Tesla Model 3 SR+ LFP Review 6 Months Later

  • We have had our Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus with LFP batteries for 6 months now. Since taking delivery, we have had a chance to get very familiar and comfortable with the car.
Of course, we have our 2021 Tesla Model Y that has been the kick off of our Tesla journey, but when it was time to add another car to the household, I wanted an affordable EV that had the best value.
Obviously we went with the Tesla Model 3 SR+, and there are many reasons why this decision made sense for us. I am going to cover the pros and cons over that 6 months and help you with your decision on if you should get a SR+ Tesla Model 3.
We originally ordered a White on Black Tesla Model 3 SR+ some time ago and after watching the delivery date continue to get pushed back, we started considering other options. Just then, Tesla announced that they would be making LFP Model 3's available through their existing inventory.
At first, there were just over 150 cars available in the U.S. But after just a short period of time, most of them had already been accounted for. We were lucky enough to get our hands on this Black on White Model 3 shortly after the announcement.
Since this car became available, Tesla has transitioned all SR Model 3's to LFP. The newer cars have a slightly larger battery pack, which yields an impressive 272 Miles of range. Given that this is in the LFP format, that means you can charge daily to 100% without fear of damaging the battery, giving you the full battery of usable energy.

I live in New Jersey I’ve had a SR+ Model 3 for 1 year now, it’s amazing I don’t know why people are complaining that the SR doesn’t have enough range, if you drive less then 100 miles a day and live in a house or in a city trust me it’s perfect, and for RWD it’s not a problem in the snow just be smart with it and don’t go driving 95mph in the snow with it and you’ll be perfectly fine it performs amazing for a RWD. Currently have 17k miles on mine and plan on driving to Florida next week. So trust me if you can afford a LR you will be fine, the car is really amazing.

Great review ! I’ve had my M3LR for one week and adore this car! I WILL NOT use autopilot or cruise control, because of the phantom breaking issue …. I've had my SR+ for about 2 years now and have no range anxiety. Here's some advantages of SR+ over long range: the car is lighter and you get significantly better mileage per KWH. I've had no problem in the snow or any weather. Wow does it charge fast. I love the car.

We took delivery of our 2023 LFP Model 3 on Dec 27. Fit and finish - perfect. Took first road trip last week, 440 miles round trip. LFP's charge VERY quickly at the Superchargers. A short 10 min stop on the way and 10 on the way back, got home with battery at 20%, actually realized we could have stopped more toward home, did not really need to charge so soon on the way back. Very convenient, and I'm really glad we decided on the LFP model.

I am SO glad you mentioned the problem with the Vision System using autopilot on 2-lane highways @ 13.31. I live in a more rural area and drive mostly 2-lane highways and my 2022 Model 3 will slam on the brakes if a semi is driving towards me (in their lane) while using autopilot OR cruise control. This could very likely get me rear-ended if the person behind me is not paying attention. This is a SERIOUS safety issue. I do not recall my previous 2019 Model 3 with the added radar system having nearly as many issues with this. I contacted the service center about it and their suggestion was to keep the car updated (because it is still "learning") and that I could turn off all drivers aids to stop it from happening - that is NOT ok.

I discovered (hard) phantom breaking on my MYLR earlier this week driving down I-5 in the evening when going around a gradual right turn with oncoming traffic, even though there was a concrete K-rail barrier between directions. I had Autosteer engaged. Hard braking from 80 to 65 before it would disengage and speed back up. Fortunately no one was behind me.

We purchased our SR+M3 w/ LFP batteries around the same time as you. And it was because of your video about the availability of the LFP batteries that I purchased it. So, thanks for that! I agree with your review as I have noticed most of the same things as you. My range has decreased to 245 miles. Not sure if this is because of the "colder" weather? (Can I even say that it is cold here in Fresno, CA?) I do get distortion with my stereo. I brought it to the service center and they said it is from the Bluetooth and internet connection. I don't think this is correct as I also have music played via a USB drive and there is still distortion. I had a broken flood lamp on delivery that has been replaced. I had a 5-year ceramic coating put on the paint and I tinted all of the windows except for the windshield. I have found the driver's seat to be somewhat uncomfortable. The car is pretty tight for a family of five. I wish the MY was more affordable. Overall, I am still very happy with the M3.

