    I bought one of these in "not working" condition. Turned out that the rubber bumpers in the shutter release linkage had deteriorated and were preventing the the shutter from releasing. It was a relatively easy fix. I am impressed that Pentax cast the shutter dial in metal instead of just printing the numbers. It is undoubtedly the best film camera that Pentax ever made.

    Hi! I’ve hustled recently stumbled upon your content and I’m glad I did. Keep up the great work. I dig the unbiased, sober and the straight up approach to camera gear you’re providing here. I think I saw another video of yours where you mentioned something about a manual that shares some information about parts that are exchangeable between the Spotmatic F and K1000. I am playing around with the idea of creating the perfect hybrid of the two but don’t know where to start. I think that manual would be of great help if you don’t mind sharing it?

    • @RompingBronco
      @RompingBronco 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yo! Thank you very much, I appreciate you. As for the manual it does exist it’s a few small sections in the K1000 repair manual but truthfully if you wanted to create a hybrid I would recommend just swapping the KM front plate and the self timer with the K1000. The KM is the K mount version of the F and the man differences between the F are the Lens mount, self timer, flash sync ports and battery compartment so depending on what you’re looking to do the KM would be an easier approach and if you want to mount M42 glass I would just say go for the adapter I hope this helps1

      @@RompingBronco thank you. All of this is great feedback! Would I be able to get a K1000 SE split screen into the Spot F, you think? • @RompingBronco
      @RompingBronco 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The focus screen should be possible, I’ll tinker with the F I have on hand and see for sure, as for the on off switch that may require some doing, you’d have to rewire the power contact completely and probably fasten contacts to that switch, it’s possible but I’ve not really given it a whole lot of thought. i’ll mess with the F I have an see what comes of it!

    Thanks for all the Pentax love. I have a Spotmatic SP and SP500 and I have been given a lot of grief for using them by my local camera shop guys... everyone seems to hate them but inexplicably LOVE K1000s, which I also have that I bought for my sister in law but got it back a year later. The earlier K1000s I am told are the better buy, the Asahi ones, because they are better built and were still made in Japan. Old Pentax from the 60s and 70s are very reliable and very well built.

    • @RompingBronco

      That’s super lame, not sure what camera shop you’re going to but don’t listen to them. The SP is just a few steps away from a K1000 and the SP500 is just a budget friendly SP Nothing wrong with that, especially if it’s a camera you enjoy

    Not really getting Pentax guys... is it because that was the first film camera your dad gave you? I don't think they ever had the best camera amongst the top manufacturers. They always had really nice cameras. Nothing ever mind blowing. Even little things like aethetics... what's with the little dots on the shutter speed dial instead of zeros. It just looks goofy to me. Nikon FE2 for performance and beauty. And olympus OM-1 or OM-2 for shear portability of the body and the lenses with a million things to go with that system.

    • @RompingBronco
      @RompingBronco 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Initially I loved the K1000 because it was the first camera I learned to repair and then my dad gave me his old one so that kind of spurred it on. Personally I think the F3 is a much more beautiful and capable camera than the FE2, something about the FE2’s shutter stresses me out too much to want to shoot with one and I see what you mean with the OM1 and OM2 but I feel like the MX kind of fits that category for me. Just like anything there are pros and cons, I think the accessibility to a lot of their cameras and mechanical reliability has always been a reason I’ve stuck around. I love the comment though, thank you for watching and reaching out!

    • @urwholefamilydied
      @urwholefamilydied วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@RompingBronco a 1/4000th shutter stresses you out?? LOL. Alright. The FE2 also has an analog meter rather than the LCD meter of the F3 that wont tell you if you're in between shutter speeds and is prone to break. The FE2 also has a hot shoe if that's important. The FE2 is the better camera specs-wise. The F3 is pretty cool though.

    The goodwill website is sometimes useful for buying unpopular cameras to take apart and tinker with. DO NOT think you are getting a functioning camera. DO NOT try to buy a popular camera unless you like paying $100+ for a broken AE-1 or K1K (K1000). DO NOT buy an electronic camera or a Polaroid unless you want to use it as decoration on a shelf. As someone who has bought an excessive number of cameras off goodwill, I can count the number of cameras that were usable out of the box on one hand. Only one camera with a focal plane shutter was within spec, and that was a canon EF with a completely corroded bottom end. I had to replace wires and solder wires back on battery contacts with that acid flux. If that's not something you're comfortable doing, maybe look at KEH. Not trying to gate keep anyone, I just don't want you to waste you money.

      You would be wise to listen to this person. Don’t even think of dropping decent money on many of those lenses you see on SGW either, as they will undoubtedly be full of fungus, haze, and stuck oily aperture blades. Don’t ask how I know. It seems the only avenue left for SGW camera gear is strict bottom feeding of unhyped unpopular models/brands. And even then, don’t hold your breath.

    The Sidio crates aren't cheap, but they're worth the money. To me, anyway. Fairly often the company has closeout and scratch and dent sales where you can pick them up cheaper. I first bought some of the half size crates to protect my headphone collection. I've found the full size crates are great for heavy, bulky comic book bags and boards. And the different colors let me sort different categories of items. I like that I can stack them pretty high and put a lid on just the topmost crate and my stuff is collected and protected.

    I wish I could say the only camera store left in Dallas was great, but it's very hit-and-miss. I got roasted for using a Spotmatic by the owner who just hates them. I took my K1000 for bumper and light seal replacement and this is where it got fun. The bumper was way too thick and the mirror would get stuck. I took it back and the repair guy got angry with me and argued that it was fine. He reluctantly trimmed it down but the mirror was still sticking. Second trip back, another argument about him jacking up the mirror. I actually trimmed the bumper more because of this exchange. Then the owner, who hates spotmatics, argued with me that their tech didn't mess up the timing of the shutter despite my insistence that it worked fine when I brought it. I had to pay to get it fixed. Did I mention this is the only store left in Dallas that services film cameras? Ugh.
