Thanks to the internet the alleged first photos have been released of the new pentax film camera and here I am to review my thoughts and opinions based off of the one photo. Riveting stuff I know.
The "film advance lever" you see on digital Fujis' and Leicas' that fits into the hotshoe is not meant to imitate an actual advance lever. It's a thumb grip, to make holding onto these tiny cameras with very small grips easier. It's not for looks.
my main concern is that they made the camera zone focus which would make it more difficult for their targeted market. I guess they're just expecting people to just have pocket rangefinders or figure out zone focus
@@Pepsiphopia fr i genuinely don't understand how people think zone focus is some herculean task when it's not. you can very easily learn and practice.
It’s bloody 1980’s ugly! I agree the vf is breaking the top portion. The grip looks too present and ugly as hell. Don’t like dull colors also. It’s not a design that would make it a jewelry item to show anywhere. Bad advertisement possibilities right there.
I have a feeling this is one of the prototypes of the new camera, the number 17 could mean what prototype they are at in this Project. From the last TH-cam post from Pentax, they have a working prototype and this could be it but there is no ground to confirm this. I think by Q4 of this year we will see an actual picture of what it could be. This does get me excited to see what’s in the works for this project.
My Sony A5100 has the same size flash. Works fine. As far as zone focusing, adding autofocus would have added to the complexity of manufacturing and price.
That's good to know, I'm not writing off the flash entirely just that it looks smaller than the viewfinder is a little interesting and I'm glad it's not an autofocus system for the record.
what an arrogant way to talk about something you have no idea and have not made a minimun research, each brand offers a very distinctive a approach to photography, and for those who have not used a Pentax before, I can assure you that this brand know how to made photography very enjoyable activity, kudos for them trying to bring something different
I appreciate your feedback but if you have watched any of my videos you'll know that I really enjoy a lot of Pentax cameras and almost always preface every point I make with the fact that it is only my opinion. I'm not sure your comment is a very good faith assessment of my content as a whole but still I appreciate you sharing your opinion
Fixed lens and I’m not sure if K mount would vibe with half frame, there are the talks of releasing an SLR later so that may be interchangeable K mount
Got to say it, it's ugly! Having said that, it's great that Pentax is making a new film camera and I hope it leads to others. I have two half frame 35mm cameras, an Olympus Pen S and a Canon Demi EE17. Both beautiful cameras. Just occurred to me that the Pentax 17 may have been inspired by the Canon Demi EE17 name. Pity they weren't inspired by its looks.
I'm still hyped for the camera. Altough it really doesn't look sexy. But no Pentax camera ever looked sexy lol It's utilitarian like every camera they make. I am just weary about the price. The last information that spilled out in 2024 was 650€, whilst Pentax told journalists in 2023 it'll be "above 500€." If this is entry level for them I hope it'll be 500 max.
I would argue the LX is real good looking camera and there are some really lovable features on the MX and S1 series but yeah they hit that 90's AF era and just got real gnarly
@@linjicakonikon7666Oh, no. You don’t approve. I will now be forced to the-evaluate my life choices because of disapproval from a random person with four subscribers.
For the last twenty years the world has agreed that the camera design of the 80s is the ugliest in history. I don't understand why they were so inspired by that time. Every part of the camera is excessive. Many textures, edges and borders, many texts and large ones! screws next to the viewfinder! How easy it will be for other brands to compete against this. In any case, I applaud the initiative.
I love what Pentax is doing for the community but man they do not seem to care about aesthetics 😂 this is an ugly looking camera but you’re right it could absolutely look worse
I Agree with the earlier comment as to who it may appeal to and when it's finally released at whatever price I'm sure there will be a dedicated Pentax agram app for everyone to show off their 1/2 frame masterpieces. I already have a Canon demi and Olympus FT for 1/2 frame photography, so count me out.
Their intended audience cannot afford it and will be treating it as a fad anyway for those that splurge for it. 1/2 frame 72 photos is not even in the attention span of the customer.
these half frame cameras without prisms and without AF or any real way to manually focus are such a waste. that 3.5 lens will be at f8 for 99% of the time for the photos to be in focus. just get a Kodak h35 for $40 if you really have a need for something like this.
I'm going to wait on passing any final judgement but depending on the price the H35 may end up being a more realistic option for a lot of consumers. Definitely appeals to a wider audience with the price point.
It's likely that this could just be an early iteration of the final design (I kind of hope it's the case) but regardless I think it's a step in the right direction just for the sake of bringing film cameras back.
I thought they specified the advance lever from the beginning as a must have. I think I remember this from the first teasers by Pentax.
Someone must have been living under a rock coz they confirmed it i think two times already.
wasn't it the rewind crank they confirmed?
Rock dweller confirmed 😎
I think they did, I read so much about this and the 35AF I got my wires crossed but thank you!
The fonts are same as in that of the pentax 67.

25mm on a half frame is a 35mm equivalent lens.
my main concern is that they made the camera zone focus which would make it more difficult for their targeted market. I guess they're just expecting people to just have pocket rangefinders or figure out zone focus
Zone focus ain't that hard
@@Pepsiphopia fr i genuinely don't understand how people think zone focus is some herculean task when it's not. you can very easily learn and practice.
Half frame will have a higher DOF than 35 mm, like how APSC cameras have more DOF than full frame
It will be especially easy at 25mm focal length
Their target demographic can have it set for 1m like it’s the case with all the other half frame cameras. The zone focus of for the rest of us.

I think pentax stated outright that the new camera would have an advance lever
Not happy with the half frame. But I want to support this camera in hopes others follow.
I agree completely

They confirmed the camera is going to be called pentax 17 tho
I just assumed it was 17 because it's a half frame camera
The viewfinder is portrait, is it a half frame?
It is, the design intent is to match the modern social media parameters and to make it more affordable for beginners
@@RompingBronco oooooh, now I really want one.
Where's the data connection flap and what sockets does it have?
I'd be interested in the quality of the video it records also.🤔
I believe it will only shoot 35mm still photography so no need for a connection port or any video quality specs
I get why it is what it is.
But it's not for me.
Would have liked to see a crowd funded M42 mount mechanical camera or a P3 MkII or something.
That's kind of my approach to it too, I like that it's small but at the end of the day I'm just glad they're trying something.
It is supposed to be half frame camera.
I'll class it as some sort of entry level camera, and a win for film in general, ill stick to my m6 tho
This makes me want that Mint Rollei camera even more. Hard pass if this is the actual Pentax.
They said it’s gonna have a manual advance leaver.
Take a look at the 1950s Agfa Isola. So weird the new Pentax don't look. 🙂 Back to the 50s 😁
Half frame! cool!
Give me an advance lever, auto and manual modes. Pre-focus and auto focus.

Wow really, like a film SLR?
Take it or leave it. You can get a good half frame camera for less than 150.
Canon Demi EE17 would be my choice
@@RompingBronco good under the radar choice. PEN FT will be mine.
I would think they would stay with the SLR functionality. Then again, none of their point & shoots were SLR's.

The Demi EE17 is one of my favorite looking cameras too, I'd take the light meter cells over a flash any day.
manual advance lever is best. the motorized spool winders dont have the best longevity

Nailed it 😂

They announced the specs on this months ago, and the zone-focusing is still a deal-breaker for me. Hopefully they'll try harder next time.