(Kidding/not kidding) You're in the snow and I'm in Southern California. I want to charge to 100% without worrying about it, and you owe it to your brakes? I don't know. I'm trying to think of a better advantage point for you :) I'm in the process of doing a full wrap, panel by panel. I'm doing some minor paint correction first. Light swirls came standard on mine. We have one scheduled to arrive in the April - May timeframe. But we are also looking at the Ionic 5 and Kia EV 6. The newer ones are even better with the bigger battery. With the heat pump and efficiency, I’m getting about 50 miles more per charge than my S 75D. In sub 10 degrees c weather here in the U.K. so far (was snowing yesterday) I’m getting about 250 miles of mixed driving.
Richard Symons channel tests shows now there is only 25 ish real world mile difference between the new standard RWD and the Long Range. Given the Long Range will degrade more over the years, in 5 years the standard RWD may actually do more miles.
Mine is a China car and it’s perfectly built. Panel gaps perfect. No squeaks or rattles at all which is a big improvement on the S albeit road noise is a bit more than the S.
The stereo actually sounds better than my S ‘premium’ system with sub woofer I think even if bass is slightly less. That was a surprise. The stereo in this sounds really good IMO.
There’s a good $10000 difference between the new RWD and the LR now in the U.K.- hard to justify now they increased the LFP battery size unless you want the fast acceleration.

Coming from a 2012 Nissan Leaf, this will definitely be a HUGE upgrade for me! I'm currently saving up for a down payment and although some people will be like "gas cars have better range" or "too expensive," or would tell you to get another, cheaper electric car, I place value in Tesla a lot.
You get to access their vast Supercharger networks which can charge vehicles in less than 30 minutes to 80%. As a Leaf owner who constantly has to stop for chargers, they are either too far from my destination or they are occupied ALL the time which I encounter very frequently. This will be awesome for me since my car only takes J1772 at 240 volts (30 minutes = 5 miles of range). Making matters worse, my Leaf is second hand, so the previous owner probably thrashed it to the point where I have 7/12 bars at 38K miles and only have 40-50 miles of range vs. the 98 miles it originally came with. It could also be simple battery degradation, but keep in mind that Leafs are ONLY air-cooled batteries. Even the modern ones.
I also prefer cheaper maintenance in the long run compared to gas cars which have many moving parts. Though range will be quite controversial, I overall would pay for cheaper charging than $60 dollars every week for gas for my commutes and road trips. And definitely gotta love that instant torque.
Addressing my last point of Teslas being "too expensive," you're right. They are definitely expensive and will keep going up in value. However, you will have access to ever expanding Superchargers everywhere, a unique look that is distinguished from any other EV out there, the outstanding safety features, and most definitely the brand and what you value in a car.
If you don't really care for the brand, but prefer the best value for an EV, look at Chevy Bolts, Nissan Leafs, Hyundai Ioniq's, which are absolutely awesome cars too... But if you're looking for something simple, yet very packed with futureproof technology and arguably one of the best cars rated for safety, go with Tesla.

I went to a Tesla Showroom, opened a Model 3 door and started to enter. And, as I got about half way down into the car, I stopped and said “Oh no, no, no”. It wasn’t that I couldn’t get in to that gravity well, it was that I didn’t relish the idea of getting OUT. I am older, and not overweight, but I could not imagine hauling myself up out of that low sitting seat, over and over and over, for the NEXT 10 years. I know where I was 10 years ago, and where I am right now, but unless I start doing some serious core work and squat lifting, I’m not going to be able to get out of that car 10 years from now. This is why you do not order a car from a web page sight unseen.

Yea no shame in it. It’s something that I’ve seen at supercharger and no one talks about it

Haha. I'm 69 and decided not to get a Lotus Elise for that reason. I drove a 3 and I had to duck my head to get into the driver seat, so I need the Y or a used S or X.

@Lucid F8 I recently sold my 2000 BMW M Coupe (low sports car seats). I never had any trouble getting into or out of it. Last week I test drove a Model 3. No problem there either. I'm 84 and overweight. I like a low seating position--more sporty. I hate SUVs. No, I'm not a super athlete and I have bilateral knee replacement.

Sounds like this is the perfect commuter car with home charging and not the BEST road trip option?

Yes to first point, maybe not so bad on the second. I drove it down to Florida and it wasn’t that much more time honestly

Imagine the Total Cost of Ownership comparisons if the increased/increasing gas prices continue for a long time?!!

80% of a LR is is 286 miles…. versus 272 miles of RW at 100%. Keep your money IMO. $6k for speakers, ~10 miles, and AWD? I’m good.

Ha. It’s also a much roomier car though, and AWD. But you are right on a day to day driving, it’s very comparable
