An Underrated Pentax Film Camera

- In the day and age of affordable Pentax cameras being a little hard to find I humbly present the P3. An advanced camera for the time with the ability to accept K-A series lenses for ease of use and the manual speed dial for some if that old school feel it has just about everything you could ask for with a price that isn’t going to break the bank.
The P30"N" version of this camera allowed Aperture Priority Mode without having "A" lens to activate. It also had a exposure lock button. Paired aperture mode and exposure lock together with your work flow, this is how the Program and ME Super should have been.
The P30 - as we call it over here - is what I gave my daughter to try shooting film. Its all she uses for film, does everything she needs. I have one as well.
I'd like to give the P3 a try, but i feel my Super Program makes it kinda redundant. I dig the aesthetic though!
The only minus to me is the ONLY-DX code film cartridge reading. Otherwise, good enough, as its “bigger” brother, the P50.
I think the worst thing about the Pentax P3 is the lack of the ASA wheel. It only accepts DX film cartridges, otherwise the ASA is set to 100 and there is no exposure compensation.
I wish it had 1/2000 shutter speed.
The P30 is a fantastic camera and super cheap! Don’t tell everyone though as it’s the best kept secret in photography along with with the Nikon f301 and f601 (beautiful cameras - super cheap)
The aesthetic of this camera is just 👌. In grey they look very modern, like they came out yesterday, not 30+ years ago. Too bad where I live they are as expensive as other pentax cameras 😅
Pentax K1000, MX & LX + SMC lenses.
I would like to know what the opinion is on using lens adapters to get other system lenses to fit on a K-mount camera
I'm currently rocking ME super & P3N. Only thing I dont like about the P3 series that you cant set the iso yourself. Other than that 5/5.
Yep -- unobtrusive grey/plastic look -- I can't remember what the slight upgrade of the P30t/P3n is, but essentially the same camera. Hey -- so what *IS* the fix for the ME (and similar) mirror lock-up/wind issue (other than whacking the camera on a semi-rigid surface to fix it for a while until eventually the whacking completely breaks the camera!!!)? Thanks!!!
Better off with a Ricoh KR10 I would have thought. Had mine since 1982 (ish) and it still works fine even after regular use. I've got the (compatible) Pentax 50mm f1.4 lens on now which makes it even better. Looks nicer than that P3 as well.... ;)
Have you ever worked on / owned any Cosinas? I got a CT-7 a few years back as a shelf piece owing to a game I love and as far as I can tell it’s quite similar to a Pentax ME Super, with the same K mount and even more buttons. Nifty wee camera and despite its rather plasticky top it’s quite tactile to use.
got one for free :)
