Tesla Model 3 SR Road Trip 1k Miles to Tampa

  • When we bought our beloved Tesla Model 3, we went with the Standard Range variant because the intent was for this car to be used locally. At a significant savings over the Long Range, you sacrifice total range, but you get a lot of car for the money.
    Now that we are indeed moving to Florida, we need to start getting our cars down to Florida. First up is our SR Model 3. This is the first road trip I have taken in a Model 3 of any variant, and the first road trip in a standard range car.
    On this 1 way trip, we traveled just over 1,000 miles, and I had a great experience. I was weary of the extra travel time due to limited range and longer charging stops. That said, this trip was surprisingly good.
    Yes, it did take longer to get the SR Model 3 down to Florida than it takes us in our LR Model Y. But, it wasn't all bad on the overall experience.
    Other than the obvious size difference from our Tesla Model Y, this Model 3 was smoother on the road, quieter, and overall more efficient. I wasn't surprised about the efficiency, but I was surprised to discover the ride was that much better and quieter.
    Now that said, we do have the aero wheels, which are quieter and do provide a smoother ride, but there is something else about this car that makes it a softer ride. I believe the suspension on this car is better handling the weight of the Model 3 than the suspension on the Model Y.

      the issue (as a Tesla owner) isn't the difference between the LR and SR+. The issue is the difference between ICE and EV for total time spent. The SR+ is an extra hour but the LR vs. ICE is more than that.

    Thanks for the most enjoyable ride and the excellent analysis at the end. Still happy to have gone for the new model 3 RWD in the uk, not so many really long journeys, smaller roads and parking spaces and I, personally, have no need for a lot of extra room. I also think that the extra range of the 60kWh battery that the LFP comes with plus the efficiency should help in my circumstances. Great that we have the choice and the difference on price between the Model 3 RWD and the Y long range here is around $11,000, that might buy a set of all weather mats if inflation calms down 😉

Looking forward to taking the Model 3 on a 4000 mi. road trip very soon because it does seem quieter and has a smoother and more comfortable suspension. Very noticeable difference. great video as usual. I have a late 2021 MYP and as everyone in tesla land knows that all the tires that are being put on their vehicles are stretched, that is why the rims are outside the tire line, hence curb rashes. I changed my tires from pirelli's summer tires to Michelin pilots all season tires. I also changed my tire size to 275/35/21 in the front and 295/35/21 in the back. now the rims are protected, I feel more of the road and the ride is much softer. I didn't notice any significant losses in range. Try going to atleast 265's on your car as a video. keep up the great videos

    We have a MYLR (on Inductions) and a M3P (on Uberturbines), and I honestly think the ride on the M3P is smoother and quieter than the MYLR. The M3P was purchased after the MYLR and I was expecting a harsher ride on the M3P bc of the Uberturbines - I am shocked by how well the M3P rides. To your point, I 100% agree that the smoother ride on the 3 is more than just the wheels/tires - in fact with me comparing using Uberturbines, i can guarantee that's the case. I bet M3 ride on the aero's is butter smooth...
    Keep doing your thing, BTG - love the content!

    I have a LR Model 3 and a LR Model Y. Got the 3 on Valentines Day, the Y on 31 March. I think the Model Y is a smoother ride, but the 3 is more fun to drive. The 3 is more efficient. I love both cars, but the 3 is more of a sports car. After a week, the wife chose to use the Model 3. So I'm pretty much restricted to the Y. We haven't done a road trip. All our charging has been done at home. Our electric plan is a standard rate of $0.1177. A little < 12 cents per KWH 24-7. At home our charging is easy to plan since we have a flat rate. Installing solar in Sep/Oct. Will decide on battery storage options in next few months so we basically go off grid and maybe sell some electric back to the grid. I think we will be limited to 25% of our average electric usage for sale back to the grid. BS but what can I do? Love most of your videos. From me, that's a great review. RRG

    I will be getting a MY in November, one of my routes is in a charging desert. There are chargers before the long stretch. I will have a charger at my destination. Will the Tesla supercharger allow me to "top off" my charge if I am at 60% charge already. I may need a little more juice to safely make it to my destination, especially if it is winter in Northern MN. My friend says that the supercharger won't let you charge. He has owned a MY for a month, so I yield to your expertise.

    • @BeardedTeslaGuy
      @BeardedTeslaGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      of course you can "top off" your charge at the supercharger. It does not matter what your state of charge is, you can plug in anytime.

