Train Spotting with Barrie
Australia
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 20 ม.ค. 2022
This channel is dedicated to my father whom spent countless hours documenting life with his video camera, particularly trains and locomotives around Sydney Australia in the late 80s and 90s. He and I got ourselves into many locations and situations that you could only dream of accessing now, from cab rides to yard tours. We post a retro video every Saturday and a modern rail related video every Wednesday to cover everybody’s taste. Enjoy.

Impressive indeed thanks Barrie for sharing ❤😊
Hi Trevor, thanks so much for the support. 👍
Hi Barrie 👋 I travelled through Gunning yesterday on the XPT while returning to Wagga, and the train actually stopped there. I immediately remembered your previous video and that I had mentioned that in all the years of travel the train had never stopped. I think Inland rail will have a big impact on trainspotting with many of these trains using the more direct route. I am wondering if you have seen the freight terminal in St Mary's and maybe filmed it. I have not seen any TH-cam creators cover this terminal, which surprises me due to its close proximity to the station. Excellent video Barrie, well done 👏 👍
Nice work Barrie!
Hi Dave. Thanks so much. Something slightly different.
I don't get all the movements back and forth.
Hi Dean, different power notches to gain speed. You can see the positions in the beginning of the video. Thanks for watching 👍
@@trainspottingwithbarrie Cheers thanks Barrie :-)
where is gunning?
Hi Peter. Gunning is in the Southern Tablelands of NSW Aus, near Canberra. 👍
I shopped there after school with my Mum and later spent many hours sitting on the taxi rank on Forest Road in front of the station when driving for St George in the early 1980's. I didn't return for quite a few years and was in tears when I saw what Hurstville had become. I very rarely go there now as it distresses me so much.
Fish River and the viaduct are mentioned in Frank Clune’s 1944 book “Rolling Down the Lachlan”. He makes a comment about how there isn’t much water in the river, probably he suggests, because the steam engines passing through the area were using it all!
Is there any chance of more footage of Adelaide station between 82 and 90?
Hi. There is still footage, I'll be doing a search through next month, so there should be soon. Thanks for watching
@@trainspottingwithbarrie That would be very interesting in seeing how the station could be upgraded
Incredible footage, sir. i still remember a lot of premises captured today, especially Red Apple fruit shop. well done.
Hi Mathew, thanks so much. The area has changed so much hasn't it.
@@trainspottingwithbarrieVery much so. i can't believe it's only been 33 years but blimey, my days.
Thanks Barrie. Another great vid and with a well researched and interesting story. Thanks for information regarding the collision of the two trains at Fish river in 1888. Thoughts are with Mr Hill and Mr Sandler, the train drivers and also the train guards who must have been badly traumatised by the collision and the accidental death of the settler Mr Wisby.
Thank Denizen for the great comment and also for coming out with me to film. It just goes to show you never know what history is around you in the most mundane places.
I miss the red rattlers. They were a fun ride. I would support a comfortable single level car train returning to Sydney city trains if they were able to run trains more frequently which I know is a hassle on Sydney's antiquated rail system.
That's not high speed, that's a joke
Now, that was interesting Barrie - I’ve seen that water tank driving past there, but never really took much notice of the pump house. And what about it largely being intact considering its last use could’ve been 1962. Railway modellers can use your videos to model this realistically-a real history piece. Great bit of video - as always!
Hi Andrew. That's high praise thank you. I make these videos to record history, if someone can use them then I feel I've done a good job. Thanks for watching.
Another amazing presentation and an interesting insight into our railway history. Well done Barrie 👏 👍
Hi John. Thanks so much. I'm really happy you enjoyed it.
@trainspottingwithbarrie You're very welcome Barrie 👍
Great work Barrie, most impressive and well researched, looking forward to the next railway history video.
Hi Dave. I'm heading to Rydal and wallerawang tomorrow. I hope there is something similar around there that is abandoned or disused.
@@trainspottingwithbarrie Wallerawang still has both signal boxes, both closed and boarded up, steam engine watering tank still on the ridge, Goods Shed is still there and the usual five ton hand crane nearby, other than that sweet FA.
You can trace the old single line that went through the original tunnel near "Good Earth" garden centre too, worth a look.
Well all that would make it worth it.
@@trainspottingwithbarrie The old single line tunnel is directly across from the current tunnel, but on private property and fenced off, however, I asked nicely and was allowed access, about five years ago. Be careful, the owners house surrounded by savage mongrel dogs.
Thanks for the clip, top info. Enjoyed the look inside the pump room. Sad about the train accident. Cheers and best wishes.
Thanks so much. I enjoyed making this one. I'm glad you liked it.
Great video. Thanks. There is one of those pumping stations that looks similar at Denman NSW. I notice it every time I drive past it and wonder if it was an old pumping station.
Hi, I might make it out there one day. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
18:30 I lived near Marion station. I was 6 years old back then. 1988 was the final year they used the destination numbers (like 46A, 72A, 73A etc) on the 2000 series railcars. Yes the distinct humming sound of the air conditioning.
I used to drive these in the 80's. Didn't realise they were now heritage.
Hi Graham, yeah it makes me feel old. Hahaha. Thanks for watching
Brilliant video Barrie
I'm glad you liked it Mel. Thanks for watching
Fantastic video Barrie
Hi Mel. Thanks so much.
