAV

    Liked watching.
    I have a couple of friends who fly AT76 for Air New Zealand.
    They've told me normal climb speed is 170kts.
    It's an ATR figure not the airlines.
    Probes are turned on early in cockpit prep.
    Also when Hotel mode is used the Wing lights are switched on to warn ground crew. 19:43

      The discount on the ATR ended today. It was ok for £10 but certainly would not have paid nearly £17 for it as it is now. I felt it just didn’t feel like a turboprop, despite the high wings it felt more like flying a low wing jet plane. Yes the avionics are ok and it looks reasonably realistic. It was ok for the special offer price but I’d not have paid the full price it’s not worth it. If I run short on memory it’s one I’d consider removing from my hard drive. They should have made a Dash 8 q400 instead. Now that would have been awesome!

    I revisited the ATR after not touching it much after my initial flights from release. I do quite like it now after not thinking much of it at the time. I did encounter a weird issue where a prop animation wasn't working but to the best of my knowledge everything appeared to be working correctly and performance was as expected. Other flights I haven't encounter this issue so guess a bug of somekind maybe.

    I understand why people like to input the flight plan, but in all honesty and as in real life just getting the flight plan from ACARS is so much safer and is becoming the standard now.
    In the case of the ATR you can now Import from simbrief and they have updated the simbrief downloader to work with the ATR so no need to mess around with the flight plan trying to use the Aerosoft CRJ version.
    I know not everyone has simbrief but honestly it is one of the best investments you can make if you want to fly these "Expert planes" The ATR FMS and the NAVDATA itself is still buggy, and thats why in the video there was a missing waypoint, with a simbrief sub this wont happen as the simbrief NavData overrides the NavBlu data as far as I know and it all just works, the way it should.

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  ปีที่แล้ว

      It would be good to get some feedback from current pilots on this - about how much their company gives them, versus how much they have to finish off by hand. I'm willing to bet company routes are on the bare bones - the airways and intersections. The SID, STAR, initial climb, weights, performance data, and so on would be too variable. Dispatch would give them the final details over the radio, if not in the OFP they carry to the aircraft.

    • @delg551
      @delg551 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jonbeckett yes of course not all of it is given by ACARS, But punching in all the way points is error prone and a time waste especially on 45 min turnarounds. It is very common in the USA, with the pilots finishing up the routing and weights etc That's why I specifically said flight plan, meaning the route.
      Although I have heard some carriers actually do it all, and then adjustments are made via the load sheets.

    • @jonbeckett

    • @dias_se
      @dias_se ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jonbeckett From doing some more research I found that you are right. It is an automatic boost pump (that does its own thing when on). The throttles no longer work. They are fine in start-up and taxi but as soon as you take off and pull the throttles back to notch you no longer have any control. Any physical throttle movement results in no simulator movement or throttle control nor do keyboard throttle commands (F1-F4) work. The plane is no longer controllable.

    Sadly, this aircraft remains an absolute mess! There is a major bug which prevents the aircraft engines from starting when using cold and dark. I have spent hours trying to work out what is going on. Sometimes I cannot get Hotel Mode working. All apears fine until I disconnect external power and the aicraft reverts to battery power only. Other times I manage to get engine 2 started but engine 1 will not start. Sometimes I cannot get either engine to start.
    The different options (cold and dark, hotel mode, etc) are a waste of time. When neither engine started this evening, I pressed ready for taxi. Even though external power was stiull connected the outboard displays shut down and neither engine would start.
    My fear is that the developer who released this beta-version of the aircraft also developed the CRJ.... which, more than 12 months on, is still full of bugs and problems.
    It seems as though he develops something really good.... upto a point.... gets bored and then abandons it. My fear is that he will do the same with the ATR.... VERY DISAPPOINTING

      This is the worst kind of bug…. The intermittent variety 😊

    • @damerval
      @damerval ปีที่แล้ว

      The cold and dark bug is not intermittent, it's just that the battery drains regardless of the external power being on. If it takes too long to program the route or do the other checklist items, the engines won't start regardless of the external power being on or not. I'm not sure exactly how long it takes but it's more or less 10-15 minutes. If you go into hotel mode first thing every time, you don't get the issue. Also I think the engines not starting on external power is a sim-wide issue since I get the same thing with the Islanders.