  • @jeffreyblanton9877
    @jeffreyblanton9877 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    To bad the charge stations aren’t at rest stops. What happens if you get stuck with a wreck in front snd you have to run the heat or AC for 30 minutes or so while you wait to get through it. I’m considering buying a model y but I have concerns about taking it on s trip like this. I see that you are stopping with 10% battery at times. That doesn’t leave a lot of room for error.

    • @BeardedTeslaGuy
      @BeardedTeslaGuy  ปีที่แล้ว

      It uses way less energy than a gas car when sitting idle like that. In camp mode at about freezing temp, it uses less than 1%/hr. In warm weather with A/C it uses about 1.5%/hr

      @jeffreyblanton9877 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BeardedTeslaGuy that’s good to know. I’m considering the model Y because of the new lower price a tax incentive but I think the better move is to wait until everyone takes the deal and buy a used one. This will put a lot of pressure on used market to come in lower than a new one minus the tax break. I think buy this spring you will able to pick up a 2022 model Y for under $45k easy.

      Yes, the slower you drive, the less energy you consume. The real question is if the charging savings of a 30 minute charge offset 1,000 miles at 65 vs 80

    • @benadebayo6088
      @benadebayo6088 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, you might skip some charging if you drove slower but overall might lose time. For such a long trip, if you drove at 80 mph you may get there 2 hours earlier than if you drove at 60 or 65 mph. But you might only save two charges (Approximately one hour) so, you are still probably better off driving at the faster speed.

    • @epowerbyfrank8901
      @epowerbyfrank8901 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting discussion. I sold my SR+ after 2 years, ordered a MYLR supposedly coming in July. I always found I was better off on trips driving 65 MPH on freeways. I’d estimate a min. 10% range increase compared to driving 75-80. If fighting a headwind, even more of a difference. Also, I always treat the windshield with RainX before a trip so wipers are (rarely) needed. Maybe saves another 2% compared to driving with wipers on, but it all adds up. Thanks for all the info, nice video, appreciate it.

    Question, when the charger was full and you were waiting in line….how long was the wait to get to the charger and then the total time at the charger? Seems like that will become the norm. Now that Tesla will open up their chargers to other vehicles….you know good and well that all other vehicles will skip the unreliable EA stations like the plague so I foresee charging stations being full way to often and will make traveling on road trips more a burden than a benefit. But you get free miles so it’s not a big deal for you.

The SR+ is more efficient than the MY so in the end I don’t think the stops would make that much of a difference if you’d have driven the MY in the same conditions. You had 4 stops day one, 4 stops day 2, I imagine about 10 mins difference per stop.

    Have you put any thought into whether a Tesla/CCS1 adapter would be worthwhile for any of your roadtrips? Just curious, if it would affect your charging location decisions, ie if there were better restroom/amenity/etc options, or 350kw CCS locations vs v2 supercharger locations, etc.

      Imo, a CCS adapter is only in the equation if you’re trying to reach the very rare destination that doesn’t have a supercharger nearby + have no way to charge at your destination. For example, I’m going to glacier national park, but there’s not a supercharger near the park. If I didn’t stay at a campground with charging, I would need the css or Chademo adapter so I could use the DCFC in whitefish when needed. If we get to the point where L2 charging is at most all destinations, DCFC becomes less and less important. CCS is still not as convenient or reliable as the supercharger network. It’s the little things like pulling into a supercharger and having it work instantly, vs having to get out, opening the necessary app, authorizing payment, connecting the charger, and hoping that it works first try. Even me with my limited css experience, I’ve ran into an issue where the charger didn’t want to work since I attached the adapter before it wanted me to. Those 5ish minutes of hassle that you can run into adds up over time, especially if your charging stop is only 10-15 minutes. The only other reason I could see for wanting to use css is if there’s a free charger in the area, or lower charging fees. Teslas at this point won’t be able to charge at the 350kw rate(almost no vehicles can do so even if they are “rated” for it) since these chargers run on higher voltages that teslas can’t support. The official Tesla adapter, that isn’t in the us yet, is rated for 150kw, but some people have pulled 200kw with it.

    I disagree on buy as much range as you can afford. I say buy what you want to drive 99% of time. I would rather have the performance model and add a little charging on the occasional road trip, as it’s never an issue day to day.

      No I don’t disagree with you but you are talking about a performance model, which is a different focus. I refer to people getting less range for cost. Get as much range as you can afford. If you want top speed, then it doesn’t matter what the range is. That’s different all together and does not apply
