  • Service Day’s Pay Giving - Where Does The Money Go?
Many of us might see a deduction labelled, ‘Service Day’s Pay Giving’ in our monthly payslip. But do you actually know what it means? Do you know where that money goes? Do you even benefit from it? In this video, I am to answer all of these questions and more.
Service Day’s Pay Giving or Day’s Pay Scheme as it is also known as, is a payroll giving scheme whereby you donate a portion of your pay, before tax, to your relevant Regimental/Corps Association.
The amount you donate varies depending on the unit and your rank. For most junior soldiers it is around 120% of a day’s pay. This is then divided into 12 equal amounts for each month. Seniors and Officers tend to pay a bit more.
Because education of the scheme is practically non-existent, many people don’t really know where that money goes. They just assume it pays for the stable belt and some other bits and bobs. But it does so much more and helps thousands of people every year.
Using the Royal Logistic Corps (RLC) as an example, donations go towards The Benevolent Grant Scheme, The Medical Discharge Grant Scheme, The Off Duty Accident, Death or Injury Grant Scheme, Sports, Adventure Training and Battlefield Studies, The Sustainer Magazine, The Corps of Drums, The RLC Museum and Esprit de Corp.
Everyone in the RLC benefits in some way shape or form from this. Some more than others if they have unfortunately fell on hard times. And this will be the same for all the other Regimental/Corps Associations as well.
Sadly, there is a negative stigma that surrounds this scheme due to the poor way in which it has been implemented, communicated and educated. Many people resent paying for it because they were coerced into doing it through threat of seeing the Regimental Sergeant Major. That was certainly the case for me.
This video aims to change that perspective and actually sell people on the benefit of it so they donate willingly.
However, if after watching this video you would still like to cancel your subscription, then speak to your HR and fill out form JPA E014. But I do hope you reconsider. You may one day rely on this scheme.

Outstanding explanation of a previously guarded topic - now I understand it, paid in for 14 years and unbeknown to me benefited from it in service, and in my current occupation supporting Veterans I see the massive benevolent supportive impact of the scheme for ex-Military after service as one day who knows, any former service person may need that financial support. Well done again Savvy Squaddie

My unit, we aren’t going to target those that don’t pay it but we will publish a full list of those that do

A bit unnecessary really to publish any names in relation to who does or does not pay it.

@@thesavvysquaddie it is but was done to show who paid and those that didn’t as stated in your video had to write a letter to the CO on why they didn’t pay, to me as it’s raising monies for registered charities surely that would land regimental charities in a bit of bother with the charity commission.

The regimental charities may not even be aware it's ongoing or perhaps looking the other way. Willful ignorance. It's a wrong and outdated practice and it's exactly that sort of thing that causes people to has a distaste and distrust in these schemes.
What people need to do is to refuse to write these letters or go to these meetings. They need to keep note and get things in writing just incase their lives get a bit harder. Grounds for complaints then.
These poor practices will only stop once these higher ups are held to account for enforcing them and letting them happen.
The Days Pay Scheme is great and does amazing things but its benefits are soured by uniformed CoCs who think they can enforce charitable donations. A lack of confidence, knowledge, integrity and courage amongst some of these leaders has caused this.

Armoured Corps. If you're interested, I did an episode on the Center of Army Leadership podcast where I talk a bit more about who I am, what I do etc.
