Saving £2,200 On Car Insurance - Make Sure To Do This
Saving £2,200 On Car Insurance - Make Sure To Do This
We recently had a potential costly situation with our car insurance which we managed to avoid and save a lot of money. In this video I share that story.
We used to be a one car household which required just one lot of car insurance. However, I am now living unaccompanied during the week and I am also soon to be posted on promotion. My wife will keep her job and commute when she needs to. Both of these factors led us to pulling the pin and buying a second car. But another car, means more car insurance.
Watch this video to see how we saved £2,200 and learn from the mistakes I made during this process.
What are some of your own car insurance stories? Leave a comment below.

Have just finished phase 1 (started 17 March) being paid the current circa £18,000 salary - was my understanding correct from this video that the amount is increasing to NLW and that for new recruits pay would be backdated from April then our anything calculated above the award would be paid to us in July?

    • @thesavvysquaddie
      @thesavvysquaddie 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      When you log onto JPA then; 1. Click on the drop down menu revealing all the self service options. 2. Click on the drop down of 'My Dashboards' and click the option. 3. Once the new page loads, click 'Navy', even if you are Army. Unfortunately the Army landing page doesn't have the option but it still works going through 'Navy'. The RAF landing page does have the option. 4. Then click the option under the 'Personnel' heading. This will allow you to check your personal info. 5. On this new page, there are three options along the top left, click the middle one, 'Personal Profile'. 6. On the right hand side of this page, as you scroll down, you will see a number of options with drop down menus. There is one labelled, 'Pay Costs' 7. Click that drop down menu and scroll down to the bottom of what it revealed and there is where you will find the 'Pension Contribution' for that month. Hopefully that does the job for you.

Eg you couldn't just promote to WO1 then sign off and expect a WO1 pension, what's the minimum qualifying period? 2 years? Anyways keep up the excellent work and treat yourself to a 'star menu' meal on me 💪🏻

      Many thanks for the donation and support. Genuinely means a lot. As for your questions, I've taken this from JSP854 which is the one on the AFPS75. But the short answer is, 2 years within rank. Section 2.12 - Pension Rank and Rank Addition for Other Ranks 2.12.1. Pension Rank. The pension rank for an Other Rank member is the highest paid rank that they held for at least two years or an aggregate of two years during their last five years of reckonable service.

      So, AFPS05 is calculated using the final salary. What they define as final salary is the best 365 day paid period over your final 3 years. With the AFPS75, this uses final rank. Usually, the rank held for the final 2 years. But here is the extract from JSP854 to help clarify with AFPS75 final rank aspect. Section 2.12 - Pension Rank and Rank Addition for Other Ranks 2.12.1. Pension Rank. The pension rank for an Other Rank member is the highest paid rank that they held for at least two years or an aggregate of two years during their last five years of reckonable service.

    If you do not trigger the EDP 18/40. Do you have to serve till 40 till you can receive an immediate monthly payment/lump sum or do you just not receive anything till age 55? Also if you joined at 16 is that classed as non-rec service?

    • @thesavvysquaddie
      @thesavvysquaddie 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      If you do not serve until the relevant EDP point but have served at least 12 years, then you will receive the resettlement grant which is around £12k tax-free. If you leave before 12 years of service, you don't receive this. Otherwise you will have to wait until when the pension becomes payable to claim it. With regards to the non-rek service, this will depend on your age when joining. See below from Regs, mainly para C, if you joined on or after Jan 2008. Reckonable Service 9.108. Definition - Relevant Date. The relevant date from which a soldier's service, on a current engagement, is to be reckoned, is as follows: a. In the case of men, the relevant date is: (1) For those enlisted before 1 January 1962, the date of attestation. (2) For those enlisted on or after 1 January 1962 until 31 December 2007, the date of attaining the age of 18 years or date of attestation, whichever is the later. b. In the case of women, the relevant date is: (1) For those enlisted after 1 January 1962 and before 1 August 1967, the date of attaining the age of 18 years or the date of attestation whichever is the later. (2) For those enlisted on or after 1 August 1967 and before 1 April 1975, the date of attestation. (3) For those enlisted on or after 1 April 1975 until 31 December 2007, the date of attaining the age of 18 years or the date of attestation, whichever is the later. c. The relevant date for all those enlisting on or after 1 January 2008 is the date of attestation.

