Me and my 1976 GMC Motorhome Renovation

  • I'm trying to motivate myself with a series of videos to complete my retirement dream of traveling the country. I started this project about 3 years ago and have recently been feeling the bug again. I figured I would video the progress to push myself a bit harder to see some progress and make this motorhome my own.

Slow and steady finishes the race. Looks great! We have a '76 Palm Beach. There are a lot of moving parts to maintain.

....that's a good strategy -- ripping out all the old, used and outdated sub-assemblies, like the A/C system, the ductwork and wiring. That's smart.
Wiring looms, no matter how protected or hidden they are, will eventually deteriorate because of age. 🤔
Hope you make more videos, and keep updating your progress. I'd like to see more about the dashboard improvements you made. thanks.

This coach was close to running into the shorted battery connection to the rear battery. The insulation was worn through just waiting to short against the frame. Removing all the wiring makes me feel more safe for sure.

Just started watching your channel and subscribed. Please keep the videos coming, you should also post on FaceBook Classic GMC Motorhomes page. Looking forward to how you upgrade this coach along.

I have watched all your videos on this GMC coach renovation so far. Your design/renovations ideas are great! I can't wait to see how this bad boy, (or should I say "Tubby"), progresses along. It will certainly be one of a kind motorhome when you are done. Good Luck and thanks for all your hard work on the videos! Cheers from Alaska!

We have a 1975 GMC Eleganza 2 that we spent the year of 2019 updating and 'restomoding', making it our own. We will be RV-ing fulltime when we retire also! We've been enjoying your self motivation technique, I started a blog for the same reason, have to keep going because people are watching!

Of all the GMC motorhome restoration videos yours is the more technically detailed. I will follow your progress. I'm sure you know about GMC Co-op in Florida so pay attention to them as well. You already dealt with Manny or did you ? When it comes to making that driveline reliable he's your man. Could have snagged one of these puppies all done up a few years ago and missed the opportunity. Now I live in the world of regret. Cheers and soldier on.

Yes I still have it but haven’t done much lately except start it to keep the fluids moving. I hope to motivate myself to get back into it. The GTO is almost done so that would help. Thanks for watching.

I think you are doing a great job so far! New wiring - very smart move. Would love to hear the engine. Did you have to change the intake manifold for the Holly Fuel injection? looks to be repainted, just wondering if the Holly FI has clearance or did you install an new aluminum intake with blocked cross over. I'm really curious as to your layout for your bathroom now that they old one piece shower/toilet has been pulled. Did you do the disc brake system yourself? Heat protection around the fuel lines is a must to keep fuel temp cool. I've seen thermal heat paint that may be a good idea on the bottom and sides of the fuel tank to reflect heat from road and exhaust pipe when sitting at idle (I think it is ceramic heat break paint). Definitely wrap the metal fuel lines from the tank forward with thermal heat resistant wrap or piping - have to keep that fuel temp down. How many miles on the engine? Did you have to replace the timing chain? Any work on the final drive or transmission? I look forward to seeing more videos!

no I maintained the stock intake. I filled the crossover with aluminum and ground down some clearance for the throttle lever. being its a spreadbore snipper it fit right on the intake with no adapter. ill show it running soon.

@@getoutgadabout3423 Awesome work! Very impressive to tackle filling the intake crossover, which is definitely the best way to block the exhaust ports.

@@groovy1937 Thank you. I was a bit frightened filling the crossover. it was the first time dealing with that much molten metal. fun learning experience though.

Inspiring. That thing is going to be wicked. You have some serious skills. I wouldn't know where to begin with the heater/AC upgrade. I need it. Hey speaking of... I just removed my original AC compressor and the cast iron mounting stuff over my valve cover because a guy in FL that seems to know a lot about these units told me to "Get rid of it!" I was excited to have easy access to the valve covers and fuel pump. This other GMC old timer/mentor I have here in OR scolded me and said I need that compressor to keep the balance because the alternator and steering would put too much force on one side. It kinda makes sense. What are your thoughts on that? I guess you have some kind of compressor now. How on earth did you know what components you needed for that AC upgrade. Would love to know more about that project. Thanks for the time you put into sharing this. Helps.

Honestly I wouldn't worry about removing 30 lbs off one side of a650 lb engine. I'm sure the motormounts will be just fine. I put in a snaden compressor that was matched with the vintage air system. I do plan on making a new bracket for the rear of the compressor that wont obstruct the valve cover. others have said its not needed but I will feel better. I'm sure I will probably go into more detail when I start working on the dashboard. thanks for watching, stay well.

No, I started making videos right after that process. I cringe watching this first video lol.

Where did you install the fuel tank for the diesel heater?

    • @getoutgadabout3423
      @getoutgadabout3423  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The tank hasn’t been permanently mounted yet. The plan is for it to go basically where are you see it. There will be a boat style fuel fill on the outside and a vent. I’ll show more of that when I start working on the interior can’t seem to get anything done right now
