I've laid my Glock 17 to rest (for now) and replaced it with another full-size pistol - the Sig Sauer M17. Should You Build or Buy Your Next AR-15?

You can choose to either build or buy your next AR-15. Both are very popular and while there isn't a "right" option, there are some things to consider when deciding. I'm using my Bravo Company USA M16A4-inspired clone to illustrate my points. It has performed well after 5,000 rounds of both brass and steel cased 5.56mm NATO. This rifle is an "inspired" clone, meaning doesn't have any Colt or FN...

    They won't let you drive down to the end of the bay to check your targets? So do they make you call a cold range(if others are present) every time someone needs to walk down to check their targets? That'd really piss me off if that was the case at my range. My range obviously requires a cold range but they let us drive down there. Also, to use the 500m at my range they have a piece of steel at 200(just an ordinary steel gong) and all you have to do is ring that steel twice. The requirement to have a 2" group at 200 is actually pretty restrictive. That means you have to have a rifle that is capable of 1moa accuracy AND a shooter that is capable of 1moa. There are a LOT of rifles on the market that are sold as high end rifles that will struggle to obtain that kind of accuracy consistently despite manufacturers claiming every damn rifle on the market is "SUB MOA WITH 77GR!!!1". Granted, it's only a 5 shot group so that's pretty easy to "cheat" or even just get lucky. I'm curious, do they even really enforce it? Or could you just take them a target and say "here ya go, 2" at 200 with 5 shots!" Cuz I mean otherwise the challenge isn't 2" with 5 shots at 200, it's 2" with 5 shots *on demand* under supervision from an RO. That's different, ya know? I like my gun club's method. It verifies your optic is zeroed and then the rest is on you. There is typically an RO on the 500m so if you're mag dumping and missing left and right even though you hit twice on the 200m steel they can still tell you to stop but they'll let any member become an R.O if they take the class. Last thing I'll say--200 really shouldn't require any holds for most zeroes. Should be basically a dead on hold.

    • @jamesshoots
      @jamesshoots 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Haha tbh I just don’t drive all the way down there because I’m too lazy to start my car up each time. Parking where I do at the range also tells others that the bay is occupied so it avoids me having to constantly tell people I’m using it lol Ahh I see about the groups! Well, I’ll do what I can lol. They make you actually shoot on demand vs bring a target they haven’t seen you shoot. I like your range’s method more lol

      @@jamesshoots RC2 is a solid choice, just have to do something about the back pressure and avoid using warcomp(extra loud and carbon lock). H3 and +15% spring may not be good enough. Nowadays I would go straight for a CAT WB Inconel for 5.56, it has RC2 level of muzzle suppression, Huxwrx level of ear suppression and close to Huxwrx level of low back pressure. On top of that, its performance is scalable when you go from MK18 to M4, unlike most cans on the market that are tuned for a specific ammo and barrel length.

    • @jamesshoots
      @jamesshoots 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@JohnZ556 Ah this is good to know. Thanks for sharing. I actually have a Warcomp on my M4 :( But right now, just a normal A2 flash hider on my MK18. Would you say it is worth the upgrade to the 4-prong, or something like that? I've heard about tuning the buffer weights - will need to do that too.

    • @JohnZ556
      @JohnZ556 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@jamesshoots If you gonna stick to the RC2 plan, definitely use 3 or 4-prongs for way better suppression than warcomp. Those open tined FH also allows you use the RC3 without throwing flames. But again, since the newest RC3 is a big overpriced let down despite took decade to update, and you're likely gonna replace that warcomp. This is your final chance to avoid SF cans all together. I would recommend you look into Huxwrx or even better CAT WB. Those require little to no tuning, and will shoot more smoothly, less gas to the face than Surefire. Adding buffer and spring are downstream fixes, it can only correct so much. Your MK18 might end up jump like a blowback PCC instead of running like a smooth AR. Speaking from my first hand experience, the choice of suppressor can make a huge difference especially on MK18, and your carbine gassed M4 clone is also going to suffer from back pressure quite a bit.

    • @armorers_wrench
      @armorers_wrench 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@jamesshoots Bootleg adjustable bcg will help with the gas pressure. As far as your pin and weld, are you handy with a grinder? If you are they're super easy to remove but you might damage your warcomp in the process. You could have a gunsmith do it for ya, won't cost that much. OR, just have the gunsmith remove it and sbr the lower. Makes life easier tbh.

    I actually just signed my transfer paperwork yesterday for an M17. It definitely doesn’t feel as nice in the hand as the 1911 I have, but I’m giving it a shot. Definitely gonna be my SHTF gun.

      Haha I know what you mean. The 1911 feels much sturdier, but that’s not to say that the M17 feels cheap. There’s definitely a difference with those polymer frames!

      @@jamesshoots I agree. Just picked up my M17 yesterday. It feels good, but it’s just different. The I have the Tisas night stalker single stack in 9mm. That’s how I found you channel, the Tisas review. It feels solid and is fun to shoot. The sig is more practical and is definitely my SHTF gun. Just need more mags, cause I got it used and only have a 21 round and 30 round mag. The Tisas feels better, but the sig is just as cool, just different.

    You carry the longer mag(s) on your belt as extra if needed

    I owned one for a week and got rid of it. It just felt cheap to me compared to my Glocks. Maybe if it had a metal frame I’d like it more.

      Changing out grip modules to one that fits you better is really easy and one of the main features of the p320 series

    I moved on from my M17, but it did its job and gave me few issues. Great video!
