Why you should own the TRIJICON ACOG

  • The Trijicon TA31 ACOG is well known for its durability, large field of view, and exceptional optical clarity. It's commonly associated with the M16A4 rifle as well. Here are some pro and cons of this famous fixed 4x optic, which sits on top of my M16A4 clone.
    My M16A4 has performed well after 5,000+ rounds of both brass and steel cased 5.56mm NATO.
    This rifle is an "inspired" clone, meaning doesn't have any Colt or FN/FNH parts, but it does include things like the Trijicon ACOG TA31RCO-A4CP, MaTech BUIS, and Knight's Armament M5 RAS non-free floated rail. It also has various Bravo Company USA, Aero Precision, and Toolcraft parts.

      I have a TA02 for my DD M4A1. It's great. I like the FSP, too, but I don't have one of those. I could get the upper at some point or just get a DD front sight to put on the picattany. The only thing about having the FSP attached to the barrel is that it might be more of a challenge to get a new barrel like that if or when needed so I thought maybe just attaching that DD one to the front rail might work fine. It's definitely cheaper than an upper. Lol.

    My dream optic was always tied between the ACOG and holographic sights since they've been lingering in my favorite games and movies as I grew up. Until recently I learned about prism optics which are a great budget optic if you cannot afford an ACOG but want the reliability of one. It is not just the eye relief that makes the TA11 easier, the eye box is over 50% bigger as well. So basically if you are looking at a target and then bring your rifle up you will almost instantly be able to get the reticle on target. The 3.5 LED Acog will change your entire opinion on Acogs as a whole, IMO it is the best optic on the planet if you learn to shoot it with both eyes open it’s just as fast as a red dot 0-25 and makes hitting 6” plates at 100-500 a joke for someone with little to no experience.
    The big issue is the cost at 950-1350$ depending on the model.

      The RCO has about the same eye relief as the aperture sights. For as long as the Marines have issued the M16 and its derivatives, they have taught chipmunk cheek and nose to charging handle to achieve proper head position for the iron sights. The RCO requires a nearly identical eye relief to the rear aperture, and for most of us, the A2 stocks accommodate that well until you start adding body armor and pack straps. In your IBA with your patrol pack on, the length of pull on the A2 becomes an issue. I am 6'6" and manage, but even I still feel like I really have to crane my head forward unnaturally to achieve proper eye relief with body armor on. But the eye relief on the RCO really isn't the issue it is made out to be if you are using the techniques you are trained with. Again, the rear aperture has been used effectively on the M16 for 60 years and on previous US service rifles for 60 years prior to that. If you think getting your eye up to the aperture on a 5.56mm rifle is sketch, consider the M14, M1 Garand, and M1903A3 all had aperture sights as well that required your eye to be within an inch and a half of them while firing a full power .30 caliber rifle round.

    in 2024 this is by far the WORST option. Terrible eye relief, fixed magnification, BDC is only true to one particular ammo, etc. A red dot sight like an Aimpoint T-2, Sig 4t, or Eotech will be much better. Add a magnifier a you got the best of both worlds. And if you really want more in magnification, an LPVO would serve you much better. Vortex Razor line, Nightforce ATACR, Leupold Mark 5's, etc.
    ACOGs were invented in the early 90's and good for the time period. In 2024, they are REALLY outdated and are surpassed by many better options. Especially for the price. $1,000 for a fixed power optic is stupid when you can buy a Vortex Razor 1-6 for $1500 or less. And same for a quality red dot. Aimpoint T-2 and a magnifier will run you around $1500. A red dot and magnifier OR an LPVO will give you more capabilty than an ACOG will.
    ACOG's don't play nice with NV and Thermals as well.

    • @armorers_wrench
      @armorers_wrench 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      ACOG RMR stack is a great option if you're concerned about weight. Dot+Mag usually weighs more and the magnifier has even worse eye relief than an ACOG so really that option isn't great. LPVO's are great, I like them, no complaints there but you'll still want a red dot mounted on top or on an Arisaka offset or something. Most people do, especially since you're bringing up NV. If you're an NV user then some sort of offset dot is just as important as if you're running an ACOG.
      Also, the ACOG BDC might only be "true" for one ammo/barrel length but it if you just use a ballistic calculator and shoot your gun you'll figure out what the holds actually line up to with your choice of ammo/barrel length. It's not rocket science. I have every combination of optic you listed and the ACOG RMR is a simple, rugged, and effective option that is less expensive than most of the other stuff you listed. The ACOG would be even better if Trijicon continued to improve the reticle design and offer wind holds and such.
      I personally usually use an LPVO+12 o'clock red dot but it weighs significantly more than an ACOG+RMR. That's a legit consideration when you also add in a light, suppressor, maybe a LAM, etc.

      So much nonsense in one comment 😂😂 if you can afford $10,000 night vision then why does it matter if the acog is expensive? Also night vision is beyond laughable if you’re not in the military. There’s zero eye relief issues with my TA31. That’s a bigger myth than the Loch Ness monster. And there’s not a more durable optic on planet earth. There’s videos of throwing one off a cliff, running it over with a truck, setting it on fire, shooting a hole through it and blowing it up with tannerite and it still holds zero. And it’s easy to use up close if you just take two seconds to practice with it. An lpvo is incredible fragile

    • @Kipdeisel
      @Kipdeisel 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Magnifiers eye relief is awful too. if you're going for a reflex or red dot with a magnifier, an ACOG is the much much better option. An aimpoint too? Really, a $1000 for a friggin red dot? That's the most over priced garbage in the country. For $1000-1200, an ACOG is a superior option to anything you mentioned and CHEAPER TOO. @@armorers_wrench Difference with RDS and magnifier combo vs ACOG, you can totally remove magnifier and just run dot if not needed. Also ACOG lacks true one power REQUIRING an RDS which then will sit extremely tall causing loss of connection to rifle and the typical chin weld. Not ideal. And while magnifiers do not have great eye relief there are ways to use them that mitigate this. Check out Fred at Counting Coup or Mark at Praecore, they teach classes on this. And yes an RDS is a nice option paired with an LPVO.
