  • In this video we follow the iconic South Coast Daylight Express as it makes its way South down the Illawarra line from Central to Bomaderry (Nowra).
Taken from three points of view, the driver, passenger and on looker, we track the journey to Nowra while talking about the history of the Iconic train and points of interest as we pass.
There are some great close passes as the diesel locomotive roars past pulling the ex railcar BUD and Tulloch cars.

I enjoyed this vid so much, Barrie. Living at Loftus, with a view of the railway line from our backyard, we loved looking out for "The Silver Train" each afternoon. When I attended school at Sutherland Public in 1974 & 75, I caught the CPH rail motor to and from each weekday. I vaguely recall one occasion when the CPH was out of action on short notice, and we were allowed to get onto the SCDE, which stopped at Loftus, Engadine, Heathcote, and Waterfall before returning to its usual running schedule. It was a buzz to step onto one of those luxurious Budd cars, even just for that one-stop ride home!

Hi Barrie 👋 I have very fond memories of taking this train twice a year with my mother and grandmother from a very young age. I was so excited to be going on this very long and exciting adventure, with my own little suitcase and a packed lunch. I can almost smell the vinyl seats and feel the wind through the open windows. I was mesmerised by the sea views down the coast while munching on my Vegemite sandwich and glugging down copious amounts of Coka Cola. While everyone else was lauding the introduction of the electric trains, I was mourning the demise of the diesel hauled train. Not that long ago, I boarded the rail motor in Bomaderry for my journey to Sydney and was reminiscing the old days and totally forgot to change at Kiama and awoke while coming into Bomaderry. That was a very long journey to Sydney 😂. Great video, Barrie, and thanks once again for the memories.

Thanks so much John for sharing your stories as always. I could just imagine the type of suitcase you had too. It seemed like such a trip back then with all the sights and sounds that made it exciting for a younger person. Lost some of that character today. Thanks so much for sharing.

Thanks Barrie. Brought back a lot of memories, From travelling on the rear platform of a train hauled by (I think) a 32-class down to Austinmer, to trips on the then self propelled Budds, and most recently the Endeavours. Always a beautiful trip, particularly from Waterfall to Coalcliff, and then the last leg, Kiama to Bomaderry. It was also interesting to see the old footage of the Bomaderry yard, and note the things that are still the same, and those that have changed (I live part time at Bomaderry now).

9:05 It is good that the Ampol logo still uses the same kind of font today and Caltex is still around. There were a few fuel depots down here for instance the engine shed that used to stand opposite the Dairy Farmers factory was converted into an Esso siding sometime in the 1960s. There was also a Mobil depot running off the Manildra Mill branch, Ampol at the northern end on the western side of the line fed from Port Kembla and possibly Shell across the street but there is no evidence of a level crossing. It possibly ran from behind the depot onto the Manildra Mill branch backwards. V/Line boxcars were seldom seen this far down but were commonly used on Port Kembla - Acacia Ridge Steel Products trains and on the same kind of trains to Dynon.

Up until the 38 class came on line after 1943 this train was commonly hauled by the 35 and 36 class locos which were built locally for up to three decades earlier. The SCDE and other Expresses like the Riverina, Newcastle, Southern Highlands etc. became the fast trains of their day when the 38's took over. 3801 set a record back in 1964 for the Newcastle run that stood for many years.

I worked down the Illawarra line in the 80's right through the electrification project, shuntine at Unanderra and signalling at Port Kembla and Dombarton. Doing general relief I managed to work almost every station and signal between Waterfall and Bomaderry. Your video misses a lot of the best scenery on the NSW Railways, but it's a good one regardless. I have many fond memories of that boredom inducing job , waiting for trains.

I once worked at a place opposite the Bomaderry station when we heard the sound of a fettler's trike going flat out and as it got closer, we could see that there was no one it................. about 10 minutes later a steam locomotive arrived with the fettlers on the footplate. It turned out that they had not been informed that there would be an extra train on the line that day. They jumped clear of the trike when they saw the train approaching, however when it hit the trike the throttle was jammed open and away it went! A farmer's wife had seen it happen and rang the station to inform them, so the points were changed to divert it to the end of the line where it hit the buffers, tipped onto its side and was still revving flat out when they got to it. I understand that the then self-propelled Budd set had crossed this train at Berry, the next station along the line.

Some great locomotive combinations hauling those sets Barrie, great video. I wonder what happened to those troublesome Budd and Tulloch sets in the end? Scrapped, I presume, don't think any were preserved. I remember seeing one car sitting in a farm paddock somewhere between Molong and Orange I recall. Had a full view of the Harrow Road Underpass at Hogben Park between Rockdale and Kogarah between 1947 and 1962. The earliest 'South Coast Daylight' I saw was a streamloned '38' hauling green and cream 'corridor' cars, sometimes a '36' but both were relieved down at Thirroul or somewhere for a lighter '32'. Then came the first air-conditioned cars hauled by a '44 class diesel. Don't remember the Budd Cars. Remember also the ubiquitous end-platform 'Yankee' cars plus 'dogbox' ('Express Lavatory'!) and mail van. At 4 o'clock every afternoon the 'milk train' rolled by with a string of milk pots from Bomaderry.

Umm, from the information I have, the 1200 class never worked the South Coast Daylight under their own power. They were only operated on the Riverina Express under their own power. They were de-motored then allocated to the south coast along with the Budd cars.

I caught a train by this name many years ago - probably early 60s, when it consisted of Budd diesel rail cars. I particularly caught it to try travelling in them. I only went as far as Kiama, where I found a milk-bar to buy my lunch, have the short walk to the blow-hole and catch the returning train. For some reason it was taken off the south coast line in 1957 and replaced with an old side corridor non air conditioned set for about 3 years. The Budd set arrived in February 1961, however in the few months leading up to then a 4 car 920 set was used.