      @@thesavvysquaddie Also, does joining at 16 (Harrogate for example for 2 years) count towards my pensionable service?

    • @thesavvysquaddie
      @thesavvysquaddie 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      If you left at that point, you would receive the Resettlement Grant of around £12k tax free lump sum. This is separate from the EDP. If you left then you would not receive any monthly income or tax-free lump sum from the EDP. To receive EDP in your case, you would have to serve until you are 40. You would also have met the 20/40 EDP point on the 15 scheme as well. So you would receive EDP tax free lump sum and monthly income from both the 05 and 15 schemes if you serve until 40. If you receive the EDP then you will not get the Resettlement Grant. As for Harrogate, it depends on when you joined and what scheme you are on. If on the 75 scheme then qualifying service starts from the age of 18. Qualifying service is paid service and is what counts towards the pension. On the 05 and 15, it should be counted from day one, week one.

    This is an interesting case and it appears to be based on the provisions of Equality Act 2010. In respect to the marriage/civil partnership element, I am not sure that there is a legal claim here (aside from a moral claim). The Act makes it unlawful to discriminate against someone who is either married or a civil partner (Section 13(4)). It does not appear to extend the same protection to someone who is ‘single’ (ie neither married nor a civil partner). The element on age discrimination is a different element and one that applies only to the Army with their Over 37 package. Whilst age is a protected characteristic and discrimination is generally unlawful, there are a couple of provisions that could affect the case. The Act does permit different treatment based on age if it can be shown that it is ‘a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim’. Section 4 of Schedule 3 of the Act gives an exemption for age (and disability, gender reassignment, and sex) discrimination for ‘anything done for the purpose of ensuring the combat effectiveness of the armed forces.’ So it is not a blanket exemption. So in defending a claim based on age against the Over 37 package, the MOD/Army would need to persuade that court that it was either to achieve a ‘legitimate aim’ and or that it directly ensured the combat effectiveness of the Army (though not, it would appear, the RN, RM, or RAF). That case could be weakened given that the age limit for the Army has been removed in the new provisions. I was always concerned about the approach taken by the Army with the Over 37 package. I have observed it being explained that the Army was rewarding longer service by providing the package. But in reality, they were preventing their soldiers from having something that their colleagues in the other services received much earlier in their careers.

    I’m really shocked at how low the wages are in the army for people who put their lives at risk.

    I have to wear civilian clothing for my 2 year assignment and receive the grant however as it’s taxed at 40% I basically have to have a complete civilian work wardrobe for £480 for the whole assignment. I couldn’t even cloth myself in Primark for 2 years on £480

    Thanks for the video. I am an officer and consider myself relatively well squared away for AFPS pension, mortgage, income etc and am married with two kids, wife working also. The one thing that this has convinced me of is that I am not making enough (safe) investment into long term ISAs and should be making hay while the sun shines. More power to your elbow mate.

    Just say I’ve signed off at 11 years and 300 days but leave service after 12 years. Will I still be entitled to the resettlement grant? Being told a mixed bag…

    I requested mine to check how my own spreadsheet calculations looked based on getting my military pension at age 60. Surprisingly, after 30 years, I was only about 10% out, and would actually receive more than my calculations.

    First of all Pensions for soldiers are not a “benefit” they are an entitlement! Secondly the new system is specifically built to take advantage of soldiers not making old bones. Those that do under the scheme I belong to is known as the Queens/Kings bad bet. I am now in my 70th year and enjoy index linked payments on my service, war, and incremental pensions. The New scheme is not as good as it’s made out to be!!!

