  • A quick update video going over some of the key differences in Pentax K1000 models, as well as what my recommendation would be if you were looking to buy one in 2024 and beyond.

    The K1000 as shown here is an original old version, it has the same little details as the KM, and the KM shares its top housing with the KX (industrial production optimization). The KX has a battery check button on the bump near the rewind knob. On the KM this bump is a blind unused spot. The KX does have a window for displaying the aperture, but to make this, Pentax only had to do a rectangular cutout in front of the prism housing (easy), and drill a hole for the battery check button on the bump. All these old Pentaxes have a serial number engraved on the top. These details can help identify an old K1000 version.
    To summarize :
    KX : shared top housing in brass, battery check button on the bump, front with cutout for the aperture window, Asahi + AOCo logo. Serial N# engraved on top, made in Japan.
    KM : shared top housing in brass, battery check bump unused, plain front. Asahi + AOCo logo. Serial N# engraved on top, made in Japan.
    K1000 initial version : same housing as the KM, serial # engraved on top, Asahi + AOCo logo. Made in Japan, or in Hong-Kong (origin label glued on bottom, often missing due to wear).
    K1000 second version : revised top housing, without the battery check bump, but still in chromed brass. Asahi + AOCo logo. Serial # is stamped on bottom (also brass). Made in Hong-Kong.
    K1000 third version, and K1000 SE : bottom plate and top plate made with plastic (surface metallized). Lot of plastic exterior parts. Only says "Pentax". Serial N# on the bottom, put with a glued label on a recess. Made in China.
    Cheers, and keep up the good Pentax content !

      This is fantastic, I appreciate all the info and you watching my video!

      @@RompingBronco You're welcome. There exist also many K1000 SE in second version (meaning they have solid chromed brass top housing and bottom plate), that I've forgotten to mention. So that amounts quite a few K1000 versions for collectors. I only bought one, in original version, that worked flawlessly from the get go (apart the foams that needed replacement of course).

    Excellent presentation - I adore the 45 degree split focusing screen on my SE

      Many thanks, I agree the split focus is a nice touch!

    I've got a question. How come when I look through the viewfinder of my K1000, I dont see the hexagonal bokeh or even the circular shape bokeh at wide open aperture. I feel like the Bokeh doesnt show up through the viewfinder and only on the negative. Why is that?

    Thanks for all the Pentax love. I have a Spotmatic SP and SP500 and I have been given a lot of grief for using them by my local camera shop guys... everyone seems to hate them but inexplicably LOVE K1000s, which I also have that I bought for my sister in law but got it back a year later. The earlier K1000s I am told are the better buy, the Asahi ones, because they are better built and were still made in Japan. Old Pentax from the 60s and 70s are very reliable and very well built.

      That’s super lame, not sure what camera shop you’re going to but don’t listen to them. The SP is just a few steps away from a K1000 and the SP500 is just a budget friendly SP
      Nothing wrong with that, especially if it’s a camera you enjoy

    Is the base plate for K1000 the same as the base plate for a KM?

      I believe it is, I haven’t seen a KM in a while but I’d venture to guess it is

    👍Cheers for the vid.The Pentax cameras I'll always keep are the 6x7 (not MLU)
    MX, Spotmatic F and K1000SE all metal version and all in exceptional condition. My ME F complete with original AF lens also sits on the shelf anticipating a repair someday!

    Hi!
    I’ve hustled recently stumbled upon your content and I’m glad I did. Keep up the great work. I dig the unbiased, sober and the straight up approach to camera gear you’re providing here.
    I think I saw another video of yours where you mentioned something about a manual that shares some information about parts that are exchangeable between the Spotmatic F and K1000. I am playing around with the idea of creating the perfect hybrid of the two but don’t know where to start. I think that manual would be of great help if you don’t mind sharing it?

    • @RompingBronco
      @RompingBronco  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yo! Thank you very much, I appreciate you. As for the manual it does exist it’s a few small sections in the K1000 repair manual but truthfully if you wanted to create a hybrid I would recommend just swapping the KM front plate and the self timer with the K1000. The KM is the K mount version of the F and the man differences between the F are the Lens mount, self timer, flash sync ports and battery compartment so depending on what you’re looking to do the KM would be an easier approach and if you want to mount M42 glass I would just say go for the adapter
      I hope this helps1

      @@RompingBronco thank you. All of this is great feedback! Would I be able to get a K1000 SE split screen into the Spot F, you think?
      I am also playing around with the idea of making the shutter button lock a combined on/off switch for the meter. Do you think that would be doable with some wiring and tinkering?

    • @RompingBronco
      @RompingBronco  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The focus screen should be possible, I’ll tinker with the F I have on hand and see for sure, as for the on off switch that may require some doing, you’d have to rewire the power contact completely and probably fasten contacts to that switch, it’s possible but I’ve not really given it a whole lot of thought. i’ll mess with the F I have an see what comes of it!

      @@RompingBronco thanks for the insight. I am looking forward to seeing what you might come up with in regards to the F adoption of a split screen. Do you know if the KM came with a split image variant such as the SE?

    1:06 Don’t know about KM, but KX has that battery check button. Although, I don’t think they share tops - KX also does have a window for displaying aperture inside viewfinder (same as MX)

    Hard to believe people would etch their SSI #’s on things as a form of ID

    I rarely comment on videos but as a user of Pentax since I was 16 and for 2 years before the much underrated Cosina CT1, who is now heading towards 59years old - I have to say I do enjoy your videos. It is refreshing to see someone who is not pushing an agenda and actually knows the cameras they feature.
    Currently I have an MX and a Black ME Super and clutch of lenses, as well as an Ist D which still does ok. Have also had P30, K2 a previous MX and Me Super, MG and Ricoh KR 10 super.
    Whilst the world and his dog rave about k1000 - there are now sadly so many overlooked KMs. If I didn’t have an MX I would definitely go KM way before a Chinese K1000 or even an early one.
