    Demolisher crashing out of the arena during its intro is one of the funniest Robot Wars moments ever.

    They keep mentioning Oliver Steeples as a Star Wars fan and now 20 years later, he's working as a prop designer for the new Star Wars movies. Awesome.

    Whenever I see people complaining about Jeremy Clarkson on Robot Wars, it's because of what he said about Prince of Darkness. I don't think that was a problem; the Prince of Darkness team were well aware that their robot was quite visually unappealing, and Philippa Forrester mocked it as well. Krayzee Tokyo was the one that got the real harsh insults. The team was only a group of three schoolkids!

    Oliver Steeples (mentioned here as a massive George Lucas fan) is now working in the props department of the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

    Damn, that little demolisher is surprisingly manuverable. And with so much speed... despite having so little mass, those spikes might still do something. I hope they make it to the arena!

    Bugs is one of my relative's robot who unfortunatley had to be replaced by Stephen Devereau because he was with someone else on a special day out so he couldn't make it into the recording.

    @Psycho18C The chainsaw.
    It caused numerous failures for Matilda throughout the early series. Later on they replaced it with a circular saw, and surprise surprise, Matilda stopped going up in smoke. I can only assume the fuel for the chainsaw leaked, or the chain came a bit loose and tore up something inside. Either way, it became a clear message to everyone: using a chainsaw in a robot is a very, very bad idea.

    There must have been some serious editing because The Demolisher looked to be way quicker than Cunning Plan.

  • @retardskull

    The intros are a little comical. Demolisher goes through the bars, and if you look, it looks like Bugs gets stuck on the grill.

    The lightweight episode of Robot Wars series 1 is one of the few episodes I remember a lot! Only occasion such thing was a heat in the UK championships. Cunning Plan was beautifully designed, brilliant to hear Oliver is living the dream working for the new Star Wars movies as part of the props department. Sat 'Arn was underrated, The Demolisher is tiny but fast and Krazee Tokyo was a joke entry! Least the schoolboys had a laugh xD

    ...seriously, what the HELL is the point of having a featherweight episode...? With brilliant ideas like this, it's incredible they even managed to get a 2nd series.
    Mind you, watching the Demolisher zoom into the arena, swerve off to the side and dive under the side bar and off the stage was hilarious.
    God Jeremy Clarkson is a prick, isn't he? Sooner they bring on Craig Charles the better.
    ...wait, how the hell was the Demolisher not as fast as Sat'Arn or Cunning Plan? They basically just drove straight through without stopping. Was there something we didn't get to see?

    • @killdozer7792
      @killdozer7792 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ArcaneAzmadi Clarkson mentions later in the episode that it overturned in the Gauntlet, even though we clearly don't see that happen. I'm guessing it was edited out and that's why Demolisher finished slower than it appeared.
      Also, the featherweight class has continued competing for years afterwards, and is still going strong today - really, in the UK, robots are only ever heavyweights or featherweights - so don't sneer.

    • @ArcaneAzmadi
      @ArcaneAzmadi 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kill Dozer Yeah, but in this series the featherweights were being set up to compete against the heavyweights (and the middleweight episode winner) in the final. That's why we got the splendid sight of featherweight heat winner Cunning Plan charging at T.R.A.C.I.E, getting stuck underneath it, and immobilising both bots because T.R.AC.I.E's wheels were being held off the ground and it was too heavy for Cunning Plan to move.
      I don't have anything against featherweights, but their implementation in this series was nonsensical.

    • @killdozer7792
      @killdozer7792 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ArcaneAzmadi And, as I said, they probably didn't really have a choice in the matter. It was only the first series, and they didn't even have enough legitimate robots to make it work out. They had to work with whatever they had.

    • @ArcaneAzmadi
      @ArcaneAzmadi 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kill Dozer Hmm, didn't consider that. I guess when a whole bunch of people turned up for auditions with "robots" that were little more than remote controlled cars they had to say "hmm, what can we do with this...?"

    Yep, rumour has it Demolisher was flipped at one point in the gauntlet, but that was edited out for the TV broadcast. Looks to me like there's a break at 8:58 where it crashes into Matilda. Robot Wars was pretty heavily edited for TV throughout its existence.

      Demolisher actually did take longer to finish the gauntlet - for some reason they edited it to make it look like it got through without any difficulty.

    correct me if i'm wrong, but wouldn't the flamethrower be completely useless? unless of course you were interested in the aesthetics...

    • @ricksanchez8081

      true but some robots have more weak armor and the stuff inside is sometimes more open

    • @Toylore
      @Toylore 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A lot of components would melt very easily. Of course, that flame thrower isn't going to be melting much. It's purely for aesthetics at this point.

    • @OZ06MSLeoAC193
      @OZ06MSLeoAC193 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The flame thrower causes very little to no damage to most robots it's mainly for the entertainment value. Setting flammable robots on fire is extremely entertaining for the audience in series 5 heat H there was a robot called Granny's Revenge that was up against axe awe that ended up being set on fire by Sgt bash. It was my favourite sgt bash moment and the audience and Jonathan Pearce really loved it.
