BEHRINGER FCB1010 - 6 cool mods: phantom power, pedal errors, CTRL button, reliable buttons, UnO...

  • Behringer FCB1010 MIDI foot controller is an "entry-level quality" product, but now unique in the market, it's "inspired" by my beloved ROLAND FC-200 (high quality), unfortunately no more manufactured, and the successor FC-300 doesn't meet my requirements in ergonomics and layout.
I did these mods to make FCB1010 fit my needs for my 2nd "light" equipment... (for the 1st I continue with FC200)
    1:37 - MODs OVERVIEW
    5:05 - LET'S OPEN THE FCB1010 and overview inside
    6:10 1 - UnO FIRMWARE by Ossandust
The only mod not of mine, to get more interesting features to add flexibility to controller, just replacing the EPROM inside: www.ossandust.be
I suggest also to download the FREE windows editor to program your FCB 1010, compatible with both original and UnO firmware: host.mtnsys.com:81/faq-fcb/PCE...
7:54 2 - ONE CABLE FOR MIDI + POWER SUPPLY (low voltage)
No high voltage mains on the floor, no search for a mains socket, just the MIDI cable, with some enhancement... :-)
Behringer could have saved money avoiding the 110/220V section in the board and adding more quality in the rest... :-/
    12:23 3 - EXPRESSION PEDALS ERROR correction
Badly engineered, they don't modify the parameter in all the run of the pedal (regardless of the adjustments in the menu) I could modify the board, but I have found an even easier solution for you, if you experience the the same problem.
Just have some shopping in a supermarket before, and ask a white plastic shopping bag... :D
16:09 4 - RELIABLE SWITCHING, replacement of all switches below the buttons
They are of low quality, unreliable in the long term and with same switching problem when pressed with feet slanted. With less then 2$, and a lot of patience you will get a reliable switching.
18:44 5 - PROTECTION SHAFT to separate last button from 1st pedal
PGdown button and the 1st pedal are too close and while pressing PGdown it's easy to inadvertently touch the 1st pedal. This shaft will solve the problem.
You could say "use for volume the other pedal instead !", but I want for it the closer one to buttons area.
    22:55 6 - ADD A CTRL BUTTON MOMENTARY/TOGGLE BUTTON
I wanted in FCB1010 a CTRL button like the ROLAND FC200... too much useful.
I was able to do it even reproducing the momentary action (push-ON release-OFF) with the help of an additional ARDUINO board with my C++ like program inside.
I don't know if there are already other solutions for it, but I had fun doing it by myself. :D
    For advanced technicians !
If a toggle action is just enough for you, you can get the same result just working with the windows editor and UnO firmware, no need of hardware modifications.
NOTE: I tipically use Program Change mode for all buttons, not stomp mode neither partially. When I need to change 1 effect maintaining the same program, I prefer to use control change and program my rack to react as desired.
I do this using double pression of number buttons (ALT option) or through a variable action of my new CTRL button (for each program I can choose the function I want), or, again, through the second Epression pedal. 3 ways for each program are enough for me.
Good or bad this is how I prefer to drive my rack.
    =====================================
Please be aware that all these modifications will VOID THE WARRANTY (maybe with the only exception of the protection shaft), so mod responsibly ! :)
    Enjoy!

Oh my! THere are some killer mods! I came up with couple of mods too: 1.Change the springs of the footswitches to more soft, because in my opinion original ones are too stiff. 2. Add foam rubber soft pads under the expression pedals to reduce hitting sound(it's useful for bedroom use, bc the noise was relatively loud).

Based on your video, I've made a similar EXP pedal mod but in another way: I put black tape on the LEDs/sensors surroundings to avoid reflections on the aluminum surfaces, and twisted both LEDs to the side, to decrease the amount of light that goes to the sensor. The result was awsome, but I noticed that the left pedal was getting a bit of the right LED luminosity, so I added a "wall" (also made of tape) to avoid that problem. Another thing I've made is to put a piece of tape on the black part of the plastic shaft, so the light wont go trouhg it anyway (just in case). Now both pedals go from 0 to 127 in all the range of motion!!!
Probably, an even better mod would be the adding of a LED trim potenciometer, so we could adjust the LED luminosity with a lot more ease... But since I have no eletronics skills, I prefered a more "physical" solution.
    Lesson learned: optical sensors SUCK!

I did the mod where you apply some shielding to the LED sensor for the foot pedals and it works MUCH better. It took about an hour to complete. I just grabbed a plastic bag from a loaf of bread that had white opaque on it. I cut a couple strips off, got some regular scotch tape, and some scissors. I just wrapped the plastic around a sensor a few times, wrapped some scotch tape around it to hold it in place, and that's it! Now the expression pedals will register movement as soon as I move instead of registering after 50% of the way through the movement. Thanks for the tip!

