Trailstar Tarp & Bivy English Scottish Border Wall
I had my new MLD Trailstar Tarp to try out, I fancied a nice flat hill top, It was not to be, a storm came in and I had to find a pretty sheltered spot to pitch, I still suffered the wind, In the morning I noticed a so called bomb proof peg had failed and my Tarp was loose, these pegs are sold as, must have in your peg bag as they can be hammered in and can get you out of trouble, useless, I was to use these on my Scotland trip !!
I also review the excellent little pocket table by serotonin,
Honestly it’s a great little table which I will always have in my pack.

    Just to point out that he wasn't using the most stormworthy TrailStar pitch. He made the door with the corner between two panels, which is a better choice in calm weather when you want an airy pitch. The tarp is even stronger if you make the door with the mid-panel tie-out - for example the tie-out where they sew the MLD logo.

      @@northumberlandmountainhopper It's a perfectly valid pitch - it's just not the best option in a storm. Fortunately you chose a sensible sheltered spot, unlike the TH-camrs who head for the windiest pitches in search of drama and clicks.

    By, that was a windy one Adrian. You can pitch the trailstar two ways with the pole either on an apex or a midpoint. Either way, peg the two points either side of your pole straight down to the ground to maintain the tension. You can of course tie a guy across to a pole so you have an unobstructed entrance. I'm dead impressed with my copy, will definitely have plenty of camps in it next year. Great video, thank you

    I’m unhappy with my Wechsel tent. Fortunately, it came with different pegs so at least it’s still usable. Probably a company to avoid for now. With my Trailstar, I use titanium pegs - V channels for peaty ground and nails for stony ground. They weren’t cheap but the work reliably. I use 6g shepherd hooks on the intermediate pegging points. I carry 4 of the V channels, 4 of the titanium nails and 8 shepherd hooks. Whichever is gripping better go on the windward pegging points and on the long doorway guyline. I don’t use the intermediate pegging points on the door way and, as a result, I can really haul on the big guyline to get the doorway tight. Obviously, the back peg comes under pressure when I do this so it needs to be well seated. I started carrying the two main types of peg because the Trailstar is so big that I was getting half of it on gravelly lawns next to streams and the rest on peat so I carry pegs which do well in both of those situations. It can be hard to squeeze a Trailstar in between rows of trees in plantations because of the size. However, my Trailstar has a hanging loop on the outside so can be used without a central pole in woods if there’s room between the trees. I didn’t notice whether your Trailstar had that loop but it probably does. You probably know that pitching a corner up opens the Trailstar nicely for conditions which aren’t too bad. Very brave of you to get out in that weather. I didn’t!

      @northumberlandmountainhopper 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi and thanks for watching, certainly a good tarp, I got the back nice and tight, just need a bit more practice, the MSR cyclone pegs are my go to for grass soft soil,heavy at 36gr each but I want some strong nails for hard ground, like you say a few of each, those pegs have put me off two part pegs, Easton ? A few fails the same if you search online so looking like titanium nails one piece hopefully, I have 10 gr hooks so maybe look for lighter ones, Cheers Adrian

    Nice one Adrian, that wind looked a wild one 😮, trailstar is a great shelter mate, I’ve had one for a bit now, and love it, most of the time I pitch it having a point at the back with the MLD logo as my front door and pole height around 120 -125cm , then start at the back, tighten the sides then finish at the front and the whole thing becomes super taught, no flapping or noise under the tarp, if you watch Tony Hobbs channel he does a lot of trailstar instructional videos etc, great watch as always mate, oh and that table looks great for the xboil , atb Mick 👍

      Hi and thanks for watching, Glad you enjoyed it, DD super light are great without doubt but this one is more wind resistant for my upcoming Scottish trip next year, not as versatile as a DD for sure as a large foot print, but when I pitch it correctly you can see how tight it goes Cheers Adrian

    Surely the peak has to be lifted for a taut doorway . Dropping it would make it worse ? I think 🤔 I like the trail star , I might get one .

    • @northumberlandmountainhopper
      @northumberlandmountainhopper 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@waxer00 hi and thanks for watching You can lift the door yes, but you can also drop it as it has 5 equal panels so can make a tight pyramid, I just could not face chancing a repot h in the wind !!! I will improve as it was my first use Cheers Adrian

      @rbreiff73 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The door definitely needed lifting to get a decent taught pitch. For those conditions a mid oanal door would've given you much more protection. There's never any need for flapping and loose panels in a Trailstar. Nothing a bit of fettling wouldn't sort. Looked an excellent camp though.

    Nice one Adrian (and Graham) it's a real jaw dropper the first time you clamber over that big rock and enter Narnia lol - I could hear you were impressed with the hidden crags and waterfall 😂😁 I said to Graham it's not somewhere I'd have ever camped, it's got a funny feel to the place, an uneasy feeling - plus it's always been damp and cold down there even in summer. So hats off to you lads for bivvying there, well done. I love your water clarity gadget as well - I might have a look online for one. Another good 'un. ATB from DVS :)

      Hi and thanks for watching, Glad you enjoyed it, In my video where I test the tester, I tested my sawyer, it failed miserably, and I know I had never froze it as it was only used a few times in the forest, perhaps the peaty dirty water contaminated it, See video Also see comment off asdf789 in this video Cheers Adrian

      Hi and thanks for watching, Glad you enjoyed it, it’s some spot ! No warnings about freezing on the pure clear, but I won’t let it freeze, as how would I filter the mornings water ! The only drawback with this filter it drops unless you empty it, but a bag solves that. Cheers Adrian

  • @timypp2894
    @timypp2894 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

    👍 video. It could be Bella is light (12yr) for the mattress to be fully inflated that causing it to rise up and ending above her whilst she sleeps - the curve of the hammock and the rounding of the edging doesn't help with ridged inflated mat. Maybe next time try lesser inflation so the mattress "moulds" around the hammock. There again some campers put their mattress inside their sleeping bag. Alas need to get a right size mattress for the child(?) sleeping bag.
