Canon A-1's never get enough love. They're the top of the food chain of the A series Canons.

Bought one yesterday from someone that didn’t use it anymore and sold it very cheap with everything to go to someone that wanted to start film photography. Every time I shoot with it I can’t avoid smiling, I am loving it so far.

I loved my time with it. Kinda heavy, especially with the 50/1.4 SSC but very versatile. My favorite feat is the double exposure lever. In the end, I moved on to Pentax.

The Olympus OM-1 never gets enough love in my opinion so im glad to see it getting some attention here. Brilliant camera and the zuiko glass is superb.
The Olympus 35 SP is a great option for a fixed lens rangefinder. IMO

Have my grandma's k1000 and grandpa's canon tx both were sitting away in storage and untouched probably for decades. Been using the k1000 for years and it hasn't missed a beat also never been serviced. Same with the Canon but I have yet to put that one through its paces to see if it'll last after being neglected for so long. The absolute basic cameras are honestly great first investments.

What's wrong with the Olympus OM4.? The battery drain problem is easily fixable. Also, no mention of the Ricoh SLRs which are cheap and excellent. I've had my KR10 since 1982 and it still works fine (and takes K-mount Pentax lenses).

Big Canon guy here. The Canon A-1 was my first real 35mm camera I ever owned. Did a bunch of research at the time and had no idea why they were cheaper than the AE-1 and the AE-1 Program. The A-1 is easily the best camera out of that line..
As much as I loved my little A-1, when I upgraded to an F-1 it definitely felt nicer. Theres something about the F-1 (the original mechanical model) that feels snappier than the A series of cameras. I always attributed it to the Canon A series having a magnetic shutter release, but when you start using an F-1, the A series seems sluggish by comparison. The tradeoff for that nicer feel is that those original F-1s weigh about 10 tons and don't have any auto settings at all. Its a bit of tough love but I definitely think it makes you a better photographer in the long run.
I also agree that the TX and FTb are super slept on.

Great list and I am fortunate to have most of them already in my collection. I recently purchased a Minolta SRT 202 in lovely condition (GAS) but sadly the film take up spool slips, would appreciate any help in resolving this issue.🤞

I came to the conclusion about the rebel cameras on my own recently and got a rebel 2000 for 20 bucks with a kit lens. Only issue has been I tried loading some lomography film into it and something about the splined internal spool wasn't working out great with the auto advance. But when I put a roll of kodak in it it was fine. But I had a "wait, if people are moving to mirrorless and dumping ef lenses, and if rebels arent cool....". Saw some cheap Elans out there too.

Great list of Analog 35mm SLR and PS cameras to buy this year. I will like to include the EOS A2 and Elan7, they are very good cameras for the Canon DSR shooter. I own 4 of them with no problems. But like you said, they do not have the old camera look.

Please don’t spread the word about the super A (super program in America) too much. I quite like mine and I’m looking for a replacement after dropping and breaking mine.

I recently picked up a Nikon F80 (N80). I didn't know much about it, other than Nikons are decent, and that those SLRs produced when Digital was beginning to come in were all pretty good. I'm far from a camera expert, it's mostly vibes for me, but I'm looking forward to going out and shooting with it.

M42 Takumar lenses are so good that I regularly use them in a variety of focal lengths on my Pentax K-1 DSLR using a genuine Pentax M42 to P-K adapter. For black and white portraits they give certain 'magical' quality absent from Pentax DSLR lenses

My AE-1 was a gift from a client, keeps my FL / FD lens line-up alive but the camera is fragile as ever. I’m at a crossroads, I would say I shoot medium format 95 percent of the time but I do want to have a solid 35mm slr. Might be shooting for a canon F1

You flashed the Mamiya DTL 1000, but the prior TL 1000 is a little simpler and just as good. I've had a couple apart ,and are pretty easy to work on...at least as far as I dug in. I liked them so much I bought 5 more for parts, but they all worked ~ $10-15😊 ea.

Here to slot in my favourite pro-grade Nikon camera (because I can't afford an F5) in the F90X/N90S, absolutely love it. Paid ~$120 for mine, CLA'd with new lightseals and it felt like a brand new camera, can be had for a lot less though. My favourite lens is the 28mm f/3.5. absolutely beautiful lens.

Surprised you didn't mention the Pentax MX (or maybe I overheard?) - basically an OM-1 but better. Takes regular LR44 batteries, shows shutter and aperture speed in viewfinder, also a compact body with massive viewfinder and all mechanical shutter.
If you want a K1000, you could also get a KX, many more features yet they often can be found for the same or lower price. Similar to the Canon A-1 vs AE-1P situation.
The Takumar M42 lenses really are absolute gems. Best feeling lenses I own, and I have yet to come across one where the focus isn't still buttery smooth.

Ricoh XR-1 and XR-1S are both real sleepers. Both are P-K mount, all manual SLR cameras with 1/125sec flash sync.speed. The only difference between the two is that the XR-1S has provision for a power winder. Both have match-needle metering and split-prism focusing. I have one of each, the XR-1S with a working meter, the XR-1 without. Both really well-made cameras from the 1970's, bought in the last three years and giving great service. Neither body cost me more than Sterling £45-00

I got a rebel GII as a kid new. If you don’t mind the non retro look and plastic, it’s a very capable camera. Put a 40mm pancake on it and you have one of the best point and shoots for $120 all in. Or put a big L lens one it. Your choice. Still have mine.

If you want cheap, look at the Sears cameras. I have a KS-2 that shares a bag with my ME- super for his/hers photography excursions. Nobody knows what they are, and they take k-mount lenses. Also, I really like my Sears & JC Penny k-mount lenses. Also very cheap.

Minolta X-700 user here. Bought it in 1982 and hasn’t put a foot wrong yet! As a result of growing up on that camera I’m hardwired to use lenses where turning the aperture ring opens up the aperture, which rules out Nikon. Not affordable but my best ever film camera was the Mamiya 7. Only other thought is to buy a camera that’s the right size for your hands. People with larger hands might not suit an OM1

    • @RompingBronco
      @RompingBronco  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Love to here that! The Mamiya 7 seems like a great travel camera but the prices are STEEP and as one with hands on the larger side I don’t mind smaller cameras like the OM-1 or MX but that is a good thing to keep in mind, thank you!

Well, the Pentax MG, which was kinda even more dumbed - down variant of the ME, was my first SLR camera. Bought new. Yes I'm old. And at the time I was really into slide films. Now if you had worked with negative films most of the time you'd be fine, but the tendency of that camera to underexpose that slide film severly was really annoyng. On top of that, you couldn't do much with exposure compensation, course it was hidden under the rewind knob, meaning you was in the constant danger to open the camera door with exposed film in it... anyway, within a year I sold that thing.
These days I'm shooting film for fun in that amazing Olympus OM1n. And I also have OM40 (OM-PC) as a backup. But I got that camera for only $50 so...

I picked up a Minolta X570 due to the recommendations of most people to avoid the X700. The capacitors are known to go, X700 having 2 with 1 in a really annoying spot to get to. If the cap fails on the X570 I can solder a new one in the bottom. Thankfully it hasn’t given me too much trouble. I just replaced the light seals and ran a test roll through. The shutter speeds seem really good for a camera this old. I rigged up the little laser pointer sensor setup and it was pretty good!
I would like to pick up another Minolta at some point because loading B&W then wanting to shoot color sucks!!
