I've had a GMC since 2016 and have done a few things to make it more reliable and usable. I haven't done anything to the exterior and I especially like your grill, headlights, and Firebird side vents. I have ideas of my own but may try to replicate your grill. I'm a bit late to the party here... but it's been noted that the valve cover baffle over the PCV valve is quite a bit longer on the motorhome OEM valve cover. Using regular car version valve covers will allow the PCV valve to pull more oil into the intake. Likely due to the increased blow-by in the motorhome application. Let us know if you notice increased oil consumption.

    ....that's a good strategy -- ripping out all the old, used and outdated sub-assemblies, like the A/C system, the ductwork and wiring. That's smart. Wiring looms, no matter how protected or hidden they are, will eventually deteriorate because of age. 🤔 Hope you make more videos, and keep updating your progress. I'd like to see more about the dashboard improvements you made. thanks.

  • @MrZZeroG
    @MrZZeroG 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice job. I hope you block this mold well as it would be a great resource for the GMC community if you allowed. I need the rear inside cap for our Birchaven, but our Palm Beach front/rear is in fantastic shape. A couple of notes. I had a 60k sq ft composites mfg faculty for about a decade. We used wax additives for external gel coat applications (repairs) to help push the cure due to the low mil applications and little mass to push the thermoset. It won’t have much impact on your glass layers as you should put down more mass than that to wet the glass. Yes, oxygen does impede the cure, but not nearly as much impact as the exotherm. Agreed you don’t want wax additive in the gel coat or other layers. PVA was probably a good choice first layer here to prevent styrene migration and a potential stick of the new plug. Might want to use wood strips in the future in leu of polystyrene foam with tape. The bridging won’t be a big deal and I’ve cut into a lot of glass when someone didn’t use urethane foams and it is often a mess inside. I hope you can show some close ups of how much texture you picked up on the final part. Nice job! Maybe next summer for us.

    • @MrZZeroG

      @@getoutgadabout3423 if you haven’t done the second layer yet (or even if you have) consider flexing some 1/2 plywood strips in there or use weights/tight bond to glue some 1/4 strips to match the curve across those large flat surfaces. You can just lay them in with glue still wet (don’t glue the wood to glass first step) and clamp/weight down so the layers take the surface shape. Then do one final layer over these with some chop mat or woven to hold them in place. If you double the section thickness, the stiffness goes up by 8. It will keep it nice and level. If you wanted a more permanent plug you could do an egg crate sort of insert with plywood 2-3” and it would be rock stable. For one or two off, this will do great.

    Getting rid of a working HEI ??? Why??

    • @getoutgadabout3423
      @getoutgadabout3423 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That ignition system works directly with the fuel injection unit allowing it to adjust the timing and tune the motor for the best results. Addition of multi spark also makes the engine run smoother and gives it a more complete burn

    Why get rid of the old foam?

    • @getoutgadabout3423
      @getoutgadabout3423 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I removed the old foam for flammability reasons, and the fact I wanted to use Rigid foam board instead of spray foam so the coach could still twist naturally without the foam trying to make the structure more rigid with the old film gone I’m able to adhere the foam board directly to the outer walls and making everything even without fighting with the old form underneath it.