As kid I used to travel on the comet lots of times between Orange to Dubbo when I use to visit my Grandparents. My Dad was an engine driver in Dubbo. My parents move to Sydney. So trips to Dubbo were often lucky enough my trip with my father found that he knew the driver of the comet and he invited my dad and I up to the cab that was the high lite of my trip I Evan got to blow the horn.
Such memories to be hold, thanks Barrie for the video. Did I hear "Piss off" at 1:00 ?
Hi Drover dog, yeah I think you're right, in all the years we did filming there were only 2 unhappy people. We always tried to be respectful and not get into anyone's face. Thanks for watching
OMG, what a memory of early 90's. Also I remember passing through from Central through darling harbour to Rozelle all the way to Enfield. There is nothing more valuable in this life than good memories to cherish. Thankyou very much for the video, much appreciated.
Hi, I agree with you fully. My whole channel is about memories, past and future. Thanks so much for watching.
High speed 😂
I know right. 😂
Great use of Multi-angle shots Barrie.
Hi Class38s thanks a lot. Helps to have someone with me.
Outstanding documentary! I found it quite amusing seeing the locals of Menindee place a car on the tracks protesting against the Comet’s replacement, and when did Ivanhoe and Menindee regain their rail service as there is currently one today?
Hi, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Yeah that scene with the car had me sad for the car as I've owned a white Austin 1800, poor car 😪 Thanks so much for watching.
Considering the location Barrie good old Gunning is very well lit for a country outpost. Flat battery on the BOG light on SCT too, no flash. Decent tonnage on that Qube steel train too, I like the five ton hand crane inclusion too, keeping our rail history alive. You didn't happen to check out the makers plate on it?
Interesting station Barrie, John Whitton style station architecture on the Down Main and Kyogle station style architecture on the Up Main looking kind of Edwardian from circa 1910.
Great eye there, thanks for adding that extra info.l, and thanks for commenting
Hi Barrie 👋 this is an amazing multi camera presentation with the drone and ballast footage being my favourite. I will look differently at this little town when I next pass through on my journey to Sydney. Excellent presentation, well done Barrie 👏 👍
Great video Barrie 😮freighters are great the amazing sunset
Hi Chad, yeah gotta love the diesel hauled freight. Thanks for watching
Up to brissy?
Heading South on the Down to Melbourne 👍
The grey Ghost would ply that line right?
Hi Simon, you are correct. Late 80s. 4499 if I'm correct was painted up to match the tulloch cars. Thanks for commenting
@@trainspottingwithbarrie i thought it was 4479 which was in your video but i could be wrong about the number
930am booked seats only
Great memory John. Book your seat at the booking office. Thanks for watching
Great footage, descent lighting as well. Mine struggles a lot in low light.
Yeah it's hard to get good motion night footage. I still wasn't overly happy with the quality of the footage of the first train in the video but it came out ok. Thanks so much for the support.
@@trainspottingwithbarrie I know exactly what you mean. I've had to avoid the early morning footage and the Westlander unfortunately as it passes though after midnight. Ah well, all part of the fun. :)
Great video Barrie and memories of the red rattlers. I wonder how long before the Tangarras are replaced, those top windows are hard to see out off.
Yeah good point. I wonder if they will change those out as part of the T set refurbishment. Thanks for commenting
As a SETS member, Millfren the wreckers allowed some of us to souvenir some interesting parts. Some preserved. A lot of cars, without asbestos were sold.
I'm sure those parts are on the rate side now. I have a few miscellaneous bits and pieces too. Thanks for watching and commenting
I was on it
It was a good run. Maybe I saw you. Thanks for watching
but what about v sets ?
Hi. I focussed on the Sydney trains network for this video. The V sets will get their own video shortly.
The 2 photos of the unknown frames are P class engine frames and the shape of the frame sticking up is the newer frames, in the 1950's it was found that the original low frames of the class were cracking causing most of the class to be reframed with higher frames.
Thanks so much for that great info Shed, It's much appreciated. Thanks for watching
A lot of great Cinematic shots Barrie.
Thanks a lot. The sky was pretty amazing, the video doesn't do it justice
Great video! You’re keen Barrie - Southern Tablelands, early morning in winter! 🥶What a pity there aren’t any trains nowadays to Crookwell - love to see you there as the mixed arrives from Goulburn in the early hours!
Hi Andrew, I'm sure the next one will be colder, the cold weather at least gives some great colour in the sky and cloud formations. Thanks for following along.
Well done excellent video and thanks for sharing your experience Cheers Richard
Hi Richard. My pleasure. I'm glad you enjoyed it. 😃
"The early commuter, always gets the best seat on the train..." Would have been my opening title Barrie. Great scenes of the station area with our omnipresent Pied Currawongs, Pink Galah's plus Magpies in the background, you couldn't get more Australian that that! The five ton hand crane really sets it off, great video, much enjoyed.
Thanks Dave, there were so many birds, it actually made flying the drone a problem. The actual train footage is coming in next week's video. The morning footage was just too pretty not to do something with it.
AWESOME . . .
Hi thanks a lot. I'm glad you liked it.
Love it, thanks you Barrie. The 1980s - peak NSWGR - decades of history all at once, rolling around NSW.
Hi John. Yeah that's a great way of describing it. Thanks for watching
That's a cool bit of footage
Hi Joseph. It was a big day of filming. Thanks for watching
Any reason there were no V/U sets in the platforms?
Not from memory, just that time of the day where they were a little quiet I guess. Thanks for watching