Outstanding. I have a rather dated TC Electronics G Major and I intended on bringing her back into the mix so to speak. The Behringer controller was going to be my choice. This type of interaction would make this a viable option. Thank you.

Thank you thank you!! The only mod I did was to wrap the plastic bag around the expression pedal sensor, and it works GREAT -- full range of motion. (BTW, I think the bag I used was a little too thin, I had to wrap it around 3 times, but it works great!) I had started looking for other pedals, but now I don't need to. Now if I can just make the pedal a little harder to move, I'll be set!

I really enjoy making modifications and improvements, but why do manufacturers frequently drop the Hardware/Software ball just short of the finish line? Very cool mods you made. I'm having an idea also to make some mods (well mostly 1: using an STM32 or Arduino instead of the current firmware). I'm wondering if it is 'easy' to read the pedal values, and same to read the switches (although I could possibly create some new kind of 'board' inside, or solder directly to the legs, leaving the current PCB unused).

    Hi Bob,
today I installed a expression pedal range mod. This is the only source with regard to that topic I found.
I used some old neutral filter foils from my cam equipment to limit the brightness detected by the sensor.
So, the CC value changes simultanously with the movement. But on pedal 1 I have at the end of the movement 5 mm dead space after reaching the 127.
Pedal 2 delivers exactly 0 to 127 from stop to stop. I calibrated them after the mod.
The strange thing is, during calibration you can notice that there are values detected on pedal 1 at the end of the movement , it changes the shown values.
    Is that a software problem?
Thanks for that video. Even after 6 years it was quite helpfull.

    Hello,
    Nice work/vídeo. Very usefull.
I was searching this type of modif to my FCB1010
I'm thinking about something similar, but:
I would like to use pins 1,5 to feed the FCB and to feed a wah pedal from ibanez (weapping daemon).
    But the Current is diferent:
    9v DC yo Ibanez
    9v/12v (i'm not sure) AC.
So the power must be rectified.
    I wonder:
¿Wich element I can put yo change de Current?
¿Is there any posibility, to feed the FCB in other point, where de Current needed is 12v DC? I mean, maybe the FCB has itself a rectifier in other point.
(I'm mechanical, not electrical...so I don't understand so deep this issues)
Best regards and thanks in advance !

One question, Can you tell me why the response of the expression pedal "A" doesn't feel good when I use the wha-wa (POD 2.0 line 6)??. It sounds like i have to move my foot too fast to make the wha sounds good. Do i make my self clear??

    • @AXXbob

Is not related to the mod, but to the way the SW adjusts the frequency of wha-wha. Try to change the response curve (see user's manual)

Thanks a lot for this very useful tutorial. I am quite satisfied with the EXPR pedals and switches. the problem is that I've tried to change the power supply system. it works as described the unit is on, but whit it comes annoying hiss and buzz that is translated to my signal chain via parallel DC power witch I also use to power other effects (overdrive compressor and so on), so I am not able to use ti. I have to carry the original long 230V cable.
There is also one unpleasant thing that happens sometimes - the display and all the led suddenly go red and the controller freezes. this happened trice and every time it needed reprogramming the unit with factory reset and load saved sysex. but today the unit went red and now i cant turn it on .. display stays blank no led reaction whatsoever.
well i hope it will turn out that we wil be able to fix this malfunction... all best M

Hi Bob Axx - This a great tutorial. I just ordered a used FCB1010 with the Uno firmware already installed and this has given me ideas of what to do with it before I put into use. I think I will implement the phantom power cable, expression pedal sensor and mini switch upgrade mods. I don't have it yet but am anxious to get to work on it. Here are items that I wanted to know while watching. Perhaps you can add them to the description for myself and others:
    - Manufacturer and part number for the replacement mini switches you used.
    - Where you sourced the Tbars and tubular metal (aluminum?) for the protection shaft. What were they called so we can search for them online?
    - If you could link a url to see the arduino code that would be interesting to see how you handled it. That part was not not boooring. :-) I don't think I will be doing that mod but have programmed arduinos in the past and it would help describe how the logic on the board/firmware is working. Thank You !

      - I have purchased them in Ebay, very easy to find, see images and find similar ones (ebay vendors change their ref continuously... :-/ )
      - Tbars and tubular (aluminium!) from a local "brico center",
      - Arduino code for you:

It's letting me receive patch dump from the FCB but not letting me export anything. I joined the group but I can't see anyway to get a activation code or even anywhere to enter one to enable me to get the board working.
There is a payment link on the Mac software D/L button but not the windows and all the forums are dead..
I'm Win10 64, i7 16gb Presonus Audiobox US 96 I'm just trying to get it to communicate with guitar rig 5 in stomp box mode.
All the manuals are overcomplicated and might as well be written in Latin, can anyone out there please help me?! thanks.
