  • Why Is Day Subsistence only £25? - Policy Podcast Episode 2
I recently had the chance to sit down with the policy leads of pay, pension and allowances. We chatted about many things to do with each of those topics and they answered a number of questions that had been submitted by the audience.
They dispel myths, explain the reasons why and add important context to many issues that surround pay, pensions and allowances.
In this second episode, both Will and Ian talk about the Longer Separation Allowance (LSA), Get You Home (GYH), Home To Duty (HDT), Operational Local Overseas Allowances (Op LOA) and the £25 Day Subsistence (DS).
This is our first time trying anything like this, so please do leave your feedback in the comments below and any further suggestions or questions you might have that we can answer in the next episode.

We suffer the same on OP Kipion. No LOA and only LSA, long periods of time away and no recognition. But of your onboard one of the ships you qualify for LOA even though they have access to the same facilities in the base as them.

Problem is with Cabrit is that you look left and right and every other nation is rewarded for the time they spend away, the French are on double their wage and they do less time and we are in a turmoil regarding recruitment and retention and CABRIT is here for the future with the added churn that's going to entail.

I was robbed of my cabrit tour LOA, they scrapped “the 60p a day” because you “ can order everything on the internet “ … never mind the fact it took 8 weeks for anything to by post in theatre. I explained this to my French contemporary’s and they burst out laughing

They know Cabrit is shit, they've asked themselves that question. Still nothing is given to the lads. Chin the "welfare package off" give the lads the same level of LOA as temp staff in Germany, sounds like they want to drag out the answer so they can end up giving LOA, 3/4 years down the line instead of paying it out now. We've all sat there talking to the Danes and the French and they are getting squared away. We all know it's easier and better to go sit in Germany or Batus, they are just not pulling there finger out because it saves them money. The standard reason.

@8:54 If you cant spend a MINIMUM of 24hrs at home or in camp you are entilted to LSA. Dont let them rob your LSA days boys and girls

Probably £9-£10 for 3 core meals a day… is the guy on crack? I get having to justify an expense but come on know the actual figures rather than a massive guess to make it seem more appealing than it actually is. Your two episodes have been great so far, it’s just a shame that the mpa’s at unit level are more of a hurdle than an enabler (buzz word of the pod cast) of these allowances. I see daily battles with low level mpa’s from soldiers in all cohorts to get allowances of all kinds, only for it to need to be escalated up the chain for the correct decision that should have been swiftly dealt with by the professional’s.

Definitely an Army issue. I'm RAF and have done many deployments with the Army I find the SPS clerks are generally so resistant to giving anyone the allowances they are entitled to. Stand firm, understood the policy and push for what you deserve.

My previous post was great for allowances. Very accommodating and helpful. Where I am now is very different. I have yet to put in a claim, as there has been no need, but my peers have had issue after issue with very valid claims and certainly what seems like unnecessary bureaucracy. I've worked with a Navy for a bit and they seemed to be all over it.

The blokes answer on day subsistence is pathetic.
The haythornthwaite review revealed that the spending on day subsistence equates to less than one percent of the MODs budget. The way it has been frozen for so long and not to mention is audited in such a ridiculous manner is draconian. The army treats the provision of allowances to its people as though it is in spite of the JSP that mandates it to (and even that is a beurocratic mess)
