  • Today we take the Cessna 182 RG II for a flight from Duxford down to Elstree in Microsoft Flight Simulator (we originally set out for Wycombe Air Park, but change course mid-flight). Another wonderful aircraft from Carenado - perhaps one of their best!

    What a great aeroplane for GA enthusiasts. Ok, it's not study level, but that doesn't stop you following correct procedures, checklists etc. It actually looks to me as though Carenado have lifted their game with this one and I for one, will enjoy it for a long time. Thanks for the review.

    This plane is so enjoyable, great details and sound and like you say; a Cessna with good ground handling (nosewheel) and autopilot.

    The Cessna 182 Skylane seats 4 large people comfortably. It is larger and heavier than the 172. SWEET flying airplane!!!

    The 182 was what Gerrie Mock used for her round the world trip. She was the first woman to complete the trip! Her’s was a tail dragger.

    Thanks for this Johnathon. So glad you diverted to Elstree. That's my home base, and now with the 182. I went to school at Haberdashers just a half mile east, from 1957-1967. Now an expat in Santa Cruz, CA. My similar local airport is KWVI which you might try using when exploring the Monterey Bay and Big Sur.

    I do enjoy your sensitive approach to price, skill level, game requirements etc, in evaluating aircraft. I bought this one and love it, but also just bought the BS King Air and love it equally. All depends on what level you feel like flying at. Kudo's Jonathan for the fair assessment. This ones a very useful add.

    I have been waiting for this! One of the favorite planes I ever flew IRL. It looks like they sort of fixed the issue that they had with the regular 182 where you can't hardly see out of the side windows!

    Looks absolutely stunning. I have a couple Carenado aircraft so far in the sim and I really enjoy how photorealistic they are. Their sounds are usually among the best as well so despite the systems depth they sometimes lack, they do really excel at a great FEELING while flying, which sometimes contributes more to immersion and fun in the simulator.
    I don't like to be a snob but I really do think this is a bar more aircraft need to hit - besides A2A a lot of devs tend to focus on either visuals or simulation fidelity, not both.

    I've purchased everything Carenado has offered to the sim so far and this is certainly going to be another one. The quality of the texturing is amazing as usual, but this one seems to have even more detail. As you mentioned the engine sound is great. Some people complained about the engine sound in the other Carenado 182, but if you watched videos of the real plane they were practically identical. The sound was changed in the recent update, and its ok I guess, but I sort of liked the original. Anyway, I'm glad to see release of the 182 RG and I'm sure I'll be spending a lot of time with it. Thanks for posting another incredible video!

    Thank-you so much for sharing your cockpit with us, and I most appreciate your succinct, yet thorough review of the C182 RG. My name is Guerry, and I'm from America. I'm a total new-be to MSFS, and I've been searching for a transition aircraft to take me from the 152 into a complex aircraft. As of now, the 182 RG seems to be the best for that which suits my needs. Although the 182 RG will not receive a ticket for speeding, it is certainly the most robust retractable single engine aircraft I've seen. Especially given its landing gear design, I look forward to using any level piece of terrain long enough.
    The one thing that kept throwing me was where in the world was its fuel flow meter. I am so accustomed to seeing an analogue gauge next to the other instruments, yet it was not there. Finally, after staring at images of different instrument panel displays, I found it to the left of the COM/NAV equipment at the bottom of the panel. And so, the mystery is solved, Holms! How embarrassing.
    Since at one time I was current as a pilot, I am so used to the old way of navigation that strictly utilized VOR's and DME's. All of the newer glass instruments will have to be put on the back burner until I hone my skills with MSFS much better. With the option for the older instrument panel, it is another reason the 182 RG is attractive.
    Again sir, I am most grateful for your review. I look forward to your next post. Turning left final, out.

    Great overview - looks like one of their best, up there with the 170 and 337. I love little details on Carenado planes like the dirt around the window sills. Really makes it feel like a proper used aircraft.

    - You forgot to set the QNH before taking off :)
    - You took off from runway 06 instead of 24, not important...
    - The autopilot is the standard KAP 140 by Asobo so its behavior is not decided by Carenado, it works like in all other aircraft that use it.
    - I wish I could see the aircraft at night to see the panel night lighting

    edit : Would be nice if it had an option to have no gps, just a panel full of radios and proper DME (not just the one on the GPS). Not sure about the in-game checklists, they seem to be copy pasted from one of Carenados twins, the engine start checklist refers a lot to the left engine and tells me to check the annunciators for L ENG GLOW at one point. I do like the way the VOR signal flickers in and out a bit at the edges of the range of the beacon though.

    Not being a pilot in any sense of the word, but didn't you take off from the wrong end of the runway ? The heeding bug which was set to 24 was at the bottom on take off. Shouldn't it have been at the top ? (Please feel free to educate me if required ).
    Despite not looking for a Cessna, This plane does look very tempting..

      Heading bug doesn't matter much, but he took off into the wind wich is the correct orientation, you can see the windsock at the end of the runway. I am also not a pilot though... :)

      @stephenbull2026 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AdamVonSzabo Ok, I see he put the heading bug in the direction the wind was blowing. That makes perfect sense. I am used to putting it in the direction i am taking off. , Thanks for explaining that. I think i will adopt that instead.

    It has annoying and unrealistic head mounted flashlight when flying at night. You can't turn it off. Sad.

    As is usual with Carenado, it's all "pretty" textures and a massive lack of systems depth.

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's done to a budget, and to a mass audience. If all aircraft were study level, they would take a year to make, would cost many times as much, and would lose the interest of 80% or more of the audience.

      @jonbeckett OK, I rescind my previous comment.
      I bought Carenado's Seneca V, Seminole, V35B, and M20R all within the last month (out of boredom) and I am quite impressed.
      I looked at their website and they have an insurmountable number of planes that I'd love to have in the Sim. They just need to port them over from the older Sims.
      My apologies if I came off with an aggressive tone.

    Agree totally..Re: favorite Cessna. It’s sounds great and flys great. It may be my new favorite. Six cylinders vs four is a very big deal .