    I did 25 years and was proud of it. Right up until we started getting senior MPs who did little more than go to university to learn how to become a politician with no understanding of what it means to work. Now I have actively discouraged everyone of military age if they indicate that they want to join up. This shit hole is not worthy of the Army I was in and most likely would be split because most of the illegals would run as would all the Alphabets (LGBTQRVITV) and you would probaBLY END UP IN PRISON FOR DOING YOUR JOB

    Comparative to other workplace pensions today, AFPS 15 and also AFPS05/15 are still a good deal. They're just *not as good* of a deal in some ways as AFPS75 or AFPS75/15, because of how the benefits are accrued over time and when they apply due to the increased retirement age. This has to do with increased life expectancy and how long it takes to reach salary average "plateaus". Essentially, the later you get your money, and the less you can claim if leaving earlier, the more money the pensions pot can save to the taxpayer over time. Early leavers, less being drawn and comparatively early deaths in a physically active subsector of the British population = "kaching" for the treasury. 4:22 is the slide that tells the whole story. £4Bn on pensions alone is what this all about. Example - my calculation shows if I go outside after 20/40 EDP point and electing for AFPS15, I get less lump and less EDP, until SPA when the amount jumps up 2 grand more than if I elect for AFPS 75, which is more lump sum and more EDP, right away but less money at SPA. My point being, I might not even make it to 68, so I may as well take the money now while I can bloody use it! And I am old btw and and an officer. BZ for the brief though.

    How long does it generally take to get the forecast back via the post?

      I can't accurately comment on that as I went the digital route. But I can't imagine it would take more than 10 working days to get back to you.

    For life of me can’t get this calculator working as it keeps kicking me back to terms conditions page could you help me and run some numbers for me I got family member who is 66 but thought he wasn’t eligible for army pension as he only did 4 year service he joined in 1976 finished up in 1980 he should have been receiving pension 6 year ago if he was eligible, he still working a job just now but thinks he may need to work few more years past age 67 to have enough to get bye. But if he’s eligible for army pension he could probably happily retire just any help would be appreciated thanks again

      Thanks for the comment. From my understanding, his initial understanding was correct. Unfortunately, he is not eligible for a pension under the AFPS75. Here is an extract from the AFPS75 Explained booklet which can be found on the Gov website. (assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/911030/FINAL_DRAFT_-_AFPS_75_Your_Scheme_Explained.pdf) "Note: The minimum qualifying period of 2 years’ Service applies if you were in AFPS 75 on or after 6th April 1988. If you left Service before 6th April 1988, then you need to have completed 5 years of reckonable service (the actual years and days that count towards your pension). If you left between April 1975 and 1978, then you need to have reached age 26 and completed 5 years of reckonable service. " As he left the service before 6th April 1988 and served for 4 years, he has not met the 5 year eligibility criteria for an AFPS75 pension.

    Not necessarily related but do you happen to know the DIO policy on house size you are entitled to? For example I’ve heard rumours that if both partners are serving and have a child you are entitled to a 3 bed house due to the amount of issued kit etc you get and not wanting your newborn to be top flapped in your Bergen to sleep 😂 but if just one is serving then you only get a 2 bed. Is that duff gen or actual gen?

    • @thesavvysquaddie
      @thesavvysquaddie 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for the comment. At the moment, if you are an OR, your entitlement would be a 2 bed house if you have 1 child. If there is surplus, you can apply for a 3 bed and might get it, but there is no guarantee. I have not seen anything to suggest that the house would be bigger if both people are serving. That's not to say it doesn't exist, I'm just not aware of it. Things might change once the review for the Modernised Accommodation Offer has been completed.

    The reason of paying for insurance isn’t valid in my opinion, as my house and content insurance I pay for each month covers my house hold items whether if they are in or out if storage, the price doesn’t increase or didn’t for me when I was listed to Cyprus.

    Hi... let's say my pension right now is £9000. I took full lump sum when I left. Could you tell me, roughly how much I will be on once I'm 55?? Or could you tell me where to go to work it out. Thank you

      You should be able to get Maths and English Level 2 for free through the military as it is a requirement to promote to certain senior ranks.
